What clients say about Colesville Nursery Inc in Ashland (VA)

I have to say that this is my favorite nursery in the Richmond metro area. They have the largest selection in the area including many rare and unusual plants. I also love the online inventory. A very useful tool for a plant collector as myself. My journey in gardening certainly would less interesting without this place. The folks in the garden center are very friendly and informative. Over the years Lauren has answered my many questions. She is a wealth of knowledge. From aphid treatment to soil amendments to pronouncing the Latin names she knows it all. Sherri also has helped me many times. Recently I had a question about a water wand and she hit it out the park. She always is upbeat and I left with a high five. Really made my day. Also I want to thank Sammy in the office for helping me with a large order last fall. I'm sure the amount of work he did to complete the my order required a high attention to detail and fantastic customer service skill. Zack, Kat and the rest of the yard crew always ask if I need help and I sometimes need a strong back to help load up and they jump right in. I remember going to colesville many years ago for the first time. I didn't know anything. I'm very thankful that I found this place. I look forward to many more years of exploring this wonderful thing we call gardening with these folks and this place.

Huge selection of most any shrub, flower, etc. They were the only supplier in the Richmond area that had the shrubs we needed.

Great selection and staff. Kyle and team went above and beyond to help me get a perfect Redpointe for my yard! Cant wait to watch it grow!

Beautiful nursery with outstanding customer service... drove 2 hours to get here and was not disappointed. Website depicted the specific tree I was looking for, and the nursery had 10 to pick from... you won't be disappointed.

Very friendly staff and TONS of great plants reasonably priced. Inventory is a little overwhelming and allow for time to explore if you are not going for something specific.

All of the products are really high quality. The level of organization really sets this nursery apart from everywhere else. You can see exactly what plants you want to buy on their website and where it is exactly located on their massive property. But really, the employees are what makes this place so special. Each and every employee I've ever spoken with has been amazingly kind and helpful. I won't go anywhere else anymore.

1/3/25 Visited to look at evergreen selection for upcoming project. Multiple sizes available for each of the 2 evergreen varieties that I was after. The first extremely helpful staff member that I spoke with was working in the tents, and offered to stop her work to show me additional evergreen options to consider. The second staff member was super pleasant, and working on prepping bushes and trees for the cold weather, he alerted me on what he was doing, and made sure that he and I did not get too close at times, so I would not get any spray drift. The third staff member at the checkout was very kind and made sure I was aware of a sale on the pansies that I was buying. I bought a few more (planted all as soon as I got home). These were the best looking pansies that I had seen at any garden center in recent weeks, and now my planters will look good into the spring. Colesville is where I have gotten most all of my shrubs in recent years. They are easily my first and best choice in Hanover.

Outstanding selection of healthy plants. But lets be clear. This is a working nursery/farm. NOT an orange/blue box store or retail nursery. It is geared to landscape professionals but also sells retail. Do not expect a typical retail interface. IF you need lots of hand holding, this is not the place for you. If you love plants and love to pick out very specific varieties, Colesville nursery is for you. And they have excellent prices, too! I spoke with three different employees and all three were friendly and helpful. Great people work here. When you arrive you MUST pickup a clipboard that includes an order sheet and a map of the nursery. This nursery covers many acres. You drive around to the plant location where your plants you want are located. You select your plant, write down the plant information on your clipboard, and put the plant in your vehicle. A car will work, but a pickup truck, van or SUV would be better. Depends on how large and how many plants you intend to buy. Drive back to the office/store and walk in with your clipboard and order sheet. Leave your plants in the vehicle. Some tips. 1. Download the list of available plants from their website to your cell phone. It will tell you the name, size, location and price of the plants. The plant location is CRITICAL to finding the plants you want. Trust me, you don't want to walk around through all the green houses and other locations looking for your plants. KNOW THE PLANT LOCATION. 2. Do your homework. Arrive with a list of the plants you want to purchase. Select backups in case they have sold out of your first choice. Know what size you want/need. Plants are often located in different areas based on plant size. 3. Be prepared to get dirty/dusty. Be prepared to load your own plants. But they will try to find someone to assist if you need it. Remember, this is a working nursery/farm; not a retail store. Consider bringing small trash bags or tubs (I used small cement mixing tubs) to contain dirt and water from the containers. 4. Have fun hunting for your plants! Signage and directions are not the best. I drove around quite a bit trying to find the correct location for one of my plants. Incredible selection of healthy annuals, perennials, shrubs and trees. Considering the tens of thousands of plants, I was impressed that almost every plant was health and in good shape. Plants are well taken care of. I was told most of their plants are grown there or on their farm. Some are brought in from other growers, but most are grown at this family run nursery. And they have a great selection of large ceramic planters in all shapes and sizes. A little pricey but probably cheaper than most places. I think I am going back for a couple after discussing with the boss. ;-) Fertilizer and soil amendment selection was very good and reasonably priced. SUPPORT YOUR LOCAL BUSINESS

I planted some berry covered winterberry shrubs and read I needed a male for them to produce again. Trees of Fredericksburg suggested Colesville. I’m new to the area but took the jaunt down to pick me up a shrub. The nursery is something that I have never experienced before. I parked between the two buildings (garden shop & main building I assumed.). I took a walk to see what they had on display. After about 1/2 way around the tents a lady asked how I was doing. She walked me over to where she thought the shrub would be. Not there, she got on her walkie-talkie and got the location…on the other side of the property. I drove toward the area and got a man in a golf cart who slowed down and looked at me suspiciously. I confirmed the location and glad I did. He was a huge help, corrected me and sent me on my way. What a sight to see. The biggest working nursery I have ever seen. Trucks, flat beds, UTV, driving all around picking up plants. At this point I feel over my head coming to pick up a plant. I find my shrubs and there are ribbons on some. I wasn’t for sure if that was an I.d. to reserve or who to credit for the plant. I grab a tall healthy plant and take it back to the main building. As I unload a nice fella came over to tell me just to leave it. Then I ask what the ribbon meant. Of course it’s a tag for a reservation. I offer to take it back and get another. He kindly offered to go look for the paperwork on it. No paperwork for this shrub providentially and I can purchase it!!! The trip was quite intimidating for someone like me. I appreciated all the friendly faces driving around and all the help I received from the kind men and women. I’m pretty sure I’m going to call next time about the blue dwarf irises I want and see how to reserve and pick them up. But thank you everyone for your help and kindness today.

