Also they allow ppl to wash their dog stuff in the mutual laundry rooms so it looks like this. Disgusting
Really enjoying living here so far! The move-in was easy, and everyone I’ve met has been kind and welcoming. The gym is great, and I love the design throughout the building, chill vibes!:)
Amenities fee but no access to the roof. I’m approaching 2 years at this building and the roof is still under construction and I’m still paying an amenities fee.
I have lived at The Dean for 3 years now and it is a great building with great staff and amenities. The building is well managed and maintained. Every time I have a maintenance request or general questions/comments/concerns I get my answers. I love the door staff and the overall quality of the building!
We’ve been living here for 2 years now and everything about The Dean has been perfect. The building is very quiet. The location is perfect. The amenities are just right, and most importantly, the entire staff is amazing! The door staff is always friendly and helpful. The cleaning staff keeps everything super clean. The super comes right away when you put a request in, and management is responsive and friendly. We’re so lucky to call this place home!
Moved in about 2 months ago and have zero complaints. Management has been very prompt when addressing any issues. Roof has been under construction since I moved in, but they are working on it everyday and I expect it to be open soon. Looking forward to that. Front door

Great building staff really makes it feel like my home and family. We did have roof repair the last few months, but thx to Yaakov, the building manager, he made sure we still have access to most of it.

I moved into 1040 Dean Street this summer and can’t speak enough about my positive experience so far. The amenities are great and the management is responsive and always helpful!
I’ve lived at the Dean for 2 + years now, the management and staff are extremely helpful and always responsive. It’s a great building to live in Crown Heights, the amenities are an additional plus. Highly recommend
I lived here for 3 years with my wife and 2 kids. I agree with just about all the recent reviews here. The day to day staff (door people, Superintendant, cleaning staff etc…) are all wonderful.
Everything else is very bad. Very very bad. What once were a very nice rooftop and courtyard have been under construction for over a year with no end in sight.
Amenities we paid for and couldn’t use. When tenants asked for a suspension of the amenities fees, we were unapologetically denied.
Which brings me to the worst part about the Dean - the management.
Absolutely awful. Uncaring, unkind. Terrible communication, no sense of urgency whatsoever with any issues. Just bad bad bad.
(… ohh, and we sporadically had roaches in our apartment)
If you want to live in this area, perhaps choose one of the dozen other buildings going up.
1040 Dean was a major disappointment. The staff and tenants are very nice, but the building management are terrible and ignore major health concerns. We moved in with our eight week old baby in October and had to move out in January because the mold situation was so bad.
We reached out to management several times about a leak in the ceiling, and after my baby not being able to get over a cough for over six weeks we decided to move out. Management then charged us over $600 to repair several holes in the wall from hooks, even though when we moved in there was a lot of wear and tear that they wouldn't fix because we took over someone's lease.
Attaching a photo of our moldy baby bathtub AFTER it was scrubbed with bleach. It was brand new and became ruined in just a few weeks because the apartment would never dry out. Management did not care about our situation, and I hear the leaks and mold are way worse. If I wasn't juggling a sick baby and working full time, I would have hired an attorney.

The staff who work here are amazing, and our fellow tenants are very friendly and welcoming. Unfortunately this building has a huge leaking problem from the roof and the second floor shared courtyard that has been going on for years despite constant requests from tenants experiencing leaks. They have shutdown the shared courtyard for the last few months to attempt to deal with similar leaks affecting downstairs businesses, but progress is nonexistent/slow. This results in our shared space being unsightly and mostly unusable, especially for dog owners. The roof is also a shared space that has been partially shutdown as they apparently work on the leaks with dangerous amounts of debris and inadequate signage.
A much smaller complaint, but still something to note for prospective tenants, the construction of new buildings on atlantic has also blocked most of the view of manhattan we used to have.
I truly hope management finally takes these leaks seriously and expedited fixing everything permanently but until then I would not recommend this building.
Many apartments have suffered from leaks when it rains. Management have responded by turning the courtyard and roof into a junkyard and left it in disrepair for over a month with piles of junk and ripped up trees everywhere. There is a half hearted tape for “safety”. Amenity fees have not been reduced. Would not recommend renting here if you value safe, clean community spaces and responsive management. Do rent here if you enjoy being treated like a chump.
This building has poor ventilation and tries to mask the foul odours that permeate the halls and lobby using an artificial perfume that is so cloying it’s hard to breathe. Similarly, inside the apartments, the ventilation is no better and it is impossible to fully open the windows to air out the apartment. Furthermore, it advertises itself as a non-smoking building but there are smokers everywhere. This building is completely toxic. On the positive side the sound isolation between units is good.
Building is lovely and so are the neighbors but Mgmt is horrible. A lot of great tenants have been leaving due to poor Mgmt. They are rude and could care less about keeping loyal tenants. If you don’t care about how you’re treated by Mgmt or mishandling of money, dodgy communication etc then consider living here. Even the doormen complain about poor treatment by Mgmt. The roof is great and very dog friendly.
