I have sold one car to CarMax. They made the process simple and seamless. I obtained a very reasonable offer for my 2025 Volvo and it was honored at all locations. When I brought my car in to sell it, an employee walked me through the process quickly and efficiently. They have hot tea and coffee while you wait. The waiting area is clean and comfortable.

Ian was the best car salesman I've ever interacted with or worked with. Sincerely appreciate his attention to details, knowledge on German motors and just being a great all around human being. I never felt pressured and appreciate you taking the time to get to know me and my situation. THANK YOU!

Sherry helped me and made the whole process of selling my car very pleasant and a piece of cake. The 5 stars go to Sherry

CarMax is all the good things I've heard and more. 1. You can wander freely and look inside, sit in, unlocked cars. 2. Helpful,no pressure staff 3. You can actually return a car!! I ended up doing that and it was quick and easy! Truly amazing.

I recently sold my 2018 Ram 2500 to Carmax and it couldn’t have been any easier. Uploaded all necessary documents, was quoted a fair price and scheduled an appointment. Met Lily who walked us through the process and we were out in 30 minutes with a check for the full amount. Lily was awesome by the way, thank you for an awesome experience.

For the third time we just finished buying a car through CarMax. Each time was a very pleasant experience. I don't often make recommendations but I do in the case of CarMax. Thank you

2nd time visiting the Clackamas/Milwaukie location. Daughter found her dream car. Ian helped us & was very polite, patient & pleasant to work with. The entire process from start to finish was less than 2-hours. No haggling, no back & forth negotiations, all questions & concerns answered & did not feel pressured like I have been from dealers in the past. I feel good about the service, the process, the quality of service & time spent going over details, etc. Highly recommend--absolutely no complaints. Ian was amazing & hopefully we will be working with him again in the near future for my other daughter's car!

I went to six different dealerships before coming to CarMax, and every single one wasted my time. No urgency, no respect for my schedule, and no real effort, which was especially disappointing when buying a Corvette. From the moment I worked with Pablo at CarMax, the experience was completely different. He actually gave me the time of day, answered every question honestly, and made the entire process smooth and stress free. No games, no pressure, just straightforward and professional service. Pablo and the CarMax team made this the easiest and most seamless car buying experience I have ever had. This is how dealerships should operate. I highly recommend asking for Pablo if you are serious about buying a car.

Keven was awesome. He helped us get a beautiful new vehicle and made the process very easy. He took good care of a very important person of ours. God bless him and we highly recommended him as he took great care and provide a great experience and service on the purchase of this new vehicle. Shoutout Keven.

Honestly it was one of the easiest vehicle transactions that I have ever had. They gave me right in the middle of my estimated value based on KBB. The whole process took about 45min from me pulling up to me walking out with a check. It was also great to walk away not feeling like I needed a stiff drink and a smoke (I don't smoke) or thinking about how much I despise working with used cars salesmen. Thank you, CarMax

The follow-up and communication that occurred after my initial review is worthy of updating. There was definitely some misunderstanding that contributed to my initial 1-star review. While the outcome overall isn't what I had hoped, the efforts made and the willingness to refund my shipping fee have restored some faith in their business practices. Alexis was kind and clarified the process. One appreciates the efforts a business makes to smooth things over when they go awry.

I give it a mid rating as CarMax does make the process of selling your vehicle fairly painless and it is a nice way to sell a car. However, this is the second time I have sold a vehicle to Carmax and I feel after two (maybe should have learned the first time, so that is on me) I should know that you are mostly putting a great deal of profit in their hands for that "ease". I recently sold a 2026 R1S Rivian with 950 miles and so new that it still smelled like right off of the lot - it had all of the plastic coverings on the screens, etc. The vehicle was just way too big for me and because I did not have a large note on the vehicle, I thought I could sell it, pay off the note and use the extra to purchase a smaller EV. The car I bought from Rivian was $78,000. The offer to me from CarMax was $64,000. I expected depreciation....but....that is crazy depreciation. I went in to speak to the manager a few days later. I said, "...I sold a vehicle in Las Vegas for $10,000 and saw it on the lot later for selling for $18,000, so I expected that I was not going to get the best deal..." She stopped me and said well that is not normal, we do not put that much additional price on a vehicle. I told her the reason I was questioning, is that I went on their site and the same vehicle but 2024s and 2025s with 9K to 15K are going from $69K to $78K and therefore I believe the 64K is a bit low. I told her the original salesman said he looked up comparables but I told her that there are no 2026s out there to compare and to please look again. She looked up the vehicles herself online to see what I was talking about and then went to the back room to speak with her team. She came out and said "...I learned a lot...." She said the Rivians are not selling and the prices are being dumped and this one will just end up going to auction, anyway. I begrudgingly took the deal - she said she could re-assess the next day when the deal expired, but chances are it would go down. I took the deal. Anyway, I went on the CarMax (Clackamas OR) site right now to look for a smaller EV to go purchase today or tomorrow (gullible me) and what do I see - my Rivian being sold on Clackamas site for $75,998 - so much for "dumping" or going to auction. Very shady.

