Had our room cancelled today by hotel employee, Gwyen Moses, without recourse available. The hotel contacted me a few days ago to have me update an expired credit card on file. The hotel threatened to cancel my reservation by 4pm that day if the card was not updated. I followed their instructions to the letter and updated my card on the Marriott website. Today, I received an email from Gwyen saying they had cancelled my reservation because the card wasn’t updated, when it was. To make matters worse, the hotel then wouldn’t rebook me and said the hotel was full. This is how they treat Platinum Marriott members. Do not do expect fair customer service from Gwyen nor this hotel. The previous reviews on poor customer service are 100% spot on.

We stayed here in October. I'd always wanted to stay in this hotel, so I was pretty excited. Unfortunately, we had an awful experience. Our room was 82 degrees. We called down to the desk or spoke to the concierge several times on the matter. We were then told that the destination fee we paid could be used at the hotel bar, except the bar was closed that night. In addition, the front entrance was closed and we had to enter through a humid service hallway. The temperature in our room never even got fixed, it was difficult to sleep, even with the window wide open. I was so incredibly disappointed that we paid extra because this place is legendary, and then had such a miserable experience.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Five-Star Service, Old-School Hospitality, Unmatched in NYC Our recent four-night stay at The Algonquin Hotel was nothing short of extraordinary. I can say without hesitation that this was one of the best hotel experiences we’ve had anywhere in the world. The level of service, warmth, and genuine humanity displayed by the staff was remarkable — and rare, especially in a busy New York City property. At the front desk and throughout the lobby, Maria (the front desk manager) set the tone: funny, personable, and endlessly helpful. Alongside her, Marcus, Jimmy, Tenvin, and Sean each brought their own unique style, yet every interaction carried the same personal touch and joyful eagerness to help. Whether assisting guests, chatting with us while we enjoyed a cigar outside, or helping complete strangers on the street with directions, they treated everyone with the same care and respect. Watching them seamlessly balance hospitality and humanity was genuinely impressive. John, our breakfast waiter each morning, was an absolute gem. Attentive, friendly, and effortlessly warm — he made every morning start on a high note. That kind of consistency and kindness is unforgettable. A special thank-you as well to Mildred and Kaba from the housekeeping team. They were delightful throughout our stay — efficient, caring, personable, and wonderfully detail-oriented. Their pride in their work truly showed. We have stayed at Marriott properties around the globe, and as a Lifetime Titanium Bonvoy member, I don’t say this lightly: the service at The Algonquin ranks among the very best we’ve ever experienced — if not the best. We now have a home every time we visit New York City. Bravo. Well done. Truly exceptional.

The hospitality was fantastic all around, a great stay! The only real downside was the Hamlet has retired and we were excited to meet him. The rooms are small, but that’s expected in NYC. Depending on your needs, there is not a fridge or microwave in the room but there is ice available. There’s also a lot of street noise - but again - expected in NYC. We put the room’s fan on and it drowned out the street noise pretty well. We enjoyed the hotel’s proximity to Bryant Park, Grand Central Station, and Times Square. The food and drink at The Blue Bar were good as well - we used our daily $45 resort fee there. We’d stay here again - after the new concierge cat is on board!

Genuinely bad. For context, I’m a Hyatt Globalist (consistently spend 60+ nights in hotels per year), and wanted to give Marriott an open-minded chance. I’m now glad to know choosing Hyatt over Marriott was the correct move. Stayed at this hotel in December where I stood at the bar for 20 minutes without being served, and then decided to leave without anything. The room has a significantly marked desk, an unclean shower glass wall, and smells like old dirty carpet. Small details like rough single ply toilet paper make it evident that the hotel cuts corners. The bathroom comes with disposable paper cups wrapped in plastic, and the soap is bolted to the wall like a Holiday Inn Express, which, for the price point, is unacceptable. For anyone loyal to Marriott, I urge you to try alternatives.

I have stayed at the Algonquin many times through the years and it has always been a nice experience. Not so much this time. The location is excellent, but the staff at the front desk was not very welcoming. The room, a suite, was old and had issues including a non-working TV, no conditioner in the bathroom, nonworking light above the bed, and very erratic heat. All of this for a very steep price. No refrigerator, the safe was locked, and no extras at all. I understand that New York is expensive, but there was no effort put into our stay. We’ll be staying elsewhere next time.

3.5/5 Mediocre stay at the Algonquin Hotel. Ok overall, but hotel is quite overpriced, rooms are small and outdated, and front desk service is unfriendly. Treat guests like it’s a privilege for them to stay there. Charge $45 resort fee - which gives you credit at the bar. Don’t like the forced spending fee - very annoying. The best pro of the hotel is location - a few blocks away from Rockefeller center and Rockettes show. Great location for sightseeing and shopping. Front door staff is super friendly. Overall, fine stay but don’t recommend.
Dec 03, 2025 -
Service in restaurant is poor. The wait staff are never visible and takes forever for them to appear to take an order. The breakfast sandwich was really good and bed super comfy.
Dec 03, 2025 -
Poor experience - The hotel is beautiful, I didn’t make it past the front desk. The doorman was aggressive. The front desk staff seemed reluctant to be help me, and “could not find my reservation” but did not offer any resolution. I left and went to a different hotel. Other guests seemed to be treated well - I am black…..

