What clients say about W New York – Union Square in New York (NY)

$800/night and they charge you for internet. I love the location, I have great memories from the bar / restaurant downstairs (when it was Olives), but just a lot of chiseling here. Disappointing. The service has also fallen off unfortunately.

This hotel burned me. Literally. I spilled coffee from the second floor cafe trying to get into the elevator, and ended up with second degree burns on my finger. I brought it to the attention of management, but no apology or offer of any sort of compensation was offered. This is an elegant and expensive hotel, but their reaction to my injury left me considering courses of action.

I rented an Airbnb in NJ and the ceiling collapsed. At the last minute, the W was able to accommodate my family of five with adjoining rooms. Everyone here has been outstanding and we couldn’t be happier.

Great Hotel, Eduardo went out of his way to assist with a challenge we had! Minus 1 star for the most uncomfortable toilet ever
Feb 15, 2026 -
Very cool old building. Was there back during the late Jan 2022 blizzard. Flights cancelled, management very accommodating to lengthen our stay.
Jan 24, 2026 -
Great hotel, fantastic breakfast included for Marriott members. I really dislike “destination fees” it’s very off putting but if you can get over a fake fee, it’s a nice hotel

We stayed here during a very cold spell, and walking into the warm lobby was a relief—especially for the kids, who were able to sit and relax comfortably. Seating was limited, but thankfully there was just enough for our family. The check-in process was smooth and timely. We were told all rooms were upgrades, but only one of ours actually was. The room I stayed in felt quite small, with little space for luggage, but we accepted it. Complimentary water was provided, though it came in box cartons, which I personally didn’t enjoy as the taste of the carton came through. Breakfast at the restaurant was excellent. My eggs were cooked exactly how I like them, paired with healthy and tasty sourdough bread. The black tea was consistently a highlight. The TV channel selection was great, with English Premier League football matches available—something I really enjoyed during downtime. The location is convenient for downtown and Union Square, but if you’re planning to visit Central Park or the Upper East/West Side, it’s quite a long walk—especially in the cold. Overall, this is a good hotel with friendly service, a great breakfast, and enjoyable amenities. Despite a few minor drawbacks, I would return here.

Had a 5 day stay over Christmas, a last minute getaway. I hadn't staid in the hotel in a number of years so was looking forward to seeing the renovation. Arrival was seamless, fabulous and welcoming staff. Was upgraded to a beautiful suite a treat since upgrades are a rarity these days in domestic hotels, but the W is Marriott owned not a franchise so I am sure that has something to do with it. The renovation in the lobby and rooms was fantastic. They did a nice job keeping the historical elements of the hotel while updating the fee. A real tribute to the updated branding that W is doing. The suite was very well decorated and quite large by NYC standards. The lobby and other public areas were similarly well done. The gym is very well equipped, more like a club gym than a hotel. Really appreciated the effort here. Normally am annoyed at the "destination fee", but they make it worth the effort. The Food and Beverage Credit is super easy to use and the new Seahorse restaurant is quintessential NYC seafood and really good. You also get tickets to the Mercer Museum which I was dubious about but would recommend. And the Hydrochairs seemed gimmicky when I read about them, but turn out to be quite nice and you get 10 mins a day free with the destination fee. All the staff were wonderful. About the only recommendation is for the property to look into sealing the windows a bit better. Quite drafty in the rooms and NY was cold that week. Not an uncommon issue with older hotels in NYC.

I smelt bad chemical (cleaner? Maybe to cover up smoking?) and so asked right away for another room. Was given no problems and changed to another room. They provided early check in and late check out. And held our luggage free of charge. The renovations are very stylish, kind of like Great Gatsby vibes. Our room was very spacious, standard king room; love the black and white floor tile for pictures. Would stay again. Rooftop still unopened but everything else was. Oct 21 2025

My new favorite hotel in NYC. - Very centrally located - large, new rooms - well equipped gym, with peloton bikes On the downside, - the staff were not the nicest (maybe just NYC?) - the restaurant on the ground floor was very loud and very busy (NYC in holiday season?) - the bar on the rooftop was closed

I’ve stayed at the W Hotel in Union Square twice now, and each visit has been genuinely fantastic. Even though it’s labeled as a 4-star hotel, the experience easily feels comparable to a 5-star stay in many ways. The rooms are comfortable, spacious, luxurious, and always clean. The staff is consistently friendly and welcoming, especially the doormen, who go out of their way to make you feel taken care of. Overall, both of my stays here have been excellent, and I would absolutely return. Highly recommend!

