What clients say about Gizmo Notion Corp. in New York (NY)

I was a customer here for 8 years before I moved across town. I have found the patience and kindness of the service to be something from another time, in the best possible way. Hossein is gracious, knowledgeable and honest. He came to my home and fixed my industrial machine. I have not the occasion to meet his wife, but judging from the comments here, they are wonderful people. Shop locally!!

Sewing is the best craft because you can help everyone look better. Plus, it's almost free, great prices here on all machines, repairs, notions, etc. Quality products, great folks. Highly recommend.

Gizmo is a treasure. The owners are super-helpful and this is the place I’ve bought buttons, snaps, Velcro, ribbons, trimmings and much more. Highly recommend a visit to buy or just scout out for future reference.

Great place. Great staff. Very nice and helpful. We need to buy from these places so they dont disappear.

I took my sewing machine here to be repaired! It took them around a week to fix the machine, the way it works is you pay a deposit ($35 in my case) for their analysis of the machine, and if they can’t fix it (unlikely, it seems) that’s all you have to pay, but if they can, you pay the rest ($57 including taxes in my case) for the repair. These folks seriously know sewing machines. The repair wasn’t cheap, but it was much cheaper than a new machine, I supported a local shop, I repaired instead of replacing which is better for the environment and my moral compass, and I found a sweet store to buy notions and things from. Also they answered all my questions and left the machine in better shape than I’ve ever had it!

What a lovely place! This kind of business is why I love NYC. Gizmo is a tiny little shop filled with all manner of odds and ends for all your sewing needs. But the most important part is that the owners are sitting right there ready to guide you! Sure, you could buy this stuff online from a faceless mega-corporation, but why would you want to when you can support a wonderful longtime neighborhood business? It's also super conveniently located just blocks from the L train.

I'm so grateful for their hospitality and resourcefulness. I came in for some pattern paper and it was like they felt bad that they didn't have it. It was very sweet and genuine. They even gave me a tip on how to substitute for the paper. I'm happy this place is in my community

A great place to get my sewing machine serviced! Dropped it off on Tuesday with no idea what was wrong with it, picked it up on Thursday. Not only for a reasonable price, but they patiently taught me some new things about my machine to help me in the future. The shop is small but packs a lot in, it has an especially good selection of unique buttons and trimmings. The couple who runs the store are wonderful and kind, I’ll be back!

I can’t recommend Gizmo enough!! I recently got back into sewing after learning from my mom when I was a kid, and Hussain was so kind and thoughtful in helping me pick out an appropriate machine for my level. He even hopped on FaceTime to help me troubleshoot when I was using the machine at home! Ten stars for the friendliest shop in town, and an extra star for the sweetest shop mascot :)

Excellent service! They repaired my sewing machine in under 15 minutes and were incredibly kind, knowledgeable, and helpful throughout the process. I will certainly be returning in the future.

I can’t say enough good things about gizmo! I have been shopping there since 2017 before they moved to the new location on 14th st. and for all those years, he and his wife Rosa have demonstrated a level of care and service that exceeds all expectations. They are so kind, informative, patient, friendly, generous, they listen to your questions and try to provide as much help as they can, and show a genuine interest in the work of their clients. I never feel belittled or spoken down to here. In the middle of a pretty big commission, my sewing machine just clunked out after many years of hard work. I took it to gizmo on a Wednesday, and by Friday morning they called me and said it was ready for pick up. When I came to fetch it-it’s almost unrecognizable. She sews so smoothly, so much more quietly than before, they did a complete restoration and cleaning-even cleaning my presser foot. I am so appreciative and feel lucky that our city has such an amazing resource for sewing and machine requirements. They are the real deal, and any time I need help I know I can count on them. 100% recommend to anyone regardless of experience level!!

This is a wonderful little sewing shop, cocked full of notions and supplies! I needed a 3inch zipper and there was a drawer full of them - hurray! Offers sewing machine repairs and looks like there are some used machines to purchase. 🩷

I am grateful for Hossein and Rosa for helping me repair my vintage Singer Featherweight machine. This machine was passed own from my friend's grandmother. Hossein cleaned it and got it working again! They are so nice and helpful. I would recommend anyone who needs work done on their vintage machine to come here.

If you have a broken sewing machine you must see Hussein! If you need a sewing machine that works (and isn’t a piece of junk like these new machines) come buy a used one here.
Jun 13, 2025 -
My experience is that Gizmo saves me traveling to 39th Street or west somewhere to the garment Industry. They have a little bit of anything you might need if you sew or design.
Jun 03, 2025 -
This place is a gem!! Fueled by love and passion, the lovely owners sold me and walked me through my new vintage machine! I truly love this spot and will definitely be going back!

Rosa & Hussain are absolutely fantastic individuals, truly an extraordinary pair. The customer service and overall experience at their shop are top-notch. Gizmo has such a wonderful atmosphere, and Rosa is incredibly helpful in assisting you with whatever you may need. I am eagerly looking forward to visiting again soon.

They are incredible!! So kind and thoughtful. I bought some fabric so I could make hats and there were so many gorgeous fabrics to choose from. Their suggestions were super helpful and everything was reasonably priced. I can’t recommend enough!!!

