What clients say about Irish Hunger Memorial in New York (NY)
-
What a powerful and eye-opening monument right in the middle of lower Manhattan. The Irish hunger memorial is a testament to not only the potato famine that killed so many Irish and made even millions more flee the country, but also to famine, starvation and poverty worldwide. Definitely a beautiful peaceful memorial worth checking out.

A magnificent monument with stones specially imported from Ireland and typical Irish plants and grasses. With the right camera pan, you feel like you're in the middle of Ireland. If you then pan the camera upwards, you have the entire Financial District with its gigantic skyscrapers in your sights.

My sister and I have walked to this memorial, and this memorial is dedicated in 2002 to commemorate the Great Irish Hunger and Migration of the 1840s and 1850s and to raise awareness about world hunger. Designed by artist Brian Tolle, it features a half-acre of Irish landscape, including a 19th-century cottage, flora, and stones from all 32 Irish counties. The memorial is built on a cantilevered platform overlooking the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island, representing the destination for many Irish immigrants.

Really wish there was more context for this space. The elevated green space is lovely and cool to walk in but there is no too little information contextualizing the memorial and why it is in Tribeca. The quotes wrapping the structure are awkwardly formatted, making it hard to read them and get the full impact of the message. Overall quite underwhelming and disappointing.

A moving and peaceful tribute in the heart of the city. The Irish Hunger Memorial is a beautifully designed space that quietly honors the lives lost during the Great Famine. Walking through the stone cottage and grassy path feels like stepping into rural Ireland—right in the middle of Manhattan. The quotes and history carved into the walls are powerful and emotional. It’s a reflective, peaceful spot with beautiful river views, and definitely a hidden gem worth visiting. Checkout Wanderlust Swapnil for detail vlog on YouTube

A peaceful and meaningful place with a beautiful view I brought my mom to the Irish Hunger Memorial and it was a really special experience. It’s such a peaceful spot in the middle of the city, with a stunning view of the Hudson River and the surrounding skyline. The memorial itself is beautiful and thought-provoking, it’s not just a place to walk through, but to reflect and learn. We loved how it combines history, nature and art all in one. It was a lovely moment to share with my mom and I highly recommend visiting if you’re in NYC. It’s free, open to everyone and a quiet break from the busy city.

Beautiful memorial for the Irish my grammas maiden name is Murphy, we loved the koi fish pond

Very beautiful and moving. It actually made me a little emotional. The flora from Ireland really did make it feel like I was at home. Even those little succulents on the walls that I’d forgotten. As an Armagh native, i’m a little bias but i was so excited when I found the Armagh stone. The positioning of it reminded me of standing on top of the hill behind Armagh cathedral and looking over the city (although this city has much bigger buildings ?)

A Very Beautiful Park?️ that I've Never been before! A Very Beautiful view that overlooks the Hudson River left alone, a Beautiful Pond too!???????????

An incredible piece of artwork with very moving quotes and facts relating back to the time. A well thought out monument with as much meaning today as it did 180 years ago A sad start to the day but a poignant one ?

This was my first time at this memorial. It is intriguing to me because I just learned about the plight of the Irish People at that time. It is beautifully done in stone in Irish Architecture at that time. (See Lou M review for details about this place)

This is a beautiful memorial to Ireland's Great Fame. It's a living memorial with plants and trees to make it look like a hillside in Ireland in the middle of Battery Park City. It's definitely worth the visit. Especially if you are Irish. ☘️

Tucked between the WTC site and the Hudson River, this is a an authentic Irish cottage from 19th century Carradoogan, in the parish of Attymass, County Mayo, Ireland that has been relocated stone by stone near Manhattan's Battery Park. Free, great sunset views over the Hudson.

This is definitely one of the interesting and well-thought memorials in New York. The architecture design is grabbing the attention of everyone walking there and makes you want to learn more about it. It is a great way to educate and raise awareness of the Great Irish Hunger between 1845-1852 when more than one million people starved to death. All the material used there - stones, soil, vegetation were transported from Ireland and the stones are from each Irish country. The authentic cottage which was also donated by an Irish family brings even more realistic vibe of the memorial.

The Irish Hunger Memorial is designed to raise public awareness of the events that led to the famine of 1845-52 and to encourage efforts to address current and future hunger worldwide. You see an abandoned, authentic cottage from Ireland in beautiful irish flora.

Such a beautiful little monument in the middle of Downtown Manhattan!! With views of the World Trade Center from such a green and natural park. In memory of the Irish famine of the 1800s. Lots of historical quotes and information written on the sides.

