Well it's lil better they pay the best on south side better than their neighbors at least. I use to pop a tire every time I would go there but since I bought only new tires they haven't been popping so they must be getting better at cleaning their roads.
SHADY SCAMMERS. went in to scrap out a refrigerator, which according to several online sources weighed more than 300 lbs. they marked it at 270. while i was unloading the fridge, i noticed a couple items that i was interested in purchasing. i brought them to the dock to get them weighed. there was a guy there that helped me move them from the dock edge to the scale. they said the combined weight was 185 lbs, which i thought was hight, but didn't think much of at the time. when i thought back, i remembered the guy that helped me move the parts left his right foot on the scale while they were weighed. i weighed the items when i got home. combined weight was 125 lbs. shady thieves!
Always a pleasure to recycle here. The guys at the dock are helpful and friendly, even in this extreme heat. In the yard the operators are just as good. Plus they always call me by name and that's a plus plus in my book which makes me a loyal customer. Highly recommend!!
6-23-2025: Run and avoid at all costs if you see one of these trucks hauling a rolloff dumpster. The trucks are in very poor repair and hazardous to the public roadways. Was driving on I37 (south San Antonio) when one of their drivers driving slow in the right lane. He was causing traffic congestion and forcing drivers to pass him on the left. While passing him, a golf ball sized piece of debris (rock or concrete) hit my windshield immediately cracked it halfway. I immediately contacted River City Steel and Recycling and reported it to FRANK the fleet manager. FRANK asked me to call back the next day while he researched the issue. Called back the following afternoon (6-24-25) where he was ‘unavailable’ and thus far has not returned my call. So now I am stuck having to purchase a new windshield for my VW to tune of $853. River City Steel’s vehicles are DANGEROUS and should not be licensed to be on the road. River City Steel’s business practices and customer service are atrocious as they do not take any level of responsibility for their drivers or condition of their vehicles while operating on public road ways. It is completely irrational to think you can put these vehicles on the road, cause damage to other people’s cars and then absolve yourself of the damages you cause. Do not do business with this company or FRANK at River City Steel’s and Recycling.
I've been going here for about 2 years and never had a problem, rarely have to wait and always met with a smile. Sometimes the getting g on the scale gets backed up but that's anywhere. Great place to do business with.
This place was fine under private ownership. They were bough out and now it’s a disaster.
Been sitting in my truck for 25 minute to weigh out. Not a single truck has been processed. The new company has made everything harder and slower. Weigh in unload weigh out getting paid. Everything is more difficult. I’m done. Find a local place cause this one has been ruined
What rolling in at 4:50 the guy at the gate seen me pulling in in the turning lane and as soon as you see me going he starts closing the gate and I remember faces

Show up early. I showed up 30 minutes before closing on Saturday at noon and got turned away after a 45minute drive because they were closed. Need to change their business hours on here or stay open until their business hours are closed. It was just a small pickup truck load.
I want to start by saying that this place used to be 5 stars across the board. You can find anything and everything you need as far as metal goes. I have been going there about once week every week for 5 plus years. The machine operators in back are awesome. Always quick to help and actually know what they are doing. Raymundo and Friday. They are pretty much the reason I will continue to do business there. The last year or so customer service is declining. And from the look of it, So is employee morale. The woman who walks around yelling at everyone , Im told is the owners wife. I'm sorry but She obviously has no idea how to run this business but sure acts like she does. FYI You should never yell at your employees in front of customers. Then there is some new guy in the back that l am guessing is supposed to be running things back there has no clue what he is doing. Sure can't separate metal, and is horrible at directing us on where to go. But he is back there yelling orders to the guys that I know have been there for years, And from what I can see they know what they are doing. That's degrading your tenured employees for what is essentially a glorified babysitter? ( Hey owners, Just so you know he is losing you money and you pay him too!) The crew that used to look happy and made everything run smooth around there seem to be disappearing. I truly hope this is not the end of this company. It would be a damn shame. I can't believe how you talk to your customers. It's appauling! My name is right there. Please do not act like a child and pretend my review is fake. Google does know. And so does God!
I've gone there with my husband and just sat in the passenger seat while everything was being pulled off the trailer, now it was my turn to haul metal by myself, employees were very helpful and communitive. Very satisfied with the service and the amount received back for metal scrap....thank you...
No help from employees! Asked price on something and they just looked up from their cell phone and guessed it! Went to Ashley steel next door and they were half the price! I would've bought from river city if they just looked in their price list and didn't just sit there scrolling tictok! And Ashley is alot more knowledgeable when it comes to building! They couldn't answer any questions here!
Came in to get everything for our new metal roof and of course they had it all! Ricardo was super helpful and went over every detail and made sure we had everything we needed! Will definitely recommend it to everyone for their metal needs! I also loved how they had the names on sample pieces so you're not guessing what you need!

I enjoy coming here with all my scrap metal for recycling. They seem to pay a bit more than others and have all the prices displayed prominently. Everyone is always polite and helpful when I’m there. It’s right off the highway and I’m always in and out quickly.
*Edit* Reducing my 5 star to a 1 star because my last visit was infuriating. Total confusion regarding the process of weighing and paying. Including arguing with equipment operators who were passing the message from their radio that I needed to leave the metal I came for where it was, drive back up front to get weighed, then come back and get the metal. I tried explaining that it would be easier for everyone if I took the metal to the front and weighed it or weighed my car with metal then without but no one was listening. Then we try to jump through the hoops except everyone is standing around, no idea who is staff and who isnt but universally ignored by everyone until someone happens by whose job is it to help me and of course they act very frustrated as if I complicated their work day. I'm sure if we followed their process, things would go smoothly but there is no way of knowing what that is and everyone on the lot acts like its some secret club rather than looking out for confused customers.
I absolutely love shopping for used metal here for various projects. Nothing like walking off with 500 lbs of steel beams, armor plating, barbed wire, etc for a little over $100 bucks.
River City Steel is a great asset to the city of San Antonio. The guy in charge of the work orders Mr Tomas has been very courteous for many years. And the guy who does the cutting of materials Mr Javier is very precise on doing his job. They make me feel right at home. Service was horrible. I was told i would get a call back and never did . I called back after 2hrs of not hearing from them and Robert in sales answer the phone I give him my info and he told me the guy that makes the orders was not there . I informed him I would have to go elsewhere and his reply was go ahead and go wow . I will never do business with them again
