What clients say about Morton Williams Supermarkets in New York (NY)
-
I purchased one item from Morton Williams earlier today to eat as a dessert after my dinner. When I opened my mini chocolate cream pie, I noticed it was fuzzy. Initially I thought it was ice from the fridge, but soon realized it was actually mold on my food. Had I not taken the time to examine my food, I would have had a spoon full of mold. I never shop at Morton Williams anymore because it is typically expensive, but decided to treat myself today. Biggest mistake, as I wasted both my time and money. Worst part is, I’m not even sure how to get my money back…

I eat lunch here from the buffet Monday through Friday and today they had paella. When I tell you its been a while since I eaten some really good paella and thats from the restaurants.. The chef that made it is Juan and he nailed it... Not even some of the Spanish restaurants make it as good as he did.. Morton Williams you guys have an talented chef, that deserves a raise....

Morton Williams on 278 Park Ave South is quite awful. I have frequented it for years now and the past two years, I am treated as the "other". As in, I am uncomfortably, offensively FOLLOWED AROUND THE STORE BY SECURITY. Security targets me EVERY visit and will hover exactly where I am. MEANWHILE, other customers can shop in peace. Last night, I had ENOUGH. The guard on shift almost immediately began following. I went way over to the far side of the store to the DELI area. He hovered behind me like a shadow. I was in that section viewing sandwiches for around 5 mins in part because I wanted to see if he would move elsewhere. Guess who was behind me for 5 straight minutes. Their guard was 'racial profiling' me and behaving as though I can't possibly afford to shop there. This infuriated me. I don't go into places and steal. I don't have time OR the desire to go to Rikers over MW products. I spoke to the cashier briefly about this and she empathetically apologized. I requested to speak to a manager and he behaved as if he couldn't be bothered. Not only that, he was being rude/condescending because I was upset and complaining over the situation. I HAVE EVERY RIGHT TO BE UPSET AND I AM NOT GOING TO STIFLE MYSELF FOR ANYONE. He attempted to get rid of me quickly by telling me, "Well you're welcome to leave the store." Then, a passive gaslighting apology of, "I'm sorry you FEEL that way." Then, "He's just doing his job." Oh...IS HE NOW???🤨 So his job is to shadow one of the only Black people in the store? Black people can work there but not shop there? He should be patrolling AROUND the store. What kind of security ONLY hangs around ONE person? While other people are steadily filling their reusable totes with unpaid goods. When I go to pay, security is once AGAIN hovering where they can practically read my PIN as I enter it for payment. I had to say something about this ANOTHER time I was there because by that time, that guard had stood practically right beside me as if I was going to run right off without paying. I called MW TODAY to complain, and they are nasty as hell over there. A woman answered nicely and connected me with the "General Manager." I asked if she was the GM as I had requested, and she refused to answer my question. Then I asked for her name and she hung up the phone. NICE. I called back and was abruptly hung up on. Since no one there wants to listen or care, I will talk about it here freely and uninterrupted. DO NOT SPEND YOUR HARD EARNED MONEY AT THIS OVER-PRICED BIASED STORE. A few different times, I have purchased items that were spoiled and molded. Expired or improperly stored. The store isn't that clean, it's dusty and the prices are outrageous! DON'T DO IT!!! The interesting thing is, these people think I'm going to steal from their store, MEANWHILE, I shop at Whole Foods DAILY. There is one really amazing cashier at Morton Williams. I would see her on my late night runs for snacks during the Pandemic and beyond. She has AMAZING energy, efficient, and delightful in a place that's dusty and feels dreary. She never treated me like a criminal, delinquent, or like I was up to something nefarious. She treated me with respect. I appreciate her for being a decent person and being light in a negative space. THANKYOU. Outside of this..... MW will NEVER see another penny from me. NYC is full of over priced expensive stores. There is NO WAY I'm going to give $$ to a store that behaves as if I am UNWELCOME. Permanently lost a customer.

Horrible place. Go in there to try to shop for groceries The prices are 40% higher than they are at Target or anywhere else and then when you're trying to leave the store because you don't want to pay their outrageous prices they want to stop you like you're trying to steal something when they're the thieves. Manager start trying to grab my backpack. I'm a white guy in New York City dress nice clean cut go in there to spend my money but don't want to get ripped off and this is how they treat you. They need to be sued for price gouging.

