What clients say about New York City Sanitation Department in New York (NY)
-
I have to say that this clean up and response to the recent winter storm has been the worst in years . This administration is new so I believe there is a grace period I hope a lesson was learned and next time it's better. Home owners, building owners, and businesses are responsible for the sidewalk cleaning and the street should be cleaned thoroughly.

My husband and I shoveled and cleared our driveway. The sanitation truck, pushed a large boulder of ice in our driveway. We are Senior Citizens and Taxpayers, this is terrible. East 103, in Brooklyn NY. I am very upset. Suffer COPD AND HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE, not good at all.???

I know I'm wasting what dew brain cells that I have left saying anything, but it's no wonder, no surprise that everything about this country/city is such a mess and so completely dysfunctional.we have what amounts to the storm of the century and all that ou do is plow the streets for the motorists, when homeowners are allowed to get away with shirking their responsibility to shovel their sidewalks and allow ice to make walking hazardous. I have a few photos of the common area of the back of my building that the owner is neglecting the address is 1424 43rd Street Brooklyn NY 11219. It is full of ice and snow.

I live in Brooklyn - DSNY did an amazing job during and after yesterday’s storm! I ran into two gentleman today on Kane/Court Street hand shoveling for hours!! Thank you for a job well done!

Winter,Spring,Summer and Fall these are the true NYC workers, who deserve a big applause for their hard work.
Dec 09, 2025 -
My recent experience with DSNY has been extremely disappointing. A summons was issued to me and my neighbors without proper identification by the enforcement officer, which is required under the City Charter, the Mayoral Directive on public identification, and DSNY policy. When I called DSNY for clarification, the employee refused to identify himself and gave incorrect information. I filed a detailed 311 complaint with evidence, but DSNY closed it as “invalid” without review, which feels fraudulent and meant to avoid accountability. I still cannot obtain the name, title, or shield number of the employee who issued the summons, which prevents me from exercising my rights. This entire process has been unprofessional, dismissive, and hostile to due process. New Yorkers deserve transparency and honest enforcement, not evasive practices and closed doors. I hope DSNY leadership addresses these systemic issues.

The Mayor make it worst for us now they wants bin and is slavery because you need to put chains or the guys throw them around and it's harder for the workers. I find bins on my property that do not belong to me, I see on the camera how they leave then any place. You get tickets for trash left by people walking on the streets and leave left by city trees, this is abusive of the city .

The Air Blower For Porch Cleaning , you can buy on Amazon and Sanitation Cleaning Truck is the Worst Invention on Earth History. Wake up American People. I would like an explanation from sanitation about The sweeping ? Truck machines. Does this machine even clean our street ? The answer is it doesn’t clean our streets. It’s actually making the city more disgusting and dirty. The car is literally move dust and debris from one side to the other side, and causing a lot of dust in the air, it’s causing allergies to people, making our Parked car Dirty. Instead, the city need to create a sweeping machine with suction cup which collect all the street dust and debris and then the sanitation can recycle them. I request city to Ban Air Blower, please use to just move leaf, debris from the front porch to the other side, this is just pathetic. It making the neighborhood more disgusting and Dirty.

Thieves. My family have bundled small paper and cardboard items inside of larger boxes to prevent littering and we were ticketed. I sent in a mail in response to OATH and they are upholding the BS that A.R.(the person issuing the ticket) summitted. The ticket also stated that no one was home, however, there is always 1-2 people on the property at all times. My family purchased the new trash bin, per the department of sanitations new instructions and its been weeks with no information on when it will arrive. The city sanitation keeps changing their rules and when you try to follow them, you are punished. E.S. (the Hearing Officer) and anyone working for OATH should be embarrassed to be part of this scam.

Once again, I like to thank supervisor Scott Krupoff for helping out on Centerville Street where they continually dump garbage and he’s continually over there helping out getting rid of the garbage so we don’t have any rodents and the superintendent inside helps us out does a great job as well. The community here would like to thank you very much once again, thank you Scott and superintendent for all your help.

