My advice from experience:
1. Keep an airtag in your car so you know where your car gets towed
2. Confirm amount to pay so you can bring exact cash and avoid fee
3. Go early, when they open, so you don’t have to wait in line
4. Email them your ID, registration and insurance photos in advance
I like that the staff were friendly. They charged me the amount they said it would be over the phone and according to the sign, then allowed me to go to my car to get my registration and insurance. My only qualms were that the window to hand the documents is very low down to the ground LOL and the potholes in the lot were insane. It’s under a bridge and pretty loud, but I’m satisfied it was smooth process and that they do answer the phone. Also the worker was kind enough to let me know the numbers written in white marker on windshield comes off with hand sanitizer. Hated that I had to be there, but was as pleasant as experience could be.
I didn’t have a bad experience. The down side is that you do have to wait some time depending how many people is at the entrance. I got to the impound at 12 I had forgotten that they go on break at that time. I left at around 3:30 and had to come back the next day it was because of a small mistake that the insurance guy made but I did go back the next day at 9am and I was brought in fast because I was there the day before. They were helpful and not rude to me and helped me out. You just need to keep in mind that it’s going to take time and that it’s a process they do make sure you have everything in check. Which I don’t mind that at all. Make sure to bring everything you need. They accept debit, credit or cash that’s what the nice lady taking care of me mentioned.
Would rate 0 stars if possible; absolutely ridiculous experience . Bought a car from the city of Jersey City. It was a retired service vehicle January 24 was the day I originally tried to pick up the car and to this day presently February 16 I still haven’t been able to take the car all because it is snowed in and they are refusing to clear the snow. The first time that I came with the tow truck. The tow truck literally got stuck in the snow and they keep telling me to call back every other day to ask for the manager that I have yet to hear from and the times I do call back sometime they don’t answer at all even if I call five or six times periodically throughout the day. Figuring out ways to escalate this because this is honestly ridiculous. I don’t even have the willingness to even want to go and pick up the car at this point. Guaranteed first and last time dealing with this
I’m giving this place 1 star on principle, because I still have no idea why our car was towed even though we already pay $130/month for a parking permit. The whole experience was frustrating from start to finish.
First, the entrance to the impound lot is completely unmarked. The only sign you see says “Do Not Enter – Authorized Vehicles Only,” which is super confusing. You basically just have to ignore that and drive in. Only after that do you find a small sign actually indicating the police impound lot.
On top of that, they close for lunch from 12–1 PM. Must be nice to get a guaranteed lunch break that shuts down the entire place—wish I had that at my job.
And the parking lot itself? Absolutely terrible. There are potholes everywhere, so make sure you don’t pop a tire on the car you drove to pick up your towed car. The whole setup feels unnecessarily stressful.
Thankfully, I didn’t have to wait 2 hours like other reviews have mentioned. On a Friday afternoon in mid-November with 2 people in front of me, it took under an hour.
Overall, the process was confusing and inconvenient. Definitely not a pleasant experience.
Great place to spend a Friday, right under a loud highway and trudging through muddy gravel. Thanks so much Jersey City Parking Authority for towing my monthly-permitted vehicle and causing massive headaches! 5/5 inconvenience score; 0/5 overall.
Basically you get punished twice, by paying and by waiting long hours outside and then waiting long hours inside, it’s probably worse than hell itself!
the worst customer service, they have people STANDING for over 2 hours waiting just to get your car. They obviously need more employees or better training. Terrible job with this company.
My car was impounded here, and stayed overnight. But I have to say after resolving my issue with MVC, I was able to pick up my car, and the team that was working at the impound lot, were very respectful and professional. They did not give me a hard time and helped me in the process. The reason they're getting 4 stars instead of 5, they towed my car! But other than that very great team !
Horrible! You will wait for hours and the worst customer service. They do not allow you to see your vehicle or get anything from it. They want you to surrender it. They do da mage the vehicles the way they tow them too.

My 2015 Hyundai Elantra car was placed into impound for “safekeeping” after someone tried to steal it. Even though I am the legal owner, with full documentation, insurance, and police reports, they are refusing to release it to me solely because of a suspended license tied to a 2012 ticket issued fraudulently under my name by someone who stole my identity.
Despite having filed a formal identity theft affidavit, providing the police report, and actively working with the courts to clear my name, I am being charged daily fees and denied access to my property. This is a violation of my rights and of several NJ laws, including:
N.J.A.C. 13:21-26.5 allows identity theft victims to challenge suspension and prevents enforcement based on fraudulent activity.
N.J.S.A. 39:5-30.8, which protects identity theft victims from administrative penalties or license actions resulting from impersonation.
It also likely violates due process protections under the U.S. Constitution by depriving me of property without timely justification.
Jersey City Police fail to follow proper protocol in documented identity theft cases. Their impound facility is holding my car hostage and adding hundreds of dollars in unjust fees, while showing zero accountability or willingness to help resolve the issue. I have reached out multiple times with complete paperwork and have been ignored or dismissed.
If you're a victim of a crime in Jersey City, don’t expect protection; expect punishment. I’m contacting the media and civil rights advocates to expose this systemic misconduct.
