What clients say about Mountain House East Village in New York (NY)
-
I’ve been wanting to try Mountain House in the East Village for a long time since it’s often mentioned as one of the best Chinese restaurants in NYC. While the food was good and the portions were very generous, none of the dishes we tried stood out as significantly better than other Szechuan restaurants I’ve had in the city. That said, the portion sizes are great for sharing, especially if you go with a group, and the staff was very kind and accommodating. The menu is also extensive and has a lot of interesting options. The atmosphere was honestly the most underwhelming part for me. Online photos make the space look quaint but spacious, but in reality it’s quite small and can feel cramped. Luckily we sat in a booth, but I imagine the middle tables might feel a bit chaotic when it’s busy. Overall, I still really enjoyed dining here and would definitely come back to try more dishes.

Had an incredible dinner at Sichuan Mountain House! We started with the cold noodles, which were the perfect refreshing kick-off to the meal. The highlights were definitely the Mala Prawns (loved the fun gloves they provided to keep things clean!) and the Mapo Tofu, which had the perfect balance of spice and numbness. We also ordered the eggplant and green beans, which were cooked to perfection. A huge shoutout to our server, Emma. She was amazing. super friendly and gave us some fantastic recommendations that really made our night. We’ll definitely be back!

Absolutely one of my favorite restaurants in the city! I’ve been here countless times & it’s family approved. The food is always consistent, and great service (shout out Emma!). Favorite dishes include the: clay pot beef, laji chicken, sweet & sour pork and the eggplant.

There’s a reason this restaurant has landed on the New York Times best restaurants list multiple years in a row - and it’s not just hype. Mountain House is definitely an experience for spice lovers, as everything is very warm to knock your socks off. We ordered a spicy rabbit stir fry and their staple chicken sichuan. The rich, authentic flavors are undeniable. Every bite made us smile and the decor, even just for a moment, makes you forget you’re in an overly crowded, buzzing corner of Manhattan. The service was extremely thoughtful and never overbearing. Reservations are AN ABSOLUTE MUST. See you soon Mountain House.

Mountain House is one of those places I wish I had tried sooner. The food here is outstanding, with bold flavors and the perfect level of spice in every dish we tried. Each plate was deeply seasoned and full of character without being overwhelming. The proteins were especially impressive, from the tender fish to the flavorful beef and perfectly cooked chicken. Everything tasted high quality and thoughtfully prepared. The menu offers a wide range of options, so there is something for every preference. You can really fill up here and leave feeling like you had some truly excellent Chinese food. I would absolutely come back again.

Probably one of the best and most authentic Chinese restaurants I’ve been to in New York. Came here for dinner with my wife and a friend, and we ordered four entrees. The dishes were big, perfect for sharing, and the flavors were absolutely incredible. The place was almost full, yet we arrived without a reservation and they still found us a table. The team was professional and fast once seated, the waiter poured us tea and left the pot on the table, which felt very thoughtful. The restaurant itself is authentic and stylish, and even the small details stood out like the mouthwash station in the restroom, which was a surprisingly nice touch. Highly recommended, I’ll definitely be back.

Had a really nice meal at Mountain House. The Sichuan dishes were flavorful without being overwhelming, and everything came out fresh and well prepared. Service was smooth and friendly — Zhiyoung was attentive and gave helpful menu suggestions. Solid spot for good food and a comfortable atmosphere. Would come back.
Feb 03, 2026 -
Food is well-seasoned and properly spicy. Portions are decent, prices are reasonable for Manhattan. Staff Zhiyong‘s service is efficient. Overall a reliable option for Sichuan food.
Feb 03, 2026 -
The food was good. The swing pork belly was kinda tasteless even after dipping it into the sauce. Wouldn’t recommend that unless it’s just for photos. Everything else tasted great. Service was exceptional and spot on

Great restaurant with large portions! We visited on a Thursday evening and waited about 15 minutes for a table. One quick heads-up: the food here is authentically spicy, so definitely be prepared for that Sichuan heat! We ordered a few different dishes to share. I personally didn't love the cold chicken, as it was a bit too sour for my taste. The Sichuan chicken, on the other hand, was easily my favorite! We also really enjoyed the peppercorn beef and the steamed fish. While the flavors were great, the fish was almost too spicy at times—even for someone used to some heat. Overall, the portion sizes are very generous, which I really appreciated. It's a great spot as long as you can handle the spice!