If you are a local, a tourist, on a lunch break, or a lover of history... I highly suggest visiting this unique memorial of an Irish tragedy. A human tragedy to be exact; one that destroyed the lives of millions and changed the lives of other millions. The Irish Hunger Memorial is powerful, beautifully maintained, simplistically harrowing, and yet reminds us of the cynical nature of life. I suggest for everyone to make a visit to this splendid gem !!!
Jul 23, 2023 -
Powerful memorial that highlights the struggles of Irish immigrants who left a Ireland in search of a better life in America. Built from resources taken from the west of Ireland the memorial is a perfect representation of rural Ireland and contains stones representing each of the 32 counties. The memorial also offers great views of New Jersey and World Trade Center.

I have lived in this area since 2015, but only discovered this memorial accidentally on a recent visit for a show at Tribeca Performing Arts Center. My husband and I had arrived to the area early, so we decided to just walk around and explore. Both of us being of some Irish descent, we were very interested in taking this in! I actually think I would like to return and spend more time reading all there is to read on the walls! When we were there, it was the end of March. It was hard to tell if the vegetation on the hill leading to the top of the memorial was meant to look sort of poorly managed or if it was a transitional time of the year. I would be interested to go back when things are in full bloom and see if there has been any change there. It looked like a good space to have a lovely garden, but that was not the case at the time. Being that it is an Irish hunger memorial, I thought there was a possibility that appearance was intentional.

Stones came from Ireland, such an amazing place dedicated to Ireland, beautiful view, and monuments, very peaceful place in a middle of Manhattan.
Jan 02, 2023 -
This monument reminds us of what many in Ireland consider to have been a natural catastrophe which if not engineered, was at least used by London for political reasons as London essentially sat and watched 1 million people die of hunger in the late 1840's. No help was received, no pity was given.... This is one of the great massacres of the 19th century and yet, so much silence over it. The monument gives a good image of the desolation which existed in Ireland from 1845 to 1849, the contrast with the wealthy and fancy surroundings adds to the starkness of it all.
Sep 30, 2022 -
Very nice memorial. It’s hard to believe it is in the city. As an Irish person I really felt as though it represented the Irish countryside very well and it reminded me of my home county, county Mayo on the west of Ireland. Very nice and for me well worth the visit.
Aug 16, 2022 -
I've come here many times. I often stand along the eastern base of the fence and close my eyes for a moment. Opening them you can easily be transported to a hilly heath in Ireland. Despite my surname, much of my genetic makeup is Irish, though they came over before the famine. While at least one reviewer seems to have missed the entire wall of quotes and statistics along the monument's sides, they are nonetheless there as are audio recordings of readings and poems as you enter the hallway entrance. It is a beautiful site no matter the time of year.

A quiet hidden gem a quick walk away from the World Trade Center. Beautiful place to gather one’s thoughts and walk around this small little park. Has amazing views of downtown and the Hudson River. Did not get a chance to read all about the Irish Potato famine but loved the look of this park and the act of finding the entrance (by the water) really made the visit contemplative and reflective.
Jan 02, 2022 -
The is a little hidden gem in Manhattan. A perfectly quiet memorial. Being from Ireland I’ve wanted to see this a long time. But I was astonished that the ruins aren’t the only thing from Ireland. The grass and other vegetation is. If it weren’t for the skyscrapers in the background you’d believe you were in Ireland. Magical

Having grandparents as Irish immigrants, it's nice to have some acknowledgement of the perils they went through. I do wish this memorial had information on what exactly they went through. No informational plaques or anything... But nice to see a little bit of Ireland (rocks and plants from the various regions in Ireland) in NYC.
Aug 08, 2021 -
A poignant, humble memorial to the devastation of the Irish Potato Famine and its impact on New York. The memorial sits, unremarkably when seen from the east, as a grassy, elevated park. The entrance from the west are panels of bright light with facts and quotes describing the famine. You enter and wind through a dilapidated home, emerging into a lawn of grasses and simple plants (nothing too beautiful here, it is a true-to-form replica of an Irish home during the famine), finishing at an outlook over the Hudson. Stunning. Powerful.
Jul 14, 2021 -
Really peaceful oasis down in the Battery Park City area that honors and memorializes the Irish Immigrants that made the effort to leave their homeland and settle here after the potato famine. Really makes you feel you’re actually in Ireland out in the rural rugged countryside

Very beautiful and meaningful place for us. Would’ve loved some literature for the children to read. We noticed that you could download an app that had literature with it. But we do not do that because we only have one smart phone between us all. Wanted this to be more educational for our children. This was a great place for us have a picnic and there is a park nearby also.

Beautiful and profound experience. Nature brilliantly juxtaposed against a stark urban backdrop. You still managed to get lost within that moment even in such a small space thay you forget there is a busy city literally with 200 feet of where you are.
