What clients say about Steven's Auto Clinic in Alexandria (VA)

I stopped by Steven’s Auto when my car was breaking down, hoping for a quick diagnosis. I approached the shop owner, but he rudely turned me away, insisting he couldn't look at my car for even a minute without an appointment. He quoted me $275 just for the diagnosis! I ended up waiting for hours for someone to tow my vehicle. The sign clearly states that they are "the alternative to the dealerships," but my experience suggests they are even worse. I would not recommend this shop to anyone.

I love Steven’s Auto Clinic! When we were buying our first house, the previous owner told us about Steve’s honest work. The first time, I went to Steven Auto Clinic was a water pump issue. The Toyota dealership told me it would cost $3500 for them to install a new pump since it was leaking. I took it to it Steve’s Auto Clinic. Steve looked under the hood and said the water pump was fine. He didn’t even charge for checking. I loved him since. He is always busy. I call him to see when it is a good time to see him. Another time, I didn’t realize that the back seatbelts are locked. I was having family visiting so I needed the back seatbelts. He unlocked them for me without charging. It is best to drop off the car. His seating place has gradually filled up with car parts since he is a small shop. It’s worth going there. It’s hard finding a realizable and honest auto clinic. Every time I get a new car, I have Steve take care of it. I am so sad after 26 years, I have more out to the midwest. No one can fill his shoes. I never seen such a hard working person. He has experienced mechanics which helps greatly. I went and had my car serviced a day before I moved. I made Steve a afghan for Christmas one year. He did alot of work on all my Toyotas. I highly recommend Steven’s Auto Clinic.

I just called in to explain my issue with the person who answered the phone. However, he stopped me mid sentence stating mam I don't sell tires. HOW CAN I HELP YOU.... Immediately I was turned off. I politely answer I was trying to explain to you, but never mind. I will for sure take my business else where. I only tried to be a patron because I just moved in the neighborhood and he was close by. The only reason this review is getting one star.

Steve consistently provides honest assessment of car and what repairs need to be done. Had my car repaired by him a few months back and took for inspection other day. It failed inspection and brought over to Steve and he reviewed car and it indeed should have failed. He got safety inspection taken care of and I am grateful. Highly recommend Steve and he has been our auto mechanic for all our cars for the past 18 years.

Steven's just saved me $950 and help expose a dealer attempting to replace good rear brakes. Steve assisted me in getting satisfaction from the dealer. Dealers can often be predatory - Steven is just plain honest and helpful. He earned my respect and business.

Very Dissatisfied and Disappointed with Stevens Auto Clinic, I have been bringing him my vehicles for the past 20 years. Recently I brought in my 2007 ES-350 for a inspection and assessment. Steve listed a number of maintenance items, plus he said that my car was leaking oil from the timing chain cover area. At first, he suggested that I 'trade in' my vehicle or complete the repair that he estimated would costs ($2200 - 2900) and indicated that a further exam (an additional $195) would clarify and confirm the need. Of course, because the seriousness of the claim I said to 'go ahead' with the exam. After it I went to see Steve and the vehicle to get the results. With Steve, under the vehicle, Steve pointed out some 'discoloration' under the carriage in the area of the timing belt. I went to feel the spot with my fingers, and felt no oily, greasy feeling that one would feel if there was a leak. Steve provide no further diagnostics for the 'oil leak.' I asked him whether it could be mud or residual leakage from other fluids being replaced into the car. He said no, and insisted that I had a oil leak that would grow massively within 1-2 years! At this point, I realized that he was talking a 'potentiality' not a reality! I've told him I am not losing any oil nor showing any spillage on my drive way, but he insisted I had a leak I tried to negotiate a reconciliation with him later but he would not yield. Too bad, now I wonder about other car work he has performed... maybe you should too! Now, 3 years later, there is no oil leaking from the timing belt cover! Steve was wrong as I said before! Beware

DO NOT recommend - I attempted to have an oil change service performed on my 2021 mini cooper; however, the gentleman (and I use the term loosely) I spoke with was so rude I ended up walking out of the shop. He wanted to charge me $200 for the oil change, and he clearly did not want my business. We live locally in the Mount Vernon area, and formerly relied on Tony's in Old Town, which was subsumed by Yates (and we haven't been happy since), so I was trying to establish another service location. Unfortunately, Steven's is not interested in acquiring new customers. I would not recommend this service location.

Hello, whoever answers the phone is very rude! I called to get a price quote and before I could even finish my question, their response was “I don’t want to deal with it”. He claimed because I just had the code and not what was actually wrong with it; it would be too time consuming to give a price quote. That is VERY unprofessional. And now I see why the reviews are so low. You guys need to learn how to treat customers with RESPECT who are trying to spend their hard earned money with YOU.

