This place is so nice. The tables aren’t too close together so having a convo is not impossible. The Chilaquiles were so good. Perfectly spiced! My friend had the French toast and she it was the best she has ever had! Highly recommend!

I'm leaving this review as a warning to other diners. On February 1, 2026, my $930 GANNI coat was stolen while I was seated at the back bar. A staff member directed me to hang it on an exposed wall hook near the bathroom corridor -- I was not informed of more secure hooks located under the bar. The restaurant had CCTV footage of the theft and the suspect, which was reviewed by management and shared with me directly. Despite this, when NYPD inquired, they were told no footage existed. I have contacted Freeman's numerous times over several weeks via email, phone, and formal written notice to its owners. I have received no response whatsoever.I am now pursuing this through small claims court. For a restaurant that charges $100-$150 per person, I find it shocking that they cannot secure their own building, instruct customers to use an exposed communal coat rack, and allow random individuals to walk in off the street and rob their guests. A paying customer who followed staff instructions should not have to absorb a $1,000 loss with zero acknowledgment or response from management/ownership. Enclosed is a pic of guy robbing me while I am sitting at their back bar! Do not bring anything of value here. I absolutely love this spot. The nicest staff, such a cool aesthetic, great music, many different rooms all of which are different. I would highlight whoever is the lady at the door working at 3pm this Friday. She was so kind and it makes me want to come back.

Been here for brunch and dinner. Both have been really good. The restaurant is beautiful and I love that it’s located down an alley so that it creates a heightened experience. The food is good but a little bit on the pricy end, but it definitely works as a place for times when you want the occasion to feel more special.

The alley way to get to the restaurant might seem kind of sketch but once you’re inside, it’s a whole different story. The vibe is warm and cozy, I love all the different knocks and crannies. My favorite spot is by the back bar where you can order food too. Recently, I got the Half Amish Chicken and it was perfection. This has become my go to spot to bring guests when they’re visiting for something that is local, memorable, not over the top.

A couple of months ago I stopped by here with a longtime friend from my youth just to check it and the alley out. Even though we were not going to eat, we were warmly welcomed and shown the restaurant by Alyssa. After that experience we decided that this would be the next stop in our every month or so lunch Yesterday we returned for lunch and the experience was equally impressive. We were greeted and seated by friendly Willa and served by Myles who knew to do the little things that make a good dining experiences into a great one. More on that later! We ordered a burger and a chicken bacon club sandwich. Because we had told Myles we couldn't make up our minds and were going to split the entrees, she (without our having to ask) had the kitchen cut both sandwiches in half before serving them. The burger was full size and flavorful (perhaps cooked a bit more than what I had hoped medium rare would be but still excellent) and the chicken club sandwich delicious. The club sandwich came with salad and the burger with fries. I am not usually overly enthusiastic about fries, but these were amzaing - fresh, hot and flavorful! Thank you Freemans for an outstanding culinary experience! *I apologize if I did not spell the names of those to whom I gave shout outs! :-)

Honestly, I don't understand how the food in this place can be so terrible. It's a Caesar salad!!! How can you screw it up like that? I took one bite and immediately sent it back. As it turns out, that wasn't the worst option. The artichoke dip was even worse. The only thing that saved the situation was the mac and cheese.

Just wow. I went here with my friends and we tried mainly their appetizers: the mac and cheese, artichoke dip with bread, and apple french toast. They took these simply sounding dishes and completely elevated it. The artichoke dip was something else as it was savory and cheesy. I could lick that dish’s clean. The apple french toast had a bourbon maple syrup and my god it was just mind blowing. This place is on the pricier side but worth every single penny.

ABSOLUTE GEM The interior is very pretty and welcoming. It can be over whelming to walk into a PACKED restaurant, but you’ll have the best time!! The Mac and Cheese - TO DIE FOR Meatballs and Burrata - DELISH. The sauce is really good!!! Salt and Vinegar Fingerling Potatoes - less vinegary than hoped, but still really crispy and salty! Broccolini - TENDER, a little too much soy, but still very delightful THE PORKCHOP - STUNNING. The apple slaw brought a rich, bright tang. The pickled red cabbage brought strong earthiness. The porkchop was smooth, tender, and full of flavor — melts in your mouth. DESSERT: Sticky toffee pudding? Inject it INTO MY VEINS. The ice cream — seasonal and sourced locally. Solid, no complaints The no flourless chocolate cake with cream was fine — not sure i’d get it again, however it pairs well with the ice cream (we opted for vanilla) Service exceptional. No notes. Can’t wait to come back!!