CAR is a lemon!!! 2021 Passat & have had NOTHING but issues since the 90-day warranty expired!! Bought the car at the end of May 2025. It is sitting DEAD in my driveway as I type this on November 17th, 2025. Having it towed to a mechanic tmw. The battery/starter/alternator or something of that nature is out & the car will not start at all. The battery tests fine tho when I brought it in to get a new one. I have had it for 6 months. NO, I did not spend the thousands on an extended warranty because for what I am paying as a monthly note for this hunk of junk, I could not afford a dime more! But seriously, 6 damn months & its DEAD? SHAME ON YOU!! And, God forbid you need help from anyone after the sale! Its mostly thru their app or u have to leave message after message to get someone from the service department to call you back. When they DO call you back, it's like trying to schedule an appointment with Jesus himself! No thank you, CarMax. Next time I'd rather deal with the price haggling & "typical" car buying experience! At least when I have purchased gently used cars in the past, I have NEVER been stranded in a non-working vehicle, even YEARS after the purchase of sale!! Boo! 👎 I will be sure to pass along to ANYONE I know looking tombuy a vehicle...skip this way overhyped "new way" of purchasing a vehicle.

They say the experience is supposed to be worry free but this is misleading. Just because they have the prices on the cars in the lot doesn't mean it is worry free. I found a car that I liked and had it moved from another city. I then ran the VIN and realized there was an open recall which was odd since recalls are addressed by the dealer for free. I had a phone and text chat with someone that pushed back saying that CarMax doesn't address recalls and prefer if the individual addresses them. This makes no sense since they don't have to pay any money out of pocket for the recall. So then a few days later I called the CarMax facility and asked about the recall and they said they would address it. This inconsistency is baffling and when I asked about the change in position I was told “ there was a confusion about where I thought they would address the recall directly". I am not sure where this confusion came from as I specifically asked,” why can't you just send the car to an Audi dealership to have the recall addressed!" I at no time assumed or asked if CarMax would address the recall in their shop. Sounds like a lack of communication between internal departments to me. There should never be a car on any dealer's lot that has an open recall, they are free to get resolved. They have no excuse. I bought a car elsewhere as the recall back and forth really turned me off to them. Their cars are a little overpriced but I originally thought the extra cost was worth the less hassle. Less hassle was not the experience I had. It should also be noted that the three extended warranty companies they use have the worst reviews in the industry.

I was offered a much lower final price on my vehicle than the initial emailed offer. Because I couldn't drop off the vehicle within 7 days, the final offer price was lowered by a third! The staff gave some run-around non-reason of "market fluctuation", and refused to honor the initial offer amount, even with proof of email. I had already made the trip and didn't want to start the process over, so I left feeling ripped off. Do not do business with Carmax - it's a bait and switch

When I bought my car, the bumper was not attached correctly and they promised to fix it which it still isn’t fixed. They had to repaint and the pain it chipping. I took it to a reputable car shop and they said the paint is chipping due to not being finished by car max correctly. Don’t ever let them paint your car and if there is damage to the bumper don’t buy the car they won’t fix it

Great experience with the salesperson including multiple test drives and ultimately buying a vehicle. I have had a mixed experience with the business office including several administrative matters. The worst of it was my temporary trip permit which they accidentally set to expire the very same day it was issued. I didn’t notice until I got home that night and they had already closed. I called them the next morning. They were apologetic and had me drive back to get a replacement. I was pleasantly surprised to learn that they’d offer me a $50 meal reimbursement voucher for my trouble (lots of gas, driving without a valid trip permit, missing work the next morning). They said—and I remember this very clearly—that the only restriction was no alcohol. That made sense, and I’ve been through this process with several businesses before and felt like I understood how it would work. The only things written on the business card they gave me were: my name, reference number, “$50, no alcohol”, and contact info. So that and the brief conversation I had were what I had to work with. A week later I finally went out for the meal. 30-some bucks plus tip, total still under 50. I also discovered in the meantime that CarMax had left a tracker, which they use to locate cars on their lots and presumably track them during test drives, in my glove box. I’m not sure whether I was being tracked the whole time since taking possession of the vehicle. I went back to the business office and was surprised to hear “we’ll cover everything but the tip.” I, of course, tipped well thinking I was well under the $50 reimbursement cap. I mentioned they should consider adding that to their meal reimbursement cards or at least telling people, since such a policy is not obvious especially when customers are told the only limitation is no alcohol. They said they “always forget that’s not on there.” Sadly, in business, how these oversights and miscommunications come about matters little. What matters is that this procedure, which can feel to the customer like a bait and switch, is evidently standard practice (since they knowingly do not make an effort to inform of this limitation). Considering the point of the meal reimbursement is, I would guess, to keep me happy and from mentioning all the trouble with my trip permit in a review, having greater transparency, and actually making good on the $50 offer as verbally expressed, would make more sense. Ultimately, ll the fuss and gas back and forth was not even close to worth my prorated reimbursement. As for the tracker, the office representative kind of laughed it off like it also wasn’t uncommon for customers to find one weeks after a sale. I was surprised CarMax didn’t have better processes in place for this kind of thing. Missing the tracker at the end of a long day is understandable but I would’ve hoped they’d catch that it was still outstanding by the first time I returned to the store. I am not at all opposed to buying from CarMax in the future and still recommend them to my friends and family. But I have now learned to subject administrative matters like these to a heightened level of scrutiny that, if I were to deal with CarMax several more times in the future, could quickly become exhausting. Overall, I’m happy with my car and how I bought it but have been left bewildered by these interactions.

