What clients say about NOS Marine in Hibbing (MN)

Had a great experience, they removed my old motor and installed a new to me motor on my boat same day. Unfortunately about a month later I had a unexpected part failure, called scotty and he took time out of his day to help me troubleshoot my symptoms over the phone and was able to diagnose my issues. A 1400$ part new, scotty pulled one of the shelf and i was on my way free of charge, couldn't say enough good things about my experience with scotty at nos marine. If your in the market for a used mortor these are your guys, sincerely a highly satisfied customer.

On 12/26/23 I purchased a Ranger Z20 with a 2003 225 Yamaha HPDI on the back which was “guaranteed” to be a good running motor. Of course with living in MN, I couldn’t get this boat out until ice was out of the lakes. In April, a month before fishing season, I was able to get the boat out to run through some things. The first thing I checked was the trolling motor, ran great so I knew I at minimum had a back up. Fired up the motor, started great and idled for 5-10 minutes while I messed with electronics. After letting it idle, I took off with it and it never got on plane or even close, seemed like it didn’t have much for power. Called Scotty and he instantly thought it was a shift switch but also thought possibly to try a different prop. Few weeks later, I was able to get a different prop and didn’t make a difference. Took the boat to Frahm Marine Werx in Stewartville, they instantly traced it back to the shift switch which was all mangled they stated…. That’s odd right? Anyways, returned to the lake, was able to get on plane 4-5 times in a row so figured it was good to go. Fished roughly an hour, came back to the big motor to change spots and now when I’m taking off, the motor is cutting out like a fuel issue. Took the motor back to Frahm, they did a deep dive and a lake test. They took it out and found that the high pressure pump was only pushing out 13 pounds of pressure. I reach out to Scotty again, he offers me a pump to replace it and after weighing the options, I decided to run 4 and 1/2 hours one way and back for this to be replaced and hopefully be able to take it on vacation the following week. Luckily Joe from Frahm was willing to stay late to replace this on a Friday night to send me on vacation with it. Take off with it after being dropped in the water on vacation and still doing the same thing…… reached out to Scotty again, said he would be willing to look at it but schedules didn’t match up so I opted to take it back to Frahm. I did note to Joe that I got it to take off a few times by tilting the motor all the way up out of the water after shutting it off. I did this 3 times but didn’t want to push my luck. Joe dug deeper, he found the float valve was set high and looked mangled also. He adjusted the float valve to the correct level and replaced a filter on intermediate fuel pump. After verifying in the test tank that there were no fuel leaks, Joe took it to the lake for another lake test where the motor ran well! After testing it he was heading back to the launch and as he was slowing down the motor shut off completely on its own. He let it set for 3-4 minutes and it started but just idled back to the ramp. He checked compression and all cylinders were 115-120 PSI with the exception that #6 had 0 PSI. Joe called me with this news and laid out the options. I called Scotty and just went over how many issues this motor has had since I had gotten it when he guaranteed it to be a good motor. At this point he didn’t want anything to do with it, he claimed he was going to look for a new power head but had pretty low hopes of that. I asked him if I could possibly just get my money back after everything, even though I had spent thousands on repairs already and he wouldn’t because he claimed since it had been 6 months, it was on me…. I had maybe put 5 hours on this motor since having it, and that’s a big maybe. He blamed it on the mechanic and myself of course. Later on I spoke to the mechanic who had been working on it and he stated how this motor was basically slapped/mangled together. The shift switch alone looked like it had the block set down on it which was the first issue. The wiring was a mess, someone clearly was slapping this together and sending it out the door. When talking to Scotty the last time, he was saying how other customers were having issues with their motors that he was dealing with. At this point, I had absolutely no trust in his marine mechanic abilities and have decided to roll with the punches and take care of it myself. Given my experience, I’d strongly recommend not dealing with him.

Needed a ECU for my 2005 Yamaha 115 and Scotty had one available at a reasonable price. Delivery was prompt and it worked as promised. Thank you!
