I had a very frustrating experience with this towing company. My car was towed from my apartment complex because, they claimed, my parking permit sticker wasn’t visible. Before going in, I called to confirm the fee and was told it would be $325, cash only. I withdrew the exact amount from an ATM and arrived right when they opened on January 14th, 2026.
When I got there, I was told they don’t give change, so I had to pay $340 because the ATM only gave $20 bills. If cash is the only accepted payment method, they need to provide change, this is basic in my opinion.
The staff was also extremely rude. The woman at the counter treated me with disdain when I accidentally spoke before she finished talking, and even apologizing didn’t help. The glass partition only made communication more difficult. When I asked follow-up questions to clarify things, I was met with condescension and frustration instead of answers.
Adding insult to injury, the towing itself seems unjustified. The pictures they took of my car before towing clearly show the parking permit sticker, which the driver even photographed. My apartment complex had to intervene to request a refund, which at least I did get. It also doesn't seem as my car had any damage so that's good.
Overall, this was unprofessional, poorly handled, and unnecessarily stressful. I don't wish towing on anyone, but if this company is the one doing it, be prepared.
Not gonna lie i was gonna put a decent review but with what happened just left a bad impression, they did their job and nothing happened to our car but when we went out of the building to go get it with me and my fiance, i accidentally left the door open thinking it would close on its own, the tow truck driver who ever he was, be yelled and cursed at me and started scolding me, it was a simple mistake and he started talking to himself and mumbling some rude words another person interveened and stood up for me, it was just rude that he was so mean the front person was nice, its just the tow truck driver that was being all angry and what not for no reason.
Like most companies they constantly break the law. MN REQUIRES towing companies to accept multiple forms of payment. But they will only accept cash. The fact you get too many charge backs does not exempt you from the law. I have reported to police and consumer protection about this. Also the worker stated she isn't breaking the law about the payments. That's not how it works. You are an employee for the company and represent them so you also are breaking the law. Also way overpriced. Even downtown towing is 225 not 325.
Edit: looks like the statute is sneaky and says "or" in regards to payment so they apparently are off the hook there. But another statute does read they are only allowed to charge a maximum of 150 for the toe and 30 for daily storage.
I have no idea how these prices are legal. 325 plus 50 dollars a night. They close at 4 every day and aren't open on the weekend, so a tow on a friday means you're adding at least another hundred. It's cash only, which is annoying but not as frustrating as the fact they only accept exact change. Even though there is a sign by the counter saying they will give change for up to a $20 bill, which I pointed out, I was told they will not give any change of any amount, not even $5. I said maybe you should take the sign down that says you will give small change. No reply. Gross company.

They took my truck, for X reason, and when I went to release my truck there were rats in my truck.
But apart, 15 dollars were stolen, because they are supposedly not giving change.
In total, I paid 340 to get my truck out. Simply put, I am already in the process of a claim against them.
This place quite literally stole my vehicle from my apartment complex. I was not in visitor parking, had a resident pass, everything was up to date and good. They towed it and said it was taken due to being in visitor parking, I showed them on the map THEY sent to my apartment complex to use and the tow picture that THEY took that my vehicle was obviously NOT in visitor parking. My apartment complex even called and emailed them telling them to release the vehicle free of charge and they still refused. They caused me to miss 2 days of work and spend almost my entire monthly grocery budget in order to get the car out that they shouldn't have taken on the first place. By the time day 2 rolled around I had no choice but to pay the impound fee, I could not go any longer without it. I have a kid and could not miss work. I was the. Forced to sign a paper saying I would not sue them for any damage or wrongful doings in order to release the vehicle. They also tore a piece of my vehicle frame off the car. This company %100 practices predatory towing. I have been speaking to others in my apartment complex and they said the same thing happened to them. They intentionally are targeting a low income mostly non English speaking apartment complex. Knowing most people can't do anything about it. Due to this company's actions I now have to rely on the food shelf this month to feed myself and my child. And I did nothing wrong to deserve this.
They do not disclose that's cash only till you get there nor do they tell you how much it is till you get the process started with them. They also want exact change or something within 15 dollars, and from talking to others there expect a charge for $325 if your car is there for one night. Would leave no stars if I could but at least the customer service there was decent.
Very predatory towing company. They charged me $19.63 in fuel for a 5 mile tow. They added a $50 storage fee for 3hrs of putting my car in a lot with plenty of room. A complaint has been filed with the MN Attorney General. I suggest others do the same!
I tried calling with questions about my vehicle and the lady working dispatch was very disrespectful and rude. Having my vehicle impounded is already a stressor. No matter how stressful your job may be that does not make it ok to be rude to everyone you interact with because you never know what is going on in a persons life on top of this obstacle of trying to come up with $325 to get they're vehicle out of impound.