We had a delightful experience at The W during our anniversary weekend. From the moment we arrived, the hotel staff went above and beyond to make our stay memorable. We were thrilled to receive a room upgrade, thanks to our gold membership, which was a fantastic surprise. Additionally, the champagne delivered to our room was a lovely touch that made our celebration even more special. We also enjoyed the bar at the hotel, which had a great atmosphere and excellent service. As part of the resort fee, we received a F&B credit, which was a nice. Overall, our experience at The W was exceptional, and we couldn't have asked for a better way to celebrate our anniversary.

Steven saved the day — and the stay! Overall, we had an uneven service experience at both the front desk and the restaurant. The receptionist at check-in was absolutely amazing, warm, and welcoming. However, during a later visit to the front desk, the service from another receptionist felt noticeably more stern. The room was beautifully decorated, and the view from the 20th floor was wonderful, although the single small window limited how much we could enjoy it. The gym is spacious and well equipped, and I especially enjoyed trying the Peloton room. Breakfast service on the first morning was disappointing. We waited a long time to be seated, our waiter reconfirmed our order twice yet still got it wrong, and our tea never arrived despite requesting it twice. Fortunately, our experience improved dramatically the following day thanks to Steven, who provided exceptional service and truly elevated our stay. I was also pleasantly surprised by the hydromassage — I was initially sceptical, but I ended up loving it. Overall, despite a few inconsistencies, this turned out to be a great stay.

This was our 3rd stay at this hotel, the first since the renovations. The lobby is gorgeous! Wow! We had an amazing room with spectacular views of the city. The room was very spacious and clean. We were surprised with champagne for our anniversary! We had a drink in the Living Room lounge, the room was a little too bright for night time, but was a beautiful space! We only had breakfast in the hotel restaurant, next time would love to have dinner there! We wanted to come back for the holidays because we loved it so much, but the prices have really jumped since the renovations! Maybe next year! What a perfect location for the Union Square holiday market! We will return!

Can’t speak highly enough about my experience at this hotel! I travel to NYC often for work and this hotel left an impression. Newly renovated, the rooms were a great size for NYC. All of the staff were truly above and beyond friendly and made the quick visit even better. I’ll definitely be staying here again.
Nov 14, 2025 -
Public announcement: NOT PET FRIENDLY W hotel has the audacity to call itself a pet friendly hotel while charging 250?! That’s like penalty for smoking in the room. So are pets welcomed or penalized? A lifestyle hotel cannot brand itself like one and does the opposite. The Standard hotel welcomes pets and prepared the room with dog bed and treats, while charging NOTHING! That’s a real pet friendly hotel. I don’t care how much cleaning products you are using to clean the room. I’m sure you are not doing 250 dollar worth of cleaning after a dog stays in the room. This is absurd amount to charge for bring a pet. This is a penalty for traveling with pet. This is disgusting. If you have a pet and love traveling with them, avoid this hotel until they waved the fee and learn how to be a real lifestyle hotel.

