As a girl who knows nothing about cars and hates every single aspect of having to maintain one I’ll say this: I’ve never been talked down to here, and my dad is always satisfied with the work they do and the price they charge me.
We are incredibly lucky to have a family owned, honest, and dependable auto care shop in our neighborhood. I have several teenage drivers and we rely on Schaefer’s for their affordable and expert care that we trust. We had a quick turn around for our kid as they got ready to drive back to school 10 hours away and we were relieved that we could confidently send them on their way after Troy and his staff worked their magic. Also, Matt is always helpful when we need a quick inspection and do an early morning drop off.

I’ve been to this shop several times, and my experience has been mixed at best. The receptionist (and owner?) is polite sometimes but has a rude demeanor in about half of my interactions, which makes the experience frustrating. They also don’t do a good job explaining diagnoses or repairs, and I often leave with more questions than answers.
They have replaced my catalytic converter twice after my original was stolen. The first one failed within six months. They replaced it under their one-year warranty but still charged me over $300 for labor. Maybe that is standard practice, but it never made sense to me since I would not have needed to pay for labor if their part had not failed so quickly. The second catalytic converter lasted about two years before failing again, and this time they said it is no longer under warranty.
When I asked how long catalytic converters are supposed to last, I was told there is “no set time.” No one offered any further explanation or seemed interested in helping me understand. Overall, I left feeling like they did not care much about customer service or standing behind their work.
I have gone here twice and but underwhelmed both times. I had an issue with my AC that I was told was due to the after market radio I put in and that there was nothing they could do about it. When I went to get a second opinion, the second mechanic told me that the radio and AC rarely have anything to do with each other. He had my AC working in an hour. Not to mention, that they did an oil change without asking and forgot to put the crush washer back after doing so (which the second mechanic found later that day). To give the full picture, I was told that they did the oil change because there was no oil in the car. However, that was only brought to my attention the second time I went in that day to ask about the missing crush washer. Between the fact that they waited to tell me about my low oil and that I topped my oil off about two weeks before, I am weary that is the reason the oil change was done. I had high hopes because I have family members that had a good experience here. Perhaps it was a misunderstanding, but regardless I am less than impressed and did not feel like I was getting the whole truth.
Had an appointment to get an oil change scheduled for 8am. Walked in at 8:03am because of their ridiculous parking lot that is nearly impossible to access. Was told I missed my window by walking in 3 minutes after they opened. Guy was a jerk. 0 out of 10 experience.
Went there yesterday to get my sway bar replaced and my car is worse than it was when I gave it to them. It starts shaking roughly at 60 mph and it makes a weird sound during every initial acceleration. Paid almost $300 for something basically inoperable. The receptionist also had a rude demeanor.
I recently moved here and when my car broke down I was in a panic, I came to them under great stress. To say Matt couldn't be nicer, is an understatement. I've gone back here now several times and you cannot beat: 1. The price 2. The quality of work 3. The fact that they are not rude when I ask questions. Thank you to everyone that works here.
I am very much not a car person so when my car started shuddering and my engine was bouncing like it wanted to hop away, I got very nervous! These folks got me in fast and my car was diagnosed with a bad ignition coil and spark plugs. Fixed in a day! I'll be back for sure
They are quick ,efficient and fair priced. The only people I trust with my car in STL. Don’t go to a chain place. They will take care of you here and also provide great customer service and knowledge.
So glad I chose Schaefer for my oil change. They had it done in 30 minutes while I walked my dog in the lovely St Louis Hills neighborhood. Very, very nice & professional. This visit was kind of a test - now I know where to take my car when I need any repairs. Oh - price was great, too. I highly recommend.
I had Grey smoke coming out of my vents! I dropped my jeep off and Schaefer auto care thoroughly checked her out. Luckily nothing serious was wrong. this place took extra time to make sure it was fine before they let me drive it again. the jeep has been fine ever since!
I cannot stress enough just how good this place is. The people are nice, welcoming, knowledgeable, and helpful. It was one of the best auto-care experiences I've ever had. Would definitely recommended to anyone in the area looking for complete auto-care.
My car broke down in front of Schaefer Auto Care and Troy went out of his way to give me great advice. He told me to take it to my dealership because he thought my issue would be covered under warranty. He easily could have tried to convince me to use them and I would have obliged since I am clueless when it comes to cars. The honesty made me feel trusting, and I plan on using them anytime I have car issues that are not under warranty. Thanks again, Troy.
Been going to this shop for over ten years. See all those cars in the lot? They’re busy for a reason. I’ve had multiple repairs over the years and always feel like these guys are being straight with me. Trusting your auto repair shop is everything. They’re local, they have had the same staff for years and they don’t mess around. This is your spot.
I went in person on 5/1 to schedule an appt for an oil change and tire rotation. I explained that I had "their advertised coupon" on Facebook for $22.95. He immediately said "We cannot do it for that price if you have synthetic oil." I stated that wasn't the case. Then he said we will have to have a printed coupon to get that price for their bookkeeping. That part is fine, but by his his tone of voice, I felt he was trying to make it difficult for me to use the coupon.
Went to Schaefer on a recommendation from a friend for a funny noise coming from a tire. They got me in the next day, called me after 2 hours and I had my car back by the afternoon. I needed an air filter and they did that for me. Patched my tire (nail in the tire) and changed my Filter. $67.
Super nice, fast, and I really felt like they were being honest. I was shocked at the price! Went to Dobbs and they wanted to charge me $50 for air filter, $50 for oil change and then wanted me to buy other stuff. Felt uncomfortable.
Will 100% make them my go-to from now on.
I husband and I go here all the time for oil changes and small repairs. When the weather got colder day aired up my tires for free. I need a windshield replaced and they were the cheapest place to have that done. Do you have a hole in your tire? They can fix it. Even weird noises that your car is making that can usually figure out. They never try to sell you into something that you don’t need. If you want someone friendly and affordable to get the job done quickly this is the place to go.
Needed to have an emissions test performed on my 2017 Ford Escape. Tried a few places with no success. One was closed down that I frequented and the other said no appointment no service. Said they were baked up and only had two service technicians and on on to why he couldn't do it. I remembered this place from when the church van needed it's inspections how I was able to drop it off and how they called me when it was done. Only this time it was about 7:25am and I had no place to go nor be. I was prepared to wait however long it would take if he said that they could do it. Well, I was asked if I could leave it . I told him that I had no place to be, if it would be alright if I waited. I told him that I don't care how long it takes, that getting this inspection is what I purposed to do today. He said hold on. Then he asked if it was for emissions only, I said yes. He asked for my keys and said hang out for a few. To my surprise they immediately pulled my car right into a bay, and took care of me right Away. I thanked him, and praised God for the favor I was shown. That was very kind and very considerate and most thoughtful of them to do that for me. Word of mouth goes a long ways, I will be forever speaking well of this place. Great service you can trust ?, Troy and the crew will take care of you! I have had nothing but good experience with them. I went in for 4 tires and a oil change and I was out of there in about 70 minutes and Justin is going to do it right just like the rest of the crew! I highly recommend them for all your automotive needs! I will be back.
