Found this place in the 80s when I kept my boat in seawaren ( by Woodbridge ) Interestingly I just read where the dimwit took away a star because “boats are rusting in the water “ Historically speaking , we used to be one of the largest ship breaking areas in the world , Daisy sniffing , Birkenstock wearing tree huggers thought it was such a great idea to run industry out of our country . Whereas by the 70’s most Americans had realized the error of their ways and massive efforts had gotten underway to protect our waterway system. Ever seen where they crush ships now? Bangladesh and India, has anyone seen how horrible those shipyards are they cut them up right in the open water even in documentaries you need to see the oil sheen and pollution in the water , Any of those geniuses ever think it’s all one big toilet ? All water runs together at some point Did they think that sending industry off to other countries that have no regulations was a good idea? Same thing in the 90s when we ran free on this country Dupont closed plants that had great jobs and careers , Staunton Virginia is one of them So let’s say you ship all free on production in Mexico do you think they care with mercury gets dumped into the Rio Grande? People need to look at the bigger picture right now we’re undergoing we’re DEF as we added every diesel truck in America. Has anybody done any studies? Does that really offset the emissions compared to the emissions of billions of plastic bottles being made to produce it? Enjoy the shipyard it’s a great piece of history Further down towards Ari and Bay you could see the wooden chips that were actually ran up onto the beach and left from the 1800s The large wooden stringers and keels are still visible at low tide . We made amazing progress growing up in the 70s and 80s and going out on the boat. Every chance I could I never saw a whale offered the Jersey coast or New York coast Of course we hunted them to extinction because we changed look at what we see now. What would happen if we had kept the industry in this country and cleaned it up versus just pushing the problem into a closet where it’s still polluting and even worse, they have no regulations at all . Food for thought

Launch your kayak from Carteret boat launch and just paddle across the Kill. Watch out for ships, boats, and jet skis when you cross the channel.

This “maritime decay” is 100% genuine Americana.. where else do they park wrecks in one of the world’s largest revenue-generating waterways.. Staten Island is the ultimate American urban wasteland.. totally wasted and forsaken waterfront property that would be priceless anywhere else. If you want something ruined.. bring it to Staten Island…

This place could be soo cool. Unfortunately the best viewing areas are through a private property. You can drive north and park next to the small cemetery to take a peak. It looked great at sundown.

Cool place, I parked near the cemetery sign. Walked past the private property sign, I don’t recommend staying for long to take photos. Respect the property, don’t leave anything behind. Cool experience, hope it stays around a while longer.

Twilight trip on a winter day. Took the trail from Sleigh Family Graveyard / Blazing Star Cemetery

Super cool place! The cemetery nearby is also an amazing find. Some notes- Following a GPS will lead you to a wall that will make you think it’s blocked off. Go a little north of there to get in. I had to walk past a private property sign to get a good view but I told the guy there I was here for the boats and he waved me past. If you plan on visiting I would be respectful of the fact that it’s private by not bringing a large group.

ATLAS OBSCURA FIND! (Minus 1 star because rotting ships are rusting in the water😭) This is such a bizarre find! It used to belong to John Witte, who owned this marine scrapyard from 1930-1980. At its peak, there were over 400 ships in this “accidental marine museum.” Now there’s about 100! I recommend parking near Blazing Star Cemetery.

Sits in a sandbar off the Arthur Kill shipping channel.Easiest entrance by foot is thru adjacent Blazing Star cemetery and down a thorny path. Best time to go is March/April or October/November and wear boots being it is marshy grassland. I even found a football and I took it to the house …

안협소 유튜브에 나온 배의 묘지. 뉴욕 주에 있음. 수백개의 배가 널부러져 있고 100년 이상 지난 것들이라고 함. 으스스하고 멋진 곳. 유령도 나타난다고.

This location isn't really open to the public, but there weren't any "no trespassing" signs or anyone to ask us to leave. Be respectful. The land is thick with brush and very marshy. A lot of amazing nautical history here. Military vessels from WWII, vintage ferries, wooden paddlewheels, tugboats, cranes and more. The boats sit silently rusting away, some half-submerged with scurrying birds and the occasional industrial barge being the only activity. It is a serene meditative place -- some local folklore says it is haunted and there are lights and sounds at night.

Really cool with a drone, park near the cemetery and go through it towards the shore.

To get there you have to go through a couple of perforated chain link fences. But it's not a big effort and if you then go through the muddy grass landscape to the shore you will be rewarded with a great view of the ship graveyard. I would recommend wearing rubber boots regardless of the weather.
