The entire trail is either incline or declining very few flat areas. Overall though mildly strenuous and very cool. Lots to see down there especially after the foliage is gone.

Super fun hike, even though it's a tough one. Heading down to the abandoned buildings takes around 2 hours, and we spent another 2 hours exploring before the 2 hours back up and out. 8+ miles for us today!

The abandoned settlement of Lost Cove is often accessed from NC ... I took the route from Erwin, TN, along the Nolichucky River (on the train tracks which is, technically, trespassing). The most amazing thing about the this place is its remoteness. One had to be very self sufficient to live there. Unfortunately, a fire several years ago destroyed many of the structures. What remains is very dilapidated ... but, for now, Lost Cove remains an interesting place.

Fantastic. I loved seeing this old town. It's much easier if you start at flat top and hike downhill and walk back along the railroad tracks if you have the option.

Beautiful, challenging hike into an old ghost town from the moonshine days. There's two ways in, one from Tennessee side over train tracks and river, the other from flat top. I've only done the flat top side which is a VERY steep 2.5 miles through an easy to follow trail into the cove. Apparently the train side is a little less steep but longer. There's 2 houses left standing, a cemetary, old truck and a few chimneys and such to explore. Definitely worth the effort. We didn't see a single other person when we went which made it even more eerie :) Please take out what u bring in, some people just leave there trash and plastic bottles in a fire pit which I guess they think is o.k bc it's in a pile? Leave it nice for the next time. Better yet use a camel pack, much easier to carry and nothing to throw away :)
