What clients say about Foodtown of St. Nicholas Ave in New York (NY)

I found out I was a victim of FRAUD at this store when I got home. Looking at my receipt, I was double charged for three items. They charged me an extra $15+ for items I didn't buy. LOOK AND READ your receipt before you leave!!!! Buyer beware!

The one particular stock worker was extremely rude and condescending after a rice was posted on sale. He didn’t remove the sale ticket and proceeded to mock and laugh because it was from last week’s sale. The gentleman at the counter apologized and was extremely helpful. Undesirable behavior and experience from the stock worker. Note that I come here mostly everyday for groceries and NEVER had an encounter like today.

Food town is cool. Fresh produces and sales. They also have a nice section for hygiene products.
Aug 28, 2025 -
Stepped in once, looked at the prices, and left. It’s a joke for the area. You’re better off spending your money elsewhere than being ripped off here.

Bring a lot of patience when you come here. Shopping at this place is one of the worst retail experiences in New York. Stock clerks are very kind and helpful, however the upper management, especially the managers who work the floor and are positioned at the front door when you come, in are incredibly rude and impolite. Forget trying to get things off the shelves when they are restocking (which happens daily). I only shop here when absolutely necessary.

This is the best supermarket you can go to in Hamilton Heights. The fruit, vegetables and meat are EXTREMELY fresh and well priced. When other supermarkets (CTown where everything is expired and rotten) was charging $17 for eggs, this supermarket kept their prices the same and stayed at $5/$6. Love it!
Jul 13, 2025 -
Prices are astronomical here. You're better off ordering off instacart and paying the extra fee and ordering from Food Bazar than shopping here. It's a shame that our local grocery has prices at this level when others are noticeably more affordable than this local Foodtown
Jul 02, 2025 -
Great store. I just wish everything had clear prices displayed for EVERY item...
Jun 02, 2025 -
Love this foodtown. I'm there everyday, sometimes twice a day. The workers are very nice and polite. When you need help they will go to the isles to get what you need. Just love this place.

Unprofessional & Rude service from cashier with white fluffy hair. Cashier rung up my items and proceeded to ask me if I had a bag, I replied with Yes, because I brought my own fishnet recyclable shopping bag. I placed my bag on top of the counter, so I could continue to bag the rest of my groceries i had purchased with the cashier. Cashier notice I had groceries in my bag(Groceries that I bought prior From another store), Cashier proceeded to ask me if she needed to scan those groceries. I told her no I bought them from another store and she looked at me and disbelief And asked me again if I had Really purchased them from elsewhere. I proceeded to ask her if it was What the issue was because It was clear that my groceries were from Whole Foods and once she saw the Whole Foods Lable, I told her that I felt like she needed to apologize About her assumption. She told me with an attitude that she would not apologize. I then spoke to her supervisor Maria about the Incident which, When I told her the story about her rude cashier, she began to laugh in face While minimizing the incident by Giving an excuse that the attitude Coming from her cashier must have been from the "solar eclipse". I mentioned to Maria, how upset I was and how respectful I was to the cashier despite My feelings. I also mentioned how I felt like if the cashier was more observant She would see that my groceries were from Whole Foods and she wouldn't have come to that assumption that I had taken them. Maria said she would speak to the cashier About their behavior. I'll be contacting Better Business Bureau. Cashier did not apologize.
UPDATE:
I was told that they could not offer me an apology from the cashier however they could give me a $30 gift card As a peace offering. For the embarrassment and for the racially profiled experience I went through $30 will never be enough. However, I was satisfied When I went into the store and I saw the cashier was a bit Frighten to see I had come back to resolve the issue. At the end of the day, I hope she felt the way that she made me feel When I was humiliated That day. A lesson to learn to be more professional and not treat your customers with disrespect.Apr 30, 2024 -
Very clean store. Fresh seafood as well as frozen. Nice cuts of meats at she butcher station and in the refrigerator edge section.
Vegan/plant based milk, cheese & frozen items.
I can usually find items like nutritional yeast, fresh fennel, artisan bread & gourmet cheese as well as hot food in this super market.
It had two levels, handicapped accessibilityDec 04, 2023 -
Food is way over priced! The deli area in particular! And the deli team very unpleasant. They always everything wrapped up and you ask for them to unwrap items that you want to purchase fresh from the deli case, the immediately tell you to go to the outside case and choose from the pre packaged items. You have to insist on them giving you fresh food. It's insane.

I've been shopping at this store for quite some time, and I shall not shop here again.
Although cashiers are ill-mannered and unprofessional, I had hope that such behaviors did not trickle from the top. However, I was wrong.
The manager, Felix, proved to me that loyalty to this company means little to nothing and subjected me to a crude, condescending interrogation when I attempted to make a return in good faith.
The disregard and disrespect that I experienced is one that I will associate with this establishment, and frankly, this FoodTown does not deserve longevity.Nov 25, 2023 -
The aisles are a bit small making it a challenge to shop when crowded, but overall it's well organized and a good mix of fresh and prepared items. A good one-stop location for many basics. Friendly service
Aug 08, 2023 -
I have been shopping at this supermarket for over 20 years and is just getting better over time, the staff are really helpful I have to say that the supervisor Mr Mario is just an amazing human being the rest of the staff as well. They will help you with any questions or any issues. Prices are reasonable, great environment to shop.

