Usually, when I see historical marker, it's about the first white person who did something on what is now the United States of America. Not only is this place beautiful, it told a very honest history of how poorly the state of Rhode Island treated the indigenous people who had been here for thousands of years.
Happened upon this little nugget of history by chance. Learned more on Google. What a peaceful view! Just quiet and birds. No other soul in sight. Trying to picture the original inhabitants and their daily life there.
Hidden piece of hidden history! Small grassy area on a hill overlooking the water. A fence outlines the walls of a big wooden palisade by Narragansett and other tribes, who lived and traded there in the summer hundreds of years ago. New info to this lifelong resident, which saddens me greatly. Fascinating to learn.
Nice open area to walk around. There is a memorial in the center which says "Memorial of Narragansett and Niantic Indians. The unwavering friends and allies of our fathers erected by the State of Rhode Island, 1883." It is an old Native American trading post.