I love, love, love, the colors and decor of the room and lobby. It's a prime location in the middle of everything (shopping, restaurants, etc). Most of the staff were friendly. I wish I could say that for everyone at the front desk. Also, if you're a light sleeper, you may want to have earplugs. You can hear alot of street noise, and I was high up. I was also pleasantly surprised to see small bottles of wine/alcohol in the room, which is convenient if you prefer not to visit a local liquor store (where it would be cheaper).
Nov 01, 2025 -
The new W is a great place for a work trip The rooms are nice with extremely comfortable beds Windows a little too small for my taste Make sure to get an high floor being on Union Square is definitely noisy
Oct 31, 2025 -
I really enjoyed my stay at the W Hotel Union Square. I stayed for two nights as both a guest and a vendor at a conference held at the hotel. The staff was incredibly helpful and friendly, making my stay easy and enjoyable. The custodial staff was top-notch, and I’ll plan to stay again when I need to be near Union Square.
Oct 30, 2025 -
This was an exceptional hotel for New York, and beyond. The restaurant, Seahorse, had just opened up a week before my visit, and it was already very popular, for good reason: the food was wonderful and the service was superb. The oysters were incredibly fresh and some of best I’ve had in years, the lobster cavatelli were amazing, and the drinks were perfect (ask for the Seahorse Manhattan)!
Oct 20, 2025 -
600-700 a night is pretty steep for a place that can't keep hot water running. Others complaining at checkout so I know it's not just a me thing Plus the decor is garish and ugly
Oct 16, 2025 -
There was this chap at the front desk who was just really warm and nice and made my wife and I feel so welcome, so kudos to him. Unfortunately I did not get his name, but he's bald and does not wear spectacles. Nicely renovated rooms too, reasonably spacious.
Oct 14, 2025 -
Best ever! I’m sure I can speak for every local New Yorker that the reopening of the restaurant has been long awaited and the 2nd floor bar is the new spot. The drinks, the staff, the music was all a vibe (and the white Negroni). Erin made sure my friends and I were taken care of and made us feel welcomed from the moment we walked in.

? The W Union Square is located in the historic Germania Life Insurance Company Building, a 21-story Beaux-Arts landmark from 1911. Originally designed as the Germania headquarters, the building was converted into a W Hotel in 1998. It is known for its distinctive four-story mansard roof. ★★★★★

Context: Business traveler, extremely Marriott-loyal (Ambassador Elite), pretty much only stays at Ws these days||I've stayed at this hotel 3 times in the last year, all for about a week each. I had never considered this property previously because I heard it was dark and in desperate need of a renovation. Well, W heard us loud and clear and they gave us that! The place is now gorgeous - the rooms, common areas, gym (one of the biggest and best). Much has been written on this, I don't need to reiterate it. ||RATING|I score hotels based on how they deliver vs. expectation. I have low expectations somewhere like a Renaissance or a Courtyard. I have high expectations for anything in the luxury horizontal: W, Edition, St Regis, etc. ||Here is where this W goes from 5 to 4: So, Marriott decided this would be the flagship W for not just North America, but GLOBALLY. This means this needs to be the most amazing W - not just from a physical standpoint - but also from a service standpoint. I cannot in good conscience give this 5 stars, when I have had better service at almost every other W I have stayed at in the last two years (London, SF, Punta Mita, Algarve, Barcelona.. maybe not Seattle, that one is kinda meh). On top of that, there is no buzz or energy at all - you walk into the lobby and it feels like a Renaissance. For the global flagship, I expected...excitement? Nice scents? Or at least a doorman? (they always seem to be missing??) ||DECEMBER: (2.5/5)|Had to fight for my life for a barely-there upgrade despite what looked like availability on the app (biggest peeve given immense loyalty), and there was no breakfast benefit because there was no restaurant, unless you count mediocre pastries and coffee downstairs. Service was also really unimpressive.||MAY: (3/5)|Someone had coordinated an upgrade on my behalf which was then given to someone else before I checked in, I was given a room with concrete covering the window and then a super noisy room on a low floor, again had really unimpressive service (people talking poorly about their other coworkers, service fragmented across Welcome Desk and Insider, toiletries missing in rooms, no one responding to my email for several days despite reaching out first). On the bright side, they partnered with Devocion for free coffee and a pastry for the Elite breakfast benefit, so that feedback was taken into account, and I loved this perk. ||AUGUST (this month): (4/5)|I spoke with both the GM (Christina) and Director of Ops (Alex). They helped me with my corporate rate and gave me the best upgrade on the highest floor - it was stunning and perfect and greatly appreciated. There were some new faces (Darina, Jessica) working who were so much friendlier and more professional than who I had encountered prior, who even found butterfly bandages for a broken nail I had (THANK YOU), and were very on top of it. And the restaurant was open for guests! But... the restaurant still had kinks to work out. Calling down to pre-order breakfast was a total disaster across reception and restaurant and I ended up being late to work, and with an incorrect order. Second day only a little better. Menu for elite breakfast is also really unimpressive compared to the other Ws listed above. ||BOTTOM LINE|If you do not care about service, you will love this place because it's gorgeous. But my other Ambassador friends/coworkers who have stayed here feel the same and prefer The Edition a couple blocks away. I remain optimistic given how each stay has been better than the last and my love for the W. ||Today, this feels like a luxury boutique instead of a full-service W - and definitely not a flagship one at that. Even little things, like really dirty mirrors in the elevator, or missing doormen at all hours when myself or others are struggling with bags, make the experience feel incomplete. I also think whoever was in charge of the reno didn't do any favors putting the bar (which I don't think is open) on another floor - the lobby Living Room bar normally adds life. ||This is a W! Maybe we don't need club music anymore, but a heartbeat would be nice.