As tempting as it is, the swing pork belly appetizer is not worth it! It’s just bland steamed/boiled room temperature strips of non flavorful pork belly you can dip into this oil lard concoction that doesn’t taste that amazing at all. I ate two pieces and left the rest to my partner- who also wasn’t impressed. In fact, it tasted better dipped into the dumplings chili oil broth- which I would 10000% recommend! The pork and shrimp dumplings in chili oil were incredible- best I’ve had in NYC. It comes with a great broth to enjoy. Loved them so much I couldn’t get a pic till the end. The kung pao was a miss- wayyyy too sweet. And the yibin style ran noodles not very flavorful and cold, which I didn’t enjoy. We also got the twice cooked pork belly which was good. The service was phenomenal which is why I give three stars. Although there’s been quite some hype about this place for a while, I’ve had much better Szechuan cuisine in other restaurants in nyc. So I was not impressed. Except for the dumplings in chili oil. Would definitely recommend those.

Tbh, I loved this spot. Food was ? bold, real Sichuan flavors, super fragrant and spicy in the best way. Everything came out FAST, which I appreciate when I’m starving lol. The vibe is cozy but elevated, not chaotic, and low-key the feng shui feels really good, warm, balanced, just comfy to sit and eat for a while. Service was friendly and on point without being overbearing. Def a place I’d come back to (and bring friends). Solid food, good energy, no complaints. ?️✨

We had a great dining experience at Mountain House in Flushing. We ordered the frog dish, Kung Pao chicken, and the beef bao — everything was delicious, full of authentic flavor, and cooked perfectly. The spice level was spot on and the portions were satisfying. Special shout-out to our server Xiao Yu — he was attentive, friendly, and made sure we were comfortable throughout the meal. His service really elevated the whole experience. Amazing food, great service, and a place we’ll definitely come back to. Highly recommended!

Authentic Chinese cuisine near NYU with solid, satisfying flavors. The food is good and feels true to traditional cooking. Desserts are average and not the highlight, but the savory dishes make up for it. Special shoutout to Pan—the service was warm, attentive, and made the experience even better. Overall, a great spot for good Chinese food and friendly service in the NYU area.

Szechuan food done accurate at not too bad of a pricing. The interior is designed very nicely. Wait was a bit long so do get a reservation. They gave out gifts for openning anniversary which was very generous. I thought the table next door bought it until we got one too.
Dec 22, 2025 -
My boyfriend took me and my kid there. As a vegetarian, I found that many dishes contained meat. I ordered sizzling tofu and spinach, which felt like a healthy choice. He had mapo beef. They made a cute plate for my kid. We came home with leftovers.

Szechuan Mountain House is truly one of the most exciting and consistently delicious restaurants in the East Village. Every time I come here, I’m blown away by how flavorful, vibrant, and perfectly executed the dishes are. The moment you step inside, the ambiance sets the tone — dim, stylish, and buzzing with energy, but still comfortable enough to settle in and really enjoy your meal. The food here is the real star. The heat level is bold without ever sacrificing flavor, and every dish feels thoughtfully crafted. The spices are aromatic, the textures are on point, and even classics taste elevated. Whether it’s a noodle dish, something braised, or one of their signature appetizers, everything arrives hot, beautifully presented, and absolutely packed with flavor. Service is quick and efficient, even when the restaurant is packed (which is almost always). The staff knows the menu well and is great about offering suggestions if you’re stuck between dishes. Portions are generous, prices are fair for the quality, and it’s the kind of place you finish your meal at already thinking about what you want to order next time. If you’re craving authentic, spicy, and deeply satisfying Szechuan food, Szechuan Mountain House never disappoints. Highly recommend!

One of the best Sichuan restaurants in the country, in my opinion. From the well-curated menu and authentic flavors to the consistent execution, attentive service, and tasteful decor, Mountain House delivers a modern Chinese dining experience on par with big-city restaurants in China. Some details I really appreciate: - Complimentary high-quality tea with a lovely floral aroma, served in beautiful cups - Free Sichuan pickled cabbage with excellent texture and flavor (seriously don’t skip it) - Traditional Chinese instrumental music at the perfect volume - relaxing and no vocals! - Consistent seasoning and execution. never had an under or over seasoned dish - Fresh, perfectly cut ingredients. It’s small detail but not to be overlooked. Ingredients are uniform, bite size, and cooked with care Dishes I recommend: - Swing pork belly: The aromatic, garlicky chili oil sauce is the star. Roll a slice of pork with cucumber, drag it through the sauce (make sure you get plenty) and enjoy! - Wonton in chili oil: I rarely order this dish out since I make it at home, but don’t skip it here. Tender filling, generous portion, and a chili sauce so good we straight drank it. - La Zi Chicken: Spicy, numbing, crispy, and just fun to eat. - Ma Ma Hot Fish: this is for those who want next-level numbing. Try the bean sprouts. They’re part of the dish, soaking up all that sauce and pair perfectly with rice. - Sautéed long beans with eggplant: If you’ve never had eggplant cooked Chinese-style, this will convert you. Flash-fried to lock in the silky texture and coated in a savory-sweet sauce. A true rice killer. Mountain House is a must when visiting NYC! Please do plan ahead. Make a reservation or avoid peak time is the way to go.

