Chelsea was awful. She said she was the manager. Wow. When I tried to pay with a gift card, her response was “what is that? We don’t take that.” Thats funny because I bought the ace gift card on ace’s page that specifically said to use it at this store. Chelsea was as rude as possible and had absolutely no empathy. Avoid this store
Its listed on Google as 430 closing and twice when I rang i was told (out by) 430. Today the door was locked by 424pm. Enough time for a drill bit, I reasoned. But - fair enough - the door sign says 4:25pm. I requested the change on Google. Let's see.
Saddened to read comments. Hardware stores have historically always been tense places (think "fork handles" sketch) with sneering males ready to belittle customers who dont know the correct terms for items they want. Ive become so used to it that I try to think of it as 'hardware store theatre-in-the-round': all the out-of-work, off-broadway luvvies Method Acting for their lives, and resumes (since all of the subway spots to play 'crazy person outside a subway' have been taken). However, its a shame I have to make this mental leap to survive a store so well-located, and fairly well stocked. I suspect the attitude (made worse by some uncertainty knowledge of stock - inc safety knowledge)comes from the pre-globalisation age. In some respects its a good thing. As in my case, staff shouldn't have to work unpaid time if i arrive late... though I dont know if i agree this is true when their published hours conflict with their stated hours. 4:25pm is jolly early for 8th Ave. I value my local, locally run (?) stores and dont want to be moaning about closures in years to come when I could have done more at the time. Perhaps a training day to watch Annie and a team watch of that TED talk video where they discovered simply biting a pencil to force your smile muscles into action MAKES the individual feel more positive. Seriously, I dont know. But no one will die if you try something. I promise. (Terms and conditions apply).
Very rude. They are listed as an Ace Hardware but went went to use an Ace hardware coupon they said they don't accept it. Terrible customer service. I will never shop at this location ever again.
I have been here many times over the years. It is the closest hardware store to my office. My first experience was okay, but a little weird. Staff is quick to ask you for help, but it isn’t genuine for most of them. Most of them of them are rude. The reviews are accurate, but I just read them for the first time today. I went in yesterday to grab some potting soil for the plants in my office. Also wanted to grab a pot. One man asked me if I needed help like he was dreading the answer. When I said no and told him what I needed and pointed to its location at the end of the aisle. He seemed genuinely happy and said okay. I grabbed the potting soil, turn around and the older man who is referred to in other reviews was right behind me trying to pretend like he wasn’t watching me. I wish people like that could experience it from the other side. He had to jump up as soon as I walked in and ran or briskly walked to catch up to me so quick. He is typically at the front door, usually sitting across from the cash register. He was up front when I came in. I’ve purchased the soil from here before, so I walked straight to it. I was going to grab another pot and a few other things, but decided to switch it up for this place. I like to promote local business, especially mom and pop stores over big box or Amazon, but I ordered the rest of my stuff from Amazon. I am not going back again. It sucks to just walk into a store to make a purchase and have people treat you like you are less than and walk out having to mentally deal with that. Wether it is trying to convince yourself that you probably read into it, wondering why me, trying to shake it off, or just carrying the horrible feeling you have inside for the rest of the day. Since I returned to the office, I rarely wear a suit. I think my experiences that were positive, were only positive because on my business attire. The experiences now that I wear jeans with button downs, collared shirts or sweater is a definitely different. It kind of sucks. The man who followed me was so nice the first time I went there. It kind of touched me. I walked out feeling good about supporting his business or place of employment. I guess that’s way it’s dat two and I am still trying to shake it off. Guess it was the suit.
You deserve 2 stars only because you have a polite and professional man working there who helped me with the paint — the one with the white beard.
The cashier and the old man with white hair are so rude, as if I’m the one forcing them to work there. An old man with white hair asked if I needed help; I said that someone was already helping me, and he started getting nervous. What’s wrong with this store?
If they don’t like their job, they should find another one — no need to ruin other people’s mood!
Edited: I guess it depends who you talk to and when you go, some of the staff are actually very friendly and helpful, so I adjusted my review accordingly.
Convenient and good selection, but terrible, awfully rude staff. They closed early and were super rude about it. And even when they’re open, they act like they hate their customers and they hate being there. Just close up shop or sell the business if you hate it so much.
Simply asked for some help in the store and you would swear the guy “helping me” was acting like the task would be taking up hours of his life, major attitude for no reason. Poor Customer service, maybe don’t ask people if they need help and then switch up your stance on it.
A few weeks ago a guy named Christian gave me a warm welcome and helped me grab a few things I needed, he proceeded to take all the items to the cash register to help me check out. Awesome guy!
I've not had a chance yet to go inside this store, but I did want to applaud their customer service. I spoke with Doug yesterday, who was very helpful and went above and beyond to find something that would/might fit my needs. Thank you for your time and help, I'm sure I'll be calling again in the future!
