Beautiful, historical and expansive. You can lose a whole day here and not see everything The central tower has a superlative view over the Boston area

A lovely space for walking as well as for exploring different types of gardens. The grounds are extensive. There’s a lights show around the holidays that my friends have enjoyed. There’s a parking area by the front gates, or you can park on designated roads within the cemetery.

absolutely magical after a snow.... a must see in the fall for the foliage too! honestly love this place in all seasons. the view from the washington tower was awesome when i came in the summer/fall but it seemed to be closed today, maybe for the winter? i love i can flip flop between driving and walking by pulling off to the sides of the paths when i want to get out (with the exception of a few paths marked "no parking/walking only") theres also parking at the entrance (all free as of now) if you prefer to walk the entire thing

Used to skip school with my bestie and go to Mr. Auburn... Just buried her on Goldfinch Path near Willow Pond on Friday. Surreal, but apropos. ❤️

A hidden gem. A walk through this place is a serene and special experience. Highly recommended for spending a peaceful day amongst trees, ponds, birds taking a break from the hustle of life

This was my second visit to Mount Auburn Cemetery. My first time was in the fall, when the colorful leaves made the grounds absolutely beautiful. On this visit, my friend and I climbed to the tower at the top, which offers breathtaking 360-degree views of Cambridge and Boston. When we went, the place was quiet with very few people around - likely because it was a weekday - making it a perfect spot to relax. There is seating at the top where you can rest or even enjoy a picnic while taking in the greenery and scenery. It is a peaceful, scenic place that I highly recommend visiting.

This "garden cemetery" is stunning. It functions as a botanical garden, arboretum, and bird sanctuary. There are beautiful paths for walking and a tower that you can climb to enjoy gorgeous views of Boston.

Mount Auburn Cemetery is a hidden gem for a stroll! The serene paths wind through stunning landscapes and historic graves, some dating back to the 1800s. We enjoyed a beautiful sunset as we walked, creating a peaceful and reflective atmosphere. The blend of nature and history makes it a must-visit spot. Highly recommend for anyone looking for a quiet place to walk in the city! ??

This is a great place to come walk around and enjoy the scenery. I've been coming here for over 45 years and have always remarked on how peaceful Mount Auburn Cemetery can be. With all the different water features, trees and vegetation there is so much to see and observe and not to mention all the wildlife that call this place home. And the groundskeepers keep this place looking great!

This is probably one of the best kept (not so secret) secrets of greater Boston area! This place is absolutely amazing. While it’s technically a cemetery, it really feels more like a park. There are ponds, gardens and beautiful architecture throughout the 175 Acres of land here. It also boasts a collection of rare trees from all over the world (around 5000 trees in total) and is a huge draw for birders as it has an impressive variety/ diversity of them (due to the extensive ecosystem from all the rare trees I am guessing). I have literally seen countless rare birds here while not even trying to look. You can walk around for hours and not run out of new, beautiful things to see. There is also a tower that one is able to scale to see a pretty sweet 360 panorama of Boston and its surroundings. Now it is still a cemetery, but one where a lot of the graves and crypts are so beautiful you may forget people are buried here. Speaking of buried people, it turns out that Isabella Stewart Gardner (of the Gardner Museum is buried here - among many other famous folks). I can’t stress this enough: if you like beauty, alone time and tranquility, you have to check this place out! Now it is tech

Beautiful cemetery open to the public with beautiful views from atop Washington Tower. Definitely worth the 10-15 minute hike up to the tower.

Mount Auburn Cemetery is a lovely place to visit. There are some stunning memorials, including a sphinx. But it is also a great place to just walk around and enjoy some nature in the city, away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

When running against time needs a pause and a moment to recall all the things you have achieved, sacrificed and missed while doing that, this is the place you come to. The place where the love of your life was buried or even if nobody is here you feel what I am trying to accomplish if I am not with my family anymore. This blurb is just what I felt, when I came here to Mount Auburn Cemetery, right in the heart of Cambridge. A hike, walk and picturesque location to remember forever.

Beautiful cemetery with a small chapel. The monuments are cool, peaceful place to wander around on a sunny afternoon. I could have spent a lot more time here. Need to go back.

