We stayed at Kowechobe campground on the way to Key West. Spaces are so large we didn’t have to unhook our tow vehicle l. Only drawback is the grass needs cut badly. Will definitely be back
Great for big rigs. It's an open field with a few small trees, so not much shade. Easy access from the road but there's a pretty sharp turn into Kowechobe. We did it in our 40' motorhome pulling a jeep, so it's doable. The adjacent campground is called hickory hammock campground. Site 7 is the only space big enough for a large RV. The rest are only suitable for tents and very small campers. There's a lot of shade with lots of trees that have low hanging branches at the hammock campground. Large gators nearby and moo cows in kowechobe campground. No amenities, need reservation.
Dinner Island is what it's always been. Changes for good or bad come slowly here. Many birds ,and this evening it's either a deer or a panther over in the field. It's dusk and the grass is high so can't tell which. The canals and ponds are clogged up with that invasive water hyacinth from sugar cane field fertilizer runoff. Regardless there's a couple of small alligators and the birds are trying to fish. Also rosiated spoonbills! Campgrounds are quiet but the grass needs cut in the field before a fire starts. The outhouses have been untended for a long time. No toilet paper, floors and walls dirty. Trash bins have been removed. As the season progresses, hope to see improvements.
Absolutely beautiful place. We took our RV here for three nights and had a great time. They do not have electricity, so it’s quite primitive but as long as you bring what you need, it’s amazing. There’s also hunting available if that’s your kind of thing. Remote yet easy to get to. Two hours from Miami.
Nice quiet place. Road in was good. No potable water at campground. No amenities. Pack it in pack it out. The area was clean. Lots of sun for solar. The only drawback was the grass being so tall.
Beautiful area to observe birds, deer and other wildlife. I saw a mother gator and her babies. Very peaceful too and the road is nicely maintained with just a few potholes considering.
Beautiful scenery, birds, deer… & cows :) Rustic camping with tent/car camping sites under the shelter of trees. Fire ring provided at these sites. There is an adjacent open field for RV camping. One outhouse, no water (so if you camp, be sure to bring your own water). Well maintained and clean.
A true escape into “Old Florida”! Lots of open space to enjoy. The Primitive Tent Camping under the trees made for a great base camp. A relaxing weekend under the stars.
Visited in mid February and had a great time. This is a very large wilderness area and spent the entire afternoon cruising through the driving tour route as well as taking a hike. Wildlife was plentiful and easy to find. Some of what we saw were Shrikes, Cara Caras, Swallow Tail Kites, Limpkin, red shoulder hawks, wood storks, all the egrets and herons, alligators, deer and alot of cattle. This is not a tourist destination per se, but a good look at the ecosystem of this area. Make sure you bring your binoculars.
Beautiful little campsite for the night! We stayed in the hammock campground and had no problem with our 34’ skoolie. This will become a regular stop for us!
Fun drive , I have been to this place a few times, saw at least 30 deers and some wild hogs.
They also have a nice campsite with giant trees, you can literally be there with a 100 degrees weather and still be cool because of nature.
Easy drive from any major city, nice getaway for families.
Two camping areas. One shaded and one not...basically an open field. Sites are a little close in the shaded section but the are pretty good size so you have plenty of room. Bring your own water and toilet. They have a vault toilet, but this was not in a usable condition. I disposed of my gray water there and that was it.
A nice campground. I’ll go back for a longer stay...hopefully away from a hunting weekend. Gravel roads are well maintained and passable with any car. There are some offshoot roads that you need a little clearance with. No problem for my outback. There is a small store and gas about ten minutes away for needed supplies.
Been here twice while visiting LaBelle/Clewiston. My hubby rode is bike while I toured in the car. Cell service is sketchy. Wildlife is abundant (gators, birds, raccoons, snakes).

There is a rustic camping field and a few sites under the hammock. I would not suggest RVs under the hammock as the trees are low.
Beautiful spot for dry camping. Make sure to bring everything you need, because their are no amenities except a vault toilet (which I did not venture into). We stayed in hammock camp with our 36 foot travel trailer. The only downside is the mosquitos, which were pretty bad, even in late October. There is a convenience store about 15 minutes from camp if you need something during the day.
I nice way to spend a weekend afternoon to check out. A good place to hike and explore. Make sure that you carry enough water when you are going. It is a must. Stay on the trails mostly will keep your feet dry, unless there was a rain burst then make sure you use rubber boots to tromp around. There are snakes that you have to be aware of as you are walk on the trails. Always pick up after yourself. I can't tell you how many times i have picked up trash that people have left.
