What clients say about Shoreline Recycling & Transfer Station in Shoreline (WA)

I've brought my trash here several times and had no issues which would get five stars. Today they are closed with no explanation and that gets one brown star. Averages to two stars.

They make it so simple to deal with trash & recycling that doesn't have a curbside option. Everything is efficient, clearly marked, and easy. Feels rare these days to try to do something and have it just flow right along without unexpected wrinkles. It feels so nice to have a needed service work so well.

One of the most clean, organized transfer station. The people that work there are nice too.

The people managing and running this transfer station are great...friendly and helpful. Went to drop a ton of cardboard boxes and styrofoam. You follow the blue line (for recycling) and park right next to the big containers. There are specific containers for clothes/textiles, cardboard boxes, styrofoam, large and small appliances etc. No $$ for dropping off recycling materials.

The Shoreline Recycling And Transfer Station is one of the best kept secrets in King County. They have phenomenally good recycling capabilities, including refrigerators, mattresses, plastics, and Styrofoam.

2 women at the front were extremely rude and disrespectful, don’t know how they still work there with all these complaints

Did you ever move into a new place and buy multiple furniture pieces you had to put together? And then wonder what you were gonna do with all those boxes and Styrofoam? Like try to parse it out over several recycling cycles? I was able to recycle basically everything here for free, and they make it very easy. If possible, I would suggest a weekday, I didn’t have to wait at all.

The employees are so nice and friendly!!!... easy to figure out what to do and where to go. Super quick. I love the water sounds in the big tires on the way out... always makes me smile.

Easily drop off trash, recycling, yard waste. Usually fast in-and-out (the longest I ever waited was 5 minutes) and the staff are friendly and helpful.

The employees here are so nice, and will educate you about what to throw away and where. It’s easy to get in and out of, as well as being quick and simple to navigate. I’m very thankful for the services the employees and this place provide.

Can't use their services if you're from Seattle. They were very nice but they turned us away and told us we were required to go to the north station facility. Womp womp.

I do not understand how people can be so miserable and rude to customers, not only do I pay for your job with my property taxes. I am a paying customer when I come there, what a miserable existence they must live… Rudest people I’ve had to endure in a while.. One of these days somebody’s gonna put these people in check and it’s not gonna be pretty… What a miserable, miserable miserable place, go get a job somewhere else if you’re that miserable

Let me lead by saying, I am a huge fan of secure loads, and I support patrolling and enforcing secure loads. I am even willing to accept/pay a citation if I am assessed as operating an unsecure or unsafe load on public roadways. The Shoreline transfer station, located at 2300 N 165th street in Shoreline, WA, is sending customers who arrive at their facility, with a load the transfer-station-employee deems unsafe, back onto public roadways with the “unsafe load” rather than allowing the patron to unload the alleged unsafe-load. If the transfer-station-employee is correct that the load is unsafe, they are furthering a dangerous situation but sending the patron back onto a public roadway rather than allowing them into the transfer station to unload the material. Are transfer-station-employees trained and certified to know what an unsecure load is? Upon arrival to the transfer station as a customer, the transfer-station-employee will, from the vantage point of their cashier podium, caste a gaze upon your truck and trailer and decide if it is secure. They do not check to see if ropes are fastened or straps are tight. They do not care if the rope will actually stop the debris of plastic or lumber that can easily slip past the rope that is draped over the vehicle’s payload, they seem to only care that there is the presence of something that resembles a strap or tie-down set on top of the vehicle’s payload. If you pass this visual assessment from approximately 20 feet away you will be admitted to the transfer station to unload. One patron with a wildly unsafe load containing loose lumber that can easily fit past 1.5” ropes/straps and plastic wrap that can easily be affected by the wind and thrown onto the road will be admitted as long as they have taken the time to lazily throw a rope over their vehicle’s payload. Another patron who arrives with a single heavy refrigerator appliance situated deep into the well of a pickup or trailer will be turned away if they have not taken the time to drape a rope or strap over the cargo. By comparison, the first patron’s load may have resulted in litter and/or dangerous situations already on their way to the transfer station, while the second patron has a much safer load that, short of overturning the vehicle, will not result in escaping cargo. However, the first patron will be admitted while the second patron will be turned away. I recognize the transfer station’s policy and signage states they will assess patron’s a $25 fee for unsecured loads, however the truth of the matter is that employees encourage you to leave rather than pay the $25. In either case, whether you leave or pay the money, the way a “secure load” is being assessed is comical at best, but on most days frustrating and inconsistent. This is also the only transfer station I have ever seen enforce any-such policy, isn’t this a police and road-safety matter, not a transfer-station matter? I was the second patron from the example above on Feb 23, 2024, and after watching the transfer-station-employees admit payloads I would not want to be caught driving behind, and then turn me away to go dawn a strap over my appliance situated safely in the bed of my pick-up I was frustrated. To return to the transfer station thirty-minutes later only to have one of the transfer-station-employees who turned me away greet me with the patronizing phrase “look how beautiful that strap is, that wasn’t so hard?” I was furious. Nothing they are doing with their visual assessment for the presence of a rope/strap is avoiding litter, improving safety, or encouraging best practices. I hope Shoreline transfer station would consider adjusting their practices to either properly train employees on assessing secure-cargo, or give up their frivolous routine of admittance based on the presence of a rope/strap.