This is repeat visit, as usual the food is good and it satisfied my cravings for authentic Sichuan food. The staff were great and food came quickly. Make reservations early if you don't want to wait.

This is my second time visiting here and it’s just as amazing as the first! Service was great, Frankie was attentive and so nice. Food was delicious- we had the sliced pork with green peppers, tappan shrimp (amazing!) and snow pee shoots. Our dessert was so pretty and tasted just as good. Would definitely come back!

I will always come back to Mountain House when I need my spicy craving fixed. This is my 10+ time here and it is always satisfying after each meal. Every dish is a flavor bomb, portions are great, and a wide range of menu selection that keeps me coming back to try more dishes. We always get the Lazi Chicken, fish in sour cabbage soup, and beef fried rice. Occasionally, we go back to the house chicken and swing pork belly for something more mild. Overall, amazing food as always, service is great, and remember to make a reservation before coming although the wait isn’t usually too bad with 30 minutes to an hour. One time we came during Mother’s Day and they gave us jasmine tea pudding as complimentary dessert for mothers. Great service!

Tried their Yuxiang Rousi, Spicy Chicken, Cold Pork Slices, and Bingfen, and everything was so good! The Yuxiang Rousi had the perfect mix of sweet, sour, and spicy — super flavorful and tender. The Spicy Chicken was crispy, fragrant, and addictive. The Cold Pork Slices were rich and garlicky but still refreshing. And the Bingfen was the perfect finish — light, cool, and super refreshing after all the spice. The place feels cozy and authentic, and the staff are really friendly. Honestly, it’s one of the best Sichuan spots I’ve had in Manhattan — definitely coming back!
Nov 13, 2025 -
We really enjoyed our meal here. The Boiled Fish was outstanding — tender, fresh, and full of rich, fragrant spice without being overwhelming. It’s easily one of the best versions we’ve had. Our server Sean was also excellent: warm, attentive, and very helpful throughout the meal. Highly recommend this place for anyone looking for delicious Sichuan food and great service!
Nov 12, 2025 -
I went there super hungry, and our server was amazing — so attentive and friendly, which made the whole experience really enjoyable! I loved the fish soup — it was perfectly soft and flavorful. My friend and I thought we wouldn’t be able to finish all the food, but it was so tasty we couldn’t stop eating, haha! I also loved their stylish to-go bags. Definitely recommend this place!

Absolutely amazing! The food is incredibly delicious — every dish is full of flavor and perfectly cooked. The restaurant is beautiful, the atmosphere is great, and the prices are very reasonable. The staff are also super friendly and attentive. One of the best dining experiences I’ve ever had!

I heard a lot of different opinions about Mountain House and all I have to say is that this is excellent food - I’m already looking forward to coming back. The Fu-Qi special was one of the most delicious and unique dishes I’ve had in the last few months, definitely try this is you’re open to trying new things. I really enjoyed the La-Zi chicken as well though they did skimp a bit on the meat, it was mostly peppers as compared to most photos - still delicious however. Lastly the stir fried cauliflower was the best thing I had, so simple yet flavorful. If you’re thinking about coming here, don’t hesitate and give it a shot.

The food here is absolutely amazing! My friends and I came to celebrate the Mid-Autumn Festival — we’re from Sichuan, and the flavors really reminded us of home ?. Our server, Cynthia, was so attentive and friendly. We’ll definitely be coming back!

I came all the way from Canada and can confidently say this is the best Szechuan food in all of North America. I stayed in New York for four nights and ended up having dinner here three times. I just couldn’t stay away. The flavours are incredible, and every dish blew me away. A huge part of what makes this place so special is Frankie. He’s genuinely the sweetest person and always goes above and beyond to make sure everything is perfect. His kindness and warm welcome make every visit memorable.

I always look forward to coming here, not just for the delicious food actually the best Chinese food but because of Frankie. He’s honestly the sweetest person ever! Every time I visit, he treats me so well and makes sure everything is perfect. He has such a kind heart and always makes me feel so welcome. Frankie is the reason this place feels so special to me, and I’m always happy to see him whenever I’m in the area. Thank you, Frankie, for being you—you’re truly the best

I recently dined here, and it was a wonderful experience. The atmosphere was warm and inviting, with traditional décor that set the mood perfectly. The staff was attentive, friendly, and quick to accommodate any requests. The food was the real highlight. The flavors were rich and authentic. Portions were generous and priced fairly, making it a great value. What I appreciated most was the consistency — every dish came out hot, well-seasoned, and beautifully presented.
