What clients say about Austin Metal & Iron Co LP in Austin (TX)

This shipper operates in an unprofessional manner. During pickup, they loaded 5,000 lbs more than agreed and dismissed my concerns when I pointed it out. Their staff told me to “just get it out of here,” showing no regard for compliance, fuel costs, or the impact on the driver’s equipment. Truckers and carriers deserve to be treated as business partners, not as disposable labor. I would advise other logistics companies and brokers to think twice before working with this shipper, as their lack of accountability creates unnecessary risk.

The office manager took the time to explain how to prep refrigerating equipment for salvage. The unloaders have all been patient with my HF folding trailer which I getting with straps as it has no sides. I am familiar with the Dessau place and CMC as well, this is the quickest in and out.

Was very disappointed. Not the place I would not be the place I go in the future.

My beer buddy said, " Heck, I'll never be lazy about coming here again". We recycled our empty beer cans and we can't wait to make more.

Great guys. Honest and keep current with the going rate. I wish I knew the older guys name but he has explained to me different ways to separate and prepare what I brought in so I can get the price per pound higher.

My husband went to basically throw away some old aluminum chairs today and did not know where to go to not get a dumping fine. He didn't have much weight but not enough to write a check worth anything. We didn't care about the money, but didn't want to leave it on the table. He said the nice man still paid him and the workers helped unload his truck for him. Highly recommend this place!

8 CENTS A POUND?? Rented a U-Haul and spent 3 hours picking up scrap bulk trash metal and received $90 TOTAL for me and my buddy to split. Please mark as helpful so these crooks are exposed! Went to location on Decker. The site says they’ll have someone sort your metal and unload. They didn’t do that. And after all that we were given 8cents per pound AFTER we unloaded it. He never never told us the weight the scale shows beforehand. They paid in cash so there’s no electronic record of what they gave. Not even a written receipt. When we said that 8 cents a pound was WAY LOWER then average. He completely ignored us and counted 90 dollars cash out cheerfully like if he wasn’t just taking advantage of anyone. This is a complete scam and rip off and I will NEVER do business here again. I would not recommend this to anyone!!!! Go literally anywhere else!!!

I wasn’t told the price of scrap before just told to weigh my van and unload. Couldn’t verify my weight either. It says someone comes out to unload and sort your metal, but me and my partner had to do all of that. Then, I find out I’m only getting paid 8 cents a pound. Average price for metal (depending on what kind) was 20 cents up to over a dollar according to the national average. Reviews are glowing but I don’t see how. Def go literally anywhere else because if you sell it here it won’t even be worth loading and unloading. Total scam and a huge rip off.

I found out I've been going to the wrong places for recycling . This is my new spot good experience .

Prices are meh, but staff isn’t nearly as rude as the recycle place on Dessau.

Speaking about the decker lane location. I have nothing but good things to say about the entire staff, they are are always helpful and informative. Scott runs a great crew, Stretch (jim) is an extremely knowledgeable person who is always teaching me new things about the scrap business. The labor force in the field are always courteous and willing to help. I've got almost 20 years selling to these guys and will continue to do so. Highly recommended.

Always a smooth, honest transaction. Staff is friendly. Prices are fair. Will continue to drop off recycling material here

I did a homeschool field trip with my 2 kiddos! Jim Shapiro was so patient and kind with my kids. There is such a great history with this place. We will be doing all our metal recycling here as this is the type of buisness I like to support!

They are very good with people they treated me right. I'm definitely going back and telling my friends about it

Friendly staff paid me over 8 bucks for some bags of cans that have been junking up my garage. Living outside of Austin city limits I don't get recycling service with trash service so it's nice to get paid (even just a little) to not just throw away my recyclable metals.

Fist time here, not friendly people the guy had an actutude and was rude to me only reason I dint cuss him out is because he could of short me on money, find somewhere else to go people!

They pay better than Bastrop and Elgin but only slightly. Got a flat on trailer when leaving so that was a bummer. But the people were nice and helpful and worked with us to prove the Ac unit we had was ours that we had just replaced.

Friendly enough guys, no issue with that. My issues is their scale which ripped me off by approximately 850lbs. As can plainly be seen on this spec sheet, the item I brought weighed 2700lbs unladen. Including all the spits, utility rack and BBQ grill, all stainless it should have come to approx 3200lbs. Their scale put me at 2370, obviously a ripoff. I questioned this and they actually said it was due to the mud on my tires. And to think I actually accepted the reduction from .30 to .20 per lb thinking they would be fair with the weight. Boy was I wrong

Took 38lb metal (door nobs and door locks) to Austin Metal & Iron Co LP North HWY 290 location and received $1.08. I am told metal does not worth anything, and it does not worth their time to take my metal to the pill. For $0.03 per lb, unless you have 1000lbs, I do not think it worth you time to bring it to them. Better put it in city recycle bin and save yourself the time, gas and toll.

Went above and beyond by assisting in getting the authorization required to recycle the specialty items I had. To top it off the day before Thanksgiving they unlocked the gates and accepted my load and paid me more than fair, all with a smile.

Great Staff. Friendly Experience. This company is a world apart from other larger scrap yards. They offer top dollar and are happy to help when you arrive. Give them a try once and you will find yourself referring friends or other tradesman.

This past week was bulk trash, and as I prepared some large metal items to go out by the curb I remembered that I always have people come by in pickup trucks grabbing the metal items and hauling them away. I figured that they likely take them somewhere to sell, so I investigated to find a nearby scrap yard. Austin Metal & Iron turned out to be near where I work, so I loaded up the metal items into the back of the mini-van and during lunch time drove out to see what was what. The guys working there were nice and helpful and directed me to the right scale where they weighed my items. I got about $20 for the things I brought, which seems pretty worthwhile since I was just going to have them hauled off for nothing. Assuming I spent a gallon or less for the gas to drive out there, I still came out plenty ahead. I can't vouch for the prices, since I've only taken stuff to the one place, but it seemed entirely reasonable to me. I recommend this if you are planning on throwing away heavy metal items.
