Look, this is as solid of a thrift store as any. Prices are mostly reasonable, the inventory changes often. Been stopping by for years, I walk out with something at least 50% of the time which is the correct amount imo.

AMAZING PRICES!!! The prices here are unbelievable for the quality of clothing you find ? Customer service at the register by a kind man was superb, he was really helpful and informational (I wish I got his name to shout him out, he was dripped out with a cap on) I highly recommend anyone in the area to check this store out!

I went on a day where it’s listed that the white clothes are 50% off so I chose something white and tried it on before buying it obviously. The tags on the clothing I wanted to try was 7.99,but since the tags are quite flimsy it dropped off. And I was trying to tell the cashier that I saw it for 7.99 and he said it’s 6.99 and I should be happy with it because it’s cheaper. And I can’t get the 50% off because of no tags. But it’s paper just stapled to clothes so it’s pretty likely to fall off. I mean the clothes are a good price but the guys attitude and tone made it really unpleasant :/

Pretty nice in my opinion. T shirts, dresses, bags, shoes. Not a lot of space for the aisles. You have to dig for good stuff and the prices are nice. Some items are more expensive though.

Nice staff and good prices, but hard to find good thrifts if you’re on a shopping trip

Great variety of stuff for cool prices. Better than Goodwill. Love it ❤️❤️❤️

TOXIC. CUSTOMER. SERVICE. Many great finds at fair prices I have found over the 7 years I have been frequenting this location. But the TOXIC behavior comming from the tall, elderly, African American, male cashier with glasses who works the register on most days is why I will not be returning. He ruined my shopping experience at this store awhile back when he started yelling at me, accusing me of shoplifting and demanded I open up my gym bag I had slung over my shoulder. Yes, I was comming to this store from the gym and since there is NO BAG CHECK at this place, customers must carry their bags with them while shopping . No apology was ever given when I opened my bag and proved only my items were in the bag. Another ruined shopping experience yesterday, when I opted out of three items at checkout when he refused to honor the sign upon entering “50% OFF EVERYTHING IN THE STORE TODAY in honor of MLK day ” Then accused me of repeatedly bringing items to checkout and then changing my mind about purchasing them.

Terrible Customer Service Experience I’ve been to this store multiple times before and never had an issue, but my recent visit was incredibly disappointing. When I walked in at 6:02 PM with a small snack, I was immediately yelled at by an employee instead of being greeted. He rudely told me, “You can’t eat in the store,” without knowing anything about my medical condition. What made it worse is that there were no visible signs posted stating such a policy, and when I asked him to show me the sign, he refused and just repeated himself. I’ve visited many stores across the city, including plant stores, and have never encountered such hostility or a policy like this. To make matters even more frustrating, the tall gentleman with glasses wasn’t even actively working—he seemed more focused on scolding me than assisting customers. I will never return to this store again due to how poorly I was treated by this employee. If you care about respectful customer service, avoid this place.

A lot a lot of garments, really good price! It’s nice to merge the second hand business and the donation side. I felt like Macklemore in Thrift shop so I loved it :)) There were also a lot of good things for the home, such as ceramics and decoration.

So this store was supposed to close at 7pm. The two workers however were yelling around at 6:25 how they are going to close now. I asked them why they close now if the official closing time is 7pm. He said 7 is when they already wanna go home and have it cleaned up. He and the girl continued to yell around and then he said how annoyed he was loudly. Then at some point we were bullied out by this girl who yelled at us at 6:40pm „we are only waiting for you guys to leave, we can’t close just because of you.“ There were other customers in the store though so it was simply not true. When we left more customers came in and they didn’t say anything. Super weird experience.

That white girl with the accent is always so rude to me for no reason every time I go there, she rushes me to the register when it’s my turn then when I go to pay with Apple Pay she doesn’t tell me anything so i think I’m able to tap my phone , she gets so aggressive telling me to wait cause the machine is still loading, and I’ll just be standing there waiting till I can pay and she’s still telling me the machine is still loading I have to wait, sis I heard you the first two times.. relax. then doesn’t even bag my stuff, just gives me the bag to do it, girly pop you can relax it’s really not that serious i don’t understand why you act like that

The store on 8th avenue is a filthy smelly mess. Tons of broken stuff scattered around books tossed on shelves stained torn clothing and a rude man at the register. The store on east 23rd Street is in better condition and more organized with friendly staff. I generally stay away from the 8th avenue location.

I stopped by this location to browse in hopes of finding something interesting for my apartment and possible gifts. The store is not small or big and there wasn't much to pick from...the first shelf was somewhat bare but I did find nesting photo boxes, which I love. Lots of glassware and very little bric-a-braks. Still I did find a handful of items and the prices were decent...most I paid for an item was less than $10. Will be returning in the future.

It's always a delight to venture for treasure! You never know what you will find at great prices, much better than the goodwill!
May 27, 2023 -
This thrift store has a great range of items with actual thrift store prices. Although the winter coats also go for $20 or so. All other items are reasonably priced whether or not they are designers and there are a lot of designer items. A majority of the clothes are older or out of style but you will find a few gems here and there. Totally recommend it as a low cost, variety-full store.

New Management are not personable. I've been shopping in the Store long before they've arrived which is probably since the start of the new year(2021). Some of the item are being priced outrageously. These items are being donated and shouldn't be sold for exorbitant prices. Update 06/03/2022 They're not as bad as far as prices goes You can find some good deals in there The people who I was talking about are no longer working there so the places much more pleasant to shop at. Update 11/28/2022 The Management has improved drastically. I'm very satisfied as they take heed to customer desires. I love this thrift store. The Manager Mimi is very professional. I'm going to be honest it's a tough crowd in this neighborhood. She knows how to deal with everyone's personality.