We have always loved to stay at the Algonquin Hotel. With that being said, our last visit was heart wrenching as we have not been in a couple of years. All of the charm and the magic of this hotel has been completely sucked out by the renovations. The people checking in and checking out as we were standing there seemed to be more interested in other places and trying to save a dollar while they were staying there. Very sad that the round table nostalgia, and the beautiful cats that would greet us are now a figment of the past.
Nov 29, 2025 -
The staff was incredibly attentive and thoughtful in every aspect of their service. The hotel itself is old, but in the most charming way full of character and with a truly spectacular history behind it. Every corner seems to tell a story, making the stay feel unique and special. Overall, a wonderful experience thanks to the exceptional staff and the hotel’s rich heritage.

My check-in experience was very disappointing. When I first arrived, I was guided to the front desk and before even acknowledging me, the associate (Malissa D) immediately yelled “I’ll be with you when I’m ready” without even looking up. I asked if they had a business center and again, without eye contact, she just said “on the second floor.” Considering I had just walked in, I didn’t even know where the elevator was and she offered no guidance. Throughout the entire interaction, Malissa D never smiled, was extremely aggressive in her tone, and made me feel completely unwelcome. This is not the type of service I would expect, especially during the first impression of a stay.

Friendly front desk ladies . Lobby was clean and the man was extremely helpful he would get a taxi just kind staff. The restaurant food was excellent and great presentation. Lastly, our rooms was neat and clean and quiet and the ladies. That did housekeeping was kind and wonderful. Will return back one day

This was my first time at The Algonquin. I really enjoyed it. It's an older hotel, which I like and it's in good condition. My room was fairly small, but that's not unusual in Midtown. It was located in the back of the hotel, so it was quiet, which is unusual. The location on 44th near 6th was perfect! I was only 2-3 blocks from the shows I went to and also close to Times Square. Service at the hotel was excellent.
Oct 13, 2025 -
Beautiful hotel but HORRIBLE service. Don’t be in a rush to check in or out, and definitely check your room 3 times before you leave. If you forget something YOU pay to get it back. You could spend $600 on a room for less than 24 hours and spend $300+ entertaining clients at the bar, but even if you have status with Marriott, they don’t care about you.

Smallish hotel with an interesting history. Our room was nice. There was nothing wrong with it, but there was nothing extraordinary about it either. We tend to stay in the mid-range hotels, and spending $400-$500 a night is not a crazy expense for us. I'm just not used to hotel prices in NYC. Compared to other hotels in the area, this was a bargain. My bill for 2 nights was around $1100. The location was absolutely perfect. Walking distance to the Theater District and Times Square. The staff at reception was friendly, cordial, and very helpful. The rest of the staff left me feeling that they were annoyed if I asked for anything. Maybe it's a New York thing. Overall, considering price and location, I give it a thumbs-up and would stay there again.

Check in experience was just plain bad. The woman at the front desk was quite unpleasant and clearly didn’t want to be there. The lobby appeared nice and newly renovated. The rooms are tiny and appeared to have taken a beating and they just painted over the dings and dents. Windows were so filthy I couldn’t barely see through them and couldn’t close the window tightly because of the cheesy air conditioner hanging out of it.|I would not stay here again.

We were so excited for our stay until we actually arrived. Patrice was less than considerate to say the least. She was very unhelpful with checking in and for someone that has stayed at a reserve property in Thailand made me think twice about ever booking with Marriott. On one occasion we were next in line and Patrice looked to the customers behind us and started asking them to come to the front and completely disregarded us as if we were not there and then when we looked at her and said we were next, she gave us a dirty smirk. Throughout the rest of the day, we would see her at the front desk and she would not even look our way. Completely disrespectful and unprofessional.
Oct 09, 2025 -
If I could give 0 starts on service I would. I called to simply ask a few questions about a reservation my company made of 3 rooms for a week long stay and the front desk representative Marissa was extremely rude. Do not stay at this hotel if you plan to interact with the front desk- do all online and self check in, otherwise you are in for a VERY RUDE experience.

Unfortunately, this hotel is in major need of renovation. Wallpaper was pealing as was paint in various locations. Mattress may have been original, as it was as worn as any I’ve experienced. Elevators appeared to have never been polished. It comes across as shabby and not at the level of an Autograph collection hotel. ||||We’re Lifetime Platinum with Marriott, and we love some of their properties. However, Marriott apparently has increasingly lax standards, and we’re finding it wise to look beyond hotels in the BonVoy group. ||||In addition to upkeep and appearance issues, cleanliness was deficient. Without going into detail, the toilet clearly had not been cleaned before we arrived. Then there’s the obnoxious $45/day Destination Fee. Just increase rates and call it what it is.||||Once and done for us at this hotel.

