Been here few times. Lots cool history on this. Pay the money and go to the museum lots of cool stuff inside, including the Capsule, they went down and got the miners and brought them up
We brought our sons here about 18-19 years ago. The "museum" was just inside a garage, with the cage they brought the miners up and a few artifacts. Today they have a nice building with lots of mining information & artifacts as well as a lot of information about the 9 miners who were rescued as well as the 9 who are called the "Forgotten 9". It is run by the family who's farm they used to do the rescue. If you have an opportunity to visit, it is worth seeing. And, it is only 20 or so minutes from the Flight 93 Memorial.
Bill is a great guy and wonderful host. The museum he is in charge of is top notch! He has done a wonderful job. I could not be more proud of him and the task he has undertaken to ensure we never forget. Oh, the book I bought is a WINNER!! Bill is the author and honestly a hero. I will be going back again to sit down with him and just talk and ask questions.
We were told this is a small place on someone's farm, but it was definitely worth stopping! The farmer who owned the farm at that point was there, so that was great. He had put together a very interesting video that we watched explaining the whole story, maybe 30 minutes long. There's a decent sized (one room) museum, and then you go outside and can see the actual air shaft and rescue shaft...
Was I'm area and do wanted to experience this site. Your site and door said opens at 11 on Thursdays, I was there at 145. 3 cars in parking lot. Why post times if not adhering to!

Our church group of 53 people visited Quecreek Mining Site. We scheduled our visit at the time of planning. Bill called us two days prior to our arrival to verify that we were still planning our date and time of visit. Bill also met us on the bus to explain location of his presentation. Bill had great illustrations and a presentation as to what took place during those four days! To hear how this impacted so many lives at such an emotional time in their county was amazing! We loved his courage of sharing how this caused a minor and himself to
re-dedicate their lives to Christ!
Very nice site,was very informative and detailed,all equipment was displayed! We had an amazing time and will stop again,living only about an hour away. Although, we were greeted by a very friendly black dog, and were concerned. Does anyone know anything about the dog and if it has a home?
The address posted takes you to a farm. It is the opposite side of the road. We were slightly disappointed. When we walked in the cashier told us that it was $8 per person to watch an hour long video. They closed in 45 minutes. She offered to stay. We asked if we could just look around instead of watching the video. she said yes, for $8. We declined and went outside and walked around. It was disappointing that they were commercializing this horrible accident.
We visited the site today with a group of 8 of us. It was very special. The Farmer who owns the property, John, where this rescue took place in 2002 was so welcoming. We watched a video describing all the inside story of what was taking place behind the scenes. We were glued to our TV's in 2002 when this happened, praying for these miners to be rescued. John tells the full story so beautifully that it brought back all the emotional feelings I had watching it back then. If you get a chance to visit the site and you are interested in a huge part of history go visit. You will be happy you did. Thanks Farmer John!! We really appreciate your time yesterday!! Besides the Foundation, John is a ORGANIC Dairy farmer. His milk is distributed at many of our stores under the Horizon label. Milk. Cheese & cottage cheese. If you purchase it, it supports his farm. The visit was very interesting since I recall the episode that ended with no loss of lives. However, the owner of the site who gave a description of the event became a preacher for Christianity, which was unnecessary. He must realize that some of his guests may not be Christians.
This was a fantastic stop on our 2 day weekend getaway! Bill was very informative and the presentation was 5*'s! Recommend checking out the website to check if a tour is scheduled to ensure you get to join the presentation. Our favorite stop out of everything we did!
I noticed that they would be doing a live presentation on a day we were driving nearby and as the website said people were welcome to join pre-arranged groups we decided to go along. Bill who gives the talk was one of the rescuers and he really brings the story alive. There is a museum to look round and the gift shop sells his book and dvd. Entry is only $8 and it is very worthwhile visiting.
Stopped on the way to Hidden Valley and glad we did. We didn't realize there was a museum on site so we just saw the outdoor sites. We watched some old footage of the event to better understand the ordeal. Enjoyed our visit!
An amazing story showing how God was definitely present with the miners of quecreek. If you are in the Somerset area (or anywhere else nearby for that matter) it is definitely worth stopping and learning about this miraculous event.
Stopped in while on a bike ride through the mountains. While walking around we heard a voice calling, the very nice lady informed us she was just about to put on a presentation about the mine rescue, if we were interested there was a $7 fee each to sit down and enjoy the whole story. So of course we were glad to learn more about the rescue. She was fantastic explaining with maps, props and a slide presentation all about the rescue and how the mine flooded. They have a lot of items on display and she is happy to answer questions. I would recommend it to everyone.
An inspiring true story, preserved and told though the artifacts and displays of this independent museum on the actual site of the miracle at Quecreek mine. Well worth the visit.
We all remember the news of the story. We all cheered as they one by one were finally rescued. But to visit the site to hear the not made by disney story is a completely different perspective. From the recorded voices of the forgotten miners who called out the warnings and became the first rescuers, to Bill the property owner and very generous man who gave part of his property so we the public could visit and lets not forget the amish who imediately came to build this museum. And the 9 who made it! This is a must see! So glad i made the trip.
Absolutely kewlest visit to actually see something that was a "good" thing, not a tragedy like the flight 93 memorial where it's sad and somber. This was a rescue, not an accident tragic thing. Thanks DTM DanTheMan and Colleen
Quecreek has small museum, but please visit for the educational talk! The man who gives it owns the property the site is on and has a first person account from being outside the mine during the rescue operation.
Inside the museum they have the actual rescue capsule that was used as well as plenty of minor (or I should say miner) artifacts.
The rescue is one of only a few happy endings for mining disasters and it influenced ways that latter rescues (namely the Chilean rescue) were accomplished. Mining coal has been a critical industry to the state of Pennsylvania and it's important for anyone (not just Pennsylvanians) to understand what happened.
the one star is only because the parking lot and Visitor Center have absolutely no signage. also please be careful using the Somerset County tourism guide because it indicates the site is open until 4:30 when it is really open until 4. BUT the display in the visitor center definitely deserves 5 stars as does the outside display and the very kind volunteer that answered my phone call and stayed open for us deserves 10 Stars for sure
