Just wanted to share my recent experience. First, Paula in check in and Tim at the window we're amazing! Super friendly, very knowledgeable and they made the experience so easy and pleasant!
I removed one star because the process to get a reservation for the Cranston location was not very user friendly. I checked through out the week and even week prior and there's nothing and then on the day of, slots become available.
Other than that, love the fact that it goes as reservations now, makes it more seamless, just need to do better with the online reservation process. But thank you Paula and Tim! You guys are an asset to the DMV!!Jan 22, 2026 -
I’ve beeen call everyday for two weeks and went online and no help. Everytime I call they tell there nothing they can do or they don’t answer the phone. Kinda sickening how is a government building that unresponsive or understufffed might wanna fix that isssiee I’ve been tryna pay my lives ifff for. Year now

Just went to the Rhode Island DMV and had the most pleasant DMV experience of my life! There was zero wait time and staff were efficient and kind.

At 3:30 today I went to convert my Florida driver's license to rhode island even though all my documents were complete employee number 5 turned me down

I have been to many DMVs. This was the absolute most efficient and has very pleasant staff. I interacted with 4 employees - all incredibly helpful. Their set up works well with check in on one floor and services on another - excellent!

I went to get drivers license and change my title and the process was smooth, the employees guide me through it. Especially the employee Frank on the window he was amazing and took his time to explain everything to me very detailed and was extremely patient. I’m very happy with the service provided.

Inefficient system — even with the appointments, we had to spend 2 hours here in various lines, and that was with all paperwork already prepared properly. The person working at desk 5 upstairs was rude, unhelpful, and particularly condescending when asked direct and reasonable clarifying questions — again, even though all of my paperwork was prepared properly, and the questions I asked were not answered anywhere on the DMV website or anywhere on the paperwork. The people working at check in were polite and helpful.

I would like to thank Judith for her utmost kindness and professionalism. She was a person who knew her job and cared about helping people. I believe it takes time to take information to be put into a database from other areas .And it must be thorough. In closing they are trying to make a better change. Things of course could be different. But we must learn patience. Thanks again Judith who was working with me in both 28 on 12 September 25. Also during Operation Standdown Rachael really helped me update my license. Great people who truly care.

Just took my twins to Cranston DMV for their driving tests. Dan was our examiner and I couldn’t have been happier. He provided clear directions to the kids and encouraged them to ask questions. His personality was definitely a bright moment for a very intimidating test.
The process following the test was very quick and efficient inside the DMV.

What do you want its the DMV not Disney World. Its a pain if you don't have everything checked off and completed. You might have to go back a few times. I did. Thwy have all the resources you need but sometimes you are missing so.ething or owe money for who knows what. Once that is all sorted its pretty smooth all things considered. If you don't have violations most of this can be done online.

Just moved to Rhode Island due to military orders. Cannot get an appointment no matter what I try. Today, we went in and asked for help making an appointment— we were told we need to check every day at 9 am to see if there was an appointment for that day. Mind you, we both work full time and this was our first day off together in 3 months, and when I explained that, and asked how do I register my car and change my address, the woman shrugged at me and said “I don’t know.” Don’t move here!

I live 10 min from this DMV and i have no idea whyyy it keeps booking me an hour away to other DMV ,
But this one is not available
My license expires in 2 weeks , August 5 .
And the only available appointments
is for August 28 or further out on dates
But if you try to renew 1 month in advance the DMV SAYS YOU CANT its too soon !?!?!?!Jul 22, 2025 -

I’ve tried numerous times now to register my vehicle in RI. Every appointment I go to, new information is told to me than what is on the official DMV website. EVERY SINGLE TIME. I’ve read over the checklist and have all paperwork, and literally done everything to do it. It’s aggravating especially when you should train your workers to have better customer service skills and how to fully communicate what is needed the first time instead of having this issue. Lack of effective communication, customer service skills, and organization.

Middletown, Wakefield, and Woonsocket will have you jumping through loops for the simplest tasks. Had three separate appointments and got sent out each time. Went to Cranston and was in and out in 20 minutes. Thank you to Paula at check in and Kim in T&R for your help

I CANNOT get an appointment for the life of me. I recently moved here out of state and need to change a lot of things over and anytime I look to book online it says no reservations currently available, please check back. Like I just NEED an appointment already. Hard enough trying to balance my work with all of this.

The women at the desks are always extremely rude. I don’t understand how management doesn’t monitor interactions. There’s also usually a police presence in the building and I didn’t see one officer there today and the place was absolutely packed. DID NOT MAKE ME FEEL SAFE AT ALL. Ton of sketchy people walking around. There was over an hour wait to get a license. Absolutely ridiculous! What’s the point of making appointments if you just have to wait an hour?

I have never had an easy time at the RI DMV. I thought the Mass RMV was bad but the RI makes them look like superstars. Closing at 3:15 when most people work till at least 4 is awful. Their phone system makes it almost impossible to talk to a real person. I'm not sure what I expected from an office run by the RI government. Add this to the many reasons I'll be moving out of the state *Edit* RI DMV replied that they do not close till 4 but I have been in the office at 3:45 still finishing my paperwork and was asked to either go to a window or leave. Also it's their customer service reps on the phone that stop answering at 3:15 not that they ever answer

This is insane I understand the you have to make an appointment, but the next available date is a month away. We can help you . That what they say and plus they give you a phone number the no one answers ever. How this is possible and the worst part is the they know they can do it because no one else can help you that the saddest part. this need to change

Bravo!! I made an appointment online and was out the door within the hour with exactly what I came in for. Everyone I spoke with was extremely kind and pleasant to work with. Things felt organized and the process was painless. I'm so surprised by how easy they made a visit to the DMV!

The DMV gets a bad rap. But if you are nice/civil and have your documentation, it doesn’t have to be a bad experience. We (I was helping my elderly parents complete an out-of-state process) had a great experience today (26 Sept 2024). If you get assigned to window #9, you will be in good hands. Just be sure to have all the documentation you need and the process will go smoothly.

Today my daughter had a road test at 9 AM. She was so nervous, but Dan made her feel so comfortable and assured her there was nothing to be nervous about. These workers do such a good job in the oppressive heat. It was almost 90° this morning at 9am. Thank you so much for your hard work. After passing the test, we went inside the DMV and had a very pleasant experience. Everyone was very nice and helpful. They have a great team working at this facility. Thank you again

This place takes forever, long lines, slow service, angry and unhelpful employees! Be sure to bring a long book or a tablet with a movie to watch because you will be here for a while. Checking in takes an hour or more, then multiple hours to wait for your number to be called; all you are to these people is a number