I live in Ridgewood on Cornelia Street between Onderdonk and Woodward. Today sanitation came by for recycling and left recycling all over the sidewalk and into the street. I had to go out myself with a recycling bag and pick up all the garbage that was left behind. I have lived here for 47 years and never seen such a thing.
Feb 16, 2024 -
I have an annoying neighbor who keeps putting her trash infront of my house and she also puts it out way before the regular trash pick up time. I have made several complaints and the department of sanitation isn't doing anything about it.I am very disgusted because raccoons and other animals will get into her garbage and make a mess infront of my house.
Mar 09, 2023 -
I am glad sanitation trucks are taking large objects, without appointment, on pick up day. I just wish the sanitation workers had a means to pick up trash that falls into the street while doing their pick ups. A broom and shovel perhaps?

I’ve just been notified that I have to compost my garbage. As of this time, I have 3 pails in my kitchen. 1 is for paper, 2 is for glass, tin and aluminum, 3 is for regular trash. #2 has to be rinsed . Fine. But I have to pay for the water to rinse my garbage. Now I need a 4th pail. I have nowhere to keep another pail. I’ve been very vigilant about recycling, but it’s getting to be too much. Is there going to be a penalty for not composting? I’m 82 years old and have to drag out all these pails to the curb. When is it going to be enough?

Used to live in Boro Park many years ago. Our neighborhood was kept clean by each person that lived there and with the hard working sanitation workers. The job is physical and not an easy one but they did it well. The benefits are good and were deserved. Moved to Bensonhurst, years ago and still their was a level of pride that the sanitation workers had with the neighborhood they serviced. Not the cast anymore. We as home owners should and do keep our property swept and put our trash containers on the street for easy access. Today I just witnessed a sanitation man throw the containers back to the street like a basketball after emptying. It's discusting. Not the first time. I used to stand out there when they came and said good morning and it was a different story. But I shouldnt have to. Where is the pride in ones job? In the private sector I would be counciled and eventually fired for such conduct. Lets raise the bar, start holding people accountable! I love Brooklyn but its times like this not so much!!

I scheduled a bulk pick-up for 06-10-2021.It was never picked up.I called today 11th. They told me that they did not know why it was not picked up. I was given an appointment for the next week. Mind you it is a heavy couch and two heavy mirrors which I have to take up and then put out next week. This is very unsatisfactory. I think these matters could be better handled.Appointments should never be given if there is not going to be a pickup. The weather was excellent on 06-10-2 so there was no excuse

I just saw a truck with the brooms attached..passed by with NO water and the dust it created while we all waited for the bus was criminal! And no its not because covid this happens a lot in Brooklyn and They Bronx sanitation Trucks must have water in those trucks to minimize the dirt in the air there are elderly and babies in our communities with asthma!

According to 311, Presidents Day is on the list of Holiday no pick up. And yet, recycling picked up. I did not put out garbage due to the fact it stated, no pick up. They never picked up before. Now I have 2 weeks worth of recycling due to no pick up with the snow. President's Day s/b off the list if they are picking up. Incorrect Information.
Feb 15, 2021 -
I have blue square garbage cans & paper on wheels for recycle and labeled on Staten Island on Richmond Ave, they are not heavy but the recycle workers refused to pick them up and empty them. Have called 311 three times and all they do is allow me to leave them out and I won’t get a ticket to next pick up. Which means I have to leave them out for 3 weeks since holidays also fall on Monday’s. I have had a supervisor here just to give a garbage bag to see if the sanitation men will take it, they did that time, but I shouldn’t have to buy they bags the lazy recycle sanitation man will pick up
Feb 11, 2020 -
I spent the last 3 weeks in NYC and after walking through certain neighborhoods I realize SOMEONE is not doing their job. Some areas such as the Upper West Side are disgusting. Filthy streets with garbage cans overflowing. Even on 8th & Broadway near Columbus Circle... the lack of trash cans is amazing in a city with so many tourists. Overflowing garbage. Someone is not doing their job. It's become a trash pit.