The most beautiful cemetery I will ever see. The atmosphere is so somber and yet peaceful. We walked an hour and barely covered 40% of the place. The graves are stunning to look at. There’s also so many different kind of flora and birds like eagles and turkeys you don’t see in public places. There’s a tower from where you can see the Boston skyline which closes at 6 pm sadly we missed it. The place closes at 8 pm. There’s no picnicing or pets allowed. It’s a must see in Boston even if cemeteries are not your thing!

You don't expect yourself to be raving about a cemetery to your family and friends, but after a leisurely stroll through the Mount Auburn Cemetery and Arboretum you'll be doing just that. Stop by the chapel at the gates for a map of resting places of famous/historical people and a sense at the scope of the place. You could spend most of your day here if you wanted.

Beautiful water features and amenities like paths and benches make this a top-tier cemetery. Lots of diverse fauna and foliage (with name-tags for lovers of science and tree-names) and bird-watchers with binocs and telephoto lenses. What a peaceful and lovely local green space!

Beautiful place to walk, I have come here twice and have really enjoyed myself both times. The grounds are extremely well kept and there is a large variety of wildlife throughout the cemetery and it's just really peaceful. Feels like you escape the city for a little bit and it is really quite wonderful.

One of the most beautiful places I've been in America. Walking paths curve up and down, in and out of beautiful rolling hills in between wonderfully sentimental gravestones, many with distinctive personalities and messages that moved me. Visit a couple of hours before sunset - the light weaves through the trees, hills and architecture to frame and highlight a different part of the cemetery at each moment. Many members of the who's who of Boston in the last two-hundred years are buried here - look up a visible name and chances are fairly high that you'll be able to find a Wikipedia page for the gravestone's dedicatee. So much history is honored here, and the plot is planned so beautifully to honor it. Don't miss the Mary Baker Eddie monument at sunset or the tombs on the lakefront at the right of the cemetary. Meander - this place is made for wandering, for pacing and pausing and thinking about life, death, and what matters in between.

Tranquil escape. It feels more like a park than a traditional cemetery. It’s always quiet when I go and the grounds are perfect for a long relaxing stroll. The weeping birches are my favorite, it makes me feel like a child in a fort when you walk inside their canopies. Excellent place to take photos and great place to bird watch. The tower is a cool place to bring visitors to Boston- the views of the city are incredible. It’s a great place to bring a book and spend an afternoon. It feels like a secret garden.

Mount Auburn is the very first garden cemetery in the country. It started a trend of the larger Victorian cemeteries we are so familiar with in the U.S. It spans many acres and is home for over 100,000 bodies. The monuments are of great variety and show many different kinds of art. There is even a large sphinx monument, and egyptian style entry gates. On an Autumn day, its the perfect place to explore. There are so many kinds of beautiful trees there, includingmy new favorite, the Weeping Beech. It's a beautiful place to spend a day.

Peaceful place and free to walk around. The Japanese thread leaf maple trees are a popular attraction here. The Washington tower provides spectacular views of Boston and on some clear days one could see much farther than the city. Well maintained place that sees a lot of walking traffic. The eerie silence of the cemetery provides an unexplainable sense of calm. Quite possible because of the green cover. Anyhow, I’d definitely recommend a walk here to calm your senses and soak in the views.

Beautifully kept grounds in this historical cemetery. Great place for a quiet walk. Even the kids enjoyed seeing all the different kinds of trees and headstones. Great views of the city at the tower, which unfortunately was closed when we went.

Wonderfully beautiful and peaceful! This cemetery is something anyone in Cambridge or the surrounding areas should visit. It is free to walk around, and everywhere you go there is something to look at, whether it be gravetones, fencing, monuments, or buildings. The landscaping and variety of plants is extraordinary. I would love to visit again in another season just to see how it looks! Just to walk here again would be great!

One of the most spectacular, beautiful, and historic cemeteries you will find anywhere in the world. As a genealogist and family historian who has visited hundreds of cemeteries across three continents, this one is truly special. Be sure to have a paper map with you, not just your phone GPS. You can get one near the bathroom and little visitor center, just be sure to leave a little donation. There are many historic grave markers and it will take many hours to cover just a small portion of this expansive park like cemetery.