I felt this company towed my car in a predatory manner while visiting a friend in an apartment complex with what appeared to be deliberately vague and unclear signage. I was towed at 10pm after being parked there 1 hour and initially when I called the after hours number they told me they had no record of my car being towed. Then they charged >$300 the next morning at exactly opening time. I looked into taking them to court but court fees would end up being more costly than it was worth and if you win in small claims court you are in charge of getting them to pay your settlement. I think these people are dishonest and don’t believe they would pay out a court settlement. It frustrates me that this company exists and continues to operate.
Predatory, inconsistent company. Technically within their rights, but they're inconsistency makes them the shadiest towing company I've ever had the displeasure of interacting with. It is also true. They absolutely prey on low income apartment complexes. Horrible hours and fees as well. Only one reason to close down at four, and it's not to be helpful to those wanting a car back
Towed my van and my passenger tire has been wobbling ever since. They don’t care there at all. When called to find out if they had my van they said yes told the price to get it out. As soon as we got there the receptionist acted like she couldn’t be bothered and once starting the process to get the car is when she finally decides to bring up how it is cash only. That would have been nice to know when I called and found out the price of getting the thing out of there.
They towed my car from my spot for no reason and want me to pay for their mistake. Contacted property manager and was told no one had called to patrol/tow any cars been living at residence for 2 1/2 years never had an issue always parked in my assigned spot
they just didn't know what they were doing. now maybe three person was new. totally understandable but between being nearly 2 hours late, told me to wait an hour but didn't say that police can interrupt your wait time. then told me one price but then after waiting it went up and they say the lower price was a mistake but i don't understand how. 125$ and then they arrive and its 161$ ?? give me a break. never again
My car with my personal pass is in the shop getting a motor replaced(3rd time as the engine was not correctly installed) been well over a month. Using a family members vehicle in the meantime to go to work (I’ve lived here for a year now) I even took the extra steps and got a temporary pass for my family’s vehicle from the complex.
Well guess what my personal vehicle was not and is still not finished, my temp parking pass ended so I applied for a new temporary pass from the unit and it got to my door the morning after my car got towed…. My pass had maybe been expired for an 1hr or 2 at most. Absolute predators with low IQs and bad attitudes, they did take pictures but they so bad I could barely tell it was my car in the dark.
So they got my car family’s towed again few days later( the bright red tag hanging on my mirror wasnt clear enough to them ) even showing them it was valid I still had to pay almost 400$!!! Oh and they conveniently are only open for a few hours during the work day.
I pay my rent every month and I’ve had to pay 800$ in fees in 3 days(1.2k) over the year absolute joke. Not to mention I sit on my porch at night and watch theses guys tow cars occasionally. I watched a driver separate a cars quarter panel and clip two curbs on the way out. Don’t know who’s car it was but why treat other people’s stuff with even a little respect when its not yours right?
The first time I was towed I was new to the unit and had not put up my pass yet(I’d been there for 2 days) so that’s on me . I’m not arguing about BEING towed it was about HOW my car was being handled.
My personal cars is an AWD and is nicer than anything theses guys could drive anyways. I asked the driver respectfully to put dollies on the wheels so he didn’t damage my car. He then proceeded to tell me off and drag my car outta the lot.
I irony is I work at auto repair company that over 50 vehicles a day for repairs/breakdown/ lockouts you name it.
I’m not a tow driver by any means but I watch cars get unloaded and loaded everyday.
That being said the negligence and incompetence of your drivers are crazy.
Horrible customer service. Charged way too much for a tow. My car missing the key I have a locksmith unlock it and then had it towed to the dealership it was unlocked when they picked it up and locked when they dropped it off. Wanted to charge me $150 just to unlock it again. The manager Troy was incredibly rude and hung up on me when I told him I didn't think I should have to pay to have the car unlocked, since they were the ones to lock it, with out my permission. Go somewhere else for your towing needs.
Incompetent company that doesn’t validate information before executing. They towed the wrong car, as a consumer that reached out to them. They towed my best friends car who has a valid parking parking pass, instead of my ex who’s been parking without one for 2 month.
Schmit towing has shown me nothing but disrespect. My car had been towed & I observed damage on it - I talked to three different employees (let me mention, I was EXTREMELY respectful) regarding a damage claim & getting some sort of reimbursement. The part of my car that was damaged had no before photo so there is no proof to show that they had damaged it, which is the first mistake they made. As far as I am aware, they are supposed to take before pictures on all angles for this specific reason. The first two employees I talked to were mediocrely respectful to me & told me they would get it processed & reach back out to me in 24-48 hours. I waited more than 48 hours with no contact from them so reached back out, which resulted in an extremely disrespectful employee treating me as if this was my issue and not theirs, specifically telling me “well you can get some of your own paint and touch it up” when THEY were the ones who damaged it, along with pushing in one of my tail lights, which cannot be fixed with “just paint”. I will be getting my insurance involved immediately as they are not handling this issue within legal guidelines. Would not recommend taking any business to them.
