What clients say about South Ferry in New York (NY)

Clean, renovated station, 1 trains could be a tiny bit more consistent, but is great otherwise. Needs an underground connection to 4/5/R/W during cold weather.
Jan 12, 2026 -
Last stop on the 1 Line to go see the Statue of Liberty. Beware of the people right outside the station trying to sell you ferry tours, some of them don’t like to take “No” for an answer.
Dec 16, 2025 -
My sister, niece, brother and I have been to this station months ago and that this is a station and that it has connections to the N, R, and W trains also that it is the last stop on the 1 train. There were many people getting on and off train.
Jul 06, 2025 -
The Staten Island ferry is FREE! Becareful of the ticket touts outside who lie about the view of the statue of liberty and tell you, you will be 9 miles away from the statue if you don't buy their ferry tickets that cost over $40 dollars. Its a lie. USE THE FREE FERRY

A nice and (compared to a lot of other NY stations) tidy station. Had to explain to my sister that no, the 1 train literally can not go southbound. Other than that, it's a pretty nice station. However, this is more of a complaint about the train, there was absolutely no AC (as most of the MTAs R62s do not) and it was still a sauna in there despite the windows being open.

There’s usually police and homeless outreach every night at this train station. Bathroom service at this station from 7am -7pm. There’s elevators and escalators on the 1 line. Whitehall which is the R/W line which is connected to this train station only have escalators no elevator on the platform.

Great way to watch the Liberty Statue from a fairly close distance. You can get to staten island for free if you take this ferry. Also, the infrastructure is kind of old, but if you want a better ride, you can take the paid ferry.
May 16, 2023 -
Beware of scam artists trying to sell tickets outside the station. We had official ferry tickets, and upon exiting the station, men with "guide" uniforms tried to tell us our ferry tickets were no good since we were a few minutes late. Ignored them and had absolutely no issues taking the ferry with our tickets.

The ferry to Staten Island is free! One of the best things to do in New York if you're a tourist.
Oct 20, 2022 -
Great service. Ideal if you just want to have a ride by the Liberty Island.
Mar 04, 2020 -
I LOVE this new South Ferry Subway Station, recently (within the last approximately three to five years) erected JUST outside the Staten Island Ferry Terminal on or at Whitehall Streets, State Streets, and South Streets. This station used to be Terrible as far as beauty and ambiance. Now it looks very modern and very cool. One of my favorite Metropolitan Transportation Assosiation's train stations, especially the modernized ones. 5 stars

Bathrooms don't have locks. There's graffiti in the stall. The urinal doesn't have a blue tab. It needs a air freshener automated sprayer. The bathroom has no soap or purell dispenser Womens bathroom looks cleaner. Its lined with glow in the dark lining
Nov 19, 2019 -
Very convenient subway station to get to liberty state park ferry and Staten island ferry. Gets you off right off next to battery park. Quite convenient to get uptown as well. Frequencies like other subway cars is quite good even on weekends.
May 08, 2019 -
Shame on you. Do they really smoked cigarettes inside the cart? How is that possible. Do you ever clean the carts!? And you like to raise the price for a ticket. What for. During the weekends it's disgusting,as you can see. I mean come on we know that is 24/7 but still. We pay 2.75$ isn't enough for you to do the job!?
Feb 16, 2019 -
If you love art, don’t miss the nice mural of Manhattan by the stairs leading to the platform. Station itself is relatively clean but like most other stations, does not have restrooms. Head to the Staten Island Ferry station (a 5-minute walk) if you need restrooms.
Oct 30, 2018 -
Really clean and tidy on the inside. It’s worth a ride considering it’s free. Easy way to see the Statue of Liberty too
Aug 20, 2018 -
Ever since this station reopened following the damage it sustatianed during Hurricane Sandy, I have loved it ever since, like 34 Street-Hudson Yards, and the other stations on the 2nd Ave Subway, the station is tech savvy and smells great most of the time, however with the 1 train using old train cars, it feels odd when you embark on the train and the lighting changes from bright to yellowish. Otherwise this station has 0 problems!

Staten Island is the southern most area of the 5 boroughs of New York. Taking a free boat ride to the island is fantastic since it also takes you closer to the Statue of Liberty. There are lots of things to do on the other side and thus it is recommended to take some time out and visit the beauty and nature.
Mar 05, 2018 -
It is a very nice place to spend time alone or accompanied by your partner with your family very pleasant trip Although it is very short. of the very few places in New York that free There are always a lot of people to come with time to enjoy the trip and for that to read it on the outside to be able to take pictures videos use the camera and all that
Dec 22, 2017 -
After 5 years, it's good to have the new platform back in service after Hurricane Sandy. 2 trains end here on weekends due to Sandy Recovery work on Clark St Tunnel. Just watch out for cyclists especially on the bikeway when you get out of the station.
Nov 27, 2017 -
This stop is right outside Staten Island Ferry. If you want to see the Statue of Liberty for free from boat, just take this free ferry. If you want to get onto the island, then you can pay for the tourist boat. Note there are so many touts outside telling you you're going the wrong way and Statue of Liberty is the other way, just ignore them and head to the Staten Island Ferry building, once you are in the doors they cannot bother you any further.
Oct 18, 2017 -
Beware the vendors who sell paid trips to the island with the Statue of Liberty, they stand in your path, grab you, and try to stop children to confuse their tourist parents and make them pay for a ride to Liberty Island when the free Staten Island ferry offers great views for free.
Jul 18, 2017 -
Great station with a large island platform, very frequent train service, air conditioning, led lighting, escalators, AND it's wheelchair accessible. There's also free WiFi and electronic departure boards. vvv (Old Jan.2017 review) vvvv Currently still using the old loop station, which can only hold 5 train cars. Transfer available to the R and W trains via a passageway. Connection available to the Staten Island Ferry upstairs.
Jun 30, 2017 -
Free boat for Staten Island. Some people are taking it to see the Statue of Liberty without to pay like we did. Good tip to know
Mar 30, 2017 -
Get the free Staten Island ferry for picture opportunity of the skyline of manhattan and Statue of Liberty
Feb 26, 2017 -
Very clean. "This is a South Ferry bound 1 train. The next and last stop will be South Ferry. Please move forward to exit to the first 5 cars. The doors on the rear 5 cars will not open. The next and last stop is... SOUTH FERRY." "This is... SOUTH FERRY!" Charlie Pellet: Transfer is available to the R Train. Transfer is available to the Staten Island Ferry." F line voice: "Transfer is available to the m15 SBS." "This is the LAST STOP on this train. EVERYONE please leave the train, THANK YOU FOR RIDING WITH Mta New York City Transit."
Nov 14, 2016 -
We took this ferry to see the Statue of Liberty. It is so much better since it is free, and very little line-up. It goes reasonably close, so you can still see the statue pretty well. When going FROM Manhattan, go to the RIGHT side of the ferry. When going TO Manhattan (from Staten), go to the LEFT side of the ferry. I will suggest other people to do this ferry from now on.
