What clients say about New Jersey Rock Gym in Fairfield Township (NJ)
-
For context, I am an intermediate climber that has been a regular at NJRG for about 3 years. I started climbing at this gym at the end of 2022. I enjoyed the sets a lot as a new climber and would climb 3-4 days a week for about a year and a half, and met a lot great people during this time as well. I'm not sure of the exact timeline and the causes, but from word of mouth I heard about setter changes, grading changes, etc, but my enjoyment at this gym has definitely fallen off. I am by no means a great/advanced climber. At one point, I was climbing V5-7 range at NJRG, but despite improving as a climber, I now frequently fall on many V3-4 climbs. While I try not to focus on the grades, I think it is still discouraging sometimes / would be discouraging for others in a similar situation. The climbs themselves also have not felt as fun, oftentimes feeling awkward or as if the beta was just to "pull harder", but that may just boil down to style preference / change in setters. These above points may be more personal and less systemic. The worst example is that there was a V1 that was recently set on the island. It was fairly crimpy and I fell off this climb 3 times. Unsure if I was just doing it really incorrectly, I consulted other experienced climbers who also stated that they fell off this climb multiple times. I read some of the other review responses stating that the gym wants to grade closer to "outdoor grading". While I have my own opinion on doing this in an indoor gym, won't let that affect this review score. However, I do believe there is an issue with this grading scheme not being consistent throughout the gym. Pretty much every other V1 in the gym is a jug ladder, so while this is probably the most extreme case, I do feel like at least for the other climbs in the V2-4 range, there is also a lot of inconsistency, in terms of both strength and technique requirements. If the gym wants to do outdoor grading, then I think it would help to make it more consistent. Especially with the prices having gone up a lot, truthfully the location of the gym was the main thing keeping me renewing my membership here. But with all the listed issues, it is hard for me to want to renew again. To end this review on a higher note, the staff and community are both great, which is the reason why this review isn't 1 star. And a side tangent is I've heard from better climbers that the V7+ climbs are graded more consistently/are set well, but I am not good enough to try those out.

NJ rock gym is a great place for kids and adults. Our daughter loves the kids programs and looks forward to her weekly lesson. The staff is friendly and skillful. The space is very clean and offers comfortable waiting areas for parents. The abundant parking is another win!

I had the best time at NJ rock gym and was treated and helped by the friendliest staff, Camren. Any question I had he answers, even though he was feeling under the weather he took the time to chat and make small talk, and he made it a point to walk around and make sure everything was being conducted safely. I’ll definitely be coming back to this gym, there are many choices and varieties of walls and climbs!!

In the best way, this is a tough gym that makes strong climbers! The staff are really nice- with an extra shout out to Camren who is extremely supportive and helpful! My fellow climbers are also very nice and friendly. I’m happy to have chosen this as my home gym! Parking is super easy with the parking lot- what a game changer. (I just wish they had a slack line to practice balance.) This gym has great bouldering and rope climbing; it really feels like it has something for everyone here.

We got an awesome deal for a beginner lesson and get two weeks of membership included. Jackson as our trainer was so informative and fun. We’ve already decided on getting a year membership because we had such a blast!

We were here about a week ago, and everything was awesome! The guy working was very kind and helpful (starts with an M, can’t remember I’m sorry!). The gym was very clean and the people there were very welcoming. It was my boyfriend’s first time rock climbing and he loved it. We will be back!

New Jersey Rock Gym in Fairfield New Jersey is a fantastic place for rock climbers of all levels. When I first started there a couple years ago I had zero experience but since I had purchased a starter set from REI I wanted to put it to use. The staff will take you through an instruction round explaining the different types of climbs whether it's bouldering using the auto belay etc. speaking of the staff what a great group of young kids work there! extremely supportive and knowledgeable, do not hesitate to ask for assistance or even some " beta " to help you get up the wall. Another great aspect of this place, Is the frequency of which routes get changed out. They're always up there long enough for you to work a route solve a problem and make it to the top but they get changed out often enough that it's always fresh and it really keeps the place interesting. Since they expanded, they're offering more day camp and party opportunities for kids and additionally, they have yoga classes climbing classes and other special nights available. They opened up a small cafe which is a great little spot for the parents to hang while their kids are climbing. It's also where the chess boards are. They are another great little extra feature that you certainly don't find in most gyms. There is a small sized workout area in case you are interested in adding some conventional weight lifting to your climbing workout along with some cardio equipment. Obviously the focus is on climbing. The hours are great if you like late night climbing. Do not expect them to open very early but early enough for kids lol