Steven is the only place I have found around here who gives you the truth about the parts and the labor. He doesn’t price gouge. Reading some of the low reviews here leads me to believe some people don’t understand how mechanics work. Mechanics work just like we do and troubleshooting vehicles is not free. Seriously will you take three of your hours in a day doing your craft profession for someone for free, no you won’t because that’s your time and your time is money. I have been to Stevens multiple times with multiple cars and I have to say, I have not been disappointed. He tells you the importance of OEM parts, tells you the parts that need to be changed in conjunction with other parts, the reason for this is Steven knows that other parts are going to go bad real soon since this one did and he is trying to save you money, it’s already taken apart. If you don’t take care of it now, when it goes back in a couple months, he is going to have to charge you the same labor when you could have just taken care of it now with labor already being charged for other part. In my experience with mechanics is they don’t do this, they want you to come back.

I've been going to Steve since 2008, he has always done a great job fixing my 2005 Nissan Frontier and 2009 Prius. He's replaced timing chains, bearings, sensors,... Every time his work has been quality, keeping my cars running phenomenal. He always explains what is needed and has never suggested unneeded work. I will always go to Steve, and I'd recommend him to anyone needing a quality honest mechanic. Nick Martin

Steve was recommended to me by a family friend and he was amazing. I had an issue with my muffler and he took a look at it, called to explain the situation and describe the two repairs he could do, the benefits of each, and how much each would cost. The work was done quickly and the repair was done well. He also went above and beyond to make sure the issue was taken care of and provided an itemized bill explaining exactly what services were rendered and how much each service cost. I’ll definitely be heading back for any future car trouble I have while I’m in the area.

I'm from LA and needed a Pre Purchase Inspection done on a used Ford Raptor. Steve is very knowledgable about Ford trucks especially with known transmission and transfer case issues. The PPI inspection cost around $250, higher than normal but worth it... no one wants to purchase an expensive 6,000 pound paper weight.

Went to Steve’s Auto clinic to get my Nissan checked out - Steve was very fair in his assessment of my car. He suggested I not put any more money into my car and I should just get a new car! He did say he could fix everything but I would be dropping some serious cash into a bottomless pit so why bother. Very fair assessment and list all the issues with my vehicle. The clinic looked like some mad scientist workshop- in a good way. You could tell they were serious about their work. Overall I believe this should be the place you take your vehicle for an honest assessment and know you won’t get ripped off. Also highly recommended on NEXTDOOR......So that is why I checked them out.

We have taken all of our cars to Steve for years. I doubt you'll meet a more honest and helpful mechanic! He will tell you if the repair is more extensive than you originally thought. And he'll tell you when he thinks you would be better off getting another vehicle.

Simply the Best! Straightforward, honest & superior service - been taking all of my vehicles here to Stevens for years and will not go elsewhere. Very knowledgeable and will not try to 'sell' you, highest level of customer service and excellent mechanics!

I have been going to Steven's for several years with my Honda Pilot. He has the highest level of integrity and has informed me on multiple occasions that I don't need service that was recommended by the dealership. I highly recommend.

I’ve been a customer for years. The most honest mechanic I’ve ever known in 50 years of driving. He often talks me out of having work done if he doesn’t feel I need it. If he does work on your car, it’s because you really need it. And the quality of his work is top notch.

He maintains my Mercedes ML-550. Steve runs the most consistent, trustworthy, and professional auto service I have found in 12 moves and 24 years of military service. The facade is not impressive; but this is an honest shop with dealership-quality expertise at a fraction of the cost. His extremely loyal customer base validates my review.

My family and I have been customers of Stevens for many years. In that time, he has never failed to do the right thing, even if the right thing isn't advantageous to his business bottom line. He stands behind his work and his integrity is beyond reproach. The only times I don't use his services are when I have a vehicle getting warranty work done

I have a 2014 Countryman and took it to the dealer for inspection. They told me I needed brakes and rotors front and rear. I couldn't believe it and took it to Steves for a second opinion. Turns out I really didn't need them. I am so glad to find an honest repair facility. I've already told all my friends. Beware of the Mini Cooper dealership in Alexandria.

Top notch service. My wife and I think the world of Steve and his crew. They are always polite and speedy. Steve is exceptional - should you have a hard to understand issue with your vehicle, he goes out of his way to explain the issue and helps you understand your options at all cost levels. Steve does not cut corners, so his prices can be high.

Steven and his team are wonderful. For 4 years, I've used his service and never been unhappy. They give me honest answers, have reasonable prices, and don't try to sell me services for my car that I don't need. Often, I'll take it in for an oil change, and Steven will tell me that's all we need to do if the car is doing fine.

