What clients say about Mood Fabrics in New York (NY)
-
On Thirty-Seventh Street, three flights above The sidewalk chaos of the Garment District, There lies a place that sewers fall in love With instantly—the selection is unrestricted. It's Mood. You've seen it on the television screen, Where Tim Gunn sent designers in a dash To grab their bolts of charmeuse, silk, and sheen And sprint back to the workroom with their stash. "Go to Mood!" he'd say, and off they'd fly Through aisles of organza, tweed, and lace, With thirty minutes left and tears to cry And chiffon draped across a panicked face. But you, dear shopper, you can take your time. You'll wander floors of fabric, wall to wall— Italian wools that cost a paradigm, And Liberty of London prints for fall. The leathers hang like pelts inside a cave. The velvets beg you, touch me, go ahead. The African wax prints are bold and brave, The Japanese denims, indigo and red. A woman in the corner holds a swatch Against her cheek and whispers to her friend, "I drove from Philadelphia just to watch This dupioni catch the light. I'll never mend." The staff know every selvage, every weave, They'll tell you what will drape and what will not, Which interfacing works, how to achieve A bias cut from what you've already got. "You want to make a blazer out of this? You'll need a lining, darling. Something slick. Come here—this cupro. Feel it. That's the kiss. Two yards will do it. Maybe three to pick." And Swatch the cat! That legendary beast, A bulldog, actually—forgive the name— Who roamed the aisles, the greatest and the least Celebrity that Mood could ever claim. You came for half a yard of cotton twill. You're leaving with a bolt of silk brocade, Six zippers, and a catastrophic bill, But oh—the coat you'll make will be handmade. Five stars. Where Project Runway dreams are born, And every bolt of cloth becomes a song, Where scissors wait and measuring tapes adorn The hands of those who've sewn their whole lives long.

Who ever drives your delivery truck license plate 74788 mh it's really gonna be a problem for you in the future the gentleman driving that vehicle cut me off with a big van in the middle of a busy highway. Almost crashed into me and then stuck his middle finger out as if I made a mistake on a busy highway. You should address it.

Omg-I was honestly in heaven here!! Ever since I first saw this particular fabric store on project runway I’ve always wanted to go and grace their I aisles !! I can’t believe it’s literally three floors and row after row of fabric on every type of role there could be possible, trim, glitter, tool, leather, and vegan leather! Then don’t even get me started on all the thread, buttons, and home decor! It’s enough to make your head spin!! Everything is incredibly organized by section, textures and style of patterns or solids! I was thoroughly impressed and yet so overwhelmed. I spent 45 minutes, just looking at every fabric and touching everything in sight that I couldn’t buy a single yard of anything!! There’s a cutting station in a couple of different spot spots as well as stairs and an elevator in case you need to maneuver around, but goodness! I could live here and never get tired!! Now that I think about it, I never looked at the prices but one of the fabrics was $24 a yard. It was a soft jersey fabric, so I’m sure it was more expensive. I should’ve looked up more prices, but honestly, I was just so overwhelmed, and I wanted to walk through each aisle away! There were a number of employees on each floor, helping other people and restocking other fabrics. I didn’t want to bother with asking any questions because I was so enchanted with the fabric store itself! I’m so happy to have graced mood fabrics presence in New York, especially since all the fabrics have gone out of business over here on the West Coast in California! I honestly cannot wait to go back and actually buy some fabric! Lol I will definitely be working on some sketches for a dress or something so I can go in to mood fabrics with a game plan besides being overwhelmed by everything! lol

I’ve been sourcing a large amount of fabric for a project and I ended up finding everything I needed at Mood at reasonable prices. Amanda and Claudia went out of their way, above and beyond, to help me track down what I was looking for. The employee I spoke to on the phone and the employee at the register were also very friendly and helpful. I’m not an expert in fabrics, but Mood seems to have a wide range of quality fabrics and other garment/sewing/upholstery materials. Giving five stars for the friendly, knowledgeable, and proactive customer service.

First time in here. As soon as I walked in I was stopped and told to check my bag because it was "big." I thought of course no problem. I took out my phone and my fabric I walked with to color match. After walking around for five minutes I saw SEVERAL people with bags the same size and larger than mine. You can take a guess at what color I am and what color they were. I promptly picked up my bag and left.

Outstanding selection of fabric and supplies. Customer service was good as well. Will return and I highly recommend!

If I could give 2.5 I would. I shop online here endlessly but my in store experience was.... off-putting. The one staff member that "helped me" was so rude that I decided to put back everything I was going to have cut. I found several rolls of fabric with multiple different prices, some that are DRASTICALLY different from one another. One that said $18yrd in big black letters but evidently is was not 18 a yard it was 600 as noted on the tag that was shoved in the tube. Here I was thinking that was the cost of the entire roll. Feels like you should probably cover up the old price if you're reusing tubes...and maybe tell employees not to roll their eyes when asked which is the correct price. All she had to do was tell me that the paper tags are the current fabrics price. Needless to say this was the only fabric shop in town that I wouldn't go back to the physical store.

