The trash operator seems to have forgotten to pick up my black bin this morning, which I get, might happen once in awhile. I called Athens and within an hour there was a truck that came by and picked up the trash. Great job making it right!
The City of Thousand Oaks has been holding a free landfill day at least a couple of times per year. The goal was for households within the city to responsibly dispose of bulky trash yard or house items beyond what the trash company picks up on a limited times per year. This was a very convenient way of keeping things in check. This year Athens has changed the rules. One can no longer bring a trailer like my small garden trailer. All the bulky trash has to be brought in a 5 passenger auto or a regular pick up truck. Therefore the goal is not really to help you get rid of your trash ...but to advertise that you're doing that.
This is a great example when change is for the worse.
Since Athens began Thousand Oaks service we (Hidden Canyon) has not had our Green/Black bin picked up on our scheduled day (Friday) yet, having to call in every-time. Please do not ask me to email you, that has been done already with no results.
Since I wrote this review they seem to have found us (we were not on their route map), all is well with the world again.
Update 3: There is quality motto in business, "Say what you do and then do what you say". Athens does an excellent job of telling you what they are going to do and then NEVER does it. I have had been trying to receive delivery of a missing can, finally got it after many calls and missed commitments. The latest is trying to change a trash can size. I don't mind that it would take a while to do that, just stop promising when they will change it out and not do it. I understand starting a new contract is not easy, but stop promising and then not deliver!!
PS, as I write this I have been on hold for 15 min while they check what is going on.
After a while they did get their act together and now they run smoothly.
Worse business practices I have ever experienced. I had a tenant move out of a single family home over a year ago. A year later I get a collection for dept showing up on my credit report. I never got any bill or call about it and when I confront Athens they simply say there should have been a call. They cannot provide any evidence of any call or bill and yet its a debt from 2 years ago adding late fees. Trying to iron it out took over ten phone calls with ten different people, you can never gat the same person twice. WHY DOES OUR CITY COUNCIL put us in this this position. :(
I have never experienced such a terrible waste management company! My kitchen garbage has not been collected for three consecutive weeks. The trash bin sits under the scorching summer sun, emitting a horrible odor and crawling with bugs. I have called multiple times to report the issue, and every time the staff promises to come and take care of it, but no one ever shows up. This level of negligence and complete disregard for customers is absolutely shocking! They allow the garbage to rot and pollute the environment without any concern for residents’ well-being. This kind of service is completely unacceptable!
** update ***. After this review got a very sincere and fully “owning” apology from Matt at Athens. He accepted they messed up and made what should be a simple transaction a time waste and unpleasant. He corrected the mistake promptly and fairly. So I raised the rating and am

The worse company and how terrible their service is. Why Thousand Oaks changed over is beyond me. Multiple calls to get a simple temp bin delivered and still no one I speak to can arrange it without another dept who never seems to be available. Hopefully with enough of these poor reviews when the contract comes up, the city of TO will take a look at the complaints against Athens vs Harrison which I suspect were considerably less over decades.
This is the second time Athens Waste Management has gone above and beyond in their level of service to us. This morning, we heard the trash truck and realized we forgot to put our trash out. The truck had passed us so we placed the bin we thought we missed across the street, hoping it would get picked up. It was the wrong bin, so we gratefully watched the trash service person stop the truck, get out, walk across the street to our bins, roll the correct bin across the street to the other side, and empty it for us before returning it to our curb. WOW! Thank you so much!
I had previously notified Athens that a green container was being left out in the common area and used for dog waste. I was told that the container would be picked up -- it wasn't. Today I chased down the driver, but it was too late. So TO/Westlake residents, either stick by the rules regarding waste, or just ask for a larger black Trash bin and return the green container.
Very confused with their bulky items pickup. 2 are included a year. I called and requested and told them what I had . She told me first it needed to be under 45lb then switched to 50lb. What's the use of the service then? . She also said the driver discretion to take it and only one person comes out. I checked their website and there is no weight limit , it only says light ,medium, heavy ,or very heavy. Hope all goes well ..
