What clients say about City Opera Thrift Shop in New York (NY)
-
Excellent selection, reasonable prices. Mix of old and new. They're not trying to prices gouge either. Nice selecting of art, furniture and homeware.

As NY as it gets! A joyful experience. Staff is super friendly and relax, the stuff available there is quite interesting, of very good quality and prices are spectacular . When we visited, Robert was playing the piano and singing. The cold and rainy day turned in to happiest (¿hippiest?) shopping experience. If I lived in NY I would definitely buy my furniture there!

Lovely place! There is some construction happening in the area but they had signs up that made it easy to still find. Seating and dressing rooms were available. Lots of clothes, some shoes and books and other knick knacks, but mostly clothes when we were there. The only thing I would say is that it was definitely more vintage than thrifting. I saw varying prices from $35-$150+ depending on the clothing item. I generally consider a "thrift store" as most everything in store is less than $40. But would recommend if you want to find some cool pieces and are okay with spending a bit.

Beautiful thrift store ! I got a pair of manolos for a steal my size too !!!! Nice people and cute shop dog !
Dec 13, 2025 -
A true vintage store, not a thrift store posing as vintage. Everything is good quality and priced reasonably for the condition. It’s a bit out of the way from other vintage stores but well worth the visit.

Super cute place! Not a huge collection but all the things they have are cute. There is some level of curation. Liked the section with silk scarves! The area with plates etc was also really nice. I was traveling so couldn't bring anything big back with me but I'd definitely shop here if I was a local:)

How have I worked in NYC most of my life and not shopped at this thrift store? What a find! Everything is so beautifully curated and displayed. Is it Goodwill prices? No, but you will find gorgeous shoes, purses, and clothing that’s in absolutely perfect condition, with lots of high end brands. The staff are so lovely and gracious. Such a pleasure to shop here today, thank you Marlene and Fern!

Really nice treasures, but the owner/manager was unbelievably rude. My sister and I popped in on the way to dinner at 5:45. We were aware they close at 6, and were reminded this when we walked in. We are decisive buyers - when we find something we like we get it and don't putz around. We looked at the formal dresses, and not 1 min later were told very coldly again that they were closing at 6, and if we wanted to try anything on we needed to hurry. It was still only 5:50 when my sister tried on a dress she liked. I was completely turned off by the attitude, but waited around for my sister. The manager once again confronted me if I was looking for anything, hinting for us to leave, and I acknowledged she clearly didn't want us there. For some reason my sister did decide to buy the dress, with still 5 min to close. We endured audible sighs, eyerolls and scowls as she checked out. Apparently they get donations and the proceeds go to charity. They are really doing a disservice to it if this is how they regularly treat customers. There were shoes and other trinkets I would have quickly swept up, and been out of their hair and off to dinner.

I absolutely adored this shop. A great range of pieces at reasonable prices and the friendliest staff ever. I felt so welcome and comfortable here, I’d recommend it to everyone :)
Jul 14, 2025 -
More than a thrift shop… the selection is so well done, many very refined pieces and the lady is an angel. Thank you for all your words. Hope to see you very very soon!!
Jun 02, 2025 -
Terrible staff service - one long hair girl was so nice while the other one would interrogate you and made you so uncomfortable when you tried the cloths when she was away. All things were donated to this store but the clothes are overpriced. Avoid this place.
May 26, 2025 -
Great stuff horrible employee work there. You would think they would be nicer due to the service they are providing. You feel like a stranger in a different world when you arrive. Do not go there
Apr 17, 2025 -
I am so glad we came across this place on our last day in the city. The staff here was incredibly kind and they had an amazing selection of books.
Apr 05, 2025 -
A lot of neat one of a kind items in here, downstairs has furniture and kitchen items with glass or crystal. It’s a great place to thrift. Inventory cycles something new each time I went.
Feb 18, 2025 -
I finally took the time to explore my area. I found this shop online and I had to visit… so I did. They have a gorgeous selection of art, furniture, vintage glass- and dish-ware, as well as a wide range of clothes (men’s and women’s… mostly women’s). The ladies that helped me were friendly, and open, I felt welcomed as soon as I walked in. I was greeted with a smile and offered assistance from the get-go. Top notch service! As I understand, the selection rotates every few months, so you can often find new stock or things on sale. I will be going back!

This is a top tier thrift shop for a worthy cultural cause. I will thrift at all levels and price points. Love that shopping here is more a curated experience and prices are more moderate than one would find at the Goodwill or Housing Works. But things are presented in collections and well sorted. Recent visit was “World” themed for eclectic global influenced looks. Summer tunics and floaty pants. Gorgeous caftans. The limited shoes selection did include several Manolos that were priced $60-$90 and would need repair before wearing. There was furniture setup at the front and in the lower level. Can’t wait to see what the next collection will be. Only wish it wasn’t all the way west, since I’ll be in the area for gallery hopping - so no time to shop. And if I shop, I won’t want to drag my purchase from gallery to gallery. That’s only reason I don’t drop in more often.
Jun 09, 2024 -
I like the store and the items they have and I love the fact that it supports a nonprofit. However, I’m a bit annoyed at some of their sales tactics of getting you to come back. It was my first time in the store and I bought a painting and I wasn’t allowed to take it home right away because they wouldn’t need “two hours to prepare it.” So I spent an hour commuting back on a different day just to be initially told to take it off the wall myself ?and obviously nothing was prepared. That was really annoying and a waste of a two hour round trip. I would have come back when in the area regardless, but this was really an annoying waste of my time.