They towed my car out of MY driveway for expired tabs , the police don’t even pull you over for it , nor care anymore . My guess is that they dragged my car from the rear , damaged it and didn’t bother to follow procedure and take pictures before hand . I came to that conclusion because when I paid for my car to get released ($320) and asked for them to release the before tow away pictures , I got told that I needed a SUBPOENA/WARRANT ! for pictures of MY car ! That I already paid to get out of their lot ! I called the Brooklyn Park Police Department and they told me that they shouldn’t have asked me for any sort of documents to release the pictures ! And that I should take them to civil court . RIDICULOUS!
The price for getting your car back is ridiculously high and they prey on apartment complexes. It seems that some vehicles are targeted. If you live at Cedarwood particularly, it's easy pickings for them since they tow your car just a couple blocks away! Makes it easy for them to meet their tow quota!
At the end of the day, it's my fault a friend's car was towed from our apartment complex lot. That said, the Schmit's staff was very helpful and efficient with us picking up the car the next day from the Crystal lot location. The woman on the phone the previous night was very helpful with information needed to pick up the car, where, and when.
The next day we were in and out in less than 10 minutes--the guy at the window was efficient with all the ownership and payment items, and the yard guy had us to the car immediately.. There were no issues, problems, or damage to the car, and we drove off straight away. I hope I never see them again, but if I do, they're a good team and do their jobs well!
When my car was towed, after I left my car with my baby sitter I was completely overwhelmed with trying to figure out where my car was. Simply because the person who was responsible for my car was no help. Called two different tow company before I figured out this was the place. After reading the Reviews I was nervous but after dealing with them personally I got nothing short of excellent customer service. From the Gentleman I spoke with last night 3 different times ( Rob) I believe and to the Guy who I spoke with today at the Crystal office He told me his name but I don’t know how to spell it. It starts with a K he has a nice looking beard lol. In reference to the prices of a tow , I’ve never been towed before but the price of it doesn’t really matter seeing as I needed my truck. But I am thankful that they did honor the quote that I was given. This experience was overwhelming for me , but this company was EASY to work with. I hope to never need their services again ( as I hope to never have my car impounded again) but IF I personally needed a tow I would totally call them…

They are very unprofessional, i had my car illegally towed from a lot I was authorized to be in and had a pass to do so.
When I showed them proof I was told I could pay or get out. They are disgusting people with Highway robbery tactics and prices, my car cost me 300 plus fees for less then 8 hours of being in there possession.
These kinds of businesses should be held accountable for there shiesty tactics and practices
If I could give this company zero stars I would. This company towed my vehicle out of my apartment complex parking lot because a parking sticker fell off my rear windshield when I was asleep. Even though I've I've here for 3 years and my car is registered with the apartment complex. When I called they said they would only be open from 130-330pm. I'm now missing work and will have to take a lift to get to the tow lot.
As to the response below from the company. I was not allowed to look for the sticker in my car when I explained the situation and was charged before it could be released and I found the sticker after looking in the trunk. This company is criminal.
Avoid Schmit Towing if you can (especially if you are a person of color). However, if for some reasons you find yourself in one of their many traps, good luck. Besides the exorbitant fees they charge, they will gladly make you feel like some piece of wood in their office.
I just moved into this new apartment and the management assured me I would be properly notified ahead of any scheduled snow removal so I could move my car from the parking lot. Unfortunately for me, the management failed to notify me this time around and my car got towed. I immediately followed the towing guys to their office (in Crystal, MN) hoping for some mercy. However, the guys in the office did not even look at my face let alone feel sorry for me. To them, I was some "game meat". I could tell they took pleasure in my pain but that is a story for another day.
I don't know how exactly they towed the car but I can tell they did a very bad job. After paying more than $300 (and counting), I realized my car could not even start. The ignition was stuck for some reasons and part of the front bumper is coming off. It took some tries and some luck before I could move my car.
Aside from the added unnecessary stress and unappreciated headache of having your car towed from your new apartment complex for not parking in the visitors lot, but didn't know you even had one, then even going to the lot after being told they had my car and wasn't there and Having to go to their other location it wasn't a terrible experience!! Their office staff at both locations shoot even the tow truck drivers we all very courteous and polite and apologetic for the mix up and very friendly!!! Like I said, not a terrible experience for having your car towed!!