It’s been a few months since financing my car through CarMax and I can say I’m still as pleasantly satisfied today as I was when I first got my car in June! Omar M. was very kind and attentive to me, him and the location manager (sorry I forgot his name) even stayed late to help me close out this deal. My 2015 Toyota Yaris isn’t the craziest car, but it’s made me happy with its low maintenance! I would recommend CarMax 100%

2nd time I have purchased from CarMax and both times were excellent experiences. I really don't know why anyone would buy from anywhere else. Martin, the store manager, was particularly helpful, efficient, and engaging. I'll be back.... in 2-3 years! That said, the Service experience was very poor. Car was having wheels refinished as part of purchase agreement. Took a couple of hours. No problem. Car was brought around but not prepped as new purchase. Took another 20 minutes to get someone to bring car back, where I then proceeded to wait another 30-45. When the young lady brought the car back, she was incredibly rude and indifferent. The other Service staff (inside the waiting area) was busy on their phones and could care less how long I was waiting.

Aaron helped my kid pick a car a few days ago. They had very specific wants and probably looked at 20+ cars and Aaron was very knowledgeable and friendly and great to work with. I’ve bought several cars from Carmax locations in TX and like the no pressure philosophy. We had many questions about all the different makes and models and he was very helpful. I was in Portland to visit my kid and help with this purchase. If lived there I would buy a car for myself from Aaron. We encountered a hiccup with my bank here in Tx (and they were closed so I couldn’t get help) and the Carmax staff were great in helping me figure out the solution.

The best car buying experience I have ever had at the Clackamas store. As soon as we walked in the door we felt a different "vibe", unlike any other car lot. We didn't have an appointment, they were very busy. They greeted us, asked what we were looking for and told us we could walk around and look at anything and the doors were open. Kept us updated on the time frame until we could meet with a salesperson. No pressure EVER. No aggressive sales people asking us a million times if we needed help. When it was our time, our salesman was awesome! Ian was so friendly, down to earth and wasted no time in getting us test driving the vehicle we were interested in. He worked diligently to get us our new car and we are so happy! Very fair with our trade in as well. I cant say enough great things. We will never buy from any other car lot again! Ten stars!

I bought my new-to-me 2014 Kia Soul at the Milwaukie location. I've been out of a car for a year and have been let down with no luck at other dealerships. I finally found Carmax & it was literally the best experience I've had. My daughter & I felt so welcomed & we were in & out of there in 30 mins or less with the Express Pickup option. Christina aka "Granny" was the best! Thank you!

We just sold our truck through Carmax, we actually bought it there four years ago and it’s been a great truck. We bought a new to us Mazda Miata that we had shipped for free from Washington. CarMax kept us informed throughout the whole process and we couldn’t be happier. David and Tully were amazing, they made everything seamless. We highly recommend CarMax, we have had 3 very positive transactions with them. Go see David and Tully at the Clackamas CarMax!

ABSOLUTELY THE BEST CAR BUYING EXPERIENCE! I love the no haggle policy...I love the saleswoman, Phuong Srikajorn, that I dealt with... I love how they treated me and my sister (I took her with me for support because most car salesman are not looking out for the customer....CarMax definitely wanted the best for me!) ...I love how they went out of their way to make sure the vehicle was extremely clean and with a full tank of gas. I will recommend CarMax to anyone wanting to purchase a car. They went above and beyond!!! 5 Stars! Without a doubt, 5 STARS!!!!

My experience with CarMax was nothing less than spectacular. Lori was simply amazing! She walked me through each step of the process which was so easy, and explained everything perfectly. The only tough thing about the whole experience was actually making my selection. I would recommend to anyone that needs a car, give Lori a shout, she will take excellent care of you. In fact, the whole CarMax family was awesome right down to the last detail. I absolutely love my new Focus.