Athens has to be the worse trash service in the world, the drivers are rude and stare at my little girls as they drive by. I can only imagine what they are thinking. If the trash lid isn’t completely closed the driver complains and has an inspector sent out to charge us more money. I know I’m gonna get a petition put together to get them removed from the city. We had waste management for over 10 years while we were here and never had a problem. Poor management will burn a company to the ground and Athens is on there way to burning. I’ll make sure of it.
Never thought I would miss a trash company. But, we never had a problem with Harrison & Sons. Athens has missed our cans several times, then blames it on us. Worst customer service ever! Avoid if you can. And, shame on you City of Thousand Oaks for making the change to a company that has so many customer complaints.
It took me 20 minutes to order a dumpster. I then called back after 3 days for the dumpster pick up. They answered the call at the corporate office and then transferred me to the Thousand oaks office. They never answered the call in Thousand Oaks. I then called back to their corporate office again and was told that Thousand oaks office is busy and could be out to lunch, etc. They got my number and said someone will call back which never happened. Customer service is non-existent. I wish Thousand oaks had kept WM.
This trash service is the worst if I could give a zero I would…I’m sick and tired of replacing lights and front yard plants because they can’t seem to keep it from falling in my front garden..if it’s not that it’s dragging my trash bins across the front of my house or leaving them in the road…for what you charge I would expect better service..the items I’ve had to replace weren’t free THEY COST MONEY!! Maybe you should talk to the drivers about respecting other ppls property. If you find you aren’t interested in fixing the issues I will speak to them myself you can take that to the bank.
Terrible customer service. Terrible trash pick up. Thousand Oaks switched to Athens services just over a year ago. At first I was happy our prices were lower than WM by a lot. They offered smaller black cans as we don't create much waste. I was happy with that option. Our Green cans now had food waste options, Great!
We always put our cans out the night before, never missed a pickup putting them out.
Inside of just about a year on two separate occasions they failed to pick up our black trash cans. Usually those cans are the last to be picked up, not until mid afternoon. So we don't know they aren't being picked up until its too late in the day to call, and have to wait until the next day to call. The first time, not a problem, I called they said they were sorry, they came picked them up no issue. Mistakes happen.
This time I call, they say sorry, we will do an investigation. I say ok investigate away. They say they will come get it right away. Already acting as though I'm to blame.
Its now almost end of day 4 pm. I call again ask what happened to the pick up? Well they just happen to decide we didn't put it out in time, but they would still pick it up. I'm sorry we put it out the night before pick up, this is your fault rectify it. You said you have a video show me the video for proof because it isn't true. Sorry we can't send you the video, schedule an appointment.
So a manager calls, tells me they did an investigation, look at that we did put it out on time, but hey the video footage shows they serviced it. I'm sorry what, our trash is full. The supervisor then tells me well, you know kids, neighbors someone probably filled it.
I tell him I was home all day with covid I kept going out and opening the lid to see if it got picked up. When did someone come and fill it. So i go out look through my trash it's all my trash from the week, covid snot rags, cat food bag, our trash from the week, meaning they didn't service it and are trying to lie to me about it.
Just apologize for not doing the job I pay you for, and pick up my god damn trash.
Your company is awful.
Have watch the trash build up for 4 days now. 1 truck pulled up and left ,without emptying any bins. TERRIBLE SERVICE ! I wonder who was paid off for this contract???
I called for a 30 yard dumpster that I was told would be delivered on Friday. I called at 3pm to sit on hold 30 minutes before being told they would not be delivering the dumpster. They have no standard operating procedure to alert customers they will not be receiving a dumpster. Additionally, I requested they comp the delivery fee since I had incurred expenses coordinating labor around this delivery and they refused. Gina the operator was also breathing into her microphone like she was walking up a flight of stairs. Thousand Oaks PLEASE go back to EJ Harrison and Sons. Athens is to big for their britches.
