What clients say about Hotel St. James in New York (NY)
-
Rooms were adaquete and clean. A touch noisy even for Times Square. Service at front desk and cleaning was great. Would stay here again for the price!

This hotel is an absolute gem! Great service, perfect rooms, and only a block and a half from times Square! 100 percent will be telling all my friends and family to stay here! I absolutely loved it!
Mar 03, 2026 -
Cute and quaint hotel around the corner from Times Square. Clean and pleasant rooms. Twighlight Zone vibes in a good way. Really enjoyed my stay. Check out the Irish Bar (Connolly’s) next door for great food and service as well.

We chose Hotel St. James because of the incredibly reasonable room rate, and location close to Radio City Music Hall, where we were seeing Jason Isbell in concert. The hotel is basic in the way of amenities, but it was very clean and our bed was very comfortable. The staff really came through for us when the blizzard hit and we had to change our travel plans multiple times. They extended our stay one night, and held the room for us for a second night without making us pay in advance in case we needed it. We ended up not needing the second night, but it was great to know we'd have a place to stay if it came to that. They also let us check out late since our plans had been in flux right up until the time we were supposed to check out. All around, a fantastic experience, and we would definitely recommend it to anyone who wants to stay near Broadway and Times Square and isn't looking for deluxe accommodations.

One of the worst customer service experiences I have ever had — zero courtesy from management. My recent trip to NYC was cancelled due to the severe snowstorm affecting the entire Northeast region. When I contacted the hotel to request a refund or even hotel credit, given the extraordinary weather circumstances that completely disrupted my travel plans, my request was denied. I understand policies are in place, but in situations involving extreme weather beyond a guest’s control, I would have expected at least some level of flexibility or empathy. Unfortunately, none was shown. Very disappointing experience.

I had a wonderful experience at Hotel St. James and am happy to give it 5 stars! Every aspect of my stay—from the rooms and service to the location—was consistent and met my expectations for a solid 3-star standard. It was a very dependable and pleasant stay overall.
Feb 17, 2026 -
Not luxury, but for the price this is one of the best hotels in NYC. Conveniently located, room was quiet and spacious by NYC standards, bed comfy, bathroom serviceable, helpful staff.
Feb 17, 2026 -
My family and I stayed here and really enjoyed the location and service from staff. Sebastian I believe is his name, the gentleman with the long nice hair was very nice and helpful. He even gave me a food recommendation! Thank you Sebastian, my family and I appreciated your hospitality.
Feb 12, 2026 -
We were in the best spot for Winter Storm Fern. We stayed warm. The staff educated us Floridians on what to expect. The location made it so we could still see great sights in the snow. You walk outside and to your right is Times Square!! It was central to everything we wanted to do. The bed was comfortable and our room stayed warm! Would absolutely stay here again!
Feb 03, 2026 -
Great deal for the price. The room was clean. There are a set of stairs to enter the historic hotel. Thankfully the elevators worked! The hotel rooms are heated by old fashioned radiators. You need to manually adjust them by the black nob on the lower left hand side. Call ahead with any accessibility requests ahead of time. Very simple hotel/definitely a home base for exploring times square but not necessarily a destination in of itself.
Feb 02, 2026 -
I really enjoyed staying here. It is not a luxury hotel, but it is wonderful for the price. The room was very clean, the bed was comfy and had 7 pillows. They brought me an extra soft blanket upon request. However, there is no central heating/thermostat. The room is heated by a radiator and there is an a/c unit in the window that isn't completely sealed so there can be a bit of a draft, however it is easily fixed by placing a towel over it and closing the blinds. Also, No microwave or refridgerafor in the room. Other than that, the staff are all so incredibly kind and helpful. This hotel truly is in the heart of Times Square. Minutes to almost every Broadway show you can think of! It is very safe with staff at the front desk 24/7. I really enjoyed my stay here and will most definitely book again when I come back!
Jan 26, 2026 -
We used this hotel for a mother/daughter trip and it worked well for our purposes. The location is perfect. Our view was odd: our windows looked out on another building's windows, which were very close to ours. It seemed to be a co-working space. We kept our curtains closed the entire time because the people in those windows could clearly see right into our room. If you can deal with that, I highly recommend this hotel.
Jan 20, 2026 -
The worst hotel experience I have ever had. Please stay away. The sleeping surfaces of the room were unclean, full of hair and yellow splotches on the sheets. The air smelled strongly of chemicals masking underlying odors. The staff was uncaring and unhelpful when this was brought to their attention. Not only can I not recommend this hotel, I can wholeheartedly recommend that you never stay here. Terrible experience.
Jan 11, 2026 -
The St. James Hotel has an absolutely perfect location — just a 1-minute walk from Times Square, which is hard to beat and made our stay very convenient. The room and washroom were generally clean, though the bathroom could use a bit more attention — we did notice an insect. The hotel is quite basic: no fridge, no microwave, and no water provided, and since the tap water isn’t drinkable, that’s something to plan for. We had some issues with the heater. A staff member had to come turn on the radiator, and once it was on, it became very hot and made noise throughout the night. The sink and shower faucets (mélangeur) also didn’t work properly and caused water to spill everywhere. Overall, the hotel could benefit from renovations, but if you’re looking for a simple place to sleep with an unbeatable location in the heart of Manhattan, it still does the job.
Jan 04, 2026 -
The good: perfect location and front desk is very helpful. They have a car service the use, for a fee, to take you to and from the airport. It was quick and easy! Pretty much everything is within walking distance. The rooms were clean. The bad: the pictures of the king room on their site ONLY display the superior king room. The standard king room is basically a dorm room. Window unit for AC, a radiator for heat. The beds were so hard I had to use the extra pillows under me to try and sleep. The walls are thin, so bring ear plugs.