Cool restaurant down an alley with lots of graffiti. They have nice cocktails. Even made me an Irish Coffee.

Went here for brunch and was quite disappointed. We informed the staff member who took us to a table that I have reduced mobility but they still made us sit upstairs which was difficult, slow and painful for me. My French toast was big and soggy, not very flavourful and my "breakfast links" were cold when brought to our table. The chicken and waffles were tastier. I told a (different) staff member that my food wasn't good and they completely ignored me. We're decent people so we paid full price, around $80, tipped well and left (slowly and painfully back down the stairs)

Freemans has been the gold standard for 'cool NYC' dining since 2004. Walking down the dimly lit, narrow Freeman Alley off Rivington Street makes you feel like you’ve discovered a secret colonial tavern. The interior is pure hunting lodge aesthetic: rustic wood, antlers everywhere, and a warm, candlelit glow that makes it the perfect refuge for a cold winter night. • Finding it: Don’t look for a street number. Look for the colorful, street-art-filled Freeman Alley between Bowery and Chrystie. Walk all the way to the end to find the iconic blue door. • The Wait Strategy: This place is a brunch and dinner magnet. They do take reservations now, but if you're a walk-in, put your name down and head to their upstairs bar, Banzabar, or grab a cocktail at the bar near the entrance. • The Mandatory Order: You cannot leave without ordering the Hot Artichoke Dip. It’s arguably the most famous appetizer in the neighborhood. For dinner, the Whole Brook Trout and the Heritage Pork Chop are the standout rustic staples. • Best Time to Visit: Weekend brunch is a scene, but for the best 'vibe,' come for a late-week dinner around 8:30 PM when the energy is peaking.

I wavered between a 4 and a 5 but decided on the higher rating due to overall experience. Absolutely beautiful restaurant. Down a graffiti filled alley, multiple rooms and two bars. Charming at the highest level. You felt like you were in a few hundred year old home. We ended up in an almost private room at the back of the restaurant because we were a larger group and it was perfect. We started with devils on horseback and artichoke dip. Both excellent. The dip was not overly cheesy or greasy but had great flavor. The bread was nothing special but the dip was great. The devils on horseback were cooked well. Dark rich flavor. The bacon wasn’t greasy and it had a perfect amount of cheese. We shared both the kale caesar and grain salad and would order both again. Both were not overly dressed and had great flavor. We added bacon to the caesar and it was a generous portion and crispy. The grain salad had a little tang to it and was very refreshing. Also shared the Nashville hot chicken. Again generous portion. Chicken was cooked really well, very moist on the inside and crunchy and sticky on the outside. I don’t think it had much of a kick heat wise but was very tasty. The waffle was a little disappointing. It was barely warm when served and didn’t have much flavor, definitely did not taste any cheddar. I didn’t taste the English breakfast or pancakes but both looked delicious and the people who ordered them enjoyed them. We also tried the ginger shots and they were great. The restaurant is definitely not cheap and we had a couple of things that were not perfect but overall the experience of the actual restaurant and the food is worth a visit or two or three. Will definitely return to try more food options .

Our waiter John H. created a pleasant atmosphere from the get go. “Welcome to the upstairs.” His soft tone, attentive demeanor, and knowledge of the menus set the stage for a comfortable low key dining experience. The rustic decor, chill vibe, delicious cuisine, tasty drinks, and burst of color to the alley which leads to Freemans adds expression and an old time NYC feel. We will be back. Thank you Freemans and John H. Especially for the unexpected birthday treat.

Always a great time at this place. Not only is it very unique, literally down a graffiti lined alley - very cool in and of itself, it is so very much more. This time we say at their back bar and had drinks and apps. I highly recommend the Devils on Horseback. Great drinks, great food, great staff, great place.

