Secondhand shopping is my favorite thing to do; I categorically do not wear factory-new clothes, outside of intimates. The West Village Housing Works is, IMO, the best secondhand store in New York City. I have gotten so many treasures from here over the years, and every time I pop in, I see something that tempts me.
What I enjoy about this Housing Works is that it's curated. This is not the kind of hard labor thrift shopping, where you can find a $25 designer item after sorting through 20 stained things. The price point is higher than cavernous thrift stores packed with merchandise, because the staff and volunteers do the labor of selecting things that are stain-free and not too worn.
My favorite designer is Milly, and I almost always see something Milly any time I go in.
Most importantly, Emmy and the staff at Housing Works are lovely; they clearly really enjoy their jobs, and the vibes in the store are so nice. There have been multiple times that I've been in the store and have seen customers chatting with one another or encouraging each other to buy the fabulous thing they're trying on. It's a treat to shop in an environment where other people start conversations with you, and there's a shared love of a very good find.
Wandered in shortly after a visit to the (wonderful) Housing Works Cannabis dispensary on Broadway, over by Astor Place. The clerk/artist on duty had assembled mannequin displays of such impeccable style—and of perhaps even roughly my size—that I had to ask the artist if they would disassemble their creation, that I might fit it to my body. Lo and behold, I now own their secondhand genius for the flat price of 45 United States dollars. And I feel good about the organization and energies receiving my money too, given that it's Housing Works.
A great shop, with a good selection of clothes, books, and household items. I think it’s much better to donate and shop here than somewhere like Goodwill due to Housing Works’ mission; however, prices tend to be a bit higher here than you’d see there.
Okay, spot. I've purchased things from their before, but it feels they prefer white shoppers. I was questioned on where I got an item that was on the $10 earring rack right on the registers counter and then told it was accidentally there and actually $18. I will not be returning. Too many thrifts in NYC to worry about this one
I really like this place but since when thrift shops have become so expensive???, I used to come here often and prices were not cheap but they had good quality items so I would splurge . Lately this place has become a luxury thrift shop where prices are insane. Yes, they do have quality items the prices are ridiculous. Very disappointed considering this place used to be a place to get things that you would normally cannot afford.
I bought a Ringly smart ring here for $24. I took it home and found out it no longer has an app in the app store. I brought it back the next day and asked for an exchange for half the asking price and was told there are no refunds are exchanges. I returned the ring to them and told them i had no use for it. It’s pretty suspect behavior; parading around as a charity while simultaneously stiffing their customers for electronics that don’t work. I know that Housing Works is a charity combating Aids and homelessness, but that doesn’t give them the right to rip people off. Just saying…
Me and my fiancé visited today and saw a typewriter for only $50! As a writer my eyes lit up once I saw it! The employees were so sweet and even tested it for us! We are 20 year olds from a very sad part of queens so we only came to window shop but no one judged or followed us! I’m so happy with my visit :)!
Great finds here, and inventory is frequently updated. Size of store is the right balance between manageable/digestible yet large enough to browse through
Over 14 years duration, have bought fine shoes, a painting, a Gucci hat, a sport jacket, CD's, houseware items, gifts for a fastidious girlfriend. Mostly decent quality - often vintage - items are here. If you have unusual articles - the kind, where you'd ask yourself, 'What was I thinking when I bought this ?,' you might as well donate it here. Potential drawback is that, even on a Saturday, this particular Housing Works opens after Noon.
I had an item that I needed to return and eventhough their sales are final the manager in the store let me exchange and I ended up spending more bc I loved her massive safety pin earrings. I will be back bc this really stylish man convinced my girlfriend to buy some heels
What kind of nonprofit is this when the CEO Charles King is getting paid an annual salary of $423,730? Not a very good one since I see many homeless people on the streets of New York with no assistance and this guy who claims to be helping the homeless is racking in $423,730 a year! Also they were very rude and unhelpful to me when I had estate items to donate. Help the homeless and lower your ridiculous salary dude.
I’ve been donating stuff to Housing works for years. Over the years I’ve bought some amazing dresses. I love the vibe of this housing works. It’s very cozy and calm. The staff are all lovely. I love the wide range of things that are sold — from clothing to kitchen ware. It’s really fun to pop in and walk around when I’m in the area. Who knows what you will find next!
The best thrift store in NYC. I love Housing Works. This one is my favorite so far. The best finds. The best staff. One of my favorite neighborhoods. ? Will keep coming back here. Highly recommended.
I came here for the first time today and am in love with it!! They have a great selection of clothes and the people working there are so helpful, they even went out of their way to help me find something to go with a specific outfit! Tuesdays are student discount days. I will definitely come here again, I can’t recommend this place enough! Also, of course your money is going to help people who need it.
A delight to pop in and check out the second hand goods every once in a while! I visited another store location in the city, and between the two, this one has more diverse offering of clothes, furniture, and kitchenware. The space is also larger and has a more welcoming feel.
I love this store so much! You can nearly go in everyday and find new stuff.
The only thing that got me sad one's was that I donated a huge bag of clothes and the staff didn't even say thank you. They were just like leave it there..
I visit this place from time to time and have found good vases. In terms of clothing, I have not come across good pieces (could be just me coz I have seen other people buying plenty). Very comfortable to walk in and spend some time.
