It was such an experience to really learn more about Teddy! I’m currently studying about him in my current history class, and getting to look at more information about Teddy was amazing. Sadly you will need to book a tour just to go upstairs. Was a bit bummed but i’m glad the entry was free! Nice little stop for anyone who’s interested in history!

There is so much information here. If you're into history or Presidents, this is a must. The tour and information is geared for all ages. My children (6, 9 and 11) found everything very informative, they had questions and enjoyed seeing the house.

Such an amazing recreation of Teddy Roosevelt’s childhood home. Our guide on the tour, Ryan was extremely knowledgeable and made for an exciting recount of the life of Teddy. He also offered extensive knowledge of things and places we might know better today and how they tied into the Roosevelts’ lives. This was a 10/10 tour and such a beautiful landmark. Thank you!!

We had a quick stop here because we had a time slot at another museum. The site is free accessible and gives an interesting overview of the life of TR. As Dutch people, we enjoyed learning more of the ancestry of Roosevelt. We will surely return on day to do a tour.

A little historic site and museum in the heart of Manhattan. They offer a few exhibits you can view at anytime as well as guided tours at dedicated times. I didn’t take the tour when I visited but would love to if I found myself back in this part of the city. Restrooms and water are available.

It's a worthwhile visit if you like history and you're in the Flatiron District in NYC. I wouldn't make a trip just to see it. Make sure you get there for a tour. The tour let's you see the rooms upstairs and the guide provides helpful stories that give the place meaning. I was lucky arriving a few minutes before the tour started and there was space available. A larger group came in later and couldn't join.
Dec 22, 2025 -
It was brief, because I got in quite a bit past 2pm and was told I needed to have registered for the 2pm guide ahead to have a proper tour around, so I could only tour around the ground floor, but overall it was a good experience.

We stumbled on this museum and wow- the volunteers were so informative. Do yourself a favor and do the tour- no charge and wonderful. Our guide was great - after the tour he received many thanks from the tour group…. And applause from everyone ….. the house is a replica however 60% of the furnishings are from the family…..

Walking around this area today and I passed by Teddy Roosevelt’s birthplace in NYC. It was open for tours but I did not have time today. Maybe next time. Not one of the fabulous midtown mansions but it is large and rather plain looking for a rich ex president’s family.

Lots of history about the early party of Teedie Roosevelt’s life. You have to tour with a guide to see the home and tours are almost hourly starting at 11am. Our guide, Rich, clearly was passionate about the subject and tried to squeeze as much into our hour together as possible. Free. Junior Ranger program onsite. Highly recommend.

This museum, for starters is not actually the original model home that Theodore Roosevelt resided at in his childhood, as it was reconstructed in 1923 by the Roosevelt Women's Association. The original home that sat here, was initially constructed as a brownstone house in 1848 to lived in by Theodore Roosevelt Sr. and his wife, Mittie Roosevelt. In 1858, Theodore Roosevelt Jr., most remembered as the United States 26th President and a former governor of New York and Vice President. By 1873, the house would become vacant due to the family moving down towards 57 Street. The house was revitalized by a coalition after being destroyed for a department store in 1920, in the form of Edith Roosevelt, Corinne Roosevelt, and Bamie Roosevelt. In 1923, this historic site was officially reconstructed, and by 1962, the Kennedy Administration signed legislation to make this a historic monument in New York City, operating as part of the National Park Service. During my visit, I was generally impressed that such a small, and rustic little home could tell so much about the life and legacy of Theodore Roosevelt. This museum specifically acts as a historic place that allows you to learn about TR and the about the childhood he had while residing in this home. The museum part was insightful and full of many artifacts in their original shape, including documents, campaign merchandise, and original items important in the life of Theodore Roosevelt. The museum also was perpetual, as it also featured major events such as the election of Theodore Roosevelt in 1898 as state governor, the childhood, his extended family, and his Progressive Party Campaign of 1912 that split his party into two. It also gave us a background of the quotes of Theodore Roosevelt, each taken from a prominent speech or letter that Roosevelt wrote in his life. The aspect of the tour really was revolutionary, our tour guide, Nicholas, or Nicky, as he does not like being called, told us much about the life of Theodore Sr. and Mittie, and the remnants of what they resided in from 1848 to 1873. It was an interesting, and funny experience that shaped the way we, as historians had felt. Overall, this is one hidden gem that you could find in Manhattan, and it is free. Definitely a must visit historic site for anybody interested in American History.

Great little museum. It was smaller than I thought it would be, but there was lots of great history here. Only went on the first floor since the tours weren't going at the exact time we were there. Still saw lots of political cartoons, Roosevelt quotes, and memorabilia. It's very fascinating. Did the junior ranger, but they were out of badges, so we had to be put on a mailing list. Probably spent 45 mins here. Time well spent.
Jun 29, 2025 -
Great place to visit if you are interested in TDR history. Definitely do the tour. Museum on first level has some amazing quotes by Roosevelt.
Jun 01, 2025 -
Great! Very informative and unique experience! The guided tour is worthwhile and will allow you to see much more than you can see on your own.
May 14, 2025 -
Cool place to learn about the life of Theodore Roosevelt. The tour Guide is very friendly and informative, I will have to go on a tour one day.
May 02, 2025 -
I love Teddy Roosevelt on how he accomplished both political and natural management. If you want to know how he drove New York Police Department into a better one and how he managed the mourning time for his daughter and wife, and also how he built NPS, this is the perfect place to learn more about his history.