They’re open at the new location on 14th as of Oct 2024! They were pushed out of their old lease of 30 years. Great selection of sewing motions and really wonderful people running the shop. They’re very knowledgeable. Go support this local business!

I am so happy that this neighborhood gem is back, Hossain and his wife are incredibly helpful. They have a wide selection of buttons, trims, sewing notions and tools, sewing machines (vintage and modern) Hossain is an expert and he can skillfully repair any machine. A few years ago I purchased a beautiful vintage singer from him which he brought back to life; it is from the 1940s yet somehow runs like it is brand new. Their new space is absolutely beautiful, filled with light and well organized; I find it inspiring walking in and exploring their wide selection. I always find something exciting, they are also very reasonably priced and you can find a lot of high quality vintage stuff. Both of my parents were customers here before myself, I’m so happy that they have reopened visit them at 626 e 14th street!!!!

When I walked in, Hossein was delivering a repaired sewing machine to a young lady who was clearly a longtime customer. I immediately noticed his personable and sweet demeanor. I loved the cluttered, old-school vibe - I'll take that any day over the far too glossy trim shops in what is left of the garment district. I was entranced by the grab bag buttons, but I didn't want to dump out too many on the counter, so settled for a few gems. Old buttons can be exquisite little works of art and that is my intention for these since I suck at sewing - using them in jewelry and collages.

hossein is the best! he specializes in sewing machines, but he was able to fix the needle threader on my embroidery machine for a reasonable price. it did take a couple of weeks, but that was out of his control as there was some back and forth with his Brother machine specialist and it took a while to receive the replacement part we needed. in general, it seems like there are long shipping times for parts these days. i would trust my machine with hossein any day!

i love Gizmo! sewing machine repair shop! service your machine so it doesnt break! this 20 yr old singer machine fell apart during the pandemic. I was working on corsets and masks and the side handle just broke off - i was so wonderfully happy that Gizmo had survived the pandemic and was more than happy to give him my business! i paid $100 to fix the wheel - and service the machine. it works beautifully now! so happy! i considered just getting a new machine - but they dont make them to last anymore. this is a rare singer made in Italy! (bought at woolworth on 23rd st for $100 in 1996). THANK YOU SO MUCH GIZMO FOR SALVAGING MY MACHINE! IT WORKS WONDERFULLY!

I’m really sorry and extremely upset to write a negative review for a small business. Small businesses have such hard time. But this guy from GIZMO returned my sewing machine in the same condition that it was before, still with a scotch tape over a broken part and said that he fixed something inside and this tape is OK and it’s not necessary to fix or replace it. At home, as soon the tape got loose, the machine stopped. So, now I’m with the same problem and out of my money. When the next day I asked him what he fixed inside I did not get a clear answer. He said if I want to replace a broken part than I have to pay more. It may seem like a manipulation to make me to pay more. I do not know who gave him these good reviews. May be he can fix some small problems. Also he is good in pretending to look “nice” and ‘honest”. I do not know why I paid him and took a machine with a scotch tape. For some reason I trusted him that it can work. I was wrong. Of course, I have to blame myself too. When I brought a machine to his shop he did not give me an estimate, said that he won’t fix but replace a broken hand wheel and quickly took the machine to the back of the shop. It happen very fast. He did not give me a receipt but said do not worry he will call soon. I waited for his call for like three weeks and then called him. It took like five weeks to get my machine back. Now I see that I had to insist on a receipt and estimate. But, again, he really learned how to pretend to look “honest” and “nice”. When you carry a heavy machine for like twenty blocks you already invested in it too much and cannot just take it back. So if you cannot find another shop, make sure to ask him for a price estimate and receipt with what he is exactly going to do. It’s a big lesson for me don’t trust people like this. I paid for this lesson and now am looking for another shop to fix my sewing machine.

THE BEST!! It's a true gem hole in the wall shop in East Village. I don't know where I would be without this shop in this location! Sometimes it's a pain to always go up to the garment district to buy trims or some supplies for my sewing machine so coming here is a real treat. It's like a treasure to find trimming that are vintage and are nicely organized. If you love lace, it's an amazing place to shop for yardages of lace. One of the greatest part about spending time here is getting to know the owner, Hossein. He is so sweet! He really knows how to warm up a customer and understand what the customer needs. I can tell he has had this business for many years. His joy for being on 1st ave makes me understand why he is successful for his shop. If you are in need of a sewing machine, he has been always bugging me to buy one off of him but never have! Wish to know if anyone has and how it has been. I hope his business never changes! A must visit if you're in the East Village!

What a nice guy. He Showed me how I was using my sewing machine wrong and why it kept jamming. His price was so affordable so I didn't need to buy a new sewing machine and now I know how to really use mine and he gave me some pointers and he was just super nice. Very simple Not a solid supply of material but a good mix and match. It’s kinda a get what ya see kinda spot.

I am so so happy and relieved to have found this store! The owner was so kind and patient with my frantic energy. He knew everything there is to know about my 100 year old singer machine and was able to replace it's broken part on the spot! I will be bringing my other antique machines to him too! :)

Walked in and was helped right away. The owner was extremely knowledgeable about my machine even from a picture and he had exactly what I needed repaired. It was worth the $25 spent for a 10 minutes of work. Will be returning in the future for any work needed on my antique machines.