I was harassed yesterday by 2 sanitation workers in Rockaway Beach B101 Street and Shore Front Parkway.. They were on foot crossing the street against the red light, I had green light (near B94th and CBB exit ramp), I drove by them and kept on driving. Seven blocks later I pulled over to park car and next thing I know they pulled their truck right behind mine and stopped me from pulling into the spot. They got out of their truck, came up to my car and started yelling at me that my car got to close to them when they were jay walking. This occurred Saturday June 15th 8:30AM. Pictures show they are from QE14 depot near Beach 50th in Far Rockaway. I called 311 to complain, then NYPD came at 10AM and we discussed what happened. See pictures of workers and their truck. I will be making formal complaint of harassment and lack of professionalism.

Sanitation worker for the most part do an excellent job in the biggest and best city in the world! Yes...there are a few rotten apples but to all the complainers here...maybe your a rotten apple too if I ask your employer. So give the guys a break...your garbage, recycling, organics will get picked up....just relax!! Oh and the snow storm that crippled the city was the exception not the example of Sanitation's snow response which is usually on point and effective.
Jan 24, 2019 -
I can not seem to understand nor fathom why my car is treated with so much disrespect were I am literally parked several feet from the garbage and still it is significant amount of garbage residue on it. This has happen multiple times in which i had to literally get in the passenger side to start driving. I just want to say the personal who does pick up for Madison in Manhattan district 5 is doing the must horrible job. I will catch you guys rest assured.

I own my house and renovate things by myself very slowly and yet they don't want to take the few bags of garbage i put out. They only pick up what they want to and expect bribes to pick up what they don't want to. I make pickup so easy for them by separating and stacking accordingly and I get treated like I'm making their job harder even when I've offered to help them put them in the truck, which legally isn't my job. I want to wake up to an empty sidewalk which isn't today!
Jul 24, 2017 -
Sent in 2 snow removal complaints on march 15th for the March 13th snowstorm. They 'investigated' the complaints 14 days later and found no snow on the sidewalk at the reported property. WHAT A SHOCK! They also would have found no snow if they waited till July, so I don't know why they bothered 'rushing' to check out the complaint. The sanitation dept. is a joke, but not a very funny one. Numerous people, including myself, slipped and fell at these 2 locations, and Sanitation could care less.
Apr 04, 2017 -
Why can't the trash be totally emptied from our pails??? We cooperate and separate garbage and put it in a tied bags so the handsome, strong sanit men don't have to dirty their gloved hands. We have a separate pail for paper, yet they leave paper in the pail. We have a separate pail for bottles, cans etc. and they leave stuff in the pail. If we cooperate and make garbage tidy in clean pails all wrapped up for them why can't they empty, empty the entire pail???? Men: Do your job efficiently, it's a good job with good benefits. Be proud & grateful. We live on a street that has only 3 blocks. What's the problem?

This is useless ! As usual NYC looped recordings. I have two almost full cans of Raid Ant and Roach. The cans slipped out of my hand and the black plastic spray top popped off and cracked. SC Johnson were great. Answered e-mail quickly, and gave phone number to call. Of course Dept of Sanitation has no place given for my zip. I do not know if it is just my zip or all of Brooklyn (doubtful). I tried Staten Island, yes, but garbled, 300 something. Of course, no phone number. So I tried this place. Useless recordings unless you know your persons extension. Around and around, Is everyone on lunch?Lest see if this goes through with no stars. Nope.
Jun 07, 2016 -
I live on Braddock ave in Bellerose. The garbage men are horrible here...they drop garbage all over the street and sidewalks when they are emptying the cans and leave it. Once I actually said something to one of them and he stated, "It's not my job to pick garbage off the ground" and I said in return "even if you drop it"? he shrugged his shoulders and moved on. What ever happened to taking pride in ones job? They just don't care and It always looks like a hurricane blew through here when they are done. The worst I have ever seen from any sanitation dept. I am only giving them one star because it would not allow me to proceed unless I hit a star. In my book they get nothing. The worst!
