BE AWARE if purchasing gravel from here-- they are prompt with their delivery, and their multiple locations make them very convenient to buy from. But DO NOT allow them to deliver based on their word alone as to what you are getting. We ordered 1 ton of washed grey stone gravel from them. It came with at least 30% sand mixed in, despite the fact that it was supposed to be washed, and the stones were smaller than what we had requested as well. Then, assuming that the sand/dust might simply be an unavoidable consequence of greystone, we ordered 2 tons of WASHED (larger) river stone from them. We were VERY specific about this and explained to them that we needed it washed as we are using it for a submerged French drain, and it needs to be washed because any silt/mud in it will clog up the perforated pipe of the French drain and render it useless-- and we very much need the French drain to work as it is providing hydrostatic relief for our house/basement. I've included pictures-- the stark difference in color is what we've rinsed off versus how it arrived at our house.
The river stone that they sent looked, quite literally (as you can see in the pictures), as if they had dredged it off the river bottom and driven it straight to our house. It was covered in THICK mud, and full of debris (again, a large percentage of the tonnage we paid for is actually accounted for in the mud and dirt mixed in with the stone). This is naturally a huge inconvenience when we are already digging and laying French drain by hand. When we called them to let them know how dirty it was, they insisted that what they had sent, both times, WAS washed. They were at least honest enough to give a partial refund on the second order (which MIGHT cover our water bill this month after this nightmare)... but they also had the audacity to tell my husband on the phone, "well you can just hose it off if it's too dusty." Which is... hilarious, to say the least. We have used probably hundreds of gallons of water at this point trying to get this stuff clean because it is so covered in mud. We first did try hosing down the pile, which was effective on about the first inch deep layer-- so basically a useless endeavor. We then built a giant sieve to try to shake some of it loose but the mud was far too sticky for that to work. So instead we have literally had to put a small amount into our wheelbarrow at a time, fill the wheelbarrow with water and stir it around, then hose off each individual shovel as we transport it to the French drain. I have used gravel from many different gravel pits in my life, and I have never, ever, seen one try to pass off a product like this as "washed"-- maybe it was just laziness and their driver grabbed from the first pile they saw and didn't note they needed to grab washed gravel. Or maybe they just cut that corner on deliveries because they tell you it's non refundable once they drop it off-- so why not send the cheaper unwashed gravel to the people who ask for washed. Or maybe they don't actually wash any of their product. Whatever the case may be, hugely disappointed in the service/product we received from here. It's unfortunate that they have the market pretty well cornered around here but if we can find another business for future needs, we will likely take our business to them instead.
BEST experience with Hipps Stone! I called today for a ton of flagstone to be delivered asap. While the stone I wanted only came in a 2-ton pallet, Steven, at the Swannanoa location, separated out a single ton for me and is having it delivered to my home tomorrow morning! I couldn't have asked for a better experience!!!

I came on Monday to purchase some Stone. Steven is think his name was cane out and met me along with a gentleman on a forklift with such a beautiful dog. Between Steven and I believe his name was Bryan or Brad I can't remember. They both helped me get loaded and were so friendly. I can't say enough about the employees here. They all treated me like a real valued customer including the young lady inside the office. She told me her name was Brookie. She had new rang up and finished so fast and told me to have a wonderful blessed day. This Businesses employees need to show other places how you treat a customer with respect. I will most definitely be returning to this business to purchase all my rock in the future. Thank you all for brightening my day you three. I walked out of there feeling awesome.
I had the honor of meeting Steve and Logan after getting 3 tons of road-bond to repair some of the road damage sustained during the storm Helene. These guys are extremely knowledgeable and knew just what I needed, delivering it without issue even going the extra mile. I had a truck load of gravel delivered for my 80' drive and within 15 minutes, Chad had filled a large low spot, added to the two water breaks, and topped off the rest of the drive. Quick, professional, and very minimal shoveling on my part. I'd highly recommend Hipps Stone and Chad!

I recently had a load of gravel delivered to my house to repair holes in my drive created during Helene. The man who delivered it was Chad Goodman. He did an amazing job spreading the gravel with his truck. Although it was a small load he hit all the important spots! I would highly recommend him for your future needs.
I have used the Swannanoa location several times over the last couple years for delivered parking lot gravel. The in-house staff and drivers have always been professional and courteous (thanks Chad & Logan). They also make sure to understand any special requests with regard to dump locations or driveway spread runs.
The guys that work at the Swannanoa location are the best. Helene washed out our driveway. We called Hipps Stone for some road bond and gravel and they came within a few days. The staff are so easy to deal with and Chad did a wonderful job spreading the gravel.

Only place I ever buy stone, they are always quick and have the lowest prices around and there is no BS with them. Randy is courteous and knowledgeable and fair and I have worked with him a dozen times over several years and every experience is positive.
One note, do make sure you know how you are getting your stone home, be prepared to self load (bring gloves) and have a sensible vehicle for transport even if it is just laying the back seats down with a tarp laid out.
They are happy to let you make multiple trips to take a full ton home yourself in a passenger vehicle if that is all you have.

Came here to buy some stone for our home project a couple months ago and was shocked at how aggressively disengaged and disinterested the owner was with helping us in any aspect of the sale. Its was the type of service you'd expect from a teenage hipster barista who can't be bothered to take your order. We had to prompt every aspect of the sale ourselves, from price, to how the stone is loaded, weighed (fyi, they include the pallet on the scale), delivery, etc. We should have taken the hint that our money wasn't needed from the beginning and left. However, we bought some stone to pick up later in the day when we had our truck. When we came back to get our stone at 4:15, the owner was waiting impatiently in the driveway with his forklift ready to block the driveway. He was for the first time very communicative, yelling down from the forklift that they close at 4:30. We told him we'd be loaded in 10 mins. He sat on the forklift and waited. As we were driving off at 4:28 a truck with a trailer came into the drive and he waived them in. He was helping them load up mulch as we drove back by five minutes later.
We love supporting our local businesses, so this was quite a disappointment as we do lots of home projects and was hoping this was our stone place. We are even more disappointed to write this review. In fact, we decided to just let it go and move on. That was until we bought stone from French Broad Stone and had the completely opposite experience which prompted this review. The contrast in service was so stark that we wanted to let people know there is a fantastic alternative.
Randy and Chad and the rest of their crew are so helpful, knowledgeable and accommodating! Chad always goes out of his way to make sure I get my shipment ahead of time. I wouldn’t shop anywhere else for my gravel and rocks !

I’m a DIY home landscaper and had been waiting for the stars to align with a borrowed truck and a free Saturday to knock out the final stone touches on a years-long project. I went to Hipps for the product availability and Saturday hours, but I’ll be coming back for the customer service. Shane is awesome. He managed to help me figure out what I needed, simplified the logistics, and thread a forklift through a proverbial needle to boot. The affordable price when I checked out surprised me too. (If Shane asks whether you want to take his word for it or measure your rocks, take his word for it.) Good people, good service, good products.