I've been a regular customer of Steve's Auto Clinic for over 5 years now. I do my own regular maintenance on my cars with oil change, filter, etc. But for anything beyond that I only trust Steve and his capable crew to take care of my cars. Every one of Steve's staff is a polite professional and treat you with respect. Steve once loaned me his truck when my car broke down and I had to get a ride to work. That was totally unexpected and something I haven't forgotten. Apparently, Steve trusts me with his car as much as I trust him with mine. Steve treats his customers as friends and strives to take good care of every one of them. He's built his reputation and business on trust and that's a very good long term investment to keep people like me coming back. Thank you Steve!!! UPDATE: Today I spent nearly $4000 in repairs on my car at Steve's Auto Clinic. when I first bought the car from carmax 5 years ago, the first thing I did was I took it to Steve to look over. At the time he told me the Cam seals were leaking, and also that the Subaru Baja is notorious for that sort of problem... but he also told me that the repair could wait until the timing belt needed replacement. So, 5 years later I took the car in for that. My car was having other issues too... the CV boots were leaking, it needed new brakes all around, and one of the cylinder head gaskets was leaking motor oil. Plus, there was a rattling noise from one of the exhaust shields. I knew about these problems going in and knew the repairs at the dealership would have cost me LOT more money. Steve and his crew did the work in 5 days, which is amazing and the quality of the work is outstanding. As I have mentioned before, I do know a little about working on cars and I have never spent this much money on repair, but I also couldn't be happier, knowing that it's done right and my car will be good for at least another 100K miles. Thank you again Steve, I am a loyal customer.

I can't recommend this auto shop highly enough. They are always easy to get a hold of, friendly, they know what they are doing and they are honest about what you really need to do and what you can wait on. After a dealership told me I needed $1200 in repairs I went here on a friend's recommendation and Steve told me what really needed to be done and that was almost 2 years ago and my car is doing fine! Thank you so much to Steve and his team.

I wouldn't take my car anywhere else. Over the years, Steve has actually saved me money. He recognized problems that should be covered by the maker of the car and told me what I needed to do to get it covered. I find him to be very honest, and very hardworking. I'm so glad his shop is near where I live.

My wife's car had a break problem, which I consider a safety hazard. It also leaked fluid on the garage floor. Instead of taking the car to our usual mechanic, who is 10 mile away. I took the car to Steve's Auto Clinic, which is 1.5 miles away. I told Steve about the leak and the right front break problem. two-hours later, I received a call from Steve who regailed me with all of the mechanical defects they could find. The cost he quoted to fix all of the problems was in excess of $10,000.00 I asked him to fix the breaks and replace the water pump. Steve said that the car needs a timing chain service, for $3,000.00 I called the nearest dealer and was quoted $2,380.00 for the same timing chain service. I also asked the dealer about the breaks and water pump. The dealer quote was $1,280.00 ($600 for breaks and $880.00 for the water pump. All together, the dealer quoted $1,480.00 At the conclusion of the Steve's Auto Clinic repair the bill was nearly $1,800.00. This included replacing the break-pads, the break system hydraulic fluids and pistons, a right front break rotor and break pads for the left front and turing the break rotor on the left side. The bill for that portion is $950. Replacing the water pump, changing the gaskets and coolant was $740.00 My conclusion is this: neither Steve nor his mechanics are worth the money they charge. My recommendation is - look elsewhere to have your autos repaired.

Steven's Auto Clinic has worked on four cars for my family and will be my mechanic for as long as I live in this area. He has always been honest about a problem and very willing to explain what is going on. He has never spoken to me using confusing technical language, but has also never made me feel stupid by talking down to me. I would recommend this place to anyone - go there to for solid advice, pleasantly efficient service and value for money. You are not going to find a better shop, period. Don't think about it, just go!

Steven's Auto Clinic is a great place. Steve knows what he talks about. He is very knowledgeable about all makes and models. He seems very honest and his prices are fair considering the expert service. Here is a pleasant and trustworthy mechanic.

I had Steve's repair my brakes. First they charged me too much i.e. the price was high. $375 for 2 rear brake pad installs. Second, they screwed it up and overcharged me to fix. I had to demand money back but still ended up paying $500 for 2 rear brake pads. Terrible. Will never go here again and recommend you don't either. A simple test drive would have revealed the shoddy brake job. I normally do my own brakes but thought I would go for convenience. Learned a great lesson here, "if you want something done right..." One last minor thing, they lacked the attention to detail to plug the engine light back in. It's a minor thing but shows they don't value quality.

Steve is the most knowledgeable and honest mechanic I have encountered. I've heard it said two hardest people to find are an honest lawyer and an honest mechanic. 1 down, 1 to go. I'm not sure if I'll ever find an honest lawyer tho :) Steve knows cars. His 35 dollars estimate fee seems like a lot, but many other places overcharge you during the repairs anyways (like my local Virginia tire and auto shops, and etc). If you want some cheap service where you keep bringing the car back into the shop to save a few buck, look elsewhere, But if you want someone who you can trust with all your family cars, then you don't need to look further. It takes me literally an hour to take my cars to him, but hey, that's how good Steve is. I just wish he was closer to Chantilly!!!