I have never been less pleased with a waste management company. I've come home numerous times to having package boxes in the driveway and the trash truck keeps forgetting to empty both garbage tins, not just one, and when they finally get around to it, I get a notice that the trash bin has been 'contaminated' without an explanation and still not emptied. Duh - it's been sitting in the this heat for 2 weeks not course it's not going to smell the best. It is slightly cheaper that other waste management companies, but with this kind of horrible service, I'd rather pay more with a better company.
Hands down the worst waste company. Failed to drop off my bins for three weeks. The truck would pull-up to my house and then drive away without unloading my bins from the back, they did this multiple times a week. I was then charged for this period of "service." The customer service lied about costs over the phone then when asked about the higher than quoted rate and the charges for the drop off period they simply stopped responding to my emails and calls. They have a 15 year contract in Thousand Oaks so they simply don't care at all.
My experience with Athens is good. One time I forgot to push recycle out, heard the truck, the driver had already passed our home. He specifically came back few blocks to accommodate!
Called them to schedule for bulk pick up, it was easy, they picked up old electronic items, boxes etc. all good!
Each week Athens Services picks up ours and our neighbors trash. Each week they add the trash to a bin on the front of the truck and then move the load into the back of the truck. They leave more trash on the streets, in the brush and blowing down the street each week. This week is too much. I video both the Trash and Recycle pick up this week and you would not believe how much was left on the street. This seems to be basic, pick up the trash and haul it away. Not pick up the trash and dump it on the street. I tried to call Athens Services to get some help with this problem and both times it rang for over 3 minutes and someone picked up the line and hung up without saying a word.

I would give them -10 stars if I could. They scheduled my large item pickup for last Tuesday, and I’ve been calling almost every day now and keep getting promised that they will finally come pick it up and it is only one failed promise after another. At one point they actually told me that their worker had marked the item as “already picked up” when CLEARLY it was not picked up. One week later and my large item is still outside waiting for Athens to suddenly care about its customers and pick it up once and for all. I have never dealt with a more unprofessional and irresponsible company. If you’ve scheduled a large item pick up with them, you have better chances of winning the lottery than Athens actually being professional and picking up the item as they scheduled.
Wow I was going to post a negative review stating that Athens just decided to empty half my garbage today and also ALWAYS leaves garbage (plastic wrappers, bags, etc) laying around my yard and street after they come by but CLEARLY I’m not the only one. This is so sad that I have to actually complain (or worry) about a garbage company.
Extremely poor customer service and extraordinary long wait times for telephone customer service. Repeatedly not performing job they promised to do. I upgraded my trash container to larger size. They picked up my old one after it was emptied on Monday but never delivered the new one. I called, was put on hold for 15 minutes and disconnected, when I immediately called back I got the recording that their office was now closed--it was 5:00 on the dot. Today, the customer service representative said they can't deliver my new trash bin until Monday, so I have no bin for a week! Also they are not supposed to pick up the bins until after 8:00am due to noise, but they always come at 7:15am. Please bring back Harrison trash company! Never had any issues whatsoever with that wonderful company.
I can’t believe I’m leaving a terrible review of a waste company. But wow, they have failed on all levels.
The website is useless. Don’t even bother. Just call, or nothing will happen.
I’ve called a few times. One rep was nice but clearly not aware of what she was doing. The next rep was simply obnoxious. Wouldn’t even listen.
I’m moving and wanted to use my bulky items pick up. So I called to schedule. They said they would pick up between 7am and 7pm!!! What kind of window is that? I was there from 6am to 9pm and they never showed. I left a message during the day to confirm, and got no response.
I called today, and they said they had actually picked up at some point, but they only took one of the items. When I called, the rep was horrible, once again. So I’m off to the dump to handle it myself.
Their marketing says they want to be so wonderful, but they have managed to build a company that just can’t live up to their claims, on any level.
