On the island? Stop by. Centuries old and sprawling across their yard and still growing. Not a lot here. Short spur to the sound if you are so intrigued. It produces Thomas Jefferson's favorite grape, the Scuppernong. You wont be here long, but you'll be able to say that you saw it.
This was disappointing to us. I see now that it is a private property, but when we were told about it at the visitor center, it sounded like a more public space. I don’t wanna creep around somebody’s yard, just to take a picture of old vines. But if that’s your thing, it’s an easy stop.
Very cool spot to check out if you're into wine, horticulture and/or history! The whole property and the set-up for the vines are beautiful!! They have a sign on the road a small paved area to park, so its very easy to visit. As others have mentioned please be respectful. If the owners of the house are reading this, thank you for taking care of the mother vine and sharing with the public!

Amazing to see a grape vine that was one of the first sights that the English men saw upon arriving on the shores of this new place. It is believed to be over 400 years old. There is an old fashioned well near the vine. The well is filled in. It is worth taking the trail to see the ocean and take pictures. Beware of an uneven path surrounded by vines and trees. The vines have large thorns, so be careful.
My husband and I have known about this grapevine for years, but have never been to see it. We finally saw it in February 2025. There was no admission and no wait. We were the only ones there. It's in the front yard of a residence. It is kept up really nice. Lots of trellis. You walk on a very short sidewalk to it. The sidewalk ends at the beginning of the trellis. We didn't walk under the trellis we didn't want to disturb anything around it.
A very quick stop on Roanoke Island. But the history alone made this short venture so very sweet. A 400 year old vine is incredible on its own. There is parking and a trail which we did not tale that lead down to the sound. I was happy to check this off my bucket list for sure, and it's worth a visit if you are doing other activities on the island as well.
This is literally in someone's front yard in a neighborhood. They have a little space for people to park in the horseshoe driveway. Just be a respectful human when you visit, and you should be fine.
Supposedly the original muscadine vine. If you’re interested in muscadines (AKA - Southern Grapes) you need to swing by this place and take in this majestic vine.
As always be respectful of the homeowner, i knocked, but no one came to the door. Thankful they allow people to visit. BE RESPECTFUL so others can continue to visit.
This place is super cool! It’s cool to see a piece of Mother Nature that is so historical. But not only that, it is on someone’s property who is kind enough to make a parking space and signs (to the water, the vine, and the Lennon well) to welcome visitors. They let their neighbors pick grapes! So awesome!
No directions to site; it's in someone's yard with a couple extra parking spots. Sign at driveway says "Welcome, Mother Vine", no other information posted on grounds.
It's interesting but its not really an exhibit. It's located in a private yard and there is no information physically present. It's cool to see an old vine.
This yard is beautifully landscaped. The vine is set up so you can walk underneath it and the path to the shore opens up to a beautiful view. It kind of feels a little uneasy just driving up to someone's front yard and walking around but it doesn't take away much from the attraction.
Very interesting, located in someone's yard. There's a circular driveway with signs pointing to the plant. I felt like I was intruding but for the signs. I think it might be an advertising play for their wine but nothing wrong with that, very cool to see such an old and big plant. The grapes on this plant are not really in clusters and I could believe that this is how grapes used to be long before today's breeds.
