Perhaps I had misplaced expectations.
Not located on a farm, and the house was tiny. I applaud the attempt to preserve this home for future generations to view though.
I visited this wonderful little museum on Friday 04 October. I was on vacation from Liverpool (UK), staying in Harlem. I always planned to visit, and was glad that I did. It's an atmospheric place. You can feel the history there. Both young staff members (one male, one female) were very pleasant on the day that I visited. It's remarkable really, that this place still exists in Manhattan. General Admission is only $3. Crazy with today's prices. I spent the rest of the day exploring Inwood's lovely parks. I then had some nice food and a few beers in a couple of local bars before heading back to Harlem. I liked Inwood, and I will probably return.
An enjoyable museum describing a unique piece of Manhattan heritage. The house is carefully preserved and it feels like you are walking back in time. Staff are helpful and the small shop has a lot of information and local historical booklets. I respect that they have included references and information about the first people and slavery origins of the original farming communities. Affordable $3 entry at time of writing. Nice and cool in summer!
I am a native New Yorker and just visited this gem for the first time. It is not only a beautiful oasis but contains a treasure of history, both pleasant and unpleasant, but crucial to know. Melissa, the Director was outstanding with her knowledge and hospitality. I highly recommended this Museum to anyone interested in a unique NYC experience that gives insight into the city’s layered and somewhat unknown history. It is also just a very peaceful place to visit. It is located in a fabulous neighborhood as well. Definitely check it out!
I am very disappointed at the cluelessness of the Dyckman Farmhouse staff with the scheduling of a lecture on the immigrant history of Inwood for tomorrow evening, the 2nd day of the holiday of Shavuot - effectively denying the experience to the observant Jewish community members who will be observing the festival.
I love this little house. As children, we would come on school trips. It looked so big, but now, as an adult, everything looks so small. I adore the history and the fact that it's still standing in the middle of Inwood. It's a must-see if you're in the area. Trust me, when you're in the backyard, you're going to feel like you're not even in the city.
Really interesting to see the history of this location and farm. Has signs everywhere explaining what life was like, as well as artifacts they found before building the house.

Incredible history, beautifully preserved, and I really appreciate that those who are in charge of preserving and honoring this historic site also discuss the history of the many enslaved and free people who built and made this house what it is. They honor all parts of the Dyckman Farmhouse history and they are actively working to find as much information as they can. Such a wild thing to see in New York City and to be able to walk through it was a walk back in time.
Beautiful little slice of history in NYC. Interns working are knowledgeable and friendly. They host free community and education events that are a delight. They don’t gloss over the dark sides of history and are looking to broaden their understanding of what people’s stories went untold in the area (enslaved people, Indigenous people, etc). Highly recommend!
Fascinating Dutch farm house in Inwood. Shines light on the relatively unknown history of slavery in New York. The "Hessian hut" on the property is equally fascinating. The staff and in particular the guide to the Hessian hut were super nice and knowledgeable.
If you love history, architecture, and folks who are engaging about these topics please visit the Dyckman Farmhouse museum. Fabiola and Holly are extremely knowledgeable about the place and surrounding area! (they will answer any question you have about the house and surrounding area) The care put into this place by everyone who is involved is very apparent. Really enjoyed my time here when I visited on October 2nd. What's super cool is in the back is a rebuilt Hessian hut using all original materials found on the old lands of the Dyckman property. This truly is a hidden gem in Manhattan. Tickets are required to see this place but they are super affordable ($ 3 on their website and no fees) and well worth the admission. Another highlight is you can do a self-guided tour and take your time admiring all the rooms in the house. What else needs to be said: please visit this great museum!
Tip: they do keep the door in the front locked however just knock and someone will greet you.
A previous reviewer, Monica Matos, put it aptly, "a hidden jewel". I will not go into the history, as I often do on many of my reviews but suffice to say that the farmhouse was probably already built by circa 1784, and the Dyckman museum site does a great job on the history ( https://dyckmanfarmhouse.org/ ). What I will point out is the notion that the farm stretched from the Hudson River to the Harlem, imagine that. All the buildings, large and small, as far as you can see, came after. Quite amazing the place has survived and been preserved here in the heart of such a densely populated area.
Recently went as part of my child's class trip, it was very interesting plus a lot of fun for kids and adults alike. The children were able to eat their lunch on the picnic benches in the backyard, it was a chilly day so the adults were freezing since we weren't running around like the kids were, I imagine the yard is pretty nice and cool in the summer. We've also been there as a family for their Fall Festival (some pictures are from then) and we had a lot of fun, drinking beer and apple cider. Very nice historical place to visit.
How wonderful finding such history in upper Manhattan. The Dyckman Farmhouse Museum is a great place for children and adults. Hands on apple cider pressing. So cool!! The personnel were friendly, helpful. Wow, the army bunker was so interesting. Hey there Teo Turtle! You helped keep the kids further occupied. And thanks for the books

Absolutely loved touring this amazing farmhouse in the middle of NYC! Lots of history and very interesting portrayal of farm life. This is the original house. Not air conditioned...but we were invited to sit on the back porch of the house. Lovely gardens! Not wheelchair accessible.
I still can’t believe there is a farmhouse from 1784 in the middle of Inwood surrounded by restaurants, schools, houses.
Been wanted to chexk it out for years but today we only took pictures outside as it is closef on Tuesdays.
Little gem.
The Dyckman family's homestead. Well preserved and a hidden jewel of the neighborhood. Most pass it by without giving it a glance. I enjoy walking the grounds taking in the flowers and imagining what this area was like in the 1800's. It's such a beautiful house, the interior is just precious. The porches are also lovely.
I was walking on Broadway Towards 207 st and liked the night view .. it looked Unique from surrounding Buildings, so I took this picture.. Just found out it's a Historic Place. ??
This is a
nice place to learn history of early settlers in Manhattan. They also have some kids activities and events, also exhibitions by local artists.
Opens 11:00am-4:00pm Thursday - Saturday.
And during the summer they also open Sundays 11:00pm - 3:00pm.
A lovely historical venue, for anyone who would like to time travel back 235 years. As an added bonus, interesting contemporary artwork complementing the antique interior furnishings, and quite an interesting exhibit on Inwood's Japanese population between the First and Second World Wars. And definitely tour the garden to see the magnificent old trees and outbuildings.
Nice old house/museum in the otherwise highly developed neighborhood of Inwood. Learned about the Dyckman family and their way of life in what was then New Amsterdam. Entrance is free and an hour is enough to visit the site.
