What clients say about Burke Rehabilitation Hospital in White Plains (NY)

Burke is the best place for all kinds of therapy. The men and women that work in physical and occupational therapy are amazing. They have a lot of patience and compassion for their patients. Madison and Dana helped me so much. I highly recommend them. Keep up the good work. The nurses and nurses aide are wonderful. They were always willing to help when I called them. I’m sorry to say this but your meals are not good, no flavor. When I was there in 2021 the food was great.

Finished 20 sessions for hip pain with PT Sarah Smith. It worked. Sarah is competent, punctual, professional & a nice person. She's younger than I expected but mature, and I felt comfortable. I almost gave up waiting for Burke (took over 2 months on waitlist), but it was worth the wait. The facilities are nice and the PT is one-on-one. Highly recommend.

We loved the Rehab part. The communication between the doctors and the patient advocate as well as a social worker with less than adequate.

I had many therapy sessions with Joel. He is an amazing person and therapist. In just a few months I was able to feel so much stronger and steadier. Joel made the sessions enjoyable and knew how to explain each exercise so that I could do each one properly. I felt very secure in knowing he was such an experienced and conscientious therapist. He encouraged me to continue working at home for long term benefits and also suggested joining the gym at Burke, which I am considering. A shout out as well to the front staff. They were warm and most helpful. Connie Schneidman

My mother was at Burke for 18 days recovering from back surgery. She was very well taken care of, the staff at Burke know what they are doing. At 85 years old and having had several medical complications at the hospital post surgery, this was not an easy or straight forward case. My sister and I had many concerns to share with the Burke staff who listened and communicated that they could handle all of it. We were able to talk with the case workers, the nursing staff and the PT practitioners to hear about my mom’s progress and concerns. Burke is clean, safe and full of people that make visitors feel welcomed. They make you feel confident that they are doing their best for your loved one.

From the moment I arrived at Burke until discharge the staff were phenomenal. The 1 North staff were wonderful. They were attentive to my needs and worked with me so that my rehab experience was the best it could be. The PT/OT Staff were great as well, they listened to my concerns and worked with me to achieve my goals. Even the elevator operator Richard was always pleasant, happy to help and was someone to look forward to seeing each day. I would highly recommend Burke to anyone that needs extensive rehabilitation after an injury or illness. Thank you all!

A total of 4 members of our family-and-friends circle have had the most positive experiences at Burke over the past ten years. The admissions process is very straightforward & courteous. The expert physical therapists and the facilities are exceptional. The support center for family caregivers is excellent. As a family, we are very grateful to Burke for enabling our loved ones to be their strongest and to go back to leading their independent lives after surgery. Thank you!

My father was here twice, first time was good when he was easily rehabilitated. Second time was the real test, they had him walking at the beginning and then slowed down with the rehab. They weren’t patient with the “patient” and had him sent to a restorative therapy. Nowhere near home, not that Burke is but we gave them a chance considering first time. The restorative therapy center was “northwestchester restorative therapy” and I’d give them 0 star. Most of the residence are on a hospice amount of drugs. Family member became bedridden and on the day the we tried to bring him to see his doctor they said he was on lift now and couldn’t go. I blame Burke for rushing my father out and forcing us to bring him to a de”restorative” therapy. He now has a feeding tube, we were told by northwestChester restorative therapy “you can’t take care of him” even though we definitely could’ve back then, more so then now. The whole time it was going backwards. (It was actually at burke that he started to get a bed rest wound, when he was supposed to be doing therapy. The therapist and doctors take advantage of the families sympathy and says we will give him morphine to easy the pain, the same drug used when shot in combat. I understand a broken hip is painful, but getting better wont feel good) If you could imagine the regret I have on not being able to see hindsight and knowing leaving rehab without medical advice would’ve been better off probably. But then again so many high dose pills and such that if you take them out your family member will go into dangerous levels of withdrawal. For some reason they let him withdrawal at northwest Chester restorative therapy. And the doctor lizzy or Izzy wanted to lie and say he wasn’t withdrawing. Amazing how regular people will back up something so corrupt.