Absolutely amazing store. I've never been treated so well, and with such eagerness to help. I called and coordinated the purchase and Uber pick-up of picture hanging hardware from North Carolina. Douglas Wright was the gentlemen who helped me. He did so much to make sure that this hardware got to the driver in a timely fashion. Even to running outside and tracking the driver down. He even missed his lunch to help!!!!! I cannot recommend them enough!
[Update on my problem getting keys copied at Scheman & Grant Hardward on Feb 27 2024. The store's owner responded very quickly to let me know he was sorry I'd had a bad experience at his store, that he'd dealt with my concern, and would be okay with issuing a store credit for the keys I'd purchased. All that makes me think my experience was probably not typical. He also asked a good question about my earlier post which I realize should have been clearer about exactly how many keys I'd bought and what I thought was wrong with them. The answer: I'd purchased four new keys total -- two to open a lock whose original/working key I brought in with me, and two others to open a different lock whose original/working key I brought in with me.]
My wheelchair broke because of the rough streets here in Manhattan. I am in trouble here because without my wheelchair I am stuck. I was so fortunate to find this Ace hardware store on the next block. The kind man who met us at the door was so helpful and took the broken screw and walked to the back of the store to find a replacement. These Ace Hardware stores must have a magic collection of stuff in back because they have everything that I have ever needed and, trust me, they build these expensive wheelchairs with strange hardware! So, when the gentleman comes out he is holding up the new screw and I am so happy. This man is my hero!! 50¢ and I am back in business! I’m not here to editorialize but I never get this much help from the big box stores and in the middle of Manhattan to top it off! Thank you!!
I came into this store to make a copy of my car key. Got it done then upon trying the key, it only opened the door but wont start the car; i checked back-in and spoke to the man who was in charge of they key dept; he barely looked me in the eye and said there's nothing he can do about it; tons of attitude and bad energy from an old man to be acting like that. All i wanted was for him to take a look or offer any alternatives. Poor customer experience and very bad customer service. Wont go there again. ( Instead of focusing on the real issue, you have time to go read my other reviews; this speaks volume about your business as a whole. My experience has been poor and didnt live up to the expectation. I have great reviews when the experience was worth it. I would review these too)
Everything is super expensive and has the worst customer service at all. Especially, the front cashier lady has disgusting attitude. I bought two toilet seats after showing them the picture of my existing product. The staff pointed out one for me and obviously it didn't work because he didn't even look at the pictures seriously. Then, they refused to get me the refund by stating no body in NYC will take the refund on toilet seats, which is a full lie. The front cashier lady even threw the box at me with the attitude. I asked her in good manner and that's what I got in return. Although they finally refunded one toilet seat after all, I still wasn't satisfied in customer service.
Everything is super expensive. Twice the price at home depot or lowe's. Also they will not return or give any store credit. My employee bought two wrong tools ( a level without a ruler and a T square instead of buying a level with a ruler which i had sent him to get ) and I went back to return or get store credit for them after the weekend ( within a couple of days ) and they bluntly refused to do anything about it. Rude customer service. I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone because there are plenty of places in the city who value customer service more.
Just purchased a plunger and was looking for the best one. These guys were very helpful and got me in and out in less than a minute. I didn’t think that was possible but bravo.
Extremely rude staff! I had called ahead and told them I am on my way and that I needed something urgently. I got there at 3:46 pm (after a subway ride and running for 4 blocks) and the store was supposed to close at 3:45 that day. The staff literally slammed the door in my face and when I said I had called ahead they shrugged and said that means nothing and turned around and walked away.
Well stocked store with a good assortment of supplies. Friendly, knowledgeable staff are always willing to help. My office is across the street, and we all shop here.
I'm always in a state when I shop here as its normally after long international flights, and straight to setting up a trade show! I LOVE how helpful, and compassionate all the staff are, and I come back every year!
ordered paint waited 45 minutes and than they told me they messed up the paint i asked for a refund abd got an attitude from the front desk also she called everyone a retard would like her to get fired(shes in the pictures)
Rude and unwelcoming. Stood at register for 10 minutes before anyone bothered to help me. 10 days for exchange came in on the 11th day after a holiday closure and no one would help me at all. Store is cluttered and dirty.
Use these guys all the time for my home needs and small business. The whole staff is incredibly inviting and helpful as well as knowledgeable. Neighborhood hardware store makes you feel like your not on 8th Ave. I highly recommend them for your painting, lighting and all hardware needs.
The manager told me I couldn't return a couple of $12 fans I purchased yesterday. He told me "i definitely can't re-sell this one" because the little paper/metal tie wasn't on the cable securely. However, he was happy to steal them back from me for free when I said I didn't have a use for them. I walked out without the fans, with $24 less dollars in my pocket, disappointed in humanity.
I'm always impressed by the customer service. There is often someone waiting at the front ready to point you to wait you need without getting all sales-y. They have an excellent selection of fasteners and other hard to find pieces and parts. And I don't think I've ever had to wait in line to check out. I can run in on my lunch break, grab what I need and go. Love this place.
