They were able to get my car in quickly, explained the pricing and, right on time, they were done. The store area is clean, quiet and there's also an office with a desk where you can work while you wait. I'd definitely come back here again. The online scheduling is easy and people are friendly.
I needed a tire that would slow leak and took it to Shade Tree. They checked the tire for any punctures and found none. The work was done quickly, and I picked it up in less than an hour. Great service and everything that they did was explained to me.
I wanted to update this review. After posting this, Clint from Shade Tree contacted me. He acknowledged that there was a communication breakdown on their end and refunded the $226 charge. This speaks volumes on their integrity and dedication to customer satisfaction.
I brought a friend's car that was overheating to Shade Tree to get it looked at for the High Engine Temp Alarm and to get repairs done for the High Engine Temp Alarm. When I heard from them they sent me a quote for oil change and filter, air filter, oil cooler assembly, transmission shifter bushing, transmission flush, and a leaking coolant hose on the turbocharger. In all, the quote was over $2100. I asked them on the phone what the cost would be to fix just the coolant hose so that my friend could get the car back to KC where they could address the other issues at a later time. They would not quote me for just the coolant system fix, which is what I brought it in for. So, I told them not to complete the repairs and I would pick the car up. I went to pick the car up and they charged me $226 for no repairs completed. They did not address the problem that I brought the car in for and did not discuss the $226 dollar charge prior to me dropping the car off if repairs were not completed. I don't know if they do the quality work they claim to do and I will never know because I'll never be back there. The way they approached a specific issue that I needed resolved was not professional. I understand that what they found does need to be repaired, but I communicated to them the service that I wanted them to address and why and they would not work with me.
I couldn't be happier with the service I received from Shade Tree Auto in Grimes. From the customer service to the work approval process and the quality of work that was done I would highly recommend Shade Tree Auto as your vehicle maintenance provider.
My experience with Shade Tree Auto of Grimes was pleasant. The technician that worked on my car was precise and straight forward. Marcie and Evan was happy to explain everything that was taking place that made my first experience worry free. It was good to have knowledgeable personnel keep me informed. Kudos to them.
We are very impressed! Another local car service place kept giving us terrible customer service, taking a long time, and wanting to charge us a bunch of money. They also forgot to put a part on my car and we had to deal with my car almost being in disrepair. Not here. They listened to the nightmare we went through elsewhere, did everything they could to resolve the issue, and get us on our way, affordably. We will be using this shop from now on!
They provided great service from the moment I first called. They got me in for a day-of pre-purchase inspection, which offered a detailed and thorough report with clear photos and notes. The discussion afterwards to review the results was helpful, professional, and well-communicated. While I can't speak on their maintenance and repair services, I can definitely recommend this shop for a PPI.
I had transmission issues on my drive home for Christmas. I'm very thankful Shade Tree was able to get it taken care of for me quickly during a holiday week. Great service and staff.
Previously gave this company a one star review for the matter explain below. I felt it they were due an update due to the store, managers, interest in clearing up a misunderstanding and miscommunication with a new member of their team. The $101 that they were suggesting was the cost of mounting and balancing of two tires that are on a vehicle… Still seems a bit for 10 or 15 minutes of work, but I digress. The fact that the manager called me to discuss this issue on the same day the review was written speaks volumes about the care they have for their public image. Well done in that regard. Love working with this group. Their online system makes it easy to see exactly what needs to be done and allows for effective communication on what maintenance you do or don't want them to do. They always explain the repairs they are suggesting via phone call, allowing for questions. They are fair and get the work done quickly. Will continue to do business with them.
I had a slow leak in my tire and they got me in that morning and got it patched in no time. Gave me some options for new tires at a reasonable cost too. Very friendly service!

I'm 20miles from home and at some point I got a flat. I was out by Walmart with nowhere close enough to get air and I was already starting to leave a mark on the sidewall and I didn't want to move it without airing it. They sent out a couple guys to air my tire, or possibly pull it if they had to, and got me going again all within a half an hour! They were the most kind people!! Thanks a ton!! Super reasonably priced too.
I discovered what I thought was a huge nail in a rear tire. I drove 3 miles to Christian Brothers Automotive in Grimes. They didn't have the time to even look at my tire! I then drove to Shade Tree Auto, also in Grimes. Friendly welcome, they took my car in and fixed the problem in less than an hour. This is what good caring customer service is supposed to look like. Highly recommend ??
Very positive feedback for the electrical work on my Toyota Hylander causing disconnect between the car computer and battery. Still not sure some of the parts were needed but they were getting old and I made decision to replace. Thank you.
Bought and had them install for me a front and rear dash cam. Installation looks fantastic! This comes as a do it yourself kit but they made it look a lot nicer than I would have and at a wonderful price very pleased highly recommend!
My experience was great at Shade Tree Auto! They managed to get me in last minute on a Friday and were able to get my rear breaks replaced when I needed it done. They also have a little private office I could work in while I waited. Everyone was super friendly and I never felt like I was taken advantage of either!
