What clients say about Mountain House Times Square in New York (NY)
-
The restaurant offers good Chinese food with an elevated feel that appeals to different demographics. The dumplings in chillies oil is a classic dish, they are somewhere between wontons and siu mai. I believe the filling is shrimps due to its signature crunch bite feel. The chillies oil is spicy, salty and savory. The grilled beef ribs are my favorite because its fun to eat. Staff puts on a show and torches the beef at the table. The beef comes with a bbq like sauce and fluffy buns. Mapo tofu comes in a heavy stone bowl. The dish has a good ratio mix of silken tofu and ground beef. The flavor is balanced, however, it doesn't have that signature szechuan numbing feel. The szechuan double cooked pork is juicy, tender with slight crispy edges. The dish is good; but despite the name, signature szechuan spiciness is no where to be found. House steamed crab is huge; can be served for 2 people. Presentation is impressive with the dungeon crab lays on a bed of sticky rice with bonito flakes sprinkled on top. The crab is delicious but is also a lot a work to extract, it's exacerbated by the steam method that causes the meat to stick to the shell. Sticky rice has nice spongy, sticky texture and is well seasoned, very umami, savory, sweet. Drinks are good. I like the different non-traditional specialty cocktails they offer. The restaurant is very popular and is usually booked for dinner. It's best to go for lunch or get reservation ahead of time. The space may seem small at first glance but the restaurant actually has 2 floors. The place is nicely decorated with interesting elements, like roof tiles, giant ink brushes, etc. Staffs are very helpful, polite and friendly.

Wow! Everything was amazingly flavorful fresh & savory. Spice level is great & they’re non alcoholic options were lovely. Texture was great, and the variety was very good. Great authentic restaurant, good service & fairly priced.

I’ve heard so many great things about this place, and I finally got the chance to try it — it definitely lived up to the hype! The food was absolutely delicious, full of authentic flavors, and beautifully presented. The overall experience was wonderful, from the warm atmosphere to the friendly service. I’ll definitely be coming back again. Highly recommend!

It is hands down one of the best Chinese restaurants in New York. The food is incredibly authentic, especially the Sichuan dishes — bold, flavorful, perfectly balanced with that signature mala spice. You can truly taste the quality and attention to detail in every dish. I also want to especially mention Steven. He is one of the most responsible and dedicated people I’ve ever met. His professionalism and care make the entire dining experience even more exceptional. It’s rare to find someone so genuinely committed. Highly recommend to anyone looking for truly authentic Chinese cuisine in NYC!

This restaurant has been on my radar, and walked by after a show. Soon as you walk in great atmosphere, relaxing music. Most important, tasty flavorful food and warm and friendly service. The menu is heavy on spice and very extensive. You had me on steamed whole fish! I will definitely return and have something more exotic next time!

Food and drink here feels refreshing and tasty. Service was great, very attentiv. We got the pork belly with cucumber and some oil sauce, egg drop soup, and lobster mapo tofu. My favorite was the egg drop soup as it tasted great and their use of veggies to keep things refreshing is great. Lobster was sweet and great, but the tofu was a bit at the bland side. Would come again! Their lychee mints are yummy

We had our first meal here during the New York snowstorm this week, and it was such a heartwarming experience. The weather was freezing cold, but the complimentary hot tea was absolutely delicious and warmed us right up. Every single dish we ordered was amazing. Before we left, Steven kindly gave us an umbrella, which truly touched us. During Chinese New Year, we really felt the warmth and hospitality, it was so moving. We came back again today for dinner. The restaurant was very busy when we arrived, but the front desk staff did their absolute best to arrange a table for us. After we were seated, Steven happened to be the one helping us again. This time, we ordered entirely based on his recommendations and every dish was outstanding. This is honestly the best Chinese food and the best service we’ve experienced in North America. Highly, highly recommend! Thank you, Steven!
Feb 27, 2026 -
The food was very tasty. We ordered the fish soup, eggplant, mapo tofu, a chicken dish, and a green am sauteed vegetable. This was a good amount of food for 4 people. The interior of the restaurant is also cute.

Well deserved 5 stars! 好吃服务又好! Servers are super friendly. They got birthday songs. Servers went about and beyond getting manager to approve free desserts for birthday. I don’t remember their names, or I will mention them here. A young gentleman and elder gentleman, and a nice lady.

Really love this place! The Sichuan dishes were sooo good, everything was super flavorful. Service was amazing, everyone was really friendly and attentive. Really love the drinks, honestly didn’t step on a single bad one. Every cocktail was on my point. Big shoutout to Steven, his cocktails were soooo good, like dangerously drinkable lol. Def coming back!