I just went into Mood Fabrics in Houston. They were getting ready to open. The internet had told me they were open. The store was busy with all the workers getting ready for opening. The selection was stellar. I loved it. The staff couldn't have been nicer even though they were technically not open yet. They still sold me my fabric. I was the 1st customer for the Houston store. Pricing was fair, selection was great, people were helpful and kind. I live in suburbs and this is a trek, but it is soooo worth it! Mary Metcalfe

Purchased several sets of buttons from Mood Fabrics and had them shipped to me. The buttons are beautiful and unique. My blazer/skirt (gold metal woven buttons) and cashmere cardigan (Italian rhinestone buttons in peach) look fabulous.

The tall guy who works in the leather dept tells me this is how my fabric is supposed to be cut . Now is this true ? Never got fabric cut like this before . Store wasnt useful at all hard to find staff to help . Online says certain fabrics are available but when you go to the store , its “out of stock”

Only good things to say about mood. The fabric selection is incredible. The staff is kind and have great vibes and are super helpful. The customers are all friendly and happy to be there.
Oct 23, 2025 -
The employees were rude and unhelpful. 2 just stood around and talked. I waited for a few minutes then asked for help and he just pointed me in the direction even after I asked about specific items. I was definitely a bother. The second person I asked for help just as dismissive. I went next door to the S&S store and the person was super helpful. Granted they don't have the inventory that mood has. But at least they provide good customer service.

Ordered 2-5 day shipping online Mon Sep 29 it is now Oct 3 and they’ve just now sent off my package through DHL which then has to be dropped off to USPS. I’m a fashion student and literally have a project due in 2 weeks. Hoping it gets here by tomorrow if I don’t receive it by the 5th day I won’t be changing my review. If I paid for fast shipping that’s what I expect.

I paid $62 ($50 plus shipping) for the Mood Designer Fabrics mystery box so that you don’t have to! ??? Don’t fall for it. Anyone need 5 yards of green felt or some yellow sheer fabric that used to be white from Seacaucus NJ? Meta also wouldn’t let me tag Mood for this review because Mood paid for targeted advertising on their platforms. The store might be fine but don’t fall for the mystery box! #mood #mysterybox #moodfabrics

Okay honestly I do appreciate the wide variety but recently I feel like each bolt is so expensive per yard compared to the neighboring stores for the simplest of fabrics, and it’s not like the service is spectacular either. The floor workers are spread a bit thin so I found it hard to flag down someone available to help on multiple visits, or some employees are not paying attention to you at all and refuse to look at you. It was kind of baffling

Oh,my !! I do love shopping for fabric here ! I know they sell the little accessories we use, but I am strictly fabric! I have bought hundreds of yards from here over the years. Like many irked, I have my own stash going on ? I've never had an issue with getting a shipment nor the fabrics themselves. Shopping online is tough for a lot, I know, but it really does open up some doors !! With Joanns now gone, browse about Mood and see what you can find for your new favorite go-to ! They also have great sale selections !! Watching Project Runway I thought Mid was really out of my budget. They have fabrics of all price points. You want to go cheap or to something super elegant, they have it !! I most highly recommend!

This store has a very wide selection of fabrics, as well as leather and some accessories. My experience here was positive, and I did not think the fabrics were expensive, nor did I find the salespeople unhelpful. On the contrary, I found some fine duchesse silk that cost *one third* the price being charged at B&J Fabrics for very similar silk. And the salesperson helping at Mood me went above and beyond to help me -- she was super nice and accommodating. Based on the other reviews, some people haven't checked around and compared prices at other shops. What they think is expensive may actually be reasonable, if not cheap. And they don't seem to realize that salespeople are individuals whose abilities and moods (pun intended) vary widely. In fact, if there was anything I didn't like it was the obnoxious behavior of some of the other customers during my visit. Mood isn't perfect, but it's a good option and I appreciate what it offers. I'll be back!

It was such a huge dream to visit Mood, and my experience could not have been better! Amazing selection of fabrics and trimmings. Mood has everything I could have wanted and more!

Weird entrance system, beautiful fabrics, but slightly annoying that the in-person store offers much more than the online store. Also the male cashier I had was just awful. Rude and haphazard with my $1000 of delicate fabric (beading and lace) such that flinging beads bounced around on the counter. There are such stunning, intricate, expensive fabrics available in-person that cannot be accessed online. I recommend calling the in-person store and asking for help when it comes to intricate out-of-state fabric needs. Their most expensive fabric is around $800/yard. The least expensive one I saw was around $15/yard. Quite a variety of materials and quality!

the fabric store is truly impressive — it’s like a paradise for designers! And the idea with the wall installation, where the dresses are painted and decorated with real fabrics, is very creative. It’s especially cool that in the first image, you can see how the embroidered fabric from the third photo was used to create the 3D floral elements on one of the dresses on the wall. This combination of painted art and actual textiles creates the effect of “living” fashion illustrations. Each dress on the wall seems to showcase the possibilities of different types of fabrics found on the store shelves — from floral embroidery to marbled patterns and glossy red textures.