Did an annual clean up for my garage it was super cluttered but got it all cleaned up and loaded up the kids to take them here they loved seeing how everything worked got excited seeing all the machines operate. Staff is super friendly and helpful had 30 paint cans needed to throw out, couldn’t dump them here, but the guy told me where I could take them

They are taking styrofoam (no flexible/ soft foam) and plastic bags again, free. They will reject any Seattle residents — you must use SPU's special item pickup, or dropoff at Recycle My Styrofoam near U Village, both are free. Seattle residents pay Seattle Public Utilities — this facility is in Shoreline, and shockingly, is not in Seattle.

Rude staff. Informed of the new additional fee for a mattress. Once at the window to pay, charged the fee for the mattress and box spring. 'we saw you had 2 mattresses!'. No, just one mattress and one box spring. Doesn't matter. Increases price another $60. How does this make sense? Well, according to the cashier, the mattresses are catching fire in landfills and are being used for insulation. Okaaaay.....why the fee for the box spring? No answer, but handed the info flyer. Attitudes there have changed, new fees just go into effect without notice. Welcome to king county.

Don't come here if you're a Seattle resident. King county page for this transfer station does specify, at time of writing, in green box near top of page, that you must both be a king county resident and also not a resident of Seattle nor Milton to use this facility. For Seattle residents, you have two options for dropoff, a north and south transfer station.

Came by to drop off a carload of recycling. Instead of helping and allowing me through. I was told to turn around and head to the Seattle Transfer station because I lived in Seattle instead of shoreline! I don’t live that far from Shoreline. Then say that on your website. Not helpful at all!!! When I got to the Seattle Transfer Station, I was told to throw all my recycling in the trash because they got too lazy to empty the three containers of recycling. These transfers stations are so lame.

Horrendous customer service! The two women in the guard booth seemed to want to do everything possible to keep from helping me. They were hostile and immature from the beginning of our interaction. Neither have any business being in customer service and should be fired immediately.

The staff was very quick to inform they do not accept Styrofoam nor anything without proof of King County address (except Seattle). Staff said they had not accepted it in a bit and their website reflects that (I see the website last updated Feb 2019 does not state such).

Very kind and humble workers. They took me in quickly did a great job for me. I usually go to another place where I know them like a family. But needed this done right away and I seriously appreciate everything they did for me. Thank you so much.

Just because a person rents a Handy-Andy rental does not mean they live in Seattle... just have to say that before I point out the people inside the facility moving garbage do a wonderful job. Yet if the job of the people in the weigh station/booth is to make the experience as difficult as possible, they succeeded.

You need to show proof of residence or work in king county, but NOT SEATTLE (and Milton). The staff couldn't be more helpful and friendly. And they accept so many types of materials for recycling! It's not trash, it's a resource!

Two of the staff went above and beyond to help when my coworker lost something around the bins. I only know the name of one of the extremely helpful people, but thanks to Mike and his coworker for all your patience on Friday, December 6th, 2019!

We had a bit of an emergency and had to clean out my cousin's garage in a hurry. We arrived 10 minutes before closing on Sunday and every person was extremely helpful, cheerful and friendly. I have read some negative reviews where posters were whining about the rules. That's really not the staff's fault that the new rules no longer benefit your business. I cannot say enough nice things about the staff here.

The employee at the counter needs to get her attitude in check. Rude, impatient and absolutely unacceptable customer service for a public place that we as taxpayers pay their salaries for. Tried to drop off sorted construction debree, which I was previously told they accept. She wouldn't even talk to me. Closed the window on me. Fortunately the gentleman on the inside was very willing to talk to me and give me the information I needed to go to the right place. If you can't be helpful then don't work in the service industry. And yes, when you work at a register window, even at the dump, you are in the service industry. Don't let your bad attitude or negative energy out on customers.

Not happy about their new “sorting” rules. I brought in a dump trailer of mixed construction debris and was told they no Longer accepted mixed debris as of February. This better not be true! What are we supposed to do now? Take all our trash to the more expensive city of Seattle facilities? I live ten blocks from this place and it looks like I won’t be patronizing there anymore.