The smallest hotel room I’ve ever stayed at in my life. If there were a category for most overpriced hotel or value for the money, this hotel has the lowest value for the money I’ve ever stayed at. Along with your $1000 a night stay you get a credit to use in the restaurant or wherever. At 11:35 AM I went to the restaurant and asked for a lunch menu. I was told they didn’t start serving lunch until 12 o’clock. No bend. Comically, small rooms and poor restaurants service. Find a better option.

Did not have an overall great experience at this hotel; was not as impressed as I thought I would be. The bar was nice, and the $45 credit was a good perk I suppose, but I was still pretty frustrated with the lackadaisical nature in which my concern with my hotel room was handled (or wasn't handled in this case). The A/C in my room didn't work, and I asked twice to have someone look at it, but no one did. It wasn't the greatest experience, and the room was really dusty, so I'm assuming someone hadn't stayed in there in a while, which may have been why no one even noticed the A/C not working. There were a couple of times where I was close to just keeping my room door open to allow the hall A/C to cool my room. No acceptable nonetheless. Definitely not something I'd expect from an Autograph Property. Hopefully others have a different experience and this isn't a norm.

The Algonquin Hotel is close to my heart due to its literary history. It was the home to the queen of snark Dorothy Parker, one of my favorite writers as well as The Algonquin Round Table which of course included Ms. Parker. The Algonquin was renovated a while back so I took a stroll through the lobby. Upon entering, you are in the main rooom which is livingroomesque. Couches, low music, and lacquered white shelves that line the wall with books and flowers on them. The guests were speaking in low tones and the food looked so delicious. The rooms look nice but the historical aspect of literary royalty is what seals the deal for me. If you hear any sarcasm, it could be Dorothy Parker.

The hotel overall is a classic, but the room is doing a little bit of care and upgrade. The lobby is nice, but the staff no matter who we talk to were just average. I don’t understand why they charge $45 a night for a hotel service charge, but then give it back to you to use in their bar dining room.

Cons: Restaurant:Don't bother with the food here. It's subpar quality at higher than normal prices. My continental breakfast ($28) was vegan coconut yogurt with fruit and a basket of pastries. The yogurt was alright but the pastries were beyond disappointing (gas station quality at best). They give you $45 credit to charge to the room per day. Spend it on the drinks (the Algonquin is delicious!) because the food and the food service there are very meh. The rooms are on the smaller side and a little stuffy. The room size is to be expected but I was kind of surprised by how stuffy the room was. No matter how high the air conditioning was turned up to, there was always humidity lingering in the air.p Pros: Location, location, location! The hotel is blocks away from Bryant Park (home of the New York Public Library) and Times Square but yet secluded enough to be pretty quiet for sleeping. Bathrooms were modern and very nice. Service at the desk and the door were excellent. They even provided a pack n play for my little one to sleep in!

Rooms are too old and of a 2 star quality. Bathroom and carpet are dirty and dusty. Towels and amenities are poor. Iron is broken. Shower door doesn’t close and leak water all over. AC is super loud. Alarm went on at 6am. Will never return.

The Algonquin was fine for a weekend stay, but I won’t be returning. The building is historic and charming, and the food and drinks at the hotel’s restaurant/bar were good. However, the front desk staff left a lot to be desired. I had two separate negative interactions with two different staff members; both were rude, short, and unwelcoming, even during a simple check-in. I’m typically very understanding, but the consistent lack of courtesy was disappointing. The rooms were fine, but the experience at the front desk really soured our stay.

Charming, historic hotel with tons of character just steps from Times Square. Loved the literary touches, the cozy Blue Bar, and the resident cat! Rooms are small but comfortable, and staff were welcoming and professional. A perfect spot if you want classic NYC vibes with a storied past. Tacos were amazing at the bar!

Had a great two nights at the Algonquin. The hotel is beautiful, quiet and stylish. I especially want to give a shout out to Jimmy for making us feel welcomed. We really enjoyed chatting with him throughout the days of our stay. All the staff are exceptionally kind and hospitable. I would love to come back! The only reason I didn’t give a full 5 star is because on our last night, some kind of gadget (maybe the AC unit?) was making a constant beeping sound that we couldn’t troubleshoot to turn off and it kept me up from about 4 am to 9 am.
Jul 17, 2025 -
From the moment we arrived at the front door, we were made to feel welcome and special. The doorman very politely took our bags and showed us in; the front desk staff were gracious, friendly and helpful. The hotel had recently re-opened after some significant work on the lobby decor, and unfortunately the bar and restaurant were not yet operating. We understood, and in this neighborhood there is no lack of other dining options. Our room was pretty small, but it was very comfortable and had plenty of space for a two-night visit to see shows. The water pressure in the shower was great, and no waiting for hot water! We loved our short stay, and will definitely be back - the new lobby looks great!
