Manteo (NC)

Scenic park to walk around and learn about the local history. There are also picnic tables, restrooms, and a walking path to the water. It's always an enjoyable visit!

Unfortunately the visitor center was closed due to government shutdown, but was able to explore grounds which has informational plaques around

I went to the Lost Roanoke Colony and the Visitor Center, both of which are free. I lucked out that a guided tour had just started when I arrived so I joined that, the guide was very knowledgeable and it was a good tour. There's a short trail you can walk around the old colony grounds takes about 15-20 min with some informational signs to read throughout. The visitor center has additional info about the site, the colonists, and the surrounding area/inhabitants also has some cool artifacts.

Visited Fort Raleigh hoping to finally solve the mystery of the Lost Colony. Sadly, I am still lost. On the plus side, the park rangers are way friendlier than 16th-century colonists, and the walking trails didn’t require me to chop wood or survive on questionable rations. The outdoor theater made me feel like Netflix had been invented 400 years too late, and I was slightly disappointed to find zero ghosts of colonists handing out directions. Overall: beautiful history, lovely trees, but mystery remains unsolved.

Dog (and other animal) visitors: checkout the welcome desk in the main building and ask about BARK Ranger. Our dog Leo earned the certification, this activity allowed Leo to be a part of the exploration fun too while completing requirements to earn the certification. We were also able catch the tour of the historic site. Our guide was super knowledgeable about the history of the fort and shared it in a way I considered to be a fun and animated. Wonderful place and staff! BARK Ranger has me ranking this spot as over-the-top dog friendly--just be sure to abide and uphold the BARK Ranger principals.

Take the tour and the story really connects with other famous parts of history. There are really three colonies with the last one being the “lost colony”. Our tour guide was a phenomenal story teller and I wish I could have found him afterwards to tell him that. Took three kids in a hot July day and they were all entertained. Earned the Junior Ranger badge too which was quite challenging for all of us.

We loved seeing the history of the lost colony! This site is beautiful but you will need walking shoes. The gift shop was very nice and you can get your national parks passport stamped there (or purchase one which is worth it). They have artifacts inside the visitors center so be sure to check it out!

Absolutely beautiful place. Museum on site that is very informative as well as interactive. There is also historians on site that will hold group history sessions in front of the museum... several trails and a theatre where they hold the lost colony of Roanoke play. Me and my family definitely enjoyed it and can't wait to go back

Odd. The information building has a neat little informational museum and gift shop. Across from it are bathrooms. The walk way to the fort is behind it. The fort was redone in 1950ish . Then you walk to where they have a reenactment theater. Staff were friendly

We were running late to visit today's as our stop was one of many. We showed up at 4:30 afraid the staff would be annoyed or negative. Fortunately, they were not at all. They helped us setup a timeline of items to complete before the interior closed and let us know the grounds remained open for us to enjoy after they closed. We earned so many new things. The grounds were beautiful, clean, and very well maintained.

It’s a beautiful place to learn the history and the visitor center has a very knowledgeable information and they provide a video on the lost colony every 30mins which is a must watch and staff are very friendly,helpful and knowledgeable.my kids had fun,learnt many things.must visit place on Roanoke island.

Worth a visit if you are nearby. There's not much to see on the short trails but the visitor center has good educational content and a movie.

Very small park with recreations of the lost colony of Roanoke. There is no charge for the visitor center and lost colony but there is a separate fee for the botanical gardens which we did not visit but have heard is very pretty. Easy to get to from the outer banks with adequate parking (at least when we visited)

Fort Raleigh in Manteo is a fascinating blend of history, nature, and culture. Great Rangers. Trails are well maintained and easy to follow. Excellent story boards around with just enough information. It was nearly empty, and we were able to stroll in silence and reflect on the significance of the location.

Left me with more questions than answers but also so much interesting information. The lost colony did not leave too much behind, but the museum on site does a good job presenting what we do know. It was beautiful visiting in the fall. The staff at the visitors center were also wonderful.

The Lost Colony: Backstage tour is interesting, and our tour hosts were well informed and full of energy. The production was worth seeing. Some great 3-d mapping special effects. Bring mosquito spray or buy at the gift shop.

This has been one of my favorite National Parks passport locations to visit in a while. This place is absolutely stunning! I love the moat around the fort, and driving through the inside of the fort is great. I saw a sign for housing rental/leases on a building, and having renters to live withing the fort is a great way to produce income to help generate cash to go towards the preservation and upkeep of the property. This is one of the best thought-out ideas to help maintain a historical site that I've seen. Kudo to the National Park Service for keeping this place useful!

We have been checking out many national parks this summer, and we enjoyed this one. Because to Hurricane Debby, we were not able to see the performance of the Lost Colony. That will have to wait for another trip. We were able to do the ranger led walking tour, but it was non walking and indoors because of the weather. It was very informative. We did explore the grounds a little before the rain. We were expecting something very different for the fort, and we passed it at first. The history here is worth the trip.

The ranger (s) is the best part of the visit. They are professional and describe the story in a way that you live the experience of the settlers, what they were thinking, and what they did wrong. The bathrooms are clean and the park is well organized.

You can see the remnants of the old fort, the beautiful amphitheater, Elizabethan garden, the outdoor drama, The Lost Colony. A very relaxing place to stroll and sit on a bench and watch the wildlife.

We visited the Elizabethan Garden late June 2023. While the colors were not plentiful, it was still a nice walk around the several acres of gardens available.

Recommend this stop if in the outer banks. Wish we could have taken in the play (starts after june 1 I think) … “off season” had plenty to do at this stop however and still very enjoyable. Spend 2.5 hrs here. the video in the welcome center is good, the little museum space is interesting, the best part was the tour with conversationalist / volunteer Mr. Austin. He was easy to listen to as he presented history in an engaging and fun way. The focus is the lost colony and that period but he was also able to speak to and answer questions we had about the Underground Railroad / freedman colony and other history that surrounded the area, time period and progression of founding America or establishing first colonies. Appreciated his insights and connecting the dots. Thanks!!

Indian village needs some TLC. Rather run down. English settlement same. Best thing to see is the ship Elizabeth 2. Crew actors played their parts well. Responded to questions. The museum exhibit was child friendly and extensive. We watched the movie, Two Paths. Well done but theater too cold.

Outdoor adventures! All Free.. The Park Ranger we worked with was very kind and helpful. She kept our 4 kiddos involved in the Junior Ranger books helping to make sure they were learning. Our kids loved earning their badges from Fort Raleigh.. We enjoyed exploring and learning about our countries history at Fort Raleigh. Our children enjoyed the museum and video explaining what happened here at Fort Raleigh. We traveled here in November and missed the opportunity to see the "Lost Colony" performance at the amphitheater. The views standing at the top of the seating area towards the stage were breathtaking. The water was right behind the stage. Amazing. There are many monuments and teaching tools along the paths to help you understand what took place here. The Elizabethan Gardens are nearby but close at 4 and has an entrance fee. Might be worth checking out since close.

We went and saw the lost colony re-enactment and it was really cool. I was a little skeptical at first but the show was really good. The actors and actresses seem to really enjoy what they do and it showed throughout the show. I definitely recommend seeing this show. The sunset behind the stage was awesome too.

We had a great time exploring the history of NC while exploring this gem. Due to the government shutdown we weren’t able to see the theatre area but we were able to explore most other parts of this beautiful park. The waterfront walk was my favorite of all! Thanks for a beautiful time!!!