We stayed at Hotel St. James in Mid December 2025 and were overall satisfied with our stay. If you are looking for a hotel close to Times Square at an affordable price this hotel could be for you. ||Positives: Right on Times Square. Our stay was hundreds of dollars less than other hotels in the area would have been. Multiple subway stations are located within a few blocks. Numerous eating establishments close by to include neighborhood delis, small and large restaurants and multiple fast food chains are located within a few blocks. Rooms were clean and housekeeping staff were very efficient. ||Negatives: The rooms are small and no frills. No coffee maker, refrigerator or microwave. No thermostat in the room to control temperature. We were lucky enough to have a room with a window (not all rooms have windows to the outside) that we could open to let in cooler air to help regulate the temperature. Our room was on the 2nd floor facing 45th street and the street noise was extremely noticeable. Lots of horn honking and sirens blaring at all times of the night. I will say by the 3rd night we were able to filter these sounds out and they became white noise for us. ||Since we used the room as a home base for sleeping during our stay, we were able to look past the negatives. However, if you are going to spend alot of time in the hotel, you probably won't enjoy your stay.

We stayed here from Dec 19th-21st and the location is AMAZING! NEAR ALL THE MAJOR SPOTS..The rooms were a little small and outdated but very clean and staff was great. Only thing I did not like was we got a two bed room and one of the beds was so uncomfortable. Could feel the springs on the bed. House keeping was great and friendly. Will stay here again.
Dec 21, 2025 -
Perfect location at a decent price, more affordable than most other hotels around the area. A short walk down the road from Times Square. The building itself is older and our view was of a neighboring building, but that didn't bother us. The only (minor) complaint I have is that the sound of the AC/heating unit made it a little bit harder getting to sleep (I'm generally more sensitive to noise than most, so take that into consideration.)
Dec 09, 2025 -
Excellent location, small quaint, cozy boutique hotel where desk people know your name. Very comfortable bed and pillow. No chaos! Will stay again. Coffee shop across street, restaurants next door and across street. Very convent to theatre, Bryan’s park 6 th and 5 th Ave. excellent value for small hotel
Dec 04, 2025 -
The location of this hotel cannot be beat! Was about a 6 minute walk to Times Square, so close to any subways and a walk away from many other landmarks. This was also such great value. The staff were very helpful and friendly and we were able to leave our bags in the hotel before check in and after check out which was super convenient. Our biggest issue was in the room, the radiators were extremely loud and constantly leaking gas, which made a loud noise and a high pitched squeaking. We did ask for assistance with this, and nothing was really resolved so we had to stay in that room with the really loud radiator. Our room was also really on the small side, with just enough room for the bed and some walking space, which didn’t matter too much as we didn’t spend too much time in there.