I am very disappointed in the customer service that has been provided by Burke staff. I have called and left messages since Friday (on the admission line which is whom I am looking for) and they have not yet called me back. Today, I finally spoke to someone (I think the operator) and they said maybe I was leaving the voicemail elsewhere. Nope, the voicemail message said it was the admission line and to leave a message. I was trying to figure out the “real reason” my mother was denied acceptance to Burke instead of just a generic answer and was transferred to a nice man in the screening department. He assured me he would message the clinical team as I had questions as to better understand why they feel my mother, who had major back surgery and then was immediately diagnosed with stage 4 cancer, did not meet their “high standards” for admissions. The reason I received was she was “too high functioning mobility.” Here is the thing, she isn’t! She can barely do anything and needs intensive PT and OT (she can’t even open a piece of mail or her water bottle. She has been medically de-conditioned due to not receiving the proper PT after her major back surgery in July and then immediately getting chemo for five months. Her ability to get better is being hindered by the acute rehabs who will not speak to the family members to get a better understanding of the picture. My mother needs help and she raved about Burke after her two knee surgeries and now they won’t even return a call. How ill do I need to make my mother to get someone to listen and understand the help she so desperately needs to get better and fully recover. How can she return home when no one is willing help her or listen to us? Don’t tell family members you are gong to call back and never do.

My father had a 4 week daily therapy with Alyssa for Parkinson”s and she has made such a huge impact on him. Not just physically but mentally prepared him with tools to increase his mobility and strength. As a daughter to see such a change was incredible and I am so grateful for her and Burke for the care they provide.

5-Star Review — Dr. Sarah Smith (Burke Rehabilitation Center, White Plains NY) I am incredibly grateful for the care and expertise of Dr. Sarah Smith at Burke Rehabilitation Center in White Plains. From my very first session, she has been patient, supportive, and highly knowledgeable — truly exceptional in every aspect of physical rehabilitation. Dr. Smith took the time to understand my complex condition, listen to my concerns, and create a customized treatment plan that addressed my individual needs. Her attention to detail, clear explanations, and encouragement have helped me progress further than I ever expected. Every session leaves me feeling stronger, more confident, and truly cared for. Her professionalism is matched equally by her kindness and genuine dedication to her patients’ well-being. I always feel respected, motivated, and supported. Burke Rehabilitation Center is fortunate to have someone as skilled, compassionate, and committed as Dr. Smith. If you are looking for a physical therapist who not only delivers real results but makes the journey positive and empowering, I cannot recommend Dr. Sarah Smith highly enough. She has made a meaningful difference in my recovery, and I am deeply thankful for her care. Mike C

Burke Rehabilitation Center has been a true blessing for my family. From the moment my mother was admitted after her stroke earlier this year, the entire team medical, therapy, administrative, and support staff treated her with compassion, patience, and genuine dedication. She spent three weeks as an inpatient ( My mother loved the food, therapists, doctors, team, & facility) and nearly seven months as an outpatient at the Executive Boulevard location (Our therapists Julie & Jessica were exceptional), and the progress she made was nothing short of remarkable. Every therapist took the time to understand her specific needs, her cognition, communication challenges, and personality. They pushed her when she needed it and protected her when she was vulnerable. A special thank you to Kathy and Scott, whose leadership, communication, and kindness helped guide us through one of the most difficult experiences of our lives. Their professionalism and deep commitment to patient care set the tone for the entire facility. Burke became family to us. My mother needs rehab again and we didn’t even consider anywhere else because we trust Burke with her healing and safety,. If you have a loved one recovering from a stroke, brain injury, or serious medical event, I cannot recommend Burke Rehabilitation Center enough. They changed our lives. Also Burke also considers the family needs as the family caregiver center suite was such a support. As your family member is in therapy sessions you have a quiet tranquil space to decompress and realign with an onsite therapist if needed. Thank you Burke ??