If you’re an everyday thrifter, this isn’t the spot. It’s really pretty inside, it’s overpriced. Not only that, the clothes does go towards office wear/middle aged woman wear. So if you’re in that demographic then this place is for you. It’ll just be around the price of walking into a nice store in the mall. The shoes were good prices though! Just not the best quality and small selection.
Apr 25, 2024 -
Stumbled upon this shop as I was gallery hopping - what a great find! Prices were great and if I lived in the City I would be shopping here regularly for art and furniture. Will be back on my next trip to NYC!
Feb 08, 2024 -
Went there for the first time today and was amazed at the selection of high-end women's clothes at reasonable prices. It's the holiday season and there were beautiful, festive tops, jackets, and dresses for New Years Eve parties. Downstairs, the furniture was superior to what is found in the usual thrift store. I highly recommend this place.
Dec 27, 2023 -
When walking down any street of the city, if I stumble upon any thrift store, you know I’m going inside. I’m so glad I went inside this one! The selection was top tier for me, everything from home furnishings to vintage glassware, coats, cowboy boots, and those fedora hats ? were rather impressive! The value for most of the things there were definitely adequate as I left, purchasing a molehair red vintage coat for about $150. They had everything from Coogi sweaters to military style and fireman coats. Service was average as the workers were able to answer questions and it seemed like they interacted only if you interacted with them. The cashier was using her phone behind the register until we were ready to ring up our purchases. I guess that would be OK in a no pressure to go out of your way atmosphere, but to me, it felt kind of standoffish. Besides that I could’ve stayed in this store for hours and buy everything inside if I had the money to do that. Go here!

The place is very nice and tidy also the prices are very reasonable especially the furniture but the only thing that I would like this store to improve will be the customer service well I just encountered one employee(A young man with dark hair) he did his job well but he was friendly at all actually he didn't say a single word when I was waiting at the check out, not a thank you, not even a hello when people entered. Well maybe he had a bad day and hopefully he will improve because that makes your shopping experience much better.
Sep 27, 2023 -
Had a great experience with them taking some furniture for donation. Fern turned around the pickup within a couple days of me offering the stuff to them (thanks to someone else canceling), including getting the certificate of insurance that my building needed. Pretty sure they can't usually make a pickup happen that quickly, but she did this time. And the pickup guys, Danny and Dennis, were very friendly and professional, and got the stuff out real quick.

I had the greatest experience dealing with this shop!.I needed to move and had a few pieces of furniture in excellent condition from very good stores and from Italy. I have contacted several charities but they would not recognize the quality of what I had. When I contacted Opera Thrift shop not only their curator Fern was able to see the value but meticulously organized everything and worked with me until the end of the transaction every step of it. The pick up was smooth, on time, fast and safe. The moving company was exelent Highly recommend.

A great curated selection of items. The store is well let, always clean and has plenty to sort through both upstairs and downstairs. The real treat is Marlene though and her ability to welcome you into the store. I highly recommend City Opera in Chelsea, and don't forget to say Hi to Marlene. Thank You for all your help!
Sep 19, 2022 -
One of the best thrift stores in NYC, because of its gorgeous selection! Some items are "high-end," so you might pay a little more -- but, not necessarily. It's random. Lovely Furniture, too! Definitely visit!
Jun 04, 2022 -
Amazing stuff reasonably priced. No junk in this shop! Totally worth a visit especially if you love shoes! Lots of great clothes too. Downstairs some great furniture and home stuff.
May 28, 2022 -
A strong well organized community based shop I felt, and staffs were very welcoming
Feb 06, 2022 -
What a gorgeous store for a fantastic cause! A beautiful mix of contemporary & vintage clothing and home furnishings. There's also a smattering of books. Everything is top quality. A wide variety of clothes - mainly women's fashion's, but a decent assortment of men's as well. Prices are reasonable - they are akin to a good consignment boutique - so, not cheap but the money is going to a good cause.

From the beautiful sounds of opera arias, classical and jazz music - to the interesting interior (once a bank) and wonderful customer service - this is hands down the best thrift store in NYC. For more than 40 years, this impressive shop has supported NYC opera. While they rely on donations, the store is lovingly curated with a classy and exquisite array of clothing, furniture, artwork, books and a much smaller selection of housewares and jewelry. Furniture was 50% and let me tell you - I saw some gorgeous "steals" I would have gladly schlepped to my daughter's apartment! They don't deliver and you need to arrange this yourself - if you live in the neighborhood, what a deal. We had a terrific chat with Marlene - a sweetheart who was one of the nicest and most personable individuals I've ever met at a thrift shop! She mentioned the monthly special events. Here's a shout out to you, Marlene! This lovely store makes me wish I lived in NYC!
