What clients say about Old Chain of Rocks Bridge in St. Louis (MO)
-
It’s a long walk to the river from the Illinois side. When you start from Illinois side, the bridge is just going over “bottom land” next to the river. I’d say it over 1/4 mile to get over the water. It’s interesting to see the pump stations in the river. There is one sign at the entrance but not much else in Route 66 from this side. Note that the walk is literally uphill both ways, as there is a crest in the middle of the bridge. Note: the parking lot is very isolated. The day we were there several people, including families with children were walking on the bridge late in the afternoon. But I can see that it might be dangerous to be in that parking lot as it gets dark.

My first time today walking the bridge. An incredible piece of history that needs to be preserved. Please.. somebody paint it.

A route 66 bridge across the Mississippi. Mile long pedestrian bridge between MO and IL. Well worth visiting for the history.

The bridge parking is easy to get to. Obey the traffic light coming and going. The views from the bridge are great and its a great way to see the new bridge being built.

Old Chain of Rocks Bridge Parking at Chain of Rocks Rd is a convenient and practical place to park if you’re planning to visit the Old Chain of Rocks Bridge and the surrounding walking or biking trails. The parking area is easy to access, with enough spaces for most visitors, and it sits right by the historic bridge entrance so you don’t have a long walk to start your visit. The bridge itself is interesting to explore, especially if you enjoy unusual views of the Mississippi River and historic engineering. The area feels peaceful and open, great for a casual walk, bike ride, or photos. One downside is that amenities like restrooms or shade are limited, so plan accordingly. Tip: Bring water and comfortable shoes if you’re walking across the bridge—it’s long and exposed to the sun.

This is a great walk whether going as a couple or a family or friends. The bridge goes out over the Mississippi and provides great views down river to St Louis. I recommend parking on the Illinois side of the river and walking out through the nature area on the bridge. The round trip walk is just over 2 miles and has a very gentle grade.

What an experience! You may not think walking across a bridge could be exciting but it was really something. Actually crowded with families walking the mile long bridge. The view on both sides is stellar and who knew those two buildings in the middle of the Mississippi river, built in late 1800s, were water pumping stations and still operational! The Illinois side has a great beach for fishing.

Great history, super nice stroll across the bridge and back. The pump houses are amazing and I wish I could hear their story.. Just think of all the floods they have withstood. And its all FREE!!!! Take plenty of water. The grandson loved finding across and back several times.

Stopped here on a whim. Was on a road trip and wanted to see more of Route 66. We only went partway across the bridge due to the heat but if it had been cooler we would have gone across and back. Beautiful views of the Mississippi and downtown St Louis.

The Old Chain of Rocks Bridge was the original crossing over Mississippi River of the first alignment of Route 66, from Illinois into Saint Louis. Now the bridge is closed to motor vehicles and can be crossed by pedestrian and bicycles only. The car can be parked right before the bridge entrance.

Worth stopping for nice stroll across the Mississippi/Illinois River. Bridge actually has a bend in it, but much makes it very unique. Nice shelter but port-a John’s were pretty disgusting when we stopped.

A nice little park with an interesting view as you walk. Lots of history here! Just be aware that you will encounter lots of encouragement to not jump from the bridge. If you are sensitive to this content, this park may not be for you

Awesome views of the the river and the intake towers. Came down for an even that allowed us to drive over the bridge. It's a great place to walk with your family and lots of spots for photos. The Missouri side has been redone and it's very nice.

Gorgeous view, love seeing the animals, Bald Eagle are rare but swing by in the winter. I also love the history once you look into the pump stations and the Route 66 sign. Wish there was more info on sight or QR codes to give more info.

Very cool. Ridge that you can still walk with great views of the Mississippi River and you can see the Arch on good days. 1 mile across and so unique in structure and architecture.

Beautifully kept historical bridge on old route 66 that connects Illinois to Missouri. It is now a pedestrian bridge with a great overlook of Saint Louis, and the two water tower buildings. Free parking, and about a mile all the way across.

Very beautiful walk across the bridge with views of St. Louis skyline, Mississippi River, and nature in general. Felt neat to take a walk through history.

This Was my first time at this bridge 🌉. It been there since the 80s. Not really sure 👍 how long but me and my friend went there for a few reasons . One I have always wanted to see the bridge 🌁 and the second reason they used this bridge in one of my favorite films 🎥 and that movie is escape from New York . They use the bridge towards the end of the film and just to walk on it was very very very cool 😎 I will say make sure you you go to the bathroom before you get there because the bathrooms that are the front of the bridge are suppose to be open and they are not. I tried the handle and it was locked 🔐 . So use the restroom 🚻 before you go. I think there are bathrooms 🚽 on the other side if the bridge that you can use . Someone that was there told us that . Hope he was telling the truth. . No one was there so it’s very peaceful and you can walk or run over it You can also bike across it . They no longer have cars 🚙 go across it . We pretty much had it all to ourselves and we filmed on it for my YouTube vlog and then we left . If you live in IL or Missouri it is really worth checking out at least once I totally 💯 recommend it FOLLOW ME ON TIKTOK AT FEARSMAN26 Follow Me on YouTube At Fearsman26

Old historic bridge that was part of Route 66, the 22-degree bend is truly something. Great to walk across or bike across. City of Madison locks it at sunset so no access and parking is only on the IL side.

I love stopping here and walking the bridge. Beautiful place, I love the history behind the bridge and the fact you can still walk across it to either Illinois and Missouri

Very interesting and beautiful old bridge. It happened to be closed the day we were there. It's a very long walk. Or you can ride bikes across it as well. Interesting one way bridge to get to this spot too!

Experience this historic bridge by walking over. Part of the bridge turns 20 degrees. Neat sign board on the Wisconsin side includes a button to play the song "Get Your Kicks on Route 66".

Historic mile long bridge. Bit of a drive to get to the parking lot, you cross a small channel bridge first. Great stop on a Route 66 trip for a chance to see the mighty Mississippi and stretch your legs! Lots of parking, RV and trailer spots available.

This bridge is such a great place to walk, rides bikes, road trip and so much more. It has been fun going magnet fishing off the bridge. Also, this is such a great spot for photography! Not only are you 90 feet up in the air, but you can see so much for miles and miles. Makes photography easy (ollland real nice

Shame the area isn’t more positively developed. Amazing views, very peaceful and relaxing. A few signs with some Route 66 information. Well worth the journey to get there. Unfortunately, both sides are a bit sketchy. The only parking is on the Illinois side after a long drive down a road with questionable buildings at its entrance. The only restroom is on the Missouri side, a port-a-potty. I hope in the future some positive development can take place to make this a location people will want to visit more frequently.

Amazing bridge. Great walk on a piece of historical Rt. 66. Best time for photo is near sunset. One mile bridge across the Mississippi River. So plan at least one hour for a round trip. Bridge will be cleared by police at around 9:15pm in June.

So cool, what a day to just enjoy the views. Historic a comfortable Mile walk across the bridge, enjoy the birds flying, scan the river banks for people fishing. Excellent opportunity for walkers or bicycling.

From the IL side, it was about a mile round trip to hike to the middle of the bridge and back. Great views, quiet up there. The Mighty Mississippi! Parking easy, nice flat surface to walk so stroller and wheel chair friendly. Interesting spot.

Great views, and a nice easy walk across the river. If you're into bird watching this seems like a good place, we saw a few cardinals and plenty of nests in the trees right at bridge level. Cool little historical facts and items along the length of the bridge as well. Unfortunately the Missouri side of the bridge is not open for parking, but there was plenty of space in the Illinois lot.