On the day of my appointment at Burke Rehabilitation Center, I had already made multiple phone calls in advance and clearly communicated that my treatment was related to a Workers’ Compensation case. I confirmed this information prior to scheduling and attending the appointment. Upon arrival, the front desk staff informed me that I would not be seen unless I provided a referral or supporting documentation related to my physical therapy. Despite explaining that this information had already been reviewed before my visit, I was told I could not proceed without it. After going back and forth for several minutes, I returned to my vehicle to retrieve the documents and provided them to the staff. Even after presenting the required paperwork, I was told that unless payment was made immediately, or unless another party authorized coverage at that moment, I would still not be seen. I explained that I was recovering from post-operative surgery for a fractured hand with plates and screws inserted, and that I was currently unable to open or close my hand. My priority was receiving medically necessary rehabilitation—not dealing with preventable administrative barriers. This experience was extremely unpleasant and demonstrated a troubling lack of professionalism. The staff’s approach placed financial concerns above patient care, creating unnecessary stress during a vulnerable recovery period. For a facility as sophisticated, reputable, and well-known as Burke Rehabilitation Center, operating in this manner is both unethical and unacceptable. Placing monetary issues above a patient’s immediate medical needs—especially when Workers’ Compensation coverage had already been communicated and I was willing to pay out-of-pocket if necessary—reflects a serious failure in patient-centered care. Such conduct does not align with the standards of compassion, integrity, and service that healthcare institutions in this country are expected to uphold. It is, quite frankly, unpatriotic to deny rehabilitation support to an injured worker who has done everything required to seek treatment. Ultimately, I was told I would need to schedule a future appointment unless payment was made upfront, despite providing documentation and communicating my circumstances clearly. This created an unnecessary and avoidable hardship for someone in urgent need of post-operative rehabilitation services.

Burke Rehabilitation Hospital offers the BEST rehab by far! The PT and OT departments are staffed with highly-trained professionals who delivered the most amazing therapy. Their thoughtful approach and tailor-made exercises helped her get on the road to recovery. The skilled nursing care she received was also tremendous. Thank you, Burke Rehab, for all of the wonderful care!

This was the best physical therapy environment I have experienced. There is such a wide range of injuries that PT can address it’s impossible to speak to all of them — mine was not the most serious, but was treated with intelligence, patience and care. My trainer was wonderful. The physical space comfortable and beautiful. A remarkable place to work through injury.

My mother spent three weeks at Burke Rehabilitation Center, and I can honestly say the experience exceeded every expectation we had. The staff there is nothing short of amazing — incredibly attentive, compassionate, and professional. What stood out the most was how they constantly encouraged her and pushed her to give her best every single day. Rehabilitation can be challenging, but the way the team motivated her and celebrated her progress made all the difference. They treated her with dignity and respect while making sure she stayed focused on getting stronger. I’m deeply grateful for the care she received and the support they gave both her and our family.

I had a fantastic recovery working with physical therapists at Burke Hospital’s Outpatient center. I came in barely walking with serious back pain and left walking upright and briskly. A single therapist gave me 100% of her attention for 50 minutes, gave me great exercises to do at home and helped ensure I did them safely during my visit. I highly recommend Burke.

The Physical Therapy team at Burke under the Direction of Sandra Angelou is beyond Amazing. Karl, Nicole and Sue just to name a few of the therapists are remarkable individuals. I had open heart surgery my recovery was phenomenal and I owe it all to this fabulous group of dedicated, kind Individuals who truly got me back up on feet in less than 3 months and back to work as if I never had the surgery. Not only did they provide me with the best physical therapy the emotional support was outstanding. Thank you from the bottom of my heart I will always be forever grateful. The nursing staff also needs to be highly commended also such a kind and dedicated group of professionals. To Paula and Charlene God bless you always.

My father-in-law was a patient at Burke for a traumatic brain injury, he spent nearly a month at the campus in White Plains and it saved his life. The care provided and rehabilitation was second to none. The nurses were able to challenge him to improve, yet also care for him when it mattered most. This is an incredible facility with incredible people that stand behind it. When it mattered most Burke was there to help.

My father-in-law has been here for over a week now, and the care has been tremendous. He loves everyone, everything, and especially the food. They have a vending machine for meals in between regular meal times--try the Thai noodles! I've had it several times now. But as for the care, everyone from housekeeping to maintenance, to the clinical staff on the units, PT, social services, and just everyone throughout the property has been superb. James of 1 West is the BEST with a capital B. We have so enjoyed his company, and his team of nurses are as good as they come. They are eager to help, talented, and genuinely care about you and your condition. The staff can be seen smiling in the hallways, which is always a great sign. My father-in-law says he wishes he could come here on vacation, and likened it to a resort! I said to him, I wholeheartedly agree! You will be under EXCELLENT care if you decide to come to Burke...but be ready to work! You're here to get healthy, and they will get you on your way post-haste with their talent, love, and care. Burke is an absolute gem among our area's rehab options; it is a real privilege to come here!

