Have been taking extra recycling here for years and generally good experiences with friendly staff. They have randomly been closed like 3 times out of 20+ visits but besides that no issues. Super convenient for many nearby neighborhoods
Make sure to come well in advance of scheduled closing time. Showed up at 1:31 to be turned away but an unfriendly employee, even though the website says they close at 2. "You should have shown up before 1:30." Well, I guess you should update your website, City of Pittsburgh.
Evidently only for city residents. The gate attendant felt the need to be nasty and rude about it rather than just tell me this information. I assumed it was for Allegheny county residents in the west end area. I went because my neighborhood doesn’t have anywhere to drop off cardboard, and no one ever picks it up.
BEWARE: if you dont live in the city of Pittsburgh you are not allowed to drop off anything...
I live in Imperial and drove almost 10 miles to there and was told I am not allowed coz I dont live in the city of Pittsburgh... I want to drop 6 piece of used heavy metal car parts and a pair of tires... what a bummer!
I was calling to help an autistic man and the lady wouldn't even speak to me. I told her I didn't live in the city (he does) and she just kept repeating, "I can't help you, it's for Pittsburgh residents only" everytime I tried to finish asking my question. Then, when I said to stop being rude she hung up on me. I tried calling back, no answer. I've never had such a rude customer service person in my life. I wouldn't recommend using them and reinforcing behavior such as this.
There is sometimes confusion there with new workers..wanted to charge me for dropping off recycling because I had a pickup truck..went to office and they said $20 charge is for yard debris drop off with truck..free yard debris or recycling drop off with car..free recycling drop off with truck also
I have a fax machine that no longer works. A friend of mine, who lives in the city, told me about the West End drop off center. The, and I use the term loosely, lady I spoke to was very rude. She told me that the drop off center is only for city residents. It was almost like it was beneath her to even answer the phone and I was taking her away from her coffee break even though I called at 8:30 AM.
There was a worker there that was very helpful when out of his way to make sure everything went well for me I wish I would have got his name but I didn't
We were turned away at the gate today for not having a “City of Pittsburgh” address. They obviously have no idea what constitutes “city” because our home is in fact in the city limits and we pay city taxes. They are completely unhelpful and unwilling to listen to facts.
Had to dump two truckloads of yard debris. Everyone there was very helpful - even the people who didn't work there. The attendant was very nice and helpful. Extremely easy experience, and much better than paying someone to do the work. **Be aware that you can ONLY pay by money order (there is a Shop n Save about a mile away that does them).
Have had to take yard debris here several times. They are always friendly, be sure to bring your license as to verify residency. Open Saturdays and Saturdays but with shortened hours. They do not accept stone, rocks, or bricks, but recommended a facility that would.
