Emerald Village is located in Spruce Pine, NC. It is a hidden gem that I highly recommend visiting. The campus is large so you can visit some attractions or all. I opted to tour the mine, visit the country store, visit the museum, and mine gems.
Besides the mine, there were extra exhibits in the building. One was about the mine and the other on tobacco. At one point there were 12 mines. The tour is of the Bon Ami Mine. Some of this is accessible but to get down to the mine there are railroad ties used for stairs.
The portion of the mine with the tour has everything labeled so you can read about it as you go. You just go to the top portion of the mine so it isn't claustrophobic. I was worried about that. Just watch your step as the railroad tracks are still there. They are easy enough to step over or go around but if you aren't paying attention could trip.
You can enjoy the views and waterfall while learning about the mine and seeing the equipment. I liked that they had some storyboards and the small building to see the rocks with the black light. It was a unique museum to learn about mining.
The country store was nice with the history of the medical office, post office and store replicas. The mill building had exhibits on twelve levels. A model railway exhibit, music room, black light room to see minerals. The only way to see this building was by stairs. This was the only part I didn't really care for but did enjoy parts of it.
I did the gem bucket from McKinney Mine. It was a large bucket so after I got a feel for it, I gave the rest of the bucket to some kids nearby.
A nice perk is they offer wifi to guests as I lost service in the remote location. So that helped me get to my next destination. I also liked ow well the attraction was marked and labeled so you knew where everything was.
Absolutely amazing. This place combines real mining history with hands-on fun, and the staff tie it all together with knowledge and kindness.
We started in the North Carolina Mining Museum and Discovery Mill complex, which are much bigger and better than we expected—historic equipment, photos, minerals, and clear explanations that make the local geology and mining story click. You can feel how important this area was (and still is) to gem and mineral history. The exhibits are well laid out, clean, and easy to follow, and the staff were happy to answer questions and point out details we would have missed.
The sluice mine was great for all ages. The setup is shaded, the water runs well, and the staff help identify finds on the spot. We pulled nice pieces of quartz and garnet and had a blast washing the gravel and sorting through our “treasure.” It’s the kind of activity that’s genuinely fun even if you’re not a hardcore rockhound.
The Black Light Mine Tour at night was a highlight. Under UV, the walls light up with fluorescent minerals—greens and purples glowing in a way you’ll never see in daylight. It’s unique, well organized, and the guide mixed science with storytelling in a way that kept everyone engaged. Pro tip: book ahead on busy weekends, arrive 30 minutes early, and bring a light jacket.
Another big plus is that Emerald Village is the permit hub for the Crabtree Emerald Mine. We picked up our permits here, got directions, safety info, and tool advice from staff who clearly know the site. Crabtree itself is rugged and authentic—no frills, real digging—so it was incredibly helpful to launch from Emerald Village with the right expectations. (Note: There are no facilities at Crabtree, so bring water, gloves, and sturdy shoes.)
Across the board, the staff were excellent —friendly, patient, and clearly passionate about the place. They helped with identification, shared bits of local history, and kept everything moving smoothly even with holiday crowds.
Practical tips: check hours and tour times in advance; wear closed-toe shoes; bring cash/card for buckets and the gift shop; and if you’re heading to Crabtree, pick up permits early in the day and allow time for the drive and the hike in. Parking was straightforward, signage is good, and there are restrooms on site at Emerald Village (not at Crabtree).
Bottom line: Emerald Village is a must-do —a rare mix of museum-quality history, memorable experiences (the blacklight tour is one-of-a-kind), and genuinely helpful staff. We left with great memories, a bag of finds, and a much deeper appreciation for the mountains’ “green fire.” Highly recommended.
We went at the time they open & we were the only ones around. Gem mining was a nice experience & you get quite a lot of gems from just the 15 gallon bucket. Mine contained ~90 gems, including some precious stones
This has been one of the best gem mines I have very been to. We love it there. Real mines you can pay to tour. A great gift shop and museum. I hope to be going back there soon.
