What clients say about Fort Totten Solid Waste Disposal Transfer Station in Washington (DC)

The crew that was working on January 10, 2026 around 12 PM was the most pleasant group of DC government workers I've ever encountered and they made a chore less painful shout out to all the guys that were helping me. also, something to maybe put on the website in big letters. Trailers are not accepted. I tried to tow a trailer on the back of my Jeep and ended up having a transfer everything from the trailer to inside the Jeep.

I took 2 bulk items to the dump that were to large for the trash cans but didn't feel large enough to schedule a bulk pick up. I also needed to get rid of them sooner than bulk pick up can usually be scheduled. The staff was very polite and accommodating and the process was seamless.

I just dropped.trashwaste disposal station, the employees were extremely friendly, helpful with the directions. It was an smooth and easy trash drop. A stressless quick end to an otherwise tedious chore.

Every time we go they hassle us. They mansplain and are quite frankly condescending and nasty. Usually it’s the dark skinned skinny guy and the stocky light skinned guy. They have been rude and authoritarian. We pay our taxes to use this facility so we will continue to go. But, it’s the last place I really want to go to because I have to brace myself for the negativity each time. Hopefully, they work on themselves and improve their tone towards “us.”

It's been a long time since I dump here. I did remember the site improved with it's appearance, but with recent happenings . Do dc residents pay a fee to dump bulk trash or no?

Employees are usually friendly and helpful. It is clean and efficient. Come early...if you can. I try to be here abt 30min b4 opening and I am usually first in line.

I had not been to the Ft. Totten Waste Transfer Station since it’s recent renovation and I have to say that the experience is much improvéd. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Will dump here again soon.

Manager name Jose Serenaa- blocked me from dumping fencing material from my house after replacing broken fence. But the guy next to me was dumping fencing as well. He tells me I’m not allowed because it’s construction material. When every time I visit this place people are dumping everything. What a joke, typical dc tax players pay and people like Jose thinks he owns the dumping station. I guess he wanted money to dump.

So smooth! Many cars were already lined up but the staff was so helpful orienting and clearing the queue.

I never thought I would leave a review on the internet for a (literal) dump, but I had such a great experience! Everyone was incredibly kind - even offering to help me unload my sofa. It's surprisingly clean and not smelly and just an overall efficient operation.

As always, nice, competent people despite doing a nasty job. Today I was returning license plates. The man checking IDs asked what I had and took them from me himself, saving me from driving through the collection lanes.

Super efficient! Just follow the staff who wave you in when you arrive. They asked what items I had (metals go in a separate place) and then pointed me to a parking spot where I tossed my stuff. There was no wait on a Wednesday afternoon.

You would think a municipal dump in a major metro would be a horrible place… SUPRISE. It’s super easy, the employees are helpful and nice. Excellent operation.

If you have anything that you want to dispose of and have a vehicle that will hold said item. You can easily get rid of it at the Fort Totten solid waste disposal facility. All you need is a DC drivers license and some patience to wait for your turn. Check their hours because they are different but they are open on Saturday.

Went on a Saturday late morning to e-cycle old electronics, only my second time here. Unlike my first visit in 2018, there was no line to get in. There was also more assistance from staff in handling items. Staff at entrance checked my DC driver’s license and directed me to a drop off point. When I pulled up, staff wheeled a shopping cart to the trunk of my car to receive my items. I was in and out in less than five minutes. Easy peasy. Grateful DC makes it so convenient to dispose of electronics/ hazardous waste in a safe manner. My only suggestion is that DPW should pro-actively publicize the service so that more people use it.

Staff are friendly here. During the tiime i visit, there is a line here but it is not a long wait.

It's a good place for city residents to dump their bulk trash that cannot wait to be scheduled for pickup. The employees are super nice. I believe it further helps keep the city clean. Look at their website for list of acceptable trash and trucks/cars allowed.

This was a very positive experience. We showed up with a few things to throw away, like a vacuum and a bike, but since we were in a borrowed work truck we were denied entry. The guy behind us asked if the bike and vacuum worked and he took them. The guy running the front didn't seem to care as long as a work truck didn't enter. All very reasonable and glad to be around helpful people.

Though there is a line, but the people who work there are very friendly and efficient. My wait was about half an hour on Saturday 2pm. When I left, the time already passed their closet time at 3pm but they are still working over time.

The Fort Totten Trash Transfer Station is the largest dumpsite run by the city. It's located in NE D.C. near Catholic University alongside railroad tracks. The station itself is large and from my opinion, efficiently run. Despite lines, they get you in and out quickly. One of the managers, Jose, was very helpful and friendly. One thing to note is that they don't take dirt or cement blocks. They also take and give compost at this location.

Today was hard. They had a very long line to get in. It took us an hour and half. When we got inside, the trash was mountainous. A section was blocked off so the amount of cars or trucks were very few who could dump their stuff. Also the space to turn around was smaller. So the lot guy was doing his best to get folks in the tight space. I understand that. They haven't been open long so things haven't caught up yet.

The employees here are so nice and helpful. I went for the first time today and was dreading it. Now I'm sorry I haven't taken advantage of this wonderful opportunity for recycling and safe handling sooner. The employees here are really first rate!! They made such a difference in this experience.

Very good experience, you have to be DC resident to drop your trash there. Driver's ID required has to be DC license. Get ready to spend 35 to 45 minutes in the line before you reach the dump area. Dump area is Muddy and wet and smelly make sure you have extra foot mat or you can use cardboard or newspaper when you get back in the car.

Get there early. Arrived later in the day around 1:30 to shred 1 bag and the back up of cars was about 30-40 minute wait. Wish an express line could be in place for shredding. We only drive up and dump into trash can for the most part. I can understand the bulk dumping taking longer. Overall employees were great and efficient.

I've gone here several times for Saturday special trash drop off (specifically electronics & small appliances). Employees are friendly & helpful. I believe this facilility is only open Saturday mornings until around 2 or 3 pm. Check dc.gov website for exact hours. As of February 2018 they DO accept paint & construction debris. I usually go before 10:30 am Sat morning & have never had to wait. However got there a little after 11 am & waited in line about 10-15 minutes. Have your DC drivers license or DC resident ID ready. You MUST be a DC resident to use this facility.

This is a city dump. I used it to get rid of some construction material after some home renovations. The entire process was very nice, fast, and efficient. They also do an amazing job of keeping the smell down. Impressive. However, they do have limited hours and you should always check that whatever you are dumping is allowed, which can change depending on the day (e.g., hazardous wastes on Saturday only). Less known, they provide free compost to DC residents.