My boyfriend and I stopped here to grab a quick breakfast and the food was unbelievably amazing! I got the sourdough pancakes and they were some of the best pancakes I’ve ever had. He got a burger and it was amazing and so fresh! We also got lattes and the taste was so rich, they also decorated the top with hearts. Our bartender was amazing and was very attentive and gave us quick service, even though we were to-go orders he still attended to us as if we were eating at the restaurant. The artwork in the alley as you walk up to the restaraunt is amazing as well! We definitely plan to sit down and eat when we have more time!

One of my favorite restaurants I have ever been to. I went for my 30th birthday dinner and the vibes were immaculate. It was so cozy and homey; it felt like you were visiting a European pub or hunting lodge. It’s a hidden gem tucked away in an urban art alley. I had the roasted duck and it was superb. I loved the interior design and seating of the place; it was so unique and eclectic and brilliant. Highly recommend.

When it comes to wedding receptions, generally those with allergies are left in a lynch. People with confused expressions and gestures of good luck. But not here! This place has servers that actually care. With each course that came out, they made sure we got food that wasn't going to torture our insides. The amazing news doesn't stop there though. While you might not like this place if you're with Peta (or at least the decor) you'll find that everything inside is very homey. You'll forget you're in a restaurant. The adventure begins the moment you turn down the alley and walk among the various works of art that surround you. Come with an empty stomach and a sense of wonder.

Super friendly service and great food. And even the coffee was amazing. It is a place tucked in freeman Alley, that gives the vibe of an old English house. Old decor (including stuffed animals on the walls which some of plus found disturbing). The Norwegian Benedict was great.

Food was delicious; the sourdough pancakes with the bourbon maple syrup is an absolute must. The French toast is also very delicous; very thick on the challah bread. Price is what you would expect for a NYC brunch.

really awesome space hidden in the end of an active and free nyc museum, just absolutely beautiful decor inside that’s very warm and inviting. the food is really good and the staff are super attentive. great space for parties with plenty of space and options to enjoy a night with friends

I love the interior layout of the restaurant! Great vibes. The food is decent, but it is at the pricy end for brunch. I had the English Breakfast. There was nothing special about it just normal breakfast that you might make yourself honestly, but it is a great place to meet up with your friends and family for a brunch once in a while just for the environment and atmosphere. I definitely won’t recommend ordering coffee tho.

I absolutely loved the atmosphere at this place which feels like a rustic hunting lodge. The food leans new American and everything I had was pretty tasty. The star for me went to the grilled octopus appetizer with Manila clams that was perfectly cooked and so flavorful. Next up was the pork chop which is a massive cut. Perhaps just a tad overdone for me but still very good and the collard greens that came with it were amazing. If there’s one course I could have skipped it was dessert. I had the sticky toffee pudding and while it was decent, it wasn’t amazing. Overall it was a really good meal though and I look forward to trying again for their brunch sometime.

Stepping into Freemans is stepping into colonial New York. You are instantly transported to a time of rugged simple elegance. The dark paneled walls and plank floors with early American oils hangs by throughout showing off their idyllic beauty from the glass paned windows and candlelit crevices. The food was absolutely exceptional! Watermelon Feta Salad was so refreshing and the Sticky Toffee Pudding is not to be passed up. We even received two glasses of bubbly to commemorate our birthday celebration. Main courses and f Cavatelli and Steak Frites hit the mark and of course the side of Macaroni and cheese was winning combination. The Cocktails Orpheus Ascending by and Mayan Harvest were outstanding! The service from Brittany was superb. Dinner was well paced and her anticipatory attention was appreciated and noticed but unobtrusive and meld with the harmony of the rhythm of the courses served. I certainly can’t wait to be back for this transportive experience. All that was missing was Alexander Hamilton sauntering in. Bravo!

Interesting place to have food. The place has a wonderful vibrant atmosphere. The inside and environment is unique. The place will cram you in and will seat guests in the most awkward placement. The food needed a little help. My full breakfast was only half good. Eggs and mushrooms were fantastic. The coffee tasted burnt. The service was too chill. They’re very sweet but slow to service and bringing food randomly. Completely spaced out too much. I would suggest this place for the energy and environment and ambience not necessarily the food. The artichoke dip was amazing!