My boyfriend and I visited this gym for the first time with no prior experience. While the facility itself is decent, it didn’t feel very beginner-friendly. We were told we’d receive an orientation with a video, but there was no video, and the orientation was shorter than the time it took to complete the waivers. 5-8 minutes at most. You’d think the orientation would at least be a little longer than that considering the danger of the activity if not done right. The staff member giving the tour seemed to rush through what she was saying it was hard to hear her due to the larger crowd that night. She may have been new so I don’t blame her. We also had to return to the front desk to ask for the harnesses we paid for, as they weren’t given to us initially. Most importantly, we weren’t clearly told which equipment or courses were off-limits for beginners during the “orientation”. Halfway through, a staff member informed us we were using equipment meant only for experienced climbers—again, something we had not been warned about. This could have led to a serious accident. Overall, while the gym isn’t bad, I wouldn’t recommend it to beginners based on our experience.

I was able to check them out on a Tuesday night at 10pm, they were open unlike other climbing gyms around and offering $11 ladies night! Also they have student day on Monday as well as BOGO on Wednesday, great promos for people who'd like to climb without membership commitments. Although I wish they were more flexible on monthly memberships. Competitors around them offer $90 monthly no commitment membership plans. I was able to check out some of the auto belays and to my surprise they were harder than any other climbing gym in NJ, turns out their goal to make indoor climbing a transition to outdoor climbing and they are imitating outdoor leveling instead of creating 5.10s that feel like 5.5. I actually struggled with even 5.7s and I'm a 5.9 in any other gym in NJ! It definitely introduces you to new challenges, you need the core strength on top of finger and arm strength. Overall great location and has a lot to offer, will definitely will be coming back.

I recently took a self-defense class at this gym, and it was an amazing experience! The instructor was incredibly knowledgeable and made the lesson both practical and fun. The gym also has an impressive rock-climbing wall, which adds an exciting challenge to the atmosphere. Overall, the vibe was great. I highly recommend it and can’t wait to go back!

I recently had the opportunity to check out New Jersey Rock Gym, and I couldn’t be more impressed! The rock climbing walls are challenging yet fun, with a variety of routes for all skill levels. The staff is incredibly knowledgeable and friendly, always ready to offer tips and encouragement. The atmosphere is welcoming, with a great community vibe that makes it easy to feel at home, whether you’re a seasoned climber or a complete beginner. I also attended their self-defense class, and it was equally amazing. The instructor was clear, patient, and made the techniques easy to understand. I really appreciated how they focused on practical skills that I could use in real-life situations. The class not only gave me confidence but also taught me how to stay calm and focused under pressure. It was empowering, and I left feeling stronger both mentally and physically. Highly recommend both the rock gym and the self-defense classes for anyone looking to get fit, learn something new, and be part of an awesome community!

Great staff and facility. The setting can be a bit more stiff than some other gyms in the area, but is more reflective of what you might encounter outside at some of the local NJ & NYC crags. The climbs at every skill level are fun and challenging in different ways, and offer opportunities for cool movements from kneebars and dynos on overhang to small crimps and slopers on technical slab. The free monthly guest pass I get as a member is great for bringing friends who are new to climbing

My daughter had her 12th birthday party at the NJ Rock Gym on 9/6/24. The staff helped make the booking, planning and celebrating seamless! They were the most professional, polite, responsive and efficient group of people. The belays were helpful, encouraging and patient with almost 30 girls. (My older daughter had her bday party there about 10 years ago and we had the same experience.) The party rooms are very spacious and clean too! I would highly recommend the NJ Rock Gym for climbing and parties!! Thank you for a wonderful and fun experience for the second time!

Great bouldering. I'd go here over a gravity vault for bouldering any day. Plenty of varieties for beginner to experienced climbers. The top rope isn't as great with shorter walls and less variety compared to a gravity vault. It's nice that there is a café within the place. All the staff I've interacted with have been very friendly and helpful. I've brought a lot of friends around so their guest passes for first time visitors is a great part of the membership.

This was our first visit to this location after reading wonderful reviews and deciding to give it a try. Unfortunately, we encountered some issues with the check-in process, particularly with the waivers for kids under 18. While the staffs were very helpful, we were disappointed with one of the trainers she seemed inconsiderate to kids struggling with the climbing. We won't be returning, and the facility could use some cleaning. The place smells like feet.