I come here very often for my lunch breaks during work, but I’m going to unfortunately have to stop. The service and the team members are usually good, everyone is polite here, but it’s hard to ignore the flies in the bread boxes and all over the food. It’s kind if gross knowing that I probably ate a sandwich that had a bug on it. I thought maybe it was a rare occurrence, but it seems to be getting worse. Today I was getting ready to get some bread for the deli person to make a sandwich for me, but as soon as I opened the door to get a hero roll, a bunch of flies swarmed out. Obviously I ended up leaving, but as I’m leaving I noticed flies all over the open food too. Disgusting stuff. This has got to be some sort of health violation.

Review for Raphael at Morton Williams: I just had to take a moment to recognize Raphael at Morton Williams. His patience, attention to detail, and deep knowledge of every item in the store are absolutely outstanding. It’s rare to find someone who is not only incredibly helpful but also knows the store inside and out. Honestly, if Raphael isn’t promoted to store manager soon, it would be a huge mistake — the company would be missing out on one of their best assets!

Today we are faced with blatant rudeness on the part of the cashier who apparently does not like her work! So much that we demand that the management pay attention to today’s shift that worked at 4 p.m. if they do not like their work, fire it boldly, otherwise they spoil your reputation with their behavior! Ask us for any information and we will provide me with everything. We can improve the service in your stores.

From the couple of times I’ve been there, i have been followed and profiled — the security guards would constantly check up on me and act as if they were looking at stock. Don’t support a business that will profile you due to your race and appearance..(would wear a backpack and a puffer jacket coming from school), the cashiers are nice but when I can’t shop in peace without constantly thinking about how such an establishment would think I’d steal..yeah i’m good.

Great products, but any items on sale does not reflect at register. You must take a picture and/or notify cashier so they can adjust the price.

Enjoy the cleanliness and courteous service of this fine supermarket. It's stocked with brands you love and fair prices. Skip the hassle and frustration of down market grocery stores.

Worst grocery store I’ve ever been to. Been going periodically for 3 yrs due to location to see if they can figure it out, but they just can’t. Anything perishable is FOUL. Meat is always on the brink of spoiling. Produce is usually already spoiled. Will continue to go to further away grocers due to this place sucking so incredibly badly.

A bit expensive Indian groceries, but they have varieties in all of them. Decent and clean place, staff are friendly and helpful

Very nasty attitude cashier named Sandra, had a problem, voiding a transaction after I had to switch an item out. I calmly asked her to void it, Her exact words were “are you kidding me”, in a very nasty tone. IT’S YOUR JOB! Serving customers is your job! She went on to say she would call the cops, and that my job as an Uber eats driver wasn’t a real job. I was shopping for a customer, and she refused to give me her name, or the name of a manager. I never had any volatile interactions here and she fabricated I did. She spoke negatively about me with customers on the line. Being annoyed at basic thing like voiding a transaction? What? I couldn’t get in contact with a supervisor or the name of any staff member. They weren’t wearing name tags. I purchased something to get her name. She threatened to call the cops. The staff is not at all professional and quite frankly instigating. Protecting each other from being held accountable. Absolutely horrendous service from a evidently miserable cashier. I wish I could give 0 stars.

I've just shopped in this supermarket today & it was nice & clean, & VERY WELL ORGANIZED! It kind of looked like the store was a mini-market compared to the one I've went to was on 2nd avenue east 21,, 22 or 23 st. I forget. 😔🤔 I've came across & discovered Morton Williams Supermarket back in October. This Morton supermarket was quite bigger & of course very organized. The first time I've shopped there they had some New flavors of flavored bottles of water called hint. Plus I also bought some kind of orange 🍊 juice that came in a tall narrowed shape bottles. The taste wasn't what I expected to be, but surprisingly I've craved for the second bottle! 😲😝😋 Anyway, the store was CROWDED by standing in the long line, twice when I went back to buy some more of that New flavors of hint water. 💧💦 And last but not least, the cashiers were Nice too. 👍🏾😉😃❤️

It’s the worst personel and workers ever. The supermarket is good but they have to hire professional staff. They’re so mean and bad, other ladies are always shouting to the costumers. How come? If they have a personal l problem don’t bring to your work place and be mean to anyone. We don’t deserved to be shouted and treat like an animal. Fired those mean cashiers. They don’t deserve to work in your beautiful supermarket.