My brakes went out on my car. My normal repair shop could not get me in for 2 weeks. So I called Shade Tree, and they got me in same day. Gave me an estimate. Work was done on time and at a competitive price. The people were very professional and customer friendly. I will go there again.
Shade Tree (Grimes location) definitely exceeded my expectations! My car was making a "funny noise," so I stopped by mid-morning. They listened to it, and immediately knew what the primary issue likely was. They gave me a loaner car, and after I left, did a full diagnostic (with no pressure to purchase any specific service), and then did the work (including going to get parts), and I had my car back before 5:00 p.m.! I will definitely be taking my car there for any future repairs, and will also happily share my experience and recommend them to others.
Broke down on long road trip and Shade Tree was able to inspect car the next day, fix the symptom, and identify the underlying cause missed by three previous mechanics…all to get us on the road later in the afternoon. Price was on the higher side but absolutely worth the professionalism and problem solving. Highly recommend
I’m an out of towner coming into Des Moines for the day for training when I inadvertently turned a corner too soon and rolled over a large curb causing some noticeable damage to the underside of my vehicle. Even with a laundry list of mechanical issues, and 156,000 miles, my Mercedes always runs like new after taking it here. Not sure how they do it, but every other mechanic I've tried can't. Was unhappy with the service I received during my last visit, and they went above and beyond to make it right. They really value their customers and take feedback to heart, which feels increasingly rare in today's economy. Been getting my current car serviced here for over 5 years and they've always had exceptional service. They have some of the best and most knowledgeable mechanics out there and deserve all the praise and awards they've gotten over the years. Highly recommend. Especially if you drive a European car.
I cannot think of enough positive words to say about Shade Tree Automotive in Grimes. Above and beyond doesn't even describe how terrific my experience was with them. Tim worked diligently to ensure my car's repairs would be covered under the CarMax MaxCare warranty, all the approved work was done in a timely fashion, and they drove my vehicle to my home when I couldn't pick it up before the weekend. Tim promised he would take care of me when I dropped off my car, and he absolutely delivered on that promise. I felt respected and cared for as a customer by Shade Tree Automotive. There is nothing that could have been done better about this experience. I have tried a few shops since moving to the area, but Shade Tree in Grimes has all of my car business from now on.
Updated Review: The owner of the company personally reached out to me to let me know that they 100% agreed with me and should have never continued services after finding the rust. He was very apologetic and just wanted to make things right. I really appreciate their willingness to make it right and for reaching out and showing that they actually care about their customers. The work they performed prevented me from buying a lemon. This is a very reputable shop with a great owner who will make sure you get the quality work and service that you desire.
Original Review: I had this company look at a car that I had plans on purchasing. I asked for the regular inspection and to perform a compression test and leak down test in addition. The technicians found a ton of frame and subframe rust on the vehicle during the inspection. I don’t understand why they didn’t stop the inspection right when they found out about the rust. Instead of calling me and letting me know about the rust, they proceeded to do the compression and leak down test, when it is obvious that I wouldn’t have had those services completed had I known that the vehicle was rusted out. They just wanted to charge me the extra 200 for the other service. A real mechanic that cared, would have called me about the rust and explained how a compression test and leak down test isn’t needed because the vehicle isn’t even safe to drive due to the rust! I appreciate that they sent videos about everything they saw, but they 100% knew that they had no business continuing the service without letting me know. The least they could have done was ask if I wanted them to continue, given the rust. That’s predatory if you ask me…
The team at Shade Tree has serviced multiple vehicles I own and each experience has been extremely positive. They provide a full inspection with pics and recommendations for service and are not pushy on minor down the road issues of the vehicle. Would recommend them for all levels of service needed.
Shadetree always delivers top notch service. I appreciate the pictures and detailed description of what the vehicle needs. The automated, online system allows you to read the report and select what you want fixed, without pressure for unnecessary spend. Pam keeps you updated on progress and goes the extra mile. Great job from the whole team in Grimes. We have been using Shade Tree Auto for about 5 years now. From engine replacement to shocks and struts we've done it all. You can't beat the 40,000 mile warranty on most everything they work on. The engine is covered by the factory for 100,000. Changing your oil here comes with a courtesy inspection where they give it to you straight. You can approve or decline any work straight from your phone. I dropped off my truck and they offered a courtesy ride or car to drive while they worked on my truck.

We have been going to Shade Tree for several years now, referred by a friend. We’ve never looked back! They take care of us every time, and are so friendly and helpful.
They always send us send us the inspection with costs prior to doing the work, and pictures are included. They are honest, and never try to sneak in added fees.
This most recent time, Shade Tree had our vehicle for 5 days, for some extensive repairs. Pam stayed until 7:00 on a Friday night so I could pick up the car, rather than having to wait until Monday.
They treat us like family, and we are so grateful!