I stopped by today and a woman customer was trying to explain something to a male employee. The employee interrupted her loudly and told her she wasn’t listening. When she tried to explain herself again, he became louder and said, “STOP. Stop talking. You need to listen to me.” She sounded reasonable and calm the entire time but either way, NO ONE should be talked down at in that manner, especially by an employee.

Loved my visit here! Got a few cute things for amazing prices especially for a Manhattan thrift store. The goodwill nearby has insane prices so finding this was awesome! The staff is also super friendly here.

This is one of the good thrifts in NYC: cookware, books, mens clothing all pretty good to great. Very nice staff and the store is clean enough. However I can't make heads or tails out of how the store is organized. But def worth a trip. These folks put up with a lot and deserve props. For all you old timers, I miss former manager Angie and her crew. Angie didn't take no s#&t from anybody, you could eat lunch off the floor, and somehow the merchandise was just better than any other store. This isn't to disrespect the current store cuz they are better than most, but 2008-2012 approximately was something else. Angie if you out there, a big hug to you. And Claire, and Kevin, and anyone else I forgot . Damn, I'm really an old guy now, reminiscing. Wow.

I like this place mainly for the book selections they have. I typically discover book titles here that I don't see in many other thrift stores that still carry books in their inventory. And on recent visits, I saw plenty of interesting brick brac items that many previous owners must have gotten tired and decided to replace. Display items, many other things for your work, house, or projects. Very good prices. You just need to know what you're looking for, or even get ideas from all the items found in this location.

Wow. Impressive. Cleanest thrift store I have ever been in. Well organized. Staff very helpful. Appreciated things are in working order and good condition. Bonus that they were having a sale and everything half off. Might have splurged on a thing or two.
Mar 18, 2022 -
This is one of my favorite places to shop. They have lots of great finds at low prices. You can really make out good and save a bundle!! Sales staff is very friendly.
Aug 29, 2020 -
HATED my experience there. The African American Lady stared at me the whole time i was there. I was holding a hat that I was planning to get. She may have thought that I'd steal it. It was early in the morning and it seemed like she'd already had a bad day. The hat didn't have a price tag so I asked her for a price she said 5 dollars (which I thought it a bit steep). I was heading to put it back but she asks me to give it to her (probably thinking so that I don't steal it). For her to think that there'd be a theif early in the morning right when the store opens, AT A THRIFT STORE. Not coming back here!

After visiting a lot of Goodwill thrift shops around the city, I wanted to check out a Salvation Army store too. The Goodwill shops are infinitely better than Salvation Army. This location was worn down and the inventory was lacking. Goodwill sorts men's and women's clothes by size and color which is super helpful, and their stores are clean and well-kept. This location is a messy free-for-all and I wouldn't not recommend for thrifting.

Since moving to Penn South in 1996, I’ve bought many, MANY shirts here... also a floor lamp ($19) when I moved to a new apartment. The selection is almost always really interesting and, of course, really inexpensive! You KNOW that what you pay will go to supporting the wellbeing of a fellow human being - the whole experience of shopping here is well-worth it.
Sep 21, 2019 -
This is a bargain hunters dream. I love the salvation army, they are far more affordable then their counterpart Goodwill. The lower level is now closed and everything is on the main floor. you can find anything from handbags, wallets, jewelry, clothing, shoes, furniture, and book a all in one location. This is truly a hidden gem in Chelsea. Why spend big bucks elsewhere when you can buy second hand and give an old piece some new life at an affordable and economical pricepoint.

Salvation Army Family Thrift Stores are dirty, cluttered, and somewhat disgusting places - especially if you like your thrift clean, classy, and tidy. While the clothes are sorted with some semblance of order, the collectibles and housewares tend to be scattered around and in pretty decrepit shape. The shoes are abysmal for the most part - so beat up and gross, I would be embarrassed to donate them to charity, much less resell them! The Chicago-area stores are bursting with so much merchandise, stuff is literally piled up and falling off shelves on the ground. Now that I have been to this paltry store, I truly appreciate the Chicago-area stores. There was barely any merchandise here – where the heck do rich New Yorkers donate their discarded goods – certainly not here! The pickings here could not even be called slim. In this thrift store desert, however, I found a sleeveless top for a mere 49 cents. I was annoyed to discover it must be a national SA policy to staple price tags right on clothes – once again, this inane practice left a hole in the top, albeit a small one. The clerk was very rude – he rang up the top at $3.99 when a clear sign stated all sleeveless tops, tank tops, and shorts were 49 cents. Mind you, they had only two pairs of ladies shorts left in the entire store! When I corrected him, he bit my head off and said that this was not a tank top. I pointed to the sign and he reluctantly changed the price. Hey, buddy, I didn’t make this up – the price was stated clearly on several signs. No need to be such a jerk!

Employees are very nasty and rude. I usually don't care about nasty employess as long as I find good stuff but their employees are so bad that i left the items on cashier without paying for two times. I used to go there everyday but I don't go anymore. Cashier girl is always on phone with her headphones. While i was paying I thought she was talking to me but she was on phone. This happaned several times. Manager increases prices -or not sell at all- according to your skin color and gender. Previous manager lady was very nice who works at East 23rd St. store now.

I love this store and I've found many costumes and props for my children's theater. I also donate to them and have never had any problem. Some people (like Jennifer Hansen) don't understand the business model. The Salvation Army is not going to give your table to someone in need. They sell things and use the proceeds to run their programs. They only want items that are easily SELLABLE. So they will not accept furniture that has flaws.