Very disappointing. It’s over hyped from project runway. The atmosphere isn’t very welcoming and it’s hard to find fabric that isn’t of the higher priced range in the store.

This place has an overwhelming selection of fabrics and trimmings but there are so many nice and helpful people working here that despite the overwhelm, my 19 year old was able to find and get just what they were looking for. I am sure they will be dreaming about this place for a while.

Mood was definitely a mood. I felt a bit like a fish out of water amongst all the designers bustling about, picking out fabric for their next creation. while I'm trying to figure out where the tweed is and what tulle is. (just kidding. I know what tulle is. what kind of gay do you take me for?) but the staff was incredibly helpful as were the designers who had been there so often that the staff knew them by name. it was a wonderful sense of community there amongst all the silk. it was amazing to be a part of it, even if only temporarily. in the end, I found what I was looking for.

Mood is an iconic shop in the Garment District, selling retail designer fabrics and notions. No other Midtown fabric stores quite compare. As a fashion design student, I would travel to NYC from Virginia and buy retired designer fabrics to bring back for my projects. As a professional working in the Garment District, I sourced many fabrics and trims through Mood. Consistent customer service, and great quality.

I have just wasted my time, ordering two separate pieces (2 yards each) of material that is completely unusable. I contacted the company about 1: replacing the material with out the flaws or 2: refund my purchase price and I return the material to them. My first choice would have been #1 as I absolutely love the material. Their offer back was to send me 1 yard because I had washed and dried the material already. I followed their fabric care instructions before laying it out to cut when I noticed random pulled threads throughout both pieces. This was a hard lesson learned that they do NOT stand by the fabric they sell. Never will I order from them again. And I will not be blackmailed into removing this and will warn everyone I know who sews about their lack of customer service or guarantee of their product. Just in case anyone is interested in doing business with them, this is the response I got because they were refusing to deal with me and I threatened to write a review: Hello Sharon, I had sent an email to the owner and was waiting for a response for a full approval for a refund. I have to follow the chain of command to be able to get the solution you desired. I do see though that you wrote a review already. If they see the review they will not approve it. Please withdraw the review. Once the review has been taken off, I will go over to the owner personally and explain the situation to get the result we desire. Update: I just added photos showing some of the flaws in this fabric and then checked the website reviews. This is the same flaw they knew about back in 2021. Shame on them!

So far so good. I have purchased on line from Mood several times for rib knit trim. Very good quality. I just need more colored stripes because I am in the "mood" to make bomber jackets. The black and white strip was perfect for my patchwork remnants jacket. The solid red was for my print/recycled denim jacket. Just ordered more. Thanks Mood ❤️

Love to shop at Mood NY. They have it all in this store! I have a sewing school in NC and take photos and swatches for my students to shop from. One stop shopping as they have high end couture designer fabrics to simple cottons. Joshua really made this visit special by showing us the new circle panels that make sewing a designer gown easy easy! I love the black section, so many different variety's of fabric types. I made one of my simple A-line skirts with a yoke from a flocked design on organza. Only needed a yard! Then made it fun by making different colored lining skirts to mix and match to give my classic black different looks. Looking back at my photos there is one fabric, I wish I had bought :( But thankful they have a great online service.

Finally got to visit the famous Mood fabrics store after watching most seasons of Project Runway. Impressive 3floors of abundant choice in fabrics and accessories. Service was fast and products were not That overpriced (for NYC). Giving it a 4stars only because of the lower level, almost completely dedicated to real leather (!?). The smell was just sickeningly bad. Was really disappointed in the lack of care of animal cruelty and 21st century standards.

I finally made it to the infamous Mood Fabrics! After watching the first episode of Project Runway I’ve wanted to visit & never got a chance until the other day. It was a Saturday to be exact, I made the mistake(like a couple other folks before me)of walking into Mood Home store front, thankfully the sweet store associate directed me next door. They should consider putting the sign that instructs to go next door for fashion Mood at the top of the door instead of the bottom of the door. After riding up the elevator & the doors opening I was in immediate awe, the fashion art on the walls & doors were a delight! Unfortunately I didn’t have all the time I wanted(was picking up a piece of fabric for my Mom)and I liked that each aisle had the specific type of fabric on hanging signs. Not sure if the day I went was the reason for the amount of people in the store, but I quickly learned that getting assistance could be a slight hassle. But only if you’re impatient or in a rush, besides that I received help throughout my whole visit. Every single store associate was courteous, strong, helpful and extremely nice. The aisles are small & tight, so I wouldn’t recommend coming in there with a ton of bags or luggage, especially because they have stairs to get to the other floors. I also like that you can ask for swatches of any fabric, not sure how normal that is but I can’t wait to go back!