I’m extremely glad I’m moving into a territory where I won’t have to deal with them again.
Waste of time calling AS. Not sure if they’re liars or incompetent, but either way this company is far worse than WM by miles. For the last 4 months I’ve called Athens seeking a resolution on incorrect service dates (overcharged), told to expect a call back but they never do. Called every month and told the same thing with no results. To top it off, this week I ordered an extra pick up; told it would happen today. The trash bin is still full, so I called them. Now they say they have no record of the request and will reschedule. I’ve spent over 3 hours on hold or on the line with Athena so far; that’s 3 hours more than what I spent with WM. TO City Council made a big mistake choosing the lowest bidder in my personal experience.
Never would I have thought I’d be leaving a negative review for a trash company. I mean how hard is it to mess up this job? Well apparently I didn’t appreciate G.I. Waste Management and how great they were at doing their job and doing it correctly before Athens took over. ATHENS IS HORRIBLE, HORRENDOUS, TERRIBLE, THE ABSOLUTE WORST! Each week they do NOT empty the cans all the way. Yesterday I was outside doing yard work and watching the process as it happened. They completely missed some cans on our street, just skipped them. Then others were emptied and some only partially emptied. I walked up and down my street and wrote down the house numbers where it wasn’t emptied. I called Athens and was assured they would have someone come back yesterday. Well they never showed up. Called and left a voicemail. Nobody called me back. This morning called again and I was told it’s escalated to “Operations Dept”. This is nuts that I have to waste my time over such an easy fix. Come on Athens, get your act together and do your job!!!! And yes, I am going door to door to my entire neighborhood and we will ALL be calling, emailing, writing to make sure you actually do your job.
We were forced to switch to this company after Waste Management lost the contract with our area. I requested different size containers and was informed that they should be replaced by the end of February the latest. It’s already March and nothing was done. I called in and was informed that the timeline was changed to April. It took WM 2 weeks to replace containers in the past. Very poor decision on the side of our city to switch to Athens. Also why are we being forced to use Compost containers? This should be up to the home owners, not up to Athens.
Athens recently became the collection service here in Thousand Oaks and it has been a terrible experience so far.
First, they never picked up my garbage the first week they started servicing my area. I called to get it picked up four times and each time was handled by a polite and courteous liar. Each time I was told it would be picked up by the end of the day and when it wasn’t and I called again I was told there was no record of my last call. Eventually the trash was picked up on the regularly scheduled day the next week.
Second, I ordered a dumpster but cancelled the same day after learning that I would have to get insulation that is plain as day labeled as fiberglass tested for asbestos. My card was charged the $210 but as of today (12 days later) I have still not received my refund. I have called three times to get this resolved and was met with the same results as my first interactions, being lied to. Each time I call there is no record of my previous complaint to get this resolved.
I try to be reasonable and understand that taking on a new city can be rocky at first but this is getting ridiculous. I work for the City and was an advocate for this company taking over from WM, even going so far as to try and ease friends and family’s worries about the company. Not anymore, never has a company lost my confidence so quickly.
I waited three days to get Athens to pick up my trash. I waited one week for them to get me the replacement cans. I am still waiting. I don't have even one can to place my trash for ten days. I CALLED more than five times during this period and the answers are:" We have placed an order for you, but don't know when you will get your new cans" and "I will let you speaking to my superviser". The supervisor never did pick up the phone. The call blacked out for long time then out completely. This is an absolute non-service TRASH company! 1/20/2022.
We are new to Athens in Thousand Oaks, CA. So far so good. When I called Athens to set up my service and the size of my trash cans, it was easy and customer service was very nice. Athens notified me that they were changing our pickup time which I appreciated. I was also advised when I set up my account what I needed to know about which cans were to be used for what items and not to overfill the trash cans. Also told that we should place them on the street in front of the curb, not sitting on the curbside. Our first day was this past Thurs., 1/6/2022. All cans were picked up and emptied. No complaints at all. Very professional. Thanks.
