What clients say about Wild Cow Springs Campground in Kingman (AZ)
Its a pine oasis in the high desert. Its gorgeous, cool, and quiet with clean bathrooms but is a paid campground. Bring several bundles of wood, the availability of harvestable wood is not likely. Good spots throughout the campground, shaped like a needle with more bathrooms concentrated towards the point where you come in and the eye being at the back. If you approach from flag mine road you can exit via the emergency evacuation route that becomes Blake Ranch rd for some truly spectacular views.
The campgrounds were actually quite beautiful, specially in that area of Arizona. There were a lot of trees with nice shade and the fee was $8.
The downsides, is that it was very hard to get. It has 2 roads to arrive, and I took the one that is on the eastern side, which was very long and hard even for a 4x4 to traverse.
Th3 western road which I took on the way out, was much nicer since there is a town close to it that is fully paved.
Still, I don't recommend you try to pull a trailer or RV here at all.
The bathrooms were vault toilets, with no toilet paper, so bring your own. Instead, it seems people wiped themselves off with the walls of the toilets.
My roommate and I have been exclusively camping dispersed on this trip, nothing established. We've driven on some pretty rough roads and we powered through it.
Don't read any more reviews, don't die, stay away. Whoever said they made this road on their little compact car, that is not a real human, that is the Grim Reaper. We're not even in a compact car like that, and still absolutely not. It is not worth it.
We were 80% certain that we were going to die, from a number of ways. I cannot imagine any vehicle that I would want to drive this road on.
For inexpensive camping in a maintained, but rustic Campground, definitely 5 stars. Just one other camper there on a Saturday night. Road is still full of rutts, but not impassable. I saw a minivan up there.
Great location, but recent rains have created deep ruts across and down the road, just need to straddle the ruts and go slow on deep ones. Not a problem if you take it slow. Site recommends 4x4 and no trailers/camper. Someone was up there with Ford escape and another person had a van, I towed my 16' scamp with no trouble, although the wheels do follow the 4runner, which made it a little easier to navigate the obstacles. I wouldn't go much bigger due to the tight turns, and once you start on certain stretches, you're committed. No cell service at camp, which is nice, but you can get a signal on the final hill down into camp, and if you walk out the back of the camp up the trail a way, it's hit and miss but available if needed. Has fire pits, picnic tables, and multuple toilet facilities. No water or electricity Well worth the time and effort, you want be dissipointed.
Depends on what you were looking for. Definitely not a place to take an RV. Road is very rough to get in. It is beautiful after you get there. It is secluded.
Too mant ATV's they took camping spots without paying treating like day use . Too many campers that would staw,pay overnight turned away because of ATV's parking in campground
We went camping here for Thanksgiving of 2020 to avoid gathering. It was a nice place. I drove a Toyota Corolla but that last mile or so definitely scraped the bottom of my vehicle a few times which was not my favorite. If I were to go back I'd definitely see if we can backpack the last few miles instead or wait until we have a higher clearance vehicle.
Love the wild cow springs campground! It's secluded and the camping spaces are spaced apart nicely so that you don't feel that you're on top of each other. It's probably a good thing that the access is 4x4 recommended because it would be very crowded if it were easy to get to!
This a beautiful place in the forest. 16 campsites with a hers/his vault toilet. No water as others have reviewed. The plus that I found was the bear proof trash bins. The road in starts put urban, then turns good dirt into not very good dirt and finishes with a great two lane dirt finale.
We made it there in a 2wd Ford Edge but the road is pretty steep and I would have felt better in 4wd vehicle. The campsite itself is nice and not crowded at all. However the rangers did come thru late at night and early in the morning. I think they were probably trying to catch people making fires during a fire ban but I ended up waking up at around 4:45.
Roads are plowed and this is a beautiful site! Class b vans can fit! Song bird and squirrels ! 8 .00 per day camping big rocks and a stream to look at. Atv and 4 wheel drive come through all the time. It has fire grilling pits and vaulted toilets and trash bear containers . Will come back again
Made it to this campground in my scion xb! Super desolate! Had the entire place to myself! Not even one person drove by the entire time! If you need an escape from humanity this is the perfect place to go!
We made it there with a minivan, you can make it with a front wheel drive vehicle, but it should have some clearance. We also kept up momentum to prevent getting stuck. The road never felt unsafe, it just has some washes throughout the path so just keep moving and you'll do fine. There isn't a lot of room to park a vehicle at any of the campsites so a trailer or popup are kinda no-nos. Most of the campsites are not level. It's beautiful there and quiet (at least when we went). The kids had a fantastic time. The bats eating the insects near the campground lights made for great evening entertainment! Don't worry they don't come near people, they just want to eat the bugs.
It would of been better if the rangers would of come by earlier instead of 10:30 at night then decided to dump the trash after waking us up to check our permit that was supposed to be on the number poll that isn't even there. Other then that it was a great place. Looking forward to staying again very soon.
The road is rough and Google gives bad directions so look for signs. The wash through the campground had no water (July 2019). The sites are quite limited for flat surface to put a tent and I don't think a trailer could make it up the switchbacks. There were several pit toilets but no water. Sites had tables and fire rings, but there was a burning ban. I saw lots of folks enjoying off road vehicles. The sites have many large trees for shade.
Definitely secluded! While you can get up there without 4WD, note that weather changes quickly up there and even when there is no rain forecasted... It can still rain and leave you stranded.
The road is a bit rough but a two wheel drive truck or SUV can navigate with little difficulty. Nice secluded area with campsites or day use area with campfire pits and picnic tables. Plenty of trees and we watched birds, elk and deer. Beautiful views from the road of mountains and valleys. Cooler, so bring a jacket as no fires are allowed at this time.
Very clean, the campsites are spaced out nicely and have picnic benches and fire pits with grates. There is a small spring that flows along the back side of the campsites. We had a great time!
Great time! Very tranquil and cool. We had the place to ourselves. Had a friend come to our camp site. As far a needing a 4 x 4 to get there tell it to my Juke. The Juke is a bit high off the ground. Just took it slow and watched where my tires were going. It is steep with switchbacks. Some spots are for only one vehicle. Few times ran into another vehicle going the opposite way. One of us backed up until there was enough clearance. The locals are friendly. All the people we met were friendly as well. They have posted "Mountain Grade Curves" along the road. Highly recommend the trip if you want to get away but still be close to civilization.
Primitive but refreshing camp, high clearance vehicles advised, Vault toilets, dry camp so bring water, Beautiful views, trails, and roads to explore, a lot of wildlife.