Really great place! The people there, like the belays, are really nice and have good humor. I went there with my camp and I had a great time. The belays are encouraging, helpful, respectful, and funny. There was also a plethora of walls to choose from. If you want to go rock climbing, NJ rock gym is the place to go!

Yesterday was our first time here, I was looking for a good place to take my son and my nephew nearer to the nephew's home then our local. I called ahead to try to get an idea how many auto belays they had to know how much of our time we'd spend belaying each other. What I didn't expect was how much bouldering there was. There's some nice routes auto belayed or top roped and an interesting lead wall. But the whole center of the place is bouldering problems of many levels. The boys were very impressed. They even have an inclined cave you can try to solve the roof of, up to a different bouldering area (I took the stairs). I even highly recommend the torta place next door when we were ready for a break. Though I was done climbing after that lunch. Now I wish this place was closer to my house.

This is a great place to stop off at if you're looking for a cozy and intimate climbing experience. Everyone at the gym was friendly and helpful. We were shown around by Connor, he was fun to talk to, easy to get along with and just in general very helpful for this being our first time to this gym. The cave is one of the cooler features I've seen for bouldering, and worth a trip here for just that. This gym has a great selection of differently designed bouldering walls that really encapsulate many different wall types. Plus the new addition is a welcomed one with their cool high ball type boulder wall. All in all I would definitely come back when we are in the area.

Great rock climbing gym! Plenty of routes for beginners and advanced climbers. Friendly and efficient staff members make it an enjoyable experience. Wednesday nights are buy one get one free admission, and they have other specials as well. I feel very comfortable in this gym and enjoy the variety of bouldering and top roping climbs they have.

YES MA’AM!!! This place was AWESOME! I was fortunate to be there on a Friday midday, no one was there so I could go wherever I wanted and wasn’t bothered. The staff was friendly and followed orientation rules TO THE LETTER. Eileen is friendly and is clearly passionate about her job/company. The coolest feature of this place that sets it apart is the cave!!! Sooo cooool (see photos). Routes were well set/graded, autobelays are brand new so a little stiff, no big deal though. I could’ve spent 5 hours here but only spent 2 because I’m working in new shoes (ouch ouch ouch). Highly recommend, if only just for the cave.

The New Jersey Rock Gym is an awesome place to go rock climbing. Matt, Danny, and Rebecca helped my crew and I get introduced to the basics and autobelaying. The process was smooth and the instruction was super helpful, because we were climbing on our own in no time. My brother and I loved the experience so much we went back several times in the same week. They've got a huge facility with tons of routes and scaling difficulty. They even have a rock climbing tunnel cave! Beginners might want to begin with the autobelay as it helps keep you up in the air, and when you get the hang of it, try some bouldering. I saw a little girl do some partner belay and she crushed an entire wall 3x! Really cool environment and the floors are soft so you can fall without fear of hurting something. All in all highly recommended ??. Had a great time and plan on visiting again sometime soon.

Its the best wall climbing place in NJ. This was one of a kind experience for me, glad that I had some experienced friends with me. I would say it has two kind of experience one which is more fun and entertaining and the other one is more of challenging task. You will have a great time here if you are already an experienced climber.

This is a great place to spend a day, especially if it's raining outside. The walls are often being reset and offer a large variety of grades. The atmosphere is really friendly, both from the staff and the community. The pricing is possibly the can best in the tristate area, just $17 for a day pass. I highly recommend coming early in the day to beat the crowd.

What a whirlwind! This week, I treated myself to a new workout experience. Despite having bouldered a number of times (inside and out), this place had me reeling. There were only a few climbs I could manage, and it didn't feel like the place to be a newbie. Unless I want to pay for some lessons, of course... Of which there were many going on. On alleged Ladies Night, I saw a handful of grown women, a larger number of men, and at least five dozen-kid classes going on. I felt like I was at the swimming pool at the Y on a Saturday! Ladies night half off discount was appreciated. They didn't want to apply the student discount because I'm over 22. Uh, what? Like everybody has to finish college in four years? Puh-lease. May or may not come back, wasn't thrilled. Entrance in center-front of building!

Don’t come here for just the boulder climb. It is a very small section. This place is geared to people climbing with ropes. Take the class, you will have a better experience.

Love this place, courses are fun and elaborate and always changing. Great workout, fun staff and not too crowded on the weekends. I'd avoided the BOGO night, went that night and it was so crowded I could barely get a climb in but it was still a good time and usually if you are having trouble a random stranger will drop in and give you a hand maybe some tips and tricks!