Man—what can I say? After a disturbing experience at another Japanese restaurant while we were waiting for our table at Mountain House, this place completely changed the night. It is hands down the best Chinese restaurant I’ve ever been to—and not just because of the food, which is excellent. The real surprise was Steven, the master bartender. The cocktails he creates are beyond words—simply exceptional. Honestly, the best cocktails I’ve ever had. Just try one, and you’ll understand exactly what I mean.

I really enjoyed the swing pork belly, the fish fillet with crispy rice, and the La-zi chicken. The pickled chicken feet was tasty, but I wish it had been a bit spicier. The dessert was also excellent. All the staff members were friendly and provided very high-quality service.

Amazing spot with quality food and drinks, true to the cuisine. The prices are very fair especially for this quality of szechuan food (perfect blend of salt, and mala spice). The atmosphere is cozy and clean, perfect for dates. The service is impeccable, and there was no rushing for how packed the place was. Easy to reserve through Resy otherwise when we came at 805 PM Wednesday, the wait list was around 45 minutes.

Originally opened as Chai with imperial Beijing cuisine, refined, delicate in taste and plating. Later rebranded to another Szechuan Mountain House with similar menu as the other two locations, though without some of the more exotic dishes and toned down spice levels for the neighborhood. The decore remained the same resembling courtyard gardens where you gather for family meals. Started with pickles veggies, chili wonton & mapo tofu. Fried rice, lotus root & steam whole fish were my favorite. Still have the er guo tou baiju is still on the menu, remember one time the table cleared their stoxk ordering like a dozen bottles 😅. Still a top spot in the area, but reservation is recommended.

If you live SPICY this is your place! Pork texture that we got wasn't my personal favorite but flavor was great! Dessert was good but the fried rice we got was SPICY.... too spicy for us. But flavor was great. Also important to not that most of these places when they say pepper they mean JALAPEÑO pepper! Overall good place but most dishes are just too spicy. I would say their spice level starts at a 4 to 5 out of 10. The rice too me was an 8!

I was here with family and we absolutely loved the overall experience. 1st of all, I would like to shout out kudos to our server, Shirley. She was very attentive, personal and compassionate. She took out time to explain different dishes and which authenticity those align to. The service was fast. The decor is amazing and relaxing. The restroom is spot clean. Adjacent table was celebrating a birthday and it was amazing to witness how the staff put their efforts to make it special for them - it shows how obsessed everyone is for their customers. I had also forgot my aligners and on table and they carefully boxed and labelled them and handed over to me following day. I have recommended this place to my friends, colleagues and family. A few went already and came back with amazing experiences!

Mountain House is a NYC staple when it comes to Sichuan food. With two locations in Manhattan, this spot in Times Square has stunning Chinese interior and is a reliable spot when it comes to authentic Sichuan cuisine. Service here is excellent and fairly quick. When I came, I got their swinging pork belly, wontons in chicken soup, mapo tofu, la zi chicken, and drunken jelly (for dessert). I absolutely loved their dumplings and their la zi chicken. Everything comes in a good portion and great value for the price. Loved ending the meal with their refreshing jelly, and I would definitely come back.

Amazing authentic Chinese restaurant the service here is exceptional. What even more exceptional is the food. I ordered the stir fried noodles with crispy tofu, the spicy fish and egg fried rice. All of it was outstanding. Shout out to Shirley. She explained the dishes very well and guided us before ordering. Will visit again.

Loved this place. It was so hard to choose what to order, but I settled on their Green Pepper Mao Xue Wang (毛血旺) which was perfect for warming the body in this below-zero weather. The atmosphere was casual but delightful. I loved the traditional wooden interior and soft lighting. A great place to come with friends, family, or co-workers. Excellent menu for lovers of Szechuan and spicy cooking, and for offal afficionados! This place is kinda perfect for couples who like spicy organ meats (you know who you are). Staff were helpful and respectful. They stopped me from ordering way too much food (I'll just have to come back soon to try out more of the menu...)
Dec 10, 2025 -
Very spicy! I liked everything, especially the green beans and dumplings in chili oil. Waiter was great and gave us a 1-5 scale of spiciness for every dish. So close to the theaters for a show. Large portions and peaceful atmosphere, good for a family dinner.

The customer service is amazing!!! Decor is beautiful and the staff are really accommodating! The jasmine pudding is sooo good. Major shoutout to Steven and Maggie for taking care of us the night of our friend’s birthday! It felt so special! They also kindly took multiple group pics for us :) Def recommend you to celebrate birthdays here! Tip: book a reservation ahead of time; wait times can go up to an hour!