My grandmother spent two weeks at Burke Rehabilitation Center for inpatient physical and occupational therapy, and the experience was outstanding from start to finish. The transition from the hospital to Burke was handled seamlessly, making a potentially stressful time much easier on our family. Her room was exceptional, spacious, clean, and comfortable. The entire facility, including the beautiful and well kept grounds, was spotless and serene. Burke’s staff kept her engaged in physical and occupational therapy sessions three to four times a day, which played a major role in her quick recovery. She genuinely enjoyed the meals provided and had no complaints about the food. There is also a food court available for both patients and visitors, which was a thoughtful addition for family members spending time on site. Visiting was made even better thanks to the designated area called the Commons, where families are welcomed. The facility also has expansive outdoor grounds with grassy areas, benches, and other seating where you can enjoy time in the sun during visits. These outdoor spaces made every trip to see her more peaceful and pleasant. What stood out most was the warmth of the staff. Every single person we passed in the hall greeted us with kindness. The atmosphere is friendly, positive, and uplifting. This is truly a top tier facility that we will always recognize as the best we have ever visited. I would recommend Burke Rehabilitation to anyone looking for high quality rehabilitative care for their loved ones.

My mom recently had the privilege of receiving care at Burke Rehabilitation Hospital and I cannot speak highly enough of our experience. From the moment she arrived, she was greeted with warmth and compassion by the staff, who made her feel like a valued individual. The facility itself is top-notch, with state-of-the-art equipment and facilities that are clean and well-maintained. The therapists at Burke are truly exceptional. They are not only highly skilled and knowledgeable in their respective fields, but they are also caring and attentive to each patient's unique needs. They took the time to listen to me and my mom, understand her goals, and develop a personalized treatment plan that grateful for her recovery’s. The nurses, and staff work with passion and dedication to support patients in their recovery journey. I highly recommend Burke for anyone in need of rehabilitation services. Thank you, Burke, for your exceptional care and support.

When my husband arrived he was in a room with a white man that had dementia or alzheimers believing he was still a lawyer going to court...he was very verbal and I didn't like the way he was treated...they laughed at him alot and the way he yelled that he was being abused made you question was it dementia...anyway while sharing the room it was never an issue with time..they never questioned me about leaving because of the ruckus the roommate created..as soon as they moved him and got a Jamaican made in their I was asked to leave mind you the entire staff of the hospital is foreign and my husband would always tell me that the staff was only consistent with checking on him because I was there..after I left his meds were due at 9:00 pm and he told me he didn't get them until 11:30 pm..anyway the hospital was clean compared to most rehabs... staff maybe a lot lazy...food was a hit or miss..Alex the nurse was very nice and the physical therapy girl worked my husband...which is good..so for the most part nice facility...workers seemed lazy..and the nurses station was always empty.

There is a reason Burke is rated among the top physical rehabilitation facilities in the country — the therapists. As an orthopaedic patient I participated in 22-26 sessions each week, most of these were private sessions. For the first week I benefitted from working with a number of different therapists and then was assigned one therapist for the remainder of my stay. I think this process ensures the best possible outcome for the patient. The therapists at Burke are patient- focussed, passionate, and collaborative. The nursing team- as in all institutions today-is stretched. Most all are completely dedicated and compassionate. We need to applaud and support our nurses! The MD’s who cared for me were great diagnosticians, vigilant and present at all hours. I felt safe and well cared for. Progess report: I threw away my cane at 6 weeks. Thank you— Team Burke- for giving me my life back.

Burke Rehabilitation Hospital is the standard by which all rehabilitation hospitals should adhere. Massive grounds, 100 year old buildings, spotless, shining interiors, and an ample, caring, professional staff. Rehab sessions are intense and really priceless. I have had experience with rehab centers with friends and family many times in the past; I wish I had known about Burke at the time. Free parking. Grade A experience.

Burke Rehabilitation Hospital is one of the finest hospitals for people recovering from orthopedic snd neurological illnesses. They have a great team of doctors as well as physical and occupational therapists who truly love helping their patients recover from their ailments. About ten years ago I spent two weeks at Burke after having double knee replacement surgery and I have been forever grateful to their extraordinary staff. I also continued to go to Burke’s outpatient facilities until I was discharged and able to return to work and my active lifestyle! More recently I visited a patient who was getting the same exceptional care I received a decade ago!