I found the group (free) tour interesting, **There is not much to see if you don't align with the guided tour times.
Dec 27, 2024 -
I greatly appreciated my recent visit, and I’ll definitely need a follow-up to fully explore all the materials within the gallery alone. The free-of-charge guided tour was highly engaging, informative, and entertaining. You should definitely budget time to participate, including signing up earlier in the day. In touring the house, we all found it quite surreal to be surrounded by furniture and decorations that are original to the late 19th century, particularly the intricate work of each artifact, which demonstrates the expansive craft that went into producing it. Simply inspecting and contemplating a photo of the ornate glass panes of the dining room door (attached) still captivates me afterward. This was particularly striking when we learned that importing—and then domestically manufacturing—such glass goods was the origin of the Roosevelts’ dynastic wealth. I believe that my visit was enhanced by some familiarity with the family as gleaned from the following two sources. You, too, may appreciate the added depth, either before or after a visit: - [book] “Traitor to His Class: The Privileged Life and Radical Presidency of Franklin Delano Roosevelt” by H. W. Brands - [documentary] “Ken Burns: The Roosevelts - An Intimate History” in collaboration with PBS

The guided tour of the Theodore Roosevelt House was exceptional. The guide provided detailed explanations of the historical events connected to each room, showcasing extensive knowledge and passion for the subject. She was not only informative but also kind and approachable, making the experience even more enjoyable. The rooms were meticulously preserved, reflecting the history beautifully. The tour lasted a little over an hour, which felt like the perfect amount of time to fully appreciate the house and its stories

This site is tucked away in one of the most beautiful parts of NYC. The tour was absoluetly amazing, our guide knew so much about Teddy but also his whole family and the events leading them to NYC. Our guide was personable and funny and excited about the Roosevelt's. When I left I felt like some of that excitement had transferred over to me which is my favorite part about seeing these historical sites. I spent almost 2 hours at the house doing the tour and then looking at the small museum in the house. The tour was free. There was also a small gift shop located at the front and bathrooms inside as well. Would highly reccomend learning about a Great American man and President to your NYC itinerary.

Hidden gem. Childhood of President Theodore Roosevelt. Free entrance though you have to join a tour to see the rooms in the house. It is scheduled, so be aware of the time. There’s a little exhibit room where you can go look around anytime.

Cool place, but 3rd incarnation of the building. One ranger was friendly, the other was not. Artifacts and info was great, but only 2 tours a day offered. Would have been better if we had been offered a tour. A bit hard to find on street. You have to be really looking bc street signs are not obvious and it is a busy street with vehicles parked everywhere.

A great attraction with tons of historic artifacts during Theodore Roosevelt's life. The museum provides great insight to the enigma of Theodore Roosevelt, and fully discusses Roosevelt's legacy in America. There are some interesting facts present, such as Roosevelt never allowing himself to be photographed in his tennis uniform to preserve his manly image. The tour was decent: the recreation feels historic and is a glimpse to how upper class life was in 19th century NYC.
Jul 23, 2023 -
Mr Nick the guide gave us an enchanting glimpse to a life well lived - Teddy Roosevelt. A must visit for history buffs. It’s a well maintained brownstone house. Keep an eye out for the collectibles around the house.
Jul 07, 2023 -
Really nice free tour offered by the National Park service. The only way to get up into the house is via a tour otherwise you can pop in and look at the museum off the lobby. The museum talks moreso about Theodore Roosevelt's childhood and doesn't focus much on his adult life. A large portion of the tour talks about the evolution of the house and its demolition. With that being said this home is a replica that was built in the 1920s shortly after Theodore Roosevelt's death by his family. It is really quite the place and our tour guide was very informative. If you have mobility restrictions it is important to note that the tour consists of many stairs and I am unsure of any elevator access being available. There is however a small chair lift in front of the building that would at least allow you to visit the museum portion of the home.

They have a nice detailed history of his presidency and a great collection of political cartoons that I'm a fan of. I learned a lot well here it's definitely worth a visit

For those that enjoy US history, I can’t recommend this location enough. To visit the birthplace of such an important and iconic figure is really inspiring and a unique experience for New York. I suggest signing up for a tour which shows you various parts of the house. The staff are incredibly friendly and knowledgeable about all things Theodore Roosevelt. If you’re lucky, you can also go into the library room if a curator is available!

A hidden gem that’s not talked about in blog posts or YouTube videos about visiting NYC (at least the ones I’ve seen). We got there totally by accident and it turned out we got a guided tour. To make it even better - all of it was free. Really worth visiting - the guides (rangers) know a lot about T. Roosevelt. Plus, the house itself is a nice museum. You can feel the atmosphere of the 19th century.

Cool museum of Teddy Roosevelt's childhood Manhattan home. I didn't take the tour (which was free, and highly recommended). There are some artifacts, photos, videos on the first floor. Worth a little side trip. Probably would take 30 minutes to see everything.
Sep 26, 2017 -
Free admission everyday! Nice museum showcasing the life and times of the first US President born in New York City. There are free guided tours showing the different rooms in the house, explaining their purpose and grandeur. The current building is beautiful but is only a reconstruction of the original one, which was demolished after a new owner took over. The Roosevelt family bought back the place after the President's death. Allot at least an hour when visiting.