The food is too expensive. $50.00 will go so fast on three cheap items at this super market then you can buy 12 items at reasonable price at FOOD BAZAAR. And let me tell you this , FOOD BAZAAR is one of the best super markets to go to when you are looking for good deals for anything out of one other super market I care not to mention right now, you must do a little research too , OK ?

The Rotisserie chicken that I purchased was good enough for a few meals, however the stand out of my purchase were Coconut & Pineapple muffins... AMAZING combination; but for the cashier that charged me a quarter of a dollar for a bag and then proceeded to get very rude about returning my change first and then getting my money. What is even more abhorrent is that the cashier was going to take a quarter of a dollar without putting it into the register after she scanned the bag(bare in mind they rarely scan the bag as they punch a button for a bag...even if you use your SNAP benefit). So um no, I will not be going to Foodtown bcs. who cares how great the food is if it has to pass through the hands of such "employees".

Love this place for its location. Anytime I'm at my friend's place and we need food, I just walk downstairs and it's not even 50 steps away. The prices are about average for NYC grocery stores, so don't expect to find a steal. The store is clean and correct which means it gets pretty tight when it's busy, so try to avoid peak hours. And of course my favorite thing, they take Google Pay!
Nov 24, 2022 -
Everyone was so nice!! It's a great place if you're staying for a short time in NY, to grab some food!!!
Jul 18, 2022 -
After going to the one on 163rd, I went here for the first time in about 15 years to see that the whole store had been renovated. Their selection is just as good as 163rd, but the only downside was that inventory is stack very high with no "extension grippers" in sight to get these 8 feet high items. You will have to be 6'2-6'4'' in height to reach some items, I used a unattended mop to get one of my purchase items. Other than that, one of the better supermarkets in the area. You will find a good variety of products you won't find on Broadway in this area

I've always had a pleasant experience while i shopped at this supermarket location. People are respectful and lines may be long at times, but its always moving. I would only say at closing time they might close 5 to 10 minutes earlier then expected online and the hours on the front door aren't valid. I only know because i saw some residence trying to get in 5 minutes before closing asking the door man if they can enter to grab something real fast and they got very upset, because they denied entry and stated their manager said it's closed already. So if you need to pick something up real quick don't try 5-10 minutes before closing try maybe 15 minutes before so you won't get denied access to enter.

This place is much improved over the “bad old days” from before the big remodel. Selection is good, although what they carry can change randomly. What is really annoying is that they restock the store during open hours, clogging the aisles blocking the shelves with walls of boxes. If they did stock work after hours, I’d give them 4 stars.
Dec 30, 2020 -
I gave the place a four star because the staff were willing to go out of their way to get you what you needed if it wasn't stocked. However the place can try to stock as fast as the items run out. Yet it all the staff were nice and its location off of the train is very convenient for locals.
Nov 17, 2020 -
The Supermarket is much better than it was before. They have fresh vegetables, brighter lights so you can see what you are purchasing, more organized foods, a variety of foods, vegan, soy, etc. The only thing I wish they could work on is their aisle size, the aisle are very narrow, it's hard for two people to pass. It also would be good if they had some cashiers that spoke English, as everyone does not speak Spanish. Overall a very nice Supermarket.
Nov 10, 2020 -
The supermarket is small but with a great variety of things. Very neat and clean! No complaints about that but just make sure you check your receipt before you leave or just pay attention on the cash register at what you being charged to make sure the prices on your purchase match the sale prices they advertise on the Flyers or the products for the day. It happens to me many times that when I'm back home I realized that I've been charged the full price when the item was advertised on sale for much less. Just be aware of that!! It's a matter of principle!!

I shop here because it right around the corner from where I live, but I personally don’t care for it. It’s over priced, and even when you sign up for a club card and have it scanned when you check it, you don’t always get the discounts. Idk if the sales are always updated in the system or what but if you don’t pay attention at check out, you aren’t saving money. For example there was a sale on the Natures Own bread. It was 2 for $5 with the club card. I bought 2 loafs of wheat and 2 loafs white. I didn’t realize until I got home and checked my receipt that I didn’t get the discount. I paid what ever they are at regular price. There was also a sale on Wishbone Blue Cheese dressing for $1.99. That I paid full price. I didn’t bother to go back because it always a hot mess in that store busy and always a line for customer service. I just pay attention every time I check out. I don’t care if the cashier checking me out or the customers in line waiting get irritated! I work hard for my money and I refuse to be taken advantage of by the store!
I’m not writing this review to bad mouth the store, but I hope they read this and look into this, it’s not fair to the customers. It shouldn’t be our responsibility to remember ever sale item we have so we know we are getting those discounts at check out! They should be updated in the system and taken off at check out.
*please customers just make sure your checking your receipts and pay attention a check out. Unless you like paying full price, I’m telling you pay attention!Dec 12, 2019 -
The store is clean and nice, but the prices are outrageous. The store manager is gouging prices on several different items, but especially I noticed the meat (chicken) is DOUBLE that of the Foodtown just 2 blocks away. We're talking $9 for a lb of Foodtown brand chicken cutlets.
I brought this to his attention, but the prices remained the same. Be careful, y'all.Sep 13, 2017 -
Its convenient and has some of the items I like. Only problem is whenever items are on sale, the sale prices don't come up at register which then makes convenience a hassle and timely. On a few occasions, I didn't check my receipt until I arrived home and I found I was over charged. When I come back to store, the manger always rectify the difference. Now I check my receipt and watch the prices at the register. They should make sure all sale items are in the system for better customer service & quicker process.