This is a chain Chinese restaurant that focuses on spicy and numb dishes from northern China. The decorations and vibes of this place is very authentic and yet contemporary. The dishes are tasty and good. Overall, we have tried many of their restaurants and have not been disappointed. Definitely worth a try.

First time (first day) in New York (from UK) and honestly didn’t expect to find Chinese food this good! Everything was spot on — the dishes, the little pickles, even the green tea — all so tasty. Prices are super fair and the staff were just amazing. Lei was super friendly and helped us pick what to order, really thoughtful and sweet😊. Such a great experience overall — made my first day in NYC feel extra special!

I lived in NYC for six years, and Szechuan Mountain House has always been one of the best Chinese restaurants in the city! I visited their new Times Square location during my recent trip, and it’s just as amazing as the original spot in East Village. I ordered the Stone Pot Green Pepper Fish — the fish was so tender and flavorful, it literally melted in my mouth like tofu. Their Szechuan Pickles are always the best — I even brought some to-go and carried them all the way back home to California! The service is exceptional — special thanks to Lei and Steven for being so friendly and attentive. This place really made me feel like I was back home in NYC with so many great memories. Also, it’s very kid-friendly! There are several non-spicy dishes that are perfect for little ones. Highly recommend this spot for anyone who loves authentic Szechuan food and great hospitality!

The most authentic Sichuan restaurant in New York, no doubt. It’s super popular, so you usually need to make a reservation far in advance, but if you come right when they open, you might get a walk-in seat. The pickles before the meal are very appetizing (the chili oil is amazing!). We wanted to buy the chili oil separately but couldn’t, though they do let you refill it during the meal. The jasmine tea is also very fragrant. We ordered swing pork belly, lazi chicken, and steamed crab — all signature dishes, and none of them disappointed. Lastly, thanks to Lei for the great and attentive service!

I ordered Steamed Fish with Chives and Spicy Bullfrog. The fish was very fresh and tender, covered with a thick layer of chopped chives and light soy sauce. Simple but really fragrant and flavorful. The bullfrog was rich, oily, and full of dried chilies and Sichuan peppercorns. The frog meat was soft and juicy, with that classic numbing and spicy kick! Love, love, deeply love their jasmine tea and white cabbage dish! Amazing!

This is easily one of the best Chinese restaurants in Manhattan. Meal starts with a bowl of picked cabbage that's spicy and tart. The dishes here can pack some heat which is great. The pork belly with cucumber is one of the most unique dishes I've had. Great dumplings in chili and luscious fried rice. Also loved the La Zi chicken m prices are reasonable for decent portions. Also a really cute atmosphere but the banquete was a bit far from the table.

Service The service here is truly outstanding. Even though outside drinks are not allowed, the staff went out of their way to make us comfortable. They provided tea and complimentary appetizers, and even placed our bottled water in the refrigerator so that it remained chilled and was returned to us cold when we left. When our phone battery ran out, they kindly offered a charger without hesitation. They also thoughtfully suggested the appropriate spice level to suit our taste. Steven, in particular, was exceptionally attentive and considerate. When I felt the food was too spicy, he immediately brought me coconut milk to ease the heat. He was very sweet, polite, and friendly throughout the meal, which made the entire dining experience even more enjoyable. Food The food itself was excellent and full of authentic flavor. • Swing Pork Belly (晾衣白肉): Very fresh, with no unpleasant odor. The thin slices of pork belly paired perfectly with cucumber, creating a refreshing and light taste that was satisfying without being greasy. • Pepper Lover (小米辣爱上小公鸡): A bold and spicy dish that delivered both heat and incredible flavor. Despite its strong spice level, it was well-balanced and truly delicious — definitely a highlight of the meal.

We got a the swing pork belly, pepper lover, Fish fillet, tofu & tomato in soup, long bean with eggplant, and salted egg yolk corns. This was a lot of food for a party of two, as our waiter warned us, but we were glad to have some leftovers. Everything was delicious, but our favs were the fish soup followed by the salted egg yolk corns. The service was immaculate and the decor was enchanting. All around a high quality restaurant and dining experience.

Had such a great meal here! Every dish was super flavorful. The spice level was just right and everything came out hot and fresh. Highly recommend the stir-fried chicken and the spicy broth dishes, so comforting and satisfying. Special shoutout to Steven for being so attentive and friendly! He made great recommendations and really added to the overall experience. Will definitely come back again!