My son and I went to both museums and had a wonderful time. We learned so much about the area and mines. We loved seeing all the musical instruments, the different stones and minerals and the uses of everything. We loved seeing the old mining equipment and the mine. The stores were also well stocked and we bought a great reference book, black light, a sifting box and some items made from local stone. We enjoyed our conversations with all those who worked there as well as a few families we interacted with. It was a great way to spend the day. There is a lot of stairs! So keep that in mind when planning.
This place is totally amazing! I absolutely loved everything about it. The 10-level museum is so cool - super fun to explore. The Bon Ami mine area was also awesome. We bought a native bucket to sift through and that was really fun. We got there in the morning and had the place to ourselves. I can’t wait to go back.

Emerald Village is an absolute gem in the North Carolina mountains! The historic mines and stunning scenery make for an unforgettable adventure. The views are beautiful, and there’s plenty to do for all ages, from panning for gems to touring the impressive mining museum. It’s a perfect mix of education, history, and outdoor fun. Highly recommend a visit if you’re anywhere near Little Switzerland — it’s a unique experience you won’t want to miss!
This was by far my favorite trip during my time in Asheville, NC. Nestled in the mountains beyond Little Switzerland this experience was one of a kind. I got a warm welcome and plenty of information as to my options for mining. Displays are availible of the potential yeilds from either site local to the gift shop. I personally saught the minerals as that site was just across the parking lot. Fee for entry was $25, $25 for tool rental with a $75 deposit thst is refinded at the end of your time. I spent around 3 or 4 hours hunting for rocks until I needed a break. During that break Sherry was supremely helpful identifying what I had found and with most of what I wanted im hand I returned my gear and tpured the shop. Sherry was also very personable demonstation the varipus items up for sale showing off the various flourscent items. Supremely great experience! I will certainly be back in the future!
This was a great little day trip. Awesome history, artifacts, and antique railroad museum. There's so much to see and many activities anyone of all ages can enjoy. This is a must visit for your family.
Loved my mine tour experience in June last year. It is quite fascinating to see the vibrant fluorescent colors of minerals under the ultraviolet light. The staff and the owner showed me other spots to see minerals at the end of the tour. The tour is seasonal. I reserved a ticket in advance. You can also see fireflies in the summer night. Highly recommend!!
This place is very cool. Came out with some amazing gems and geodes. Their rock shop is really cool. They have large amethysts at great prices. Definitely recommend visiting here
The self guided tour is very interesting. There is so much to learn about mining days in the past. It is very well kept. There are steps and plenty of benches to rest in between the numbered sites. The fudge is die for!
We were there 2 weeks ago. We are from Orlando Florida and I want to say thank you for mailing us back something very important we left behind. We had an Amazing time. We brought the bucket and were able to mine our own gems. We got a lot beautiful gems from that bucket. Our son can have a million toys to play with but he rather search for rocks and bring it back home.
We have been to different minning places in NC and have been very disappointed. We spent hours digging at your competitors place and never found anything. You have an amazing staff. There's an amazing lady that we can show the gems that we found and she will tell us all the names. Next year when we return to NC we are definitely going to go back. I highly recommend them!
Very interesting museum. We learned a lot of new things. The complex is not at all designed for people with disabilities. Searching for stones is an exciting activity! We will definitely come back.
Love this historical little gem. Packed full of adventure with the self guided tours, it’s easy to take a look back in time. Beautifully preserved pieces from long ago are used to decorate the grounds. Come relax and pan for some gold . Or grab some ice cream or a little token from gift shop to remember your time at the mine …
What an amazing day trip for us! We weren't sure what to expect. I've lived in the state my whole life and have never visited. Lots of bang for the buck. If you enjoy antique museums with great stories behind them, this is your plane. We learned so much during our visit. My 12 year old loved it! After the museums we dropped by the gem mine and worked through a bucket of material. Great bucket with lots of discoveries. The people there are amazing and welcoming. They are also full of knowledge so make sure to ask if you have any questions. Can't wait to go back again!