This hotel has a beautiful lobby and is in a great location near shops, stores, and the subway. Rooms were gorgeous and comfortable as well but what stood out the most about this stay was the excellent service and help from the front desk staff, Sebastian. It's great staff that keeps me loyal to the Marriott chain of hotels. Thank you!

Amazing hotel in a great location and all at a reasonable cost! I travel to NYC frequently for work, and since the recent renovations, this place has taken massive strides in quickly becoming one of my favorite places to stay. Service is always impeccable from the minute you walk up to the entryway, and after my most recent stay, I have to give a special shoutout to Vincent who went above and beyond for me. The rooms are spacious (by NYC standards), up-to-date in design and impeccably clean. Can't recommend it enough!

From the moment I arrived at the W Hotel in Union Square, I felt genuinely cared for — especially thanks to Nelson and Natalie, who went above and beyond to do this . After switching from another hotel where I wasn’t comfortable, I was hoping for a smoother experience — and they delivered so much more than that. Nelson and Natalie ensured that my check-in was seamless, welcoming, and stress-free. Their attention to detail, warmth, and professionalism instantly put me at ease. They took the time to make sure every aspect of my stay was perfect, and it truly made all the difference. The room is stylish, clean, and super comfortable — exactly what I needed. But more than anything, it was the exceptional service from the team, especially Nelson and Natalie, that turned my visit into something special. Highly recommend staying here if you want a hotel that truly prioritizes guest experience. I can’t thank the staff enough!

From the moment I walked into the W Hotel at Union Square, I knew I was in for a top-tier experience. The sleek, modern design of the rooms was both stylish and comfortable—perfectly blending New York energy with a calm, relaxing vibe. Everything was spotless, well-appointed, and thoughtfully laid out for both work and relaxation. The service was exceptional. Every staff member I encountered was friendly, professional, and genuinely eager to make my stay perfect. Whether it was the concierge helping with last-minute reservations or housekeeping ensuring everything was flawless, the level of attention was consistently impressive. One of the standout features for me was the room service. The menu was surprisingly extensive, and everything I ordered—from breakfast to late-night bites—was absolutely delicious and delivered quickly. The quality of the food was easily restaurant-level, and it made staying in just as enjoyable as going out. Highly recommend the W Union Square for anyone looking for a modern, comfortable, and luxurious stay in the heart of NYC. I’ll definitely be back!

Best hotel I have probably ever stayed at! Super clean! Beautiful rooms, great location! EXCELLENT customer service! I had a vertigo episode & they were so accommodating with bring my order to my room, bringing me water, and offering to fill up my water bottle. I was there for work & will be back to stay every time I come for work! Super dope hotel!