I want to give a special shoutout to Sebastian who went above and beyond. He explained the best options for getting to the airport and just was very supportive of my concerns. He truly exemplifies the kindness we had hoped for in our first trip to NYC. Honestly, the other front desk staff have all been very helpful and kind as well. Thank you for a great stay, God bless you all

We stayed at Hotel St. James in New York and had a great experience. It’s definitely an older building, and the rooms are on the smaller side, but honestly, we were hardly in the room because the location is amazing, close to everything we wanted to do! There’s no fridge or water in the rooms, but that wasn’t an issue at all since there are so many stores nearby to grab whatever you need. The hotel offers a microwave and ice buckets in the lobby, which was really convenient. A huge shoutout to Joey, who was absolutely amazing—so helpful, friendly, and welcoming. The rest of the staff was also very kind and informative, especially when we needed to store our luggage. The bathrooms were surprisingly a normal, comfortable size, and had elevators which was a plus in NYC. Overall, this hotel is simple but clean, incredibly convenient, and made our stay in New York so easy. Would definitely stay again!
Nov 18, 2025 -
The price and location you cannot beat! It was very well situated and had the best deli next door with a ton of options and the nicest cook and the grill. The rooms were spacious and cleaned very well! The hotel is old, but has a charm to it. The front desk was super accommodating and extremely friendly. They had great recommendations and were always attentive. Great lobby to sit and chill before check in or after. This was a great hotel for anyone coming up for a few shows and wanting to save a little on hotels!

Honestly not sure why this is ranked as a 2-star hotel. Sure the decor's a little dated but rooms are huge by NY standards and quite clean/comfy. Private bathrooms with hot water, including shower gel, shampoo, and handsoap. Soundproofing in the hallways is not great so you can sometimes hear doors slam or people chatting, but you can also hear that in 4-star hotels too. No minifridge or water but that was not a dealbreaker for me when I was basically only in the room to sleep. Amazing library space downstairs and friendly front desk staff. Amazing location!! So close to everything! Would stay here again! Should be 3.5 star at least imo.
Nov 13, 2025 -
4 night stay here with my friend, absolutely ideal location close to everything including subway and short walk from the coach USA bus stop for airport transfer! Rooms were simple but had everything we needed (towels, hairdryer, body washes etc) which was fine for our needs. Very clean. The staff were so welcoming and friendly. There is a great store where you can get snacks and breakfast etc. Would definitely come back to this hotel! Thanks so much.
Nov 02, 2025 -
The hotel was great, we had a wonderful experience that was well worth the price. We were impressed with the location, this is just a min walk from Times Square. Special mention to Joey, who was at the front desk, he was very friendly, attentive and welcoming. Overall, we had a very pleasant and comfortable stay. Strongly recommend.

Rooms are small but highly functional and most importantly clean!!!! The location is a half block from times square. There is a great “cook” deli next door for any food or drinks you can think of. So even though a refrigerator, water or coffee machine are not available, Cook next door is always open. Did I mention Statbucks is right across the street! Check in and checkout was smooooooth. They have a free place to stow luggage before and after checkout. I will book this hotel again next year.

As others have mentioned, unlike 90% of NYC hotels or Airbnb's, these rooms are unusually large for Manhattan. They are also larger than most NYC studio apartments given space is typically at a premium. Given its central location near Time Square, Subway station, Train station, shops, and restaurants, would say it's a perfect spot for a business traveler or tourist. Since there is no gym, pool, coffee maker, fridge, etc or any other amenities there is zero hotel resort fees or pre-authorization charge on your credit card. Each room has it own window air conditioning unit. There are no room heaters though as its an older building so there is just the central radiator which won't activate unless temps drop below 50F. You can request extra blankets from the front desk which helps greatly. You have your own private bathroom and shower. Wifi is easy to join and is decently fast. The staff are 5 stars as they are very friendly and helpful.

Stayed here for four nights last month as part of the start of our month trip to the USA. Location is excellent, two minute walk to Times Square and loads of other top tourist spots (Empire State Building, Central Park, Rockefeller Centre etc) are easily walkable from here also. Room was great and had two comfortable beds, great hot water shower and was very clean. There is no fridge, microwave, tea/coffee making facilities and no bottled water etc provided but nothing is far away. View was an alleyway but we never heard sirens, street noise etc so slept great. Excellent value for money given that’s its NYC but also its location within the city. All staff were friendly and helpful. ? % recommend staying here

What I love above this hotel is that it is in a perfect location, a few blocks to almost every attraction in NYC, thus saving time and money on transportation. When I stayed there for only 2 nights I was able to maximize my time and was able to visit the top attractions in the area. Aside from its perfect location, Starbucks in across the street, there is Cook and Eatery beside the hotel in case you want to grab quick bites, and Broadway Musuem is next to it. If you love Broadway shows, you are only within less than 5 mins walk even! All for a very good deal price point. The room I booked was a superior King. It has the basic amenities I was looking for in a room. If I get to travel to NYC again, I will stay at this hotel.