The worse cashier experience. I was in a line waiting enough for the previous customer to be finished. And when it was my turn, the cashier told me she needed to replace her receipt paper. And I noticed the next cashier didn’t have lines, so I asked if I could do it with her. And then she dramatically yelled at me that I can just stay, and it’s just a paper and stuff. So I said I can wait, but I had a train to catch. I only asked her if I could pay at the next cashier. And she went so dramatic, passing my groceries to the next cashier, saying, “you do whatever you want,” and kept grumbling about me until her next customer. I don’t understand what button she got pushed but I felt attacked and insulted for no reason. The only reason I can think of is me being Asian. She was polite and friendly to other customers but me. It was so so terrible to experience that almost traumatic. I’m never never going back to this store. The cashier was a black woman with long hair.

DO NOT GO HERE ! The management is poor. There was a whole error of placement pointed out to them and instead of acknowledging the mistake and honoring that they ignored the problem and punished me for pointing it out to them. Mangament was cold, unhelpful, and unfriendly. Staff as rude and defensive, as though they often stick. Pass on this place, its old buffet, and its poor staff and mangament

The prepackaged food is normally expired and I've gotten sick a handful of times eating there, the managers didnt seem to thrilled to hear me out and didnt even seem apologetic, NEVER BUY PREPACKAGED FOOD HERE, if you do check expiration dates before you eat it. Cashiers are way better then the managers. 👎🏼👎🏼

Great local supermarket with very fresh produce and a wide selection of packages and canned goods, as well as consumption-ready mini food court. There are impressive selections of authentic British and German products available as well!

We Shop here all the time. It's a very convenient and affordable--and we enjoy the walk across town together, sometimes as a family, to do the daily and/or weekly shopping. It is a very hospitable place and we are happy to have to it in the neighborhood. There are several supermarkets nearby, and we are always likely to mosey ourselves over to this one.

About the Best supermarket on the Upper East Side. A little pricey but worth it for anyone living in the neighborhood. They also have a good buffet, Chinese food, Indian Food and lots of variety. Fishmonger and Butcher small but good quality for the basics.

Oh. My. God. My wife carries home their take-home meals on the subway to the far end of Queens. Affordable, yes. But the food! Steak, brisket, chicken Parmesan…The list goes on and on. And the side dishes: potatoes, vegetable medleys, pasta… Fantastic! MW, thank you! But when are you moving to Flushing ?

Decent grocery store, has most of the things you need at a reasonable price (for Manhattan). There are some significant drawbacks to this store (see below) but they still get 3 stars as I have a solid customer experience 9 out of 10 times here (I go here 1-2 times a week). PROS: Prices aren't too bad. I often come here for meat/vegetables and it's pretty fairly priced. They also have a nice selection of beers that are reasonably priced. CONS: This store is always out of stock of certain things I need. Sometimes they don't have boneless chicken thighs. They were also out of ground pork today. Very bad customer experience when I can't get the food I need. Also, service is mediocre. Cashiers always seem unhappy and the workers are unhelpful when something is out of stock.

There are a bunch of wine stores in this location - all essentially offering what (for the most part) is a commodity product. Small stores who think selling a bottle or two of overpriced boutique wine to uneducated consumers is a viable model, are heading for the business graveyard along with Yellow cabs. Differentiation based on offering a sensibly broad range of labels, good pricing and offering genuine service is the only way to survive. I think this store is heading in the right direction. Ask for Vince.

This is an upmarketish, very small (look at the size of those trolleys) corner supermarket. You wouldn’t want to use it for routine shopping as it would drive you nuts getting around the tiny aisles. Not much room to navigate the store and the deli is up stairs so you can’t take your trolley up there to shop. Navigating the exit seemed difficult for one lady on a walker who couldn’t navigate the ramp without help. Fruit and vegetables looked and smelled great, selection was pretty varied.

I had horrible food poisoning from a chicken at this location. I had to go to the doctor after a couple of days of feeling horribly. He said that normally food poisoning would leave the body after a few days, but he actually had to put me on Cipro to get me better. My suggestion is to not purchase their prepared chickens. Obviously they aren't be cooked, prepared, or handled correctly. Save yourself a lot of pain!

Open 24/7... A plus. Generally higher prices than a place like Trader Joe's, but much better than a 7-11. Not very friendly checkout clerks, but pretty good selection for a smaller grocery store.
Nov 19, 2016 -
Be careful with the prices you see on the shelves (especially promotions), they rarely match what they have in the system. The difference is normally between 15 and 30 cents, enough for you to chose a product over another but not enough for you to bother going back and complain. It happens regularly and it's very annoying.