As a mine enthusiast, this was definitely a fun place to visit. It was very cool to see the old Bon Ami mine and all the mining equipment. The museum was cool but it was very much a maze of how to get around. Panning for gems was a fun experience as well.
It was really neat going in to see all the mining equipment and the stuff they used to pull out of the mines. If you're a history buff and don't have a huge amount of time it's cool to walk around and see everything. The ice cream was great, the fudge I could take or leave but it's alright, and it was nice that they had snacks and stuff.
When walking around inside the cave my husband and I did get really dizzy and disoriented which was strange. Not sure if it was something in the cave or just like motion sickness or something but keep that in mind if you're sensitive to that kind of thing.
Absolutely a “diamond” in the rough. This place really has worked hard to keep up a huge property with very unique sights and activities. Fun can be had by all ages but keep in mind it is up and down hill over rocks and stairs so people with wheel or crutch assistance might not be able to appreciate all this place has. Several great photo ops and the gem mining is fun for everyone.
So much fun! Came here on a whim, but so glad I did. It was beautiful and absolutely amazing to see the formations and history. I would definitely go for the $13 ticket so you can see both parts and the gem mining was really fun, even for adults! The staff was so friendly and there is loads of cool things in the gift shop. The ice cream was delicious and a great way to cool off in the afternoon. Thanks for a great day!
Had a great time here! 100% dog-friendly, even inside. The museum exhibits have been very meticulously created. Give yourself over an hour for the gemstone panning portion so you don't miss good stuff in your mix! The staff were all incredibly nice and would help you identify the gems you pick out. There is an option for on-site jewelers to polish and set your finds.
Pretty cool seeing the old equipment. Imagined the operator parking that big ol digger, cutting it off and taking one last look back at her while walking away. Rusted, weathered to the glory she is seen today. The village gives you a sense of the long ago labor that made people a living. The well maintained equipment then, on display now as lifeless vessels. Stories of the wages earned back then making it hard to comprehend. Great place to explore with very friendly staff. I placed a quarter on the rock wall there. If you see it, let me know ?.
Ok, this is one of the areas great locations to visit and do some gem scavenging. Most of the museum is free access to explore. You can purchase stones and other souvenirs but I recommend taking time and get a bucket to find gems. Just up the road is a self tour gem cave you can enter at a price though. Worth spending a few hours exploring both locations.
Tour Not too expensive they have beautiful gems great views tasty icecream and everyone was vey kind. Can't go in very far in the mines but they were pretty. Museum was pretty interesting as long as u have the time to read all the info.
I live in Nevada, this place was pretty & full of nature. The cove was pretty too, great backdrop for pictures too. I only went to this one spot but I saw there was several in town. I like that this one was not too crowded and lots of seating to sit and sift through your stones and pebbles. There were close by bathrooms ? too which helped. But I think what I liked was the shop above the miming area. It had a nice variety of Jewelry & lovely diff types of stones, geodes, wands, pyramids...And they were very helpful at explaining. Nice Staff. They sold snacks, ice cream, drinks, and coffee ☕️ ?. Score!! So they offered to make fresh pot of coffee & I put my scoop of ice cream in my hot coffee cause they only had powder creamer, Yuk. But all in all was nice, not too big, fun to walk thru & shop around in. Fun times!
Bought tickets for their black light mine tour and it was amazing. The guides were super informative and held huge black lights for as long as we needed to get pictures. They were genuinely interested and excited to teach us about the mine and it’s history. They even provided protective glasses and they have a great selection in their gift shop that’s reasonably priced
Gorgeous vistas and a fun, educational experience. Dog-friendly self-guided tours were an added bonus. Highly recommend this beautiful gem (pun intended) cached away not far from the blue ridge parkway. Also, get the fudge. It’s worth it.