Great selection of natives and other unique and interesting plants, probably the biggest in the area that I've found so far. The lady who checked us out was also incredibly kind and made the entire shopping experience a pleasure. Will definitely be back here. Thank you!

We came for their 50th Anniversary sale and were blown away by the selection and helpfulness! Christy was especially helpful when it came to the roses. I love that they have a whole section for natives too. 30 mins north of RVA and it’s well worth the drive! We’ll be back!

We were looking for large privacy trees. I was telling my friend that I was going to go to Cross Creek Nursery and she recommended Colesville instead, believing them to have a larger selection of trees andvpossibly at a better price. I looked them up online and saw they were running a sale of 20% that weekend. We went and bought 8 trees, planted them, then realized we needed 8 more. We called them and they honored the discount and held them for sever days until we could get back there to pick them up. We were very pleased by the selection and staff friendliness. We will definitely be there again and have already recommended them to others!

This was my first and will be my last visit to Colesville Nursery. While they have an impressive selection, the staff was beyond rude and unpleasant. When we mentioned that we were new to the area, and asked if they knew where to look for an item they did not stock, the response was a shrug and “I dunno…the internet” while staring at the counter. I’m pleased to say we will never return to this dumpster fire.

Very friendly and helpful staff. Be sure to check in and get a clipboard and instructions! Large variety of plants and trees. Check online to confirm your selection is in stock, or you can also pre-order. Some pottery and statues are also available. Nice clean restrooms available. I purchased some mint!

I run a landscaping company and to say I despise coming to this nursery is an understatement. Unfortunately, my designer doesn’t have a truck and I get stuck picking up from here. My issues stem from the rude, almost better than thou, office staff; the mind boggling set up that is their “yard” which only makes sense to them; and the fact that when we place an order for pickup, nothing is pulled! It’s supposed to be simple like at every other nurseries , call and place and order, tell them what day you’re picking up, then when you arrive it’s all right there waiting for you! No, why would you do that, first you have me go to GL70 to get a tree then VR20 to get a different tree then P4 for plants but not this end of P4 drive around to the other end. Everything here is just frustrating. From the ridiculously narrow road leading into the place to the fact that plant warranties are only good if you tarp them. 2 stars simply because you have a lot of plants Also, businesses that respond to bad reviews, don’t you have better things to do than sit at your computer and bite back at people?

There are a ton of nurseries to choose from and this one didn't give me good feels about choosing plants. I have a new home with a huge garden and was excited to shop. Yes, I would have benefited from advice but was told to "just read the signs". Everyone was rushed when I talked to them both in the garden and at the desk. The woman who checked me out was truly unpleasant. I prefer a smaller, more personal experience. Don't forget about the little guys.

Great garden nursery. The place is huge, with large selections of trees, evergreens, bushes, perinenals both sun and shade. All plants in good health. Drive your vehicle around the aisles, to far to walk. Don't forget to stop in the office first to get your buyers sheet.

Headed over from Madison to pick up two bushes for my company today. Great plants and friendly staff. Was guided in the loading yard by an exceptionally helpful, friendly, might I add absolutely beautiful and chipper young lady who had obviously been working hard before I pulled up. Great experience. Wishing they were closer to Brightwood.

Very unprofessional and bad business. Karen made sure to remind me how busy she was after I called her and emailed her to buy Virginia Native flowers for a Wild Life project. I asked for her to help me find these Virginia native flowers. And have her dimensions of my garden boxes. Hoping that she had some knowledge of how many I should get and what could grow next to each other. Again…. I was reminded how busy she was. Thanks Karen. We will take our business elsewhere.

I've been to numerous nurseries and Colesville is by far the best. They have a huge selection and an incredibly knowledgeable staff. Over the years, I purchased 100's of plants/trees from them and they have always been very high quality. I've maybe lost 4 plants total, and that was most likely due to the soil condition where I planted them, not the plant itself. I don't exclusively shop at Colesville, but they are always the first place I look when adding to my own landscaping or design a new landscape for someone else. They have earn my business and my respect everytime I visit them.

The only place to go for your landscaping and gardening needs (wants). EVERYONE who is associated with the Nursery is helpful, nice and greets you with a smile (I swear). They have everything you can think of. It’s not just a shopping for plants experience, it is a visual adventure, too!

Colesville Nursery and in particular, Karen, went so far above and beyond our expectations with their care and service during our purchase of a memorial tree. They waived fees, included a card, included fertilizer, and even went so far as planting the tree for the recipients!! All at no additional cost to help us stay within our budget limits. Their kind, personalized service was so much more than I was expecting and I will definitely be recommending their nursery to everyone I know!!! THANK YOU!!!!

I have been a customer here for several years and have always received the best service. I moved out of the area 4 yrs ago but still make a point to stop in to/from visiting Richmond. There really is no garden center in the area that even begins to compare to the selection, and I've purchased from them all in my 30+ years of gardening. Their iris selection - amazing!
