What clients say about Recycling Drop-Off Center in North Kansas City (MO)

I like that they now have compost recycling bins, now. That may make me give it a try to further cut down on garbage. I wish hours were better, but budgets are what they are.

Every Christmas for about 5 years I go and ask the head volunteer (who has been John for many years) if I can take paper for Christmas wrapping, and he always says yes. The finds vary but it’s always a good move for the planet! With permission I also go into the far right building and look through the books about to be recycled. Sometimes it’s just out of date technical manuals but every once in a while there’s a treasure like a lovely copy of a Shakespeare play or the original Winnie the Pooh, which make lovely and free Christmas gifts. As long as you get permission and follow directions, the staff is always lovely.

Quick, efficient, had two boxes, assisted by volunteers, carried the aborted items and dumped them in the bins. There's also an animal-proof composting area. Volunteers knew their 'stuff.'

I never see this place open. The hours suck. How is the average person who works 9 to 5 supposed have access.
Nov 23, 2025 -
The volunteers are very rude. They also take very few items. The KCMO website said they would take more, the when you get there they very aggressively tell you NO.

The people there keep it organized and clean and are always ready to help and answer questions. One little known fact. You can find moving boxes there

Great place to drop off lots of recycling. They take scrap metal! They do not accept batteries or aerosol cans. You'll have to go to the hazardous waste facility in the North Kansas City area for that stuff.

I carefully sort and clean my garbage, storing it in my basement for weeks before I have enough to drop off. When I finally get enough I go to drop it off, only to have a volunteer in a safari hat follow me around, literally diving in the dumpsters after me to pull items back out to give to me to take back home. It happens every time.

This place is awesome and great to have. Not a lot of recycling options in the area but they cover alot. I'd volunteer here if I lived here. Please drop off your items. We can't keep going to landfill.
Jun 06, 2024 -
Normally open until 4pm they are closed early temporarily because staff have Covid. Please check KCMO recycling page for current hours

Everything is great 😃 just wish plastic cups, containers which hold fruit and baked goods were able to be accepted again...now there is twice as much trash. Not smart Kansas City.

Suggest an edit to hours open. I tried calling and their phone service says that they are closed today. Please edit so others aren't confused on if you are open or not on Saturday. Thanks

I went to the center to get moving boxes on the advice of a friend. The young man working there was extremely helpful and showed me where to find some perfect boxes. He even helped me bring some to my car! The boxes were in excellent condition and I loved not having to pay for them!

7/20/2023 - I dropped off a number of cardboard boxes off to be recycled. It was very easy to find and a very easy process. However, one of the volunteers was EXTREMELY rude and condescending. Rather than yelling at us of something not going in a certain bin or can't be recycled, that would have been a great time to educate. I'm glad that he's passionate about recycling, however, some customer service would go way further! The other volunteer lady was amazing! She greeted us and offered to help us move the cardboard from the vehicle to the bin.

Not allowed to recycle plastic water bottles unless they are fully inflated. Smashing the air out of a water bottle before recycling it is unacceptable. Seems like a lot of gasoline being used to move these huge recycling containers around town to drop off plastic bottles at Waste Management recycling centers. The huge containers have much more air than plastic. This is because of the limited technology at Waste Management recycling that is unable to separate plastics. There are many forms of plastic, and most plastic is not able to be reused at all. Please do your own research on plastic recycling before bringing any plastic here. They do a great job filling the containers with cardboard, paper and paperboard. I think the aluminum cans need to be crushed to remove the air also. John the manager here works his butt off and is making a positive impact on the community.

This is a very nice place to take my recycling. The man who I see there all the time is very helpful about where to put certain items. Thank you!
Mar 14, 2023 -
There are very clear instructions on what goes where. The staff always has the appropriate knowledge to answer my questions. They do not accept batteries.

It's free to drop off. Just bring sorted recyclables and place in the correct bins. It can get busy though, so be prepared to possibly wait in line (in your car) if it's a weekend. But then then, the line moves quickly.

I’m so glad we have a place like this in our community! The bins are visibly labeled, and the volunteers are always a great help. The location right off the highways is so convenient too. I’d recommend trying to have your recyclables separated before coming for a quick drop off.

It's a great facility if you can find something that they will take. Their web site says they take plastics #1-7. This actually means they take milk jugs and water bottles. Find another solution for all your other plastics and save the frustration of taking your recyclables for a car ride there and back home.

Gotta pay close attention to the hours and days they are open, but no complaints with how easy it is to sort and drop off my extra recycling and glass.

Easy to get to from I-435 east or I-49 south. Take Red Bridge Rd exit and the Recycle Center is your first right off Red Bridge Rd. Plenty of space to pull in, lots of recycling dumpsters too. Friendly staff!

Good place to recycle! You do have to separate things yourself. The staff is always kind and helpful!

Haven't been to a recycling center in years. Was looking around for the bin to recycle paper. Had some hardcover and softcover books. Guy came over and said the hardcovers don't go in that bin. Okay, which bin do they go in? He just said "put them to the side". I put them to the side and asked if I could recycle glass dishes. Guy looks and them and says.."yeah...(sigh)...I guess". I then ask again about where to put the hardcover books. He says its a different bin. I asked which one. He says it's at the end but it's always closed and I'll need to always ask for help. The hardcover book recycle bin is quite mysterious I guess. I'm trying to clear out about 30 years of clutter from a house and wanted to recycle what I could. Now I know better. To the dumpster it goes.

This is a well run drop off center. I recommend going early on Saturday if you like going on weekends because it gets quite busy in the afternoon!
Jan 24, 2021 -
The drop off center itself is fine. My city doesn’t offer recycling, so this is a great alternative. However, the volunteers, at least when I was there, were extremely rude and not remotely helpful. Would be 5 stars but the people working there were unpleasant.
Jan 23, 2021 -
Excellent volunteers, a very orderly and safe process. People are so polite to each other- nice to see community come together for a change.
Oct 18, 2020 -
The VOLUNTEERS were extremely helpful. It was my first time there and they helped me through the process. I recommend you check the website before going that way you're not wasting their time like me. Open on Saturdays for people that can't make it during the work week
Jul 18, 2020 -
Clear instructions on signage. Volunteers knowledgeable and willing to answer questions so we get it right. Saturdays can be busy and bins are very full.

The people there were super helpful and everything was clearly marked. Right off of the highway. There were more categories than I anticipated, but now I know to sort ahead of time (splitting out tin and aluminum, as well as keeping cardboard, paper, and thick paper all separate).
